A starting guide to SoulWorker on Steam in 2026: whether the game is still running, how to choose a character, what to focus on while levelling, how the maintenance-reward and event cycle works, and how to avoid the common beginner traps of an anime action MMO.

Researched September 2026 — current as of the 17 September 2026 regular maintenance. Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Service status (verified September 2026): The Steam version of SoulWorker (publisher G・O・P, developer credit VALOFE on Steam; originally made by Lion Games Studios) is online and actively maintained. Recent Steam announcements show regular maintenance with game updates on 23 July, 20 August and 17 September 2026, plus short temporary fix-up maintenances (16 and 24 July, 24 August, and 15 and 17 September). A brief history: the original Gameforge-run English service closed on 30 April 2021, and a new English server launched through Steam on 13 May 2021. Steam's recent-review score is low (Mostly Negative over the last 30 days in September 2026, from a small sample), while overall reviews are Mixed — read recent reviews before investing money.

Quick Start

  • It is free to play with in-game purchases (Soul Cash) and an optional SoulWorker PLUS membership that gets extra maintenance rewards.
  • Kernel-level anti-cheat. The Steam page lists nProtect GameGuard; you must accept its third-party EULA.
  • Pick the character you enjoy watching. Every SoulWorker has a unique weapon and combo style; there is no class change, so your character choice is your class.
  • Follow the main story quests. They are the fastest levelling path and unlock new areas and systems.
  • Log in after every maintenance. Regular maintenances hand out rewards such as Gruton Coins, Super High-Dose Vitamin Z, Energy Converters and Distorted Remnants of Desire, claimable for about two weeks.
  • Do the events. Login events, birthday events and collaborations give costumes, materials and level-jump tickets at times.
  • Do not spend premium currency blind. Learn which systems matter for your character before buying.
  • Party up for harder dungeons. SoulWorker is an MORPG: hub towns with instanced dungeons, many of them co-op friendly.
  • Learn your dodge and combo cancels early. Combat is action-based; positioning and dodging matter more than gear early.
  • Log out safely before maintenance — the notices ask players to log out in a safe location.

The Characters

The original six SoulWorkers, with their weapons:

Character | Weapon | Feel

Haru Estia | Soulum sword | Fast melee sword combos

Erwin Arclight | Twin pistols | Mobile gunner, ranged and close-range shooting

Lily Bloommerchen | Mist Scythe | Wide, sweeping melee attacks

Stella Unibell | Howling Guitar | Unusual caster-style fighter using sound

Jin Seipatsu | Spirit Arms (martial arts) | Close-quarters brawler

Iris Yuma | Hammer | Heavy hits and big area attacks

Four later additions complete the current ten-character roster listed in the Steam update notes: Chii, Ephnel, Nabi and Dhana. Characters have received 2nd Awakening upgrades over time (Haru and Chii's in July 2025, and Jin's questline by September 2025), which add new skills and questlines — check the in-game notices for which characters have theirs.

How to choose:

  • New to action games? A ranged or mid-range character like Erwin gives you more room for error.
  • Like big, satisfying hits? Iris or Lily.
  • Want fast combos? Haru or Jin.
  • Want something unusual? Stella.

Try several — creating characters is free, and the early game is quick.

Core Systems

Combat

  • Action combat with a skill bar, basic attack combos and dodges.
  • Skills unlock as you level; spend skill points in the skill window.
  • Combos: chaining skills into each other and cancelling animations with dodges is the core of high damage.

Levelling and story

  • Quests and dungeons give most of your XP.
  • Main story quests unlock new zones and progression systems.
  • Level-jump tickets are sometimes given in events; use them on a character you plan to keep.

Gear and upgrades

  • Equipment drops from dungeons and is crafted/upgraded with materials.
  • Upgrade the gear you will keep for a while; early gear is replaced quickly.
  • Save rare materials for endgame-relevant items.

Akashic Records

  • A collection system of cards (Akashic Records) that give stat bonuses. New ones arrive with events and collaborations (the 2025 Last Origin collaboration added fresh Akashic Records).
  • Collect widely: many bonuses stack across your account progression.

Companions and cosmetics

  • Costumes and companions arrive through events, collaborations and the cash shop.
  • Most are cosmetic or minor bonuses; do not feel pressured to buy them.

SoulWorker PLUS

  • A membership that grants extra rewards, including maintenance-reward bonuses that are "provided ONLY to accounts with activated SoulWorker PLUS".
  • Useful for regular players; unnecessary for trying the game out.

Level Cap and Key Level Milestones

The level cap on the Steam server is 85. It rose from 79 to 81 in July 2023, to 82 in August 2023 (Episode 2, Act 3), and to 85 on 1 August 2024 alongside Episode 2.5. No further cap increase appears in Steam announcements through September 2026.

Level | What it means

76 | Where event Level Jump tickets put a character, with the 1st Awakening unlocked (per the July 2025 Level Jump event)

81+ | Recommended level for the Episode 2 (Act 3) maze Tainted Aspiration

85 | Level cap. Since August 2025 it is also the requirement for 1:1 Trading, Mail (H.E.M.S) and the Market on that character

Why the level-85 trading rule matters: a fresh character cannot trade, mail or use the Market. If you plan to buy or sell, get one character to 85 first — and do not buy items from other players for a low-level alt expecting to receive them by mail.

Mazes, Raids and Story Content

SoulWorker calls its instanced dungeons mazes. Names confirmed in the Steam update notes:

Content | Type | When added (Steam server)

Advancing Helix | Single-player-only training maze in virtual reality | March 2023

Muted Haven, Chamber Astray | Mazes | July 2023 (cap raised to 81)

Tainted Aspiration | Episode 2 (Act 3) maze, recommended Lv. 81+ | August 2023 (cap raised to 82)

Collateral Damage | Raid | December 2023

Recapture Etheldreda | Episode 2.5 maze, alongside 16 new main story quests | August 2024 (cap raised to 85)

Broken Savior Hero, Ruthless Gold | Raid access passes handed out in a January 2026 login event | Current endgame

Open-field hunting areas such as the Endless Wasteland also exist between mazes; event items sometimes drop from normal monsters there.

Endgame loop in practice: reach 85, finish the main story through Episode 2.5, then run raids for weapon, accessory and costume drops (some content also has a Hero Mode). Raid access passes from events and maintenance rewards are worth saving for when your gear is ready.

Beginner Progression Plan

Stage | Focus

First sessions | Tutorial and main story; learn your character's combos

Early levels | Keep following the main quests; do dungeons at your level

Mid levels | Upgrade gear you will keep; start collecting Akashic Records

Near endgame (70s–80s) | 1st Awakening, Episode 2 mazes such as Tainted Aspiration, party content, better gear sets, event materials

Level 85 | Unlocks trading, mail and Market on that character; finish Episode 2.5 (Recapture Etheldreda)

Endgame | Raids and hard mazes with a party; 2nd Awakening questline where available; optimize Akashic Records and gear

Budget tip: maintenance rewards (Gruton Coins, Super High-Dose Vitamin Z, Energy Converters, Distorted Remnants of Desire) arrive with every regular maintenance and expire after about two weeks. Claim them on the character that needs them most rather than letting them lapse on an alt.

Maintenance and Events Cycle

  • Regular maintenance roughly monthly (recent: 15/23 July, 20 August, 17 September 2026), usually with update notes and event notes.
  • Temporary maintenance for fixes, often short (25 minutes to a couple of hours).
  • Maintenance rewards are claimable for a set period (the 17 September 2026 rewards were available until 30 September GMT).
  • Events include login events, seasonal events, character birthday events (for example Iris, Ephnel, Haru, Jin and Dhana in 2025), server anniversaries and collaborations such as SoulWorker x Last Origin (August–October 2025).

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Skipping the main story. It is the fastest progression path.
  • Upgrading throwaway gear with rare materials.
  • Spending premium currency immediately before you know the systems.
  • Ignoring dodges. Action combat punishes button mashing.
  • Missing maintenance rewards — they expire.
  • Playing through major updates without reading notes. Systems change with updates.

Advanced Tips

  • Combo cancels: learn which skills cancel into others to maximize damage.
  • Build around your 2nd Awakening once available; it changes skill priorities.
  • Collect Akashic Records across events.
  • Use event level-jump tickets on the character you want to main, not an experiment.
  • Party composition: mixing ranged and melee characters makes hard dungeons smoother.
  • Account safety: do not share accounts; GameGuard and transaction restrictions exist to fight cheating and RMT.
