A spoiler-light guide to surviving the Baker estate: inventory and resource rules, a walkthrough outline of every area, how to handle each Baker boss, collectibles and missables, Madhouse advice, and what the DLC adds.
Researched September 2026 — current as of the May 11, 2026 PC update (Windows 11 compatibility verified, HDR and progression fixes). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.
Quick Start
- Save at tape recorders in safe rooms. On Easy and Normal saving is free; on Madhouse you need a Cassette Tape for each save. Safe rooms also have item boxes, and enemies won't follow you in.
- Your inventory is tiny. You start with limited slots and expand it with Backpacks. Keep ammo you're not using, spare keys and crafting parts in the item box.
- Chemical Fluid is your most valuable crafting item. Combine it with Herbs for First Aid Med, with gunpowder for ammo, or keep it for Psychostimulants (which reveal nearby items briefly). Early on, favor healing.
- Aim for the head, then back off. Molded enemies absorb a lot of body damage. Headshots and a few steps of retreat save ammo.
- Block with your arms. Raising your guard reduces damage a lot, even from bosses. Block, then counter when there's an opening.
- You can't kill Jack early. When he's stalking you in the Main House, break line of sight and leave rather than wasting ammo.
- Look for Antique Coins and Mr. Everywhere statuettes. Coins buy permanent upgrades at birdcages; statuettes are for achievements.
- Read documents and watch videotapes. Videotapes are playable flashbacks and often show you where something is hidden in the present.
- Easy is a legitimate choice. Your first run is about atmosphere; Madhouse is the real challenge, unlocked later.
- Enable ray tracing if you can. The DirectX 12 ray-traced version is the supported build; Capcom ended technical support for the DX11 non-ray-tracing branch on July 12, 2023.
Difficulty
Mode | What changes
Easy | More resources, weaker enemies, free saves
Normal | The intended experience, free saves
Madhouse | Unlocked after clearing the game. Tougher, faster enemies; saving requires Cassette Tapes; item and coin placements change; new enemy placements
Core Mechanics
Resources and crafting
- Herb + Chemical Fluid = First Aid Med (heal).
- Strong Chemical Fluid makes stronger healing and better ammo.
- Gunpowder / Separating Agent / Solid Fuel combine into various ammo types (e.g., handgun ammo, shotgun shells, burner fuel, enhanced ammo).
- Psychostimulants highlight items around you for a short time. Use them in big areas you might not come back to.
Weapons (main campaign)
Weapon | Notes
Knife | Unlimited use, for crates and for finishing downed enemies to save ammo
Handgun (G17 and M19) | Your main tool; aim for heads
Shotgun (M37) | Your key weapon for bosses and dangerous molded; see the Broken Shotgun trick below
Burner | Short-range flame; great against swarms of insects in the Old House
Grenade Launcher | Flame and neuro rounds; strong in late areas
.44 Magnum | Huge damage; save it for bosses
Machine Gun (MPM) | Late game, fast ammo drain
The Broken Shotgun trick: In the Main House, taking the shotgun from its display triggers a trap. Replace it with the Broken Shotgun to take the real one safely.
Enemies
- Molded: The standard enemy. Variants include Fat Molded (they spew acid and explode), Quadruped Molded (crawl on walls and ceilings) and Blade Molded (fast, deadly arm blades). Aim for the head and block when they close in.
- The Baker family: Jack, Marguerite and Lucas each own part of the estate and function as recurring threats and bosses.
Walkthrough Outline (Spoiler-Light)
1. The Guest House and the Main House (Jack)
- Ethan arrives in Dulvey, Louisiana, looking for his missing wife Mia. The Guest House is the tutorial.
- The Main House is your first big exploration hub. Jack Baker stalks the halls; you can hide, break line of sight and move on.
- You'll face Jack in two scripted boss fights here: one in the garage and a second in the basement. Keep moving, use corners, and shoot his head.
- Collect keys, reliefs and puzzle items to open the house fully. Zoe will contact you by phone and guide you toward a cure.
2. The Old House (Marguerite)
- Marguerite Baker controls insects. The Burner is your best friend here against bugs and hives.
- Stay out of her lantern light when she's patrolling; hide, then move.
- Her boss fight has you moving around a large arena while she crawls and throws insects. Target her glowing weak points and use the Burner or shotgun on her when she's exposed.
- Make sure you've grabbed everything in the Old House before moving on, as returning is limited later.
3. The Testing Area and the Barn (Lucas)
- Lucas Baker runs trap-filled rooms. The Happy Birthday videotape is the key to solving his big puzzle; watch it and remember the solution.
- After Lucas's area, the final Jack fight comes against his heavily mutated form. Bring shotgun shells and the Magnum if you have it; hit the eyes/weak points.
4. The Serum Choice
- You'll end up with one dose of the cure and two people to give it to: Mia or Zoe. This decides your ending. Save a separate file before choosing if you want both endings (there are achievements for each).
5. The Wrecked Ship (Mia)
- You play as Mia for a stretch. Resources are scarce, so conserve ammo, and watch any videotapes you find: as elsewhere in the game, they hint at how to get through the present-day version of the area.
- Some areas are one-way. Grab what you can as you go.
6. The Salt Mines and the Finale
- Back as Ethan, you push through the mines and the lab tied to Eveline's origins. Heavy molded presence, including Fat and Blade variants.
- Stock up on grenade launcher rounds and Magnum ammo before the final area.
- The finale is scripted. Follow prompts and keep shooting.
Collectibles
Antique Coins
- Coins are spent at birdcages found in the estate to unlock permanent upgrades such as Steroids (more max health) and a Stabilizer, plus weapon rewards. Each cage shows its coin price, so check before you spend.
- Easy and Normal share one coin set (achievement: Pelicans in Your Pocket, "Obtain all of the Antique Coins in Easy or Normal difficulty"). Madhouse has its own larger, rearranged set (Mad Pelicans). Use a location checklist for your difficulty; the exact counts differ between the two.
- Some coins are only reachable before you leave an area, so pick them up as you go.
Mr. Everywhere statuettes
- Mr. Everywhere statuettes (bobbleheads) are hidden all over the estate, the ship and the mines. Shoot or melee them to destroy them; follow a checklist if you're going for all of them.
- Achievements: He's Here, There, Everywhere! (destroy one) and Mr. Nowhere (destroy all).
- Several are in areas you can't return to after story progression.
Files and videotapes
- Files fill in lore; videotapes are playable flashbacks with puzzle clues and trophies.
Missables
- Area-locked collectibles: Main House, Old House, the ship and the mines each lock out after story beats. Clean each area before you trigger the next big event.
- The serum choice decides the ending; get the other ending from a separate save.
- Videotape challenges such as Out Before Dessert (Happy Birthday tape in under 5 minutes) and Can't Catch Me (Mia tape without being spotted by Marguerite) need replays of the tapes.
- Just Get Me Outta Here (finish in under 4 hours) is easiest on a second run on Easy once you know the route.
Boss Tips
Boss | Key tips
Jack (garage) | Keep distance, shoot his head, use the car scene to deal big damage
Jack (basement) | Break line of sight around pillars; handgun and shotgun headshots; block his big swings
Marguerite | Burner and shotgun whenever her weak spot is exposed; kill insect swarms before they surround you
Jack (final form) | Shoot the glowing eyes on his mutated body; Magnum and shotgun; keep moving to avoid grabs
Madhouse Survival
- Cassette Tapes are required to save; don't waste them on minor progress.
- Enemy placement and items change. Don't assume a room is safe because it was on Normal.
- Enemies hit harder and move faster. Finish downed molded with the knife to save ammo.
- Coins move. Use a Madhouse-specific checklist if you're going for Mad Pelicans.
- Achievement: Who's Your Daddy Now? for finishing on Madhouse.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Fighting Jack when he's just stalking you. You'll burn ammo and gain nothing.
- Carrying everything. Stash extras in the item box; use empty slots for new finds.
- Ignoring blocking. Guarding dramatically reduces damage, even from bosses.
- Crafting ammo too early. Healing is usually more valuable; craft ammo when you're actually running low.
- Rushing past collectibles. Many areas are one-way after story events.
- Using the Magnum on regular molded. Save it for bosses and Blade Molded.
- Forgetting to swap in the Broken Shotgun and triggering the trap.
Advanced Tips
- Knife finishes: When a molded falls, walk up and knife it to prevent it getting back up; conserve bullets.
- Use the layout: Corridors and doorways funnel molded into a line, which makes headshots easier and keeps you from being flanked.
- Headshot rhythm: Handgun headshot, step back, headshot again. Most molded die to a few if you're patient.
- Psychostimulants in big areas: Use them at the start of a new zone to plan your route.
- Speedrun reward run: Once you know the route, Easy plus minimal exploration gets you under 4 hours.
- Keep a manual save before the serum choice and before the Mia chapter so you can replay both.
