The systems that decide SOULCALIBUR VI matches (8-Way Run, Reversal Edge, Soul Charge, Guard Impact, Lethal Hits), how to pick and learn a character, what the single-player modes offer, and how to improve online.

Researched September 2026 — current as of the final major update, Ver. 2.30 (December 2020), which added Hwang. No further balance patches have been released since. Check the linked sources if something differs.

Quick Start

  • Movement is the game. 8-Way Run lets you step and walk around linear attacks. Learning which of your opponent's moves are vertical (hard to step) and which are horizontal (they track sideways) is the foundation of SoulCalibur.
  • Vertical beats step, horizontal beats step-and-run. A (horizontal) catches sidestepping opponents; B (vertical) is usually faster and more damaging but can be stepped.
  • Block with G. Blocking is a button, not a direction. Hold G to guard high and mid, crouch-guard to block lows.
  • Reversal Edge (B+G) is a panic button with a price. It absorbs hits and starts a rock-paper-scissors clash. Strong against mashers, punishable if your opponent reads it.
  • Spend meter wisely. Critical Edge (A+B+K) is a cinematic super; Soul Charge powers up your character's moveset for a short time.
  • Watch the ring edges. Ring Outs are instant round wins on many stages.
  • Learn 10 moves, not 60. Pick a fast poke, a low, a mid launcher, a whiff punisher, and your best block punishes.
  • Use Training mode's frame data display to find out which moves are safe on block.

Buttons and Core Mechanics

Input | Name | Notes

A | Horizontal attack | Hits sidestepping opponents; often slower

B | Vertical attack | Fast and strong, but can be sidestepped

K | Kick | Quick, often good for pressure and lows

G | Guard | Hold to block; also used in throw breaks and special inputs

A+G | Throw | Throw variations use A+G with directions; see the Command List

B+G | Reversal Edge | Absorbs attacks and starts a clash

A+B+K | Critical Edge | Costs one bar of Soul Gauge

Throws can be broken by pressing the correct button as you're grabbed; each throw's break button is shown in the Command List. Learn your opponent's most common throws and their breaks.

8-Way Run

Tap or hold a direction to step or run. Short taps up/down are quick steps that dodge linear verticals. Running sideways at range lets you avoid projectiles and long verticals entirely.

Reversal Edge

  • Input: B+G. Hold it to absorb incoming attacks for a moment before releasing.
  • What happens: when it connects, the game enters a slow-motion clash. Both players choose an option (A, B, K, guard, or a step), and it resolves like rock-paper-scissors.
  • When to use: against predictable strings, against opponents who mash, or to buy time when you're on the ropes.
  • Risk: it's slow to start and can be sidestepped or punished if your opponent waits it out.

Soul Gauge, Critical Edge and Soul Charge

  • Soul Gauge fills as you deal and take damage, up to two bars.
  • Critical Edge (A+B+K): a big-damage super. Good as a punish or combo ender. Costs one bar.
  • Soul Charge: a timed power-up (a directional input plus A+B+K; check the common moves section of your Command List) that gives many characters new moves, stronger properties, or chip damage. Costs one bar. Some characters are built around Soul Charge; others prefer to save meter for Critical Edges.

Guard Impact

A parry performed with a direction plus A+B+G (listed under common moves in each character's Command List). A successful Guard Impact knocks back the attacker and leaves them open. Guard Impacts beat most attacks but lose to throws and specific moves, and a whiffed one is punishable.

Lethal Hits

Each character has moves that trigger a Lethal Hit when a specific condition is met (for example, hitting a sidestepping opponent with a certain move, landing a counter-hit, or punishing a whiffed Reversal Edge). Lethal Hits give dramatic knockdowns or crumples with big follow-up damage. The conditions are listed in your Command List; memorize the two or three that come up most.

Guard Crush and Break Attacks

  • Blocking too many attacks in a row drains your guard. When it breaks, you're wide open.
  • Break Attacks are moves that plow through defensive tools such as Reversal Edge and Guard Impact instead of being repelled; they are marked in the Command List and are your answer to opponents who lean on those tools.
  • Unblockables have long startup; step or interrupt them.

Ring Out and Wall Hits

Many stages have open edges. A strong horizontal or throw near the edge can win the round instantly. Stages with walls reward wall combos instead. Always know where you are on the stage.

Roster

SOULCALIBUR VI launched with 21 base characters, including newcomers Grøh and Azwel, series veterans such as Sophitia, Siegfried, Nightmare, Mitsurugi, Kilik, Xianghua, Ivy, Taki, Maxi, Voldo, Astaroth and Cervantes, and guest character Geralt of Rivia from The Witcher. Eight DLC characters followed, most of them through Season Pass 1 and Season Pass 2 (check each store listing to see which pack includes which fighter before buying):

DLC character | Notes

Tira | Season Pass 1

2B | Guest from NieR:Automata (December 2018); check whether your bundle includes her

Amy | Season Pass 1 (2019)

Cassandra | August 2019 (Season Pass 1)

Hilde | Season Pass 2

Haohmaru | Guest from Samurai Shodown (Season Pass 2)

Setsuka | August 2020 (Season Pass 2)

Hwang | December 2020 (Season Pass 2)

Season Pass 2 also included Character Creation Sets (such as Set E and Set F). Check what's already in your purchase before buying individual packs.

Choosing a Main

If you like | Look at

Simple, strong fundamentals | Mitsurugi, Sophitia, Kilik

Big damage and heavy weapons | Nightmare, Astaroth, Siegfried

Speed and pressure | Taki, Talim, Maxi

Tricky stances and mixups | Voldo, Ivy, Yoshimitsu

Zoning and range | Kilik, Ivy

Balance in the final patch is relatively even; pick the character you enjoy and learn them properly.

Single-Player Modes

  • Soul Chronicle: the main story, retelling the events of the original SOULCALIBUR (set in the 16th century) with individual character stories.
  • Libra of Souls: an RPG-style story with your created character traveling the world, making choices that affect your alignment. It's a great way to learn matchups because fights often come with special conditions.
  • Arcade: classic ladder.
  • Training: includes combat lessons, a command record/playback system, and position reset.
  • Creation: build custom fighters with a huge range of parts; new parts were added for free in many patches.
  • Museum: art and lore.

Online

  • Ranked Match and Casual Match (casual lobbies support spectators and consecutive battles).
  • Filter by connection quality and play players close to you where possible.
  • Since Ver. 1.50 you can turn opponents' Creation characters off in Ranked and Casual, so custom characters display as their base fighters.
  • Replays from older versions can't be viewed after battle-system patches.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Mashing Reversal Edge. Good players wait, step, or throw you.
  • Only using vertical attacks. Sidestepping opponents will eat you alive; mix in horizontals.
  • Never crouch-blocking. Learn which lows your opponent's character leans on.
  • Burning meter on Soul Charge without a plan. If your character doesn't gain much from it, save it for Critical Edge punishes.
  • Ignoring ring edges. Fight away from the edge when you're losing.
  • Not breaking throws. Watch the grab animation and press the matching button.

Advanced Tips

  • Whiff punishing: step a vertical, then punish the whiff with your fastest big move.
  • Frame data: find your safest pressure strings on block in Training and build your offense around them.
  • Conditioning: use a safe mid repeatedly, then switch to a throw or low when they start holding guard.
  • Reversal Edge follow-ups: learn what beats each option in the clash. Guarding and stepping are often the safest reads.
  • Punish Guard Impact attempts with throws.
  • Record the CPU to replay your opponent's favourite string, then practice your answer.
  • Lethal Hit routes: learn one reliable Lethal Hit conditioning setup and the max-damage follow-up.
