A guide to World of Tanks Blitz on PC/Mac (Steam), mobile, and Nintendo Switch (all cross-play on the same servers): how 7v7 battles work, armor and penetration, tank classes, currencies and what to spend on, choosing a tech-tree line, and the current events.

Researched September 2026 — current as of the September 2026 "Japanese Heavy Tanks" update and the Ironfest event (September 25 – October 5, 2026). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Note on versions: World of Tanks Blitz is published by Wargaming worldwide. In Russia and Belarus, the game is run separately by Lesta Games as "Tanks Blitz"; accounts and events differ between the two. This guide covers Wargaming's version (the Steam app 444200).

Quick Start

  • Battles are 7v7, about 7 minutes. Win by destroying all enemies or capturing the base (Supremacy mode uses capture points instead).
  • Matchmaking is by tier (I–X). You usually face tanks within one tier of yours.
  • Aim for weak spots. Penetration beats damage: shoot lower plates, cupolas, and flat side armor, not angled turret fronts.
  • Angle your armor. Turning your hull about 20–30 degrees makes shells travel through more steel.
  • Don't rush alone. 7v7 means one early death is a big loss.
  • Pick one line and stick to it. Spreading Free XP and credits across many lines slows you down.
  • Always equip consumables and provisions. Repair kits, first aid kits, and boosts win fights.
  • Play Tier V–VII for a while to learn before jumping to Tier VIII+.
  • Check events weekly. Events give free premium tanks and camouflage.

Tank Classes

Class | Role | Tips

Light tanks | Scout, flank, finish damaged targets | Keep moving; spot enemies for your team

Medium tanks | Flexible, fast, good guns | Support the heavies; rotate between flanks

Heavy tanks | Frontline armor, HP pool | Lead pushes; use angles and hull-down positions

Tank destroyers | High damage, weak armor or limited traverse | Stay back, pick shots, relocate after firing

Armor and Shooting

  • Penetration vs armor: shells must exceed the effective armor thickness. Angling increases effective thickness.
  • Autoricochet: shells can bounce at steep angles.
  • Overmatch: large-caliber shells can overmatch thin plates regardless of angle.
  • Shell types: AP/APCR (standard, high velocity), HEAT (high pen, weak against spaced armor), HE (splash damage, low pen). Premium shells cost more credits.
  • Hull-down: hide your hull behind a hill and show only your turret.
  • Module damage: damaged modules (gun, tracks, engine, observation devices) hurt performance until repaired; a repair kit fixes them instantly, so don't save it while you're tracked in the open.

Spotting and Concealment

  • You can only shoot what someone has spotted. Each tank has a view range; enemies inside it become visible to your whole team unless their concealment hides them.
  • Bushes and trees hide you. Standing still behind foliage makes you much harder to spot; moving, and especially firing, gives you away.
  • Big tanks are easy to see. Heavies and the new Japanese superheavies should rely on hard cover (buildings, rocks, ridges), not bushes.
  • Hard cover beats armor. Breaking line of sight while you reload is the single easiest way to take less damage.
  • Lights and mediums win by information. Spotting a flank and staying alive is worth more than one risky shot.

Game Modes

Mode | Description

Regular battles (Supremacy / Encounter) | Standard 7v7

Rating / Ranked battles | Competitive mode with ranks and rewards; event progress (e.g. Canisters in Way of the Raider) often counts here too

Equalizer | Added in the September 2026 update; like Total Domination, tanks of all tiers fight together, with lower tiers getting boosts. Limited-time; check the Events tab for when it runs

Event modes | Rotating special modes (e.g. Mad Games and others)

Training rooms | Private rooms for practice, scrims, and testing tanks with friends

Currencies and Progression

Currency | Use

Credits | Buying tanks, modules, shells, consumables

Gold | Premium currency; premium tanks, premium account, converting XP

Free XP | Research any tank or module

Combat XP | Researching the tank you earned it in

Certificates / event tokens | Varies by event

What to spend on

  • Premium account: faster credits and XP. Worth it if you play regularly.
  • Premium tanks: earn more credits; Tier VII–VIII premiums are great credit makers.
  • Tank Branch License: renamed from "Set License" in the September 2, 2026 update, which lets it unlock any researchable branch from Tier I to Tier X. Every vehicle on the chosen path is instantly unlocked and fully researched without spending Credits or XP. It has no expiration date, so save it for the line you want.
  • Operations (seasonal pass): e.g. "Savanna Soul" (August 2026) had two 60-level tracks, free for everyone plus a Premium Pass track. Pass level rises automatically, but you must claim rewards manually. Buy the Premium Pass only if you'll play enough to finish it.
  • Don't spend gold converting XP until you know which tanks you want.

Crew, Equipment, and Consumables

  • Crew skills: train skills that boost reload, aiming, and survivability.
  • Equipment: slots for firepower, survivability, and mobility. Choose based on your role.
  • Consumables: repair kit, first aid kit, fire extinguisher, and adrenaline.
  • Provisions: boost crew, speed, and firepower for the battle.

Current Events (September 2026)

Event | Dates | Rewards

Ironfest | September 25 – October 5 | 1 Iron Pretzel per battle with 1,800+ damage; final stage lets you claim the Rhino Legendary camouflage (M48A2 Räumpanzer), the Ironfest profile background, or both

Origin: 1916 | From September 11 | 4 Lanterns per win in Tier IV–X; six stages lead to the Mark I Male; Emergency Containers in the event shop

Backroom Stock: Defenders vs Titans | From September 4 | Open Cargo Stashes with Crowbars (bought in the Store); Copper Coils and Key Cards inside lead to the LEY-1 Defender (Tier VIII light tank)

A-Typical | September 4–14 (ended) | Coins for 1,000+ damage battles by class; Kunze Panzer

Japanese heavy tanks | Since September 2 | New superheavy branch with the Type 5 Heavy Zetsu at Tier X

Events rotate quickly; check the in-game Events tab. Paid "stash/container" events (like Backroom Stock) are gambling-style: decide your budget before you start, and remember the free event paths (Ironfest, Origin: 1916) reward just playing.

Choosing a Line

  • Beginner-friendly heavies: lines with strong armor and forgiving guns.
  • Mediums: versatile and fun, but require map knowledge.
  • TDs: great damage but vulnerable if spotted.
  • Japanese superheavies (new): excellent armor (especially the turret front), large HP pools, and hard-hitting guns, but low mobility and a big silhouette. Pick your flank at the start, because rotating later takes too long, and avoid open ground.

A Battle, Minute by Minute

Phase | Heavies | Mediums / Lights | Tank destroyers

First 30 seconds | Drive to your brawling lane (usually the one with hard cover or city blocks) | Take early spotting/firing positions; don't cross open ground blind | Pick a bush with a long sightline to where enemies will appear

Early fight | Trade shots using angles and hull-down; don't overextend | Shoot at tanks that are already engaged with your heavies | Take free shots, then back off to reset camouflage

Midgame | Push only when you have HP advantage | Flank the weakest lane or reinforce the losing one | Relocate to cover the lane your team is losing

Endgame | Use your HP pool to absorb shots while teammates deal damage | Use speed to cap or reset base captures, and hunt weakened enemies | Stay alive; your damage-per-shot closes out games

Rule of thumb: after the first exchange, look at the team panel. Whichever side has more total HP left should push; the other should hold good positions and wait for mistakes.

Early Account Plan

  • Tier I–IV: play a few battles in each class to see what you enjoy. These tiers are quick to grind.
  • Tier V–VI: commit to one or two lines. Research the top gun and engine for each tank before moving on — stock tanks are painful.
  • Tier VII–VIII: credits start mattering. Use a premium tank (from an event or the shop) to earn credits for your main line.
  • Tier IX–X: repair and shell costs are high. Play carefully and keep premium shells for armored targets.
  • Free XP: spend it on painful stock modules rather than skipping whole tanks.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Shooting at the strongest armor.
  • Going hull-front straight at enemies.
  • Driving into the open alone.
  • Wasting gold on XP conversion early.
  • Using premium shells every shot. They cost credits; use them when needed.
  • Ignoring the minimap. It shows where your team is thin and where enemies were last spotted.
  • Buying containers or stashes without a budget. Randomized rewards add up fast; free event paths give plenty of loot.
  • Skipping stock-module research. A stock Tier VIII or IX tank is badly underpowered; research the gun first.
  • Forgetting to collect rewards. Operation pass rewards must be claimed manually, and loyalty gifts (the 2026 anniversary container, claimable August 21 – September 20) expire.

Advanced Tips

  • Tier matching: when bottom-tier, support teammates rather than leading pushes.
  • Reload timing: track enemy reloads and peek when they fire.
  • Spotting: Blitz has no artillery, so spotting mainly helps your TDs and snipers. Light tanks should sit in bushes near ridgelines and relay what they see rather than charge.
  • Map control: know strong positions on each map.
  • Compare guns properly: look past alpha damage. Penetration, reload, aim time, and shell velocity decide whether a gun suits your playstyle.
  • Firing reveals you: shooting from a bush sharply reduces your concealment for a moment. TDs should fire, then reverse out of sight before returning fire becomes accurate.
  • Platoon up: a two-player platoon with voice or quick chat wins far more often than two solo players. Clans are the easiest way to find regular platoon partners.
