A spoiler-light survival guide for Outlast 2: how the camcorder, batteries and bandages really work, how to handle chases and hiding, a chapter-by-chapter outline of where the story takes you, difficulty choices, and achievement hunting.

Researched September 2026 — current as of the final PC patch (Story Mode update, March 2018). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Quick Start

  • You cannot fight. Blake Langermann only survives by running, hiding and sneaking. Every encounter is a puzzle about sightlines and routes.
  • The camcorder is your lifeline. Night vision lets you see in the dark, but it drains batteries. Turn it off whenever you have any light.
  • Batteries and bandages are finite. Pick up every one you see, but do not panic-hoard: using a bandage when bleeding matters more than saving it.
  • Crouch and walk in populated areas. Sprinting is loud and draws attention; crouching behind tall grass and walls keeps you hidden.
  • Look for the route first, then commit. Chases are usually scripted: there is one path forward, often marked by light, open doors or objects you can squeeze under.
  • Hide in barrels, lockers, under beds and in water when enemies are searching — but not while they are watching you.
  • Use the microphone to hear footsteps through walls. The camcorder's audio meter shows where noise comes from.
  • Record the flagged moments. Some scenes let you film a "recording" with commentary. These count toward achievements.
  • Pick Story Mode or Easy for a first run if the chases frustrate you. Story Mode reduces enemies and their speed, damage and perception.
  • Expect disturbing content. Outlast 2 deals with extreme violence and religious horror, including themes of abuse.

Setting and Story Premise

You play Blake Langermann, a cameraman, investigating the murder of a pregnant woman known as Jane Doe with his wife Lynn, a journalist. Your helicopter crashes in the Arizona desert near Temple Gate, a town run by the preacher Sullivan Knoth and his followers, who are convinced the end times are coming. Blake is separated from Lynn and has to find her while surviving Knoth's flock, a rival cult called the Heretics led by Val, and the diseased Scalled led by Laird. Throughout, Blake falls into hallucinations of his old Catholic school and a childhood friend, Jessica Gray.

The game is set in the same universe as Outlast (the Murkoff Corporation is in the background) but you do not need to have played the first game.

Core Mechanics

The camcorder

Function | What it does | Tips

Recording view | Raises the camera; needed for recordings | Walking with the camera up is fine, but it slows your reactions

Night vision | See in total darkness | The only thing that drains batteries; switch it off in lit areas

Zoom | Scout enemies and routes from a distance | Useful in the open fields and the town

Microphone | Detects distant footsteps and voices | Per the May 2017 patch, it no longer uses extra batteries

Health and bandages

  • Taking damage makes Blake bleed and blurs the screen. Serious injuries need a bandage, so don't count on recovering while you're bleeding.
  • Use bandages from the inventory when you are safe. Using one mid-chase is slow and often gets you caught.

Stamina and movement

  • A stamina meter limits sprinting. Push past it and Blake becomes exhausted and slows down, which is usually when chasers catch you. Sprint in bursts, break line of sight, then hide.
  • Besides walking and crouching, Blake can run, jump, vault, slide and climb. Sliding under gaps and vaulting low obstacles are the moves chases are built around. When you see a low opening, it's probably the route.

Hiding and stealth

  • Tall grass, corn fields and dark corners hide you if you crouch and stay still.
  • Barrels, lockers, wardrobes and beds break line of sight. Enemies sometimes check them if they saw you enter. Note that the Prophet achievement forbids hiding in barrels and closets, so a Prophet run means relying on grass, cornfields, water and houses instead.
  • Water — ducking under water can break pursuit in some areas.
  • Doors — closing a door behind you slows chasers. Look for doors you can barricade or slam.

Documents and recordings

  • Documents (letters, notes, scripture) are scattered across the world; they fill in the lore and count toward Bible Study and Ordination.
  • Recordings trigger when you film specific moments; Blake adds commentary. Road to Damascus and The Apostle Paul require them.

Difficulty Settings

Difficulty | What to expect

Story Mode | Added March 2018. Fewer enemies, lower speed, damage and perception, more room to explore. You can still die

Easy | More forgiving resources and enemies

Normal | The intended experience; rebalanced by the May 2017 patch

Hard | Fewer supplies, tougher enemies (Sanctified achievement)

Nightmare | Harsher still (Preacher achievement)

Insane | The hardest mode (Saint and Messiah achievements); read its menu description before committing

The same March 2018 patch also put back a few elements Red Barrels had cut to get an M rating (rather than an Adults Only rating). The developers said these changes don't affect gameplay.

Which difficulty for a first run? Normal if you want the intended tension. It was rebalanced on 5 May 2017 after launch feedback, so it's fairer than early reviews suggest. Pick Story Mode if chases make you quit rather than retry: you'll see the whole story, and the fewer enemies make document and recording hunting far less stressful.

Area-by-Area Outline (Light Spoilers)

This is a rough navigation outline in story order, not a full walkthrough.

  • Crash site and the desert — learn the camera, night vision and hiding. You find the pilot dead and meet Knoth's followers.
  • Temple Gate — the cult's town. Stealth through tight streets, houses and fields while searching for Lynn. Marta, Knoth's giant pickaxe-wielding enforcer, hunts you in this stretch: stay low in the grass and move when she turns away.
  • The school hallucinations — Blake is repeatedly pulled into visions of his Catholic school, St. Sybil, where a demonic figure pursues him. These sections are about fleeing and finding the correct route rather than resources, and they carry the Jessica Gray side of the story. Read the documents here if you care about the plot, because they explain what really happened to her.
  • The Heretics — after Lynn is taken by Val's group, you cross their territory. Open ground with patrols; use water and darkness. A local named Ethan helps you and fills in the Jane Doe backstory.
  • The Scalled — the diseased outcasts and their leader Laird, who mistake Blake for someone important. Expect long chase sequences and cramped structures.
  • The mines — the final stretch underground, where the cult and the Heretics collide, leading to the ending.

The Murkoff Corporation's role is only hinted at in-game. Documents and the environment suggest an outside cause behind the town's madness and the "blinding light", so if you want the full picture, pick up everything.

General navigation hints:

  • If you are stuck, look for light sources, open windows, climbable ledges and crawl spaces; the game signals the way with lighting.
  • In chases, do not look back. Keep sprinting toward the next doorway.
  • Doors that slam shut behind you usually mean the chase is over.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Leaving night vision on in lit areas. It is the main battery drain.
  • Sprinting everywhere in stealth zones. Noise attracts enemies; crouch-walk instead.
  • Hiding while being watched. If an enemy sees you enter a barrel or locker, they may pull you out.
  • Hoarding bandages until you die. Heal when bleeding and safe.
  • Stopping mid-chase to find the route. Scan ahead before triggering a chase if you can; once running, commit.
  • Ignoring the microphone in dark areas.
  • Playing Insane blind for achievements. Learn routes on Normal or Hard first.

Advanced Tips

  • Route knowledge beats everything. On higher difficulties, plan which barrels and grass patches you will use between checkpoints.
  • Enemies lose you when line of sight breaks for long enough. Turning corners and ducking into grass is often enough.
  • Batteries: reload only when you must. The Messiah achievement (Insane, without reloading the camera battery) shows how far careful night-vision discipline can stretch a single battery once you know the routes.
  • Speedruns: Asahel needs a finish under 4 hours; skip documents and most recordings, and know the chase routes.
  • Launch options from the May 2017 patch: -refreshrate 60 sets a preferred refresh rate (replace 60 with yours) and -notexturelimit removes the texture streaming limit.

Achievements

Outlast 2 has 24 Steam achievements. The ones with public requirements, with the share of Steam players who have them:

Achievement | Requirement | Global %

Born Again | Finish the game | 23.0%

The Road to Damascus | Complete 30 recordings | 18.5%

Sanctified | Finish in Hard Mode | 6.9%

Bible Study | Collect 40 documents | 4.7%

Preacher | Finish in Nightmare Mode | 3.4%

Asahel | Finish the game in under 4 hours | 2.8%

Prophet | Finish the game without hiding in a barrel or closet | 2.7%

Ordination | Collect all documents | 2.5%

The Apostle Paul | Complete all recordings | 2.5%

Saint | Finish in Insane Mode | 2.1%

Messiah | Finish in Insane Mode without reloading the camera battery | 2.1%

The other 13 are hidden story or discovery achievements: What God Has Joined, Babylon, Hang in there Baby, Be Thou Clean, Golgotha, Sancti Sepulchri, Heal the Sick, Let No Man Put Asunder, Revelations, Them That Hath Ears, Slip and Slide, Proper Penance and Thoroughly Baptized. Most of them pop during a normal playthrough. The last three are rarer (around 3% each), so they're tied to specific situations that a straight run can miss. Look them up if you're going for 100%, because their names alone don't give much away.

Saint and Messiah have the same unlock rate (2.1%). That suggests nearly everyone who beats Insane does it without reloading the battery anyway, so plan one Insane run for both.

Suggested order:

  • Run 1 (Normal or Story): learn the game and collect documents and recordings. Ordination and The Apostle Paul need every one, so a guide for missable documents and recordings helps here.
  • Run 2 (Hard): Sanctified. You'll know the chases now.
  • Run 3 (Nightmare): Preacher. Try adding Asahel (under 4 hours) by skipping documents and recordings.
  • Run 4 (Insane): Saint and Messiah together. Combine Prophet and Asahel too if you're confident, or do Prophet on an easier difficulty.

Don't assume a higher-difficulty finish also unlocks the lower-difficulty achievements. Check your unlocks after each run.

FAQ

Is Outlast 2 scarier than Outlast 1? It is more open, with more chases through outdoor areas and a heavier focus on religious and psychological horror.

Do I need to play Outlast 1 first? No. It is the same universe but a new story and cast.

What does Story Mode change? Fewer enemies, lower enemy speed, damage and perception, and more exploration pacing. You can still die.

How do I get more batteries? Explore side rooms and drawers. On lower difficulties they are plentiful; on higher ones, turn off night vision whenever possible.

Can you fight enemies? No, only in scripted moments.

Where can I hide? In lockers, barrels, wardrobes, beds, water pools, tall grass, cornfields and houses. Enemies may search a spot if they saw you get into it.

How long is Outlast 2? Long enough that the speedrun achievement asks for under 4 hours; a careful first run takes noticeably longer.

Is there a sequel? Red Barrels followed with The Outlast Trials, a co-op prequel to both games set during Murkoff's Cold War-era experiments. It entered early access on 18 May 2023 and fully released on 5 March 2024. Outlast 3 was announced in December 2017 but has no confirmed date.

Is Outlast 2 on Switch? Yes. It came to Nintendo Switch on 27 March 2018, the same day the Story Mode patch arrived on PC.

What was changed in the patches? The 5 May 2017 patch rebalanced difficulty (mainly on Normal), stopped the microphone from using extra batteries, enlarged subtitles, fixed lost-save and lighting bugs, and added the -refreshrate and -notexturelimit launch options. The 27 March 2018 patch added Story Mode. Simplified Chinese came on 10 May 2017.
