A complete PlanetSide 2 guide: factions, classes, how territory and alerts work, vehicles and air, certs and what to buy first, current 2026 patch status, and habits that stop you from being farmed.
Researched September 2026 — current as of the September 17, 2026 patch notes (crash-fix hotfix series, Koltyr's return, outfit resource changes). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.
What's Current (Summer–Fall 2026)
- Stability work: From June to September 2026, the patches focused on client crashes. The team fixed DLSS-related crashes (August 18), a garbage-collector crash for render objects (August 27), and several buffer and floating-point overflows (August 13). Daily crashes dropped by about 50% after the August 27 hotfix. The September 17 patch added clear on-screen messages when your connection drops or when the anti-cheat kicks you, so these no longer look like crashes, and it added GPU diagnostics for NVIDIA cards.
- FPS cap fix: A hotfix briefly treated MaximumFPS=0 as 30 FPS. The August 27 patch changed 0 back to unlimited. If your frame rate seemed stuck at 30, update and check that setting.
- Koltyr is back (August 13, 2026): A smaller battlefield for low-population hours. It has its own map pool and is always available next to the regular continents.
- Alerts and continent changes were accidentally broken by a hotfix and fixed on August 31, 2026.
- Outfit resources (September 17): Construction Outpost facilities now give an initial reward to outfits when captured, and outfit resources come in smaller, faster increments.
- Summer event directive "Operation: Ares" ran July 8 – August 10 (Summer Alpha) and August 13 – September 2 (Summer Bravo). Its tier rewards included certs, ISO-4, A7 and implant packs.
- Depot: A Random Camo Pack was added in July 2026 (1299 certs or 299 DBC).
Quick Start
- Pick the empire you like. The Terran Republic (red), New Conglomerate (blue) and Vanu Sovereignty (purple) each have their own weapons and vehicles. NSO (Nanite Systems Operatives) are robot soldiers who get assigned to help the lowest-population faction.
- Join a squad or platoon right away. Squads have up to 12 players and platoons up to 48. Being in one gives you spawn options, XP and someone to follow.
- Use the deploy screen to pick your fight. It shows where the battles are and how big they are. Medium-sized fights are the best place to learn. Huge zergs and empty bases teach you little.
- Play Combat Medic or Engineer first. Healing, reviving, repairing and resupplying earn a lot of XP and teach you the game.
- Spend your first certs on one good weapon or one core tool, not ten small things. Examples: the Medical Applicator for medics, better Ammunition Packs for engineers, or a strong weapon for your main class.
- Spot enemies with Q. Spotting marks them for your team and earns XP.
- Your nanites refill over time. Vehicles and consumables cost nanites, so do not waste them on vehicles you will lose in 10 seconds.
- Do not fight at the spawn room. Push the objective points instead of shooting into an enemy spawn shield.
- Hold points, not kills. Base captures, defenses and alerts pay a lot more than a good K/D.
Factions at a Glance
Faction | Identity | Style
Terran Republic (TR) | Militaristic, authoritarian | Large magazines and high fire rates. Prowler tank, Mosquito fighter
New Conglomerate (NC) | Rebellious freedom fighters | Hard-hitting, slower weapons. Vanguard tank, Reaver fighter
Vanu Sovereignty (VS) | Technocratic and alien-influenced | No bullet drop on many weapons. Magrider hover tank, Scythe fighter
NSO | Robot soldiers | Join the lowest-population faction. Chimera tank, NSO-specific weapons
Classes
Class | Role | Key tools
Infiltrator | Recon, sniping, hacking | Cloak, recon devices, hacking terminals and turrets
Light Assault | Mobility, flanking | Jump jets for rooftops and high ground, C-4
Combat Medic | Healing, revives | Medical Applicator, Nano-Regen Device, revive grenades
Engineer | Repairs, resupply, turrets | Nano-Armor Kit (repair tool), Ammunition Pack, deployable turrets, mines
Heavy Assault | Front-line damage | Shield abilities (such as Resist Shield), rocket launchers, LMGs
MAX | Heavy armored suit | Anti-infantry, anti-vehicle or anti-air arm weapons. Needs Engineer repairs
You can switch classes at any terminal or when you respawn. Most veterans have at least two classes they are good at.
How the War Works
Territory and the lattice
- Each continent is split into territories linked by a lattice. You can only attack territories connected to ones your faction controls.
- Capturing a base means holding its capture points until the timer runs out. Big bases have several points and generators.
- Sunderers (and their deployed spawn), Routers and Spawn Beacons give you forward spawns. Kill the enemy's forward spawns to break a push.
Alerts and continent locks
- Alerts are timed, continent-wide events. The faction with the most territory (or the objective the alert names) wins.
- Winning alerts can lock a continent, which rotates the war to another continent.
- Continents include Indar, Esamir, Amerish, Hossin and Oshur. Koltyr is back as a separate, always-available low-population map as of August 2026.
Directives
Directives are long-term challenges for weapons, classes and vehicles. Event directives like Operation: Ares have limited-time rewards.
Currencies and What to Spend Them On
Currency | Source | Spend on
Certs | Earned from XP | Weapons, attachments, class abilities, vehicle upgrades
Daybreak Cash (DBC) | Real money | Cosmetics, weapons, boosts
ISO-4 | Directives, rewards | Implants and implant upgrades
Nanites | Regenerate over time | Vehicles, MAX suits, consumables (grenades, C-4, medkits)
Recommended first cert purchases
- Your main class's ability or tool, for example the Medical Applicator's revive upgrades or the Engineer's Ammunition Pack.
- Suit slot upgrades such as Flak Armor. Suit slots are cheap and help on every class.
- Grenade bandolier or extra C-4, depending on class.
- A Sunderer build for your squad (spawn and ammo), if you want to become the squad's logistics player.
- One better weapon, once you know what you like. Try weapons with free trials before buying.
Vehicles and Air
Vehicle | Role
Flash | Fast quad bike for solo travel
Sunderer | The most important vehicle: mobile spawn point and ammo
Lightning | Light tank, good for new tank drivers
Harasser | Fast buggy, strong anti-vehicle in skilled hands
Main Battle Tanks (Prowler, Vanguard, Magrider, Chimera) | Faction tanks, stronger with a gunner
Valkyrie | Squad transport and harassment aircraft
Fighters (Mosquito, Reaver, Scythe, plus the shared Dervish heavy fighter) | Air-to-air and air-to-ground. Steep learning curve
Liberator | Gunship crewed by several players
Galaxy | Squad transport and flying spawn
ANT | Harvests Cortium for construction
Air tips: Flying has the steepest learning curve in the game. Practice in VR Training first, and do not burn all your nanites on fighters that die in 30 seconds.
Construction and Outfits
- Construction lets players build bases and fortifications from Cortium harvested with an ANT.
- Outfits (clans) earn outfit resources. As of September 17, 2026, capturing Construction Outpost facilities gives outfits an initial reward, and resources now come in smaller, faster increments.
- A good outfit gives you coordinated platoons, voice comms and a lot more fun. Check the outfit recruitment channels.
Settings and Performance (2026)
- Update your GPU drivers. DLSS crashes were fixed in the August 18 patch.
- Check MaximumFPS in UserOptions.ini. 0 means unlimited again (fixed August 27). A new config validator (August 18) fixes invalid values that used to cause crashes.
- Lower render distance and shadows in huge fights. Big battles are CPU-heavy.
- If the game "crashes" with a message, read it. Since September 17, dropped connections and anti-cheat kicks show clear messages instead of looking like crashes. The developers asked for screenshots of these messages on Discord.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Playing alone without a squad. You lose spawn options and XP.
- Pulling vehicles into lost fights. Nanites run out quickly.
- Spawn camping. It is not an objective, and it gives the enemy easy kills.
- Spreading certs thin. Buy one thing, test it, then buy the next.
- Ignoring Sunderers. Most bases fall because of forward spawns.
- Running across open fields. Vehicles and snipers farm players who do.
- Blaming every crash on the game. Check whether it was a connection drop or an anti-cheat kick, which have shown messages since September 17.
Advanced Tips
- Redeploy smartly. Use the deploy map to jump to fights that are still undecided, not to sieges that are already lost.
- Kill the spawn. Destroying enemy Sunderers and Routers breaks a push faster than killing 30 infantry.
- Medic and Engineer as a pair keep a whole squad alive. Build habits around resupply and revives.
- Use sound. Footsteps, cloaking and jump jets are audible. Headphones matter.
- Implants: Put ISO-4 into implants that suit your class (for example, faster regeneration or better awareness).
- Weapon mastery: Each weapon has medals up to Auraxium, for 1,160 kills.
- Low population? Koltyr (back since August 2026) is designed for low-population hours.
FAQ
Is PlanetSide 2 still alive in 2026? Yes. It gets regular patches (crash fixes, events and the return of Koltyr in 2026), and there are alerts and continent rotations every day.
Which faction should I pick? Whichever you like best. Each has its own weapons and vehicles. NSO fills in for whichever faction is underpopulated.
Why does my game keep crashing? A series of 2026 patches fixed many crashes. Update, check your driver, check MaximumFPS in your config, and read any error message. Connection and anti-cheat kicks now show their own message.
What should I buy first with certs? Your main class's core tool and suit slot upgrades, then a weapon you have tried with a free trial.
Is PlanetSide 2 pay-to-win? Almost everything that affects gameplay can be unlocked with certs. Money speeds things up and buys cosmetics.
What is Koltyr? A smaller battlefield that returned on August 13, 2026 for low-population hours. It is in a separate map pool and always available.
