How to survive your first weeks in New Eden: Alpha vs Omega, skills, ISK-making careers, security space, combat basics, and what the Cradle of War major update changed.
Researched September 2026 — current as of the Cradle of War Major Update (September 22, 2026). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.
Note on the developer: EVE Online's official site and Steam page now list the developer and publisher as Fenris Creations (the studio long known as CCP Games; dev staff still use "CCP" in places).
Quick Start
- Do the tutorial and the Air Career Program. The opening and the career agents pay out ISK, skill points, and free ships while teaching the UI. It is the best-value time you'll spend in your first week.
- Alpha is free and genuinely playable. Alphas train for free up to 5 million skill points at half speed and can fly combat ships up to battleship size. Omega unlocks everything.
- Always keep skills training. Skills train in real time, even while offline. Queue something long before logging off.
- Only fly what you can afford to lose. Rule one of EVE. Keep enough ISK to replace your ship and fit.
- Learn security status. High-sec (1.0 to 0.5) has CONCORD retaliation; low-sec (0.4 to 0.1) and null-sec (0.0 and below) do not protect you. Wormhole space has no local chat.
- Set autopilot to "safer" routes in the route settings so you don't path through low-sec by accident.
- Join a new-player-friendly corporation. EVE is dramatically better with people. EVE University and the in-game recruitment tools are good starting points.
- Never trust contracts, trades, or "ISK doubling" in local chat. Scams are legal in-game.
- Insure ships you can't easily replace and keep a clone jump plan in mind; your pod carries implants you lose on death.
Alpha vs Omega
Alpha (free) | Omega (subscription or PLEX)
Skill points | Free training to 5M SP (injectors up to 20.5M SP) | Unlimited
Training speed | Half speed | Full speed
Ships | Combat ships up to battleship, basic haulers; no T2 hulls in most cases | All ships, including T2, T3, capitals
Modules | Mostly Tech 1 | All
Missions | No Level 4 or 5 security missions | All
Multiboxing | Not allowed with an Alpha logged in | Allowed if all accounts are Omega
Industry and market | Extra 2% industry job tax, higher market taxes, remote selling limited to 5 jumps | Standard
Omega time can be bought with real money or with PLEX, the in-game item traded on the market for ISK. That means a successful player can pay for Omega with ISK alone. PLEX and Omega prices change and go on sale regularly, so check the in-game store rather than trusting old numbers.
The Interface and Core Controls
Action | Default
Orbit / keep at range / approach | Hold W / E / Q and click a target
Lock target | Ctrl + click
Warp to | S + click (or right-click menu)
Activate module | F1–F8 (high slots)
Dock / jump / activate gate | D + click
Stop ship | Ctrl + Space
Tactical overlay | Ctrl + D
Map | F10
Your Overview is the most important window in the game. Set up separate tabs for PvE (NPCs, gates, stations), PvP (players), and mining. The HUD itself is being evolved through an opt-in Feature Preview announced in August and September 2026; expect changes over the coming months.
Skills
- Skills train in real time, one at a time in a queue. There is no XP from combat.
- Each skill has levels I–V. Level V takes much longer than IV, so most players stop at IV for utility skills.
- Attributes and implants affect training speed. Remap attributes to match what you're training (for example, Perception and Willpower for spaceship command and gunnery).
- Skill books are bought from the market or in-game store and injected.
Early skill priorities
- Core fitting: CPU Management, Power Grid Management — you need these to fit anything.
- Navigation: Navigation, Evasive Maneuvering, Warp Drive Operation.
- Tanking: Shield Management / Hull Upgrades depending on your race, plus the resist compensation skills.
- One weapon system for your race (Gunnery skills for turrets, Missile Launcher Operation for missiles, Drones for drone boats).
- Racial frigate and destroyer skills, then cruiser.
Specialize. A pilot who is good at one weapon type is more useful than one who is mediocre at four.
Money-Making Careers
Activity | Where | Notes
Security missions | Agents in high-sec | Stable income; Level 4 missions require Omega
Mining | Asteroid belts, ore anomalies | Easy start with a Venture; watch out for gankers in expensive ships
Exploration | Data and relic sites via probe scanning | Great Alpha earner in a cheap frigate; valuable loot in low/null/wormhole space
Trading and hauling | Trade hubs (Jita is the biggest) | Requires capital and market knowledge
Industry | Manufacturing, reactions, planetary industry | Needs skills and blueprints; profit margins vary
Abyssal Deadspace | Filament-launched pockets | Timed PvE; lose the ship if the timer runs out
Faction Warfare and Insurgencies | Low-sec | PvP with PvE objectives; revamped in Cradle of War
Incursions | Organized fleet PvE | Very lucrative with an established community
Beginner-friendly picks: exploration in a cheap probing frigate (Heron, Imicus, Magnate, Probe) and security missions give the best return while you learn.
Combat Fundamentals
- Range and transversal decide turret hits. Orbiting close and fast makes big turrets miss; staying at optimal range maximizes your damage.
- Tank: shield, armor, or hull. Don't mix shield and armor tanks on one ship. Active tanks (repairers, boosters) use capacitor; buffer tanks rely on raw HP.
- Capacitor: energy for modules. Running out means no propulsion, no repairs, sometimes no guns.
- Tackle: Warp Disruptors and Scramblers stop ships warping. Stasis Webifiers slow them. Scrams also shut off microwarpdrives.
- Overheating modules gives extra performance at the cost of heat damage. Use it in emergencies.
- Drones are extra damage and utility for most hulls; train them early.
Staying alive
- In low-sec and null, keep directional scan (D-scan) running and watch Local chat.
- Use instant undocks and safe spots (bookmarked points in space off-grid from celestials).
- Don't autopilot expensive cargo through high-traffic systems; suicide ganks exist.
- Clone: set your medical clone to a station you actually use.
Space Types at a Glance
Space | Security | What you get | Risk
High-sec | 1.0–0.5 | CONCORD protection, missions, trade hubs | Ganks, wardecs, scams
Low-sec | 0.4–0.1 | Faction Warfare, Insurgencies, better exploration | Gate camps, pirates
Null-sec | 0.0 and below | Player sovereignty, best ores and anomalies | Everything
Wormhole (J-space) | Unknown | Sleeper sites, no Local chat, dynamic connections | Hunters, collapsing holes
Pochven | Triglavian space | Filament-based access, Triglavian content | Organized PvP
What Changed in Cradle of War (September 2026)
- Ansiblex jump bridges now hold a limited capacitor charge that recharges slowly. Every ship through a bridge spends charge; different hulls cost different amounts and jump distance matters. Bridges now carry subcapitals only, and only for pilots in the owning alliance. Coalition partners need their own infrastructure.
- Pirate Insurgencies are faster and more contested: shorter Forward Operating Base (FOB) reinforcement cycles, more reward from actually winning the Insurgency, and a new battlecruiser-focused site from corruption stage two upward that grants a bonus equivalent to another skill level while you're inside.
- Class 1–3 wormhole combat sites were modernized: smarter NPC electronic warfare, energy neutralizers now work against NPCs, objective tracking in the info panel, and visual updates.
- Pochven: Vigilance Points now allow fleets of up to 12 pilots, and Observatory Flashpoints dropped from 15 to 12. Wormhole connections, NPC roaming fleets, and four new drone-module mutaplasmids were added.
- Ship balance: Marauders and Black Ops battleships lost mass (good for wormhole traversal), HACs like the Deimos, Phobos, and Vigilant got medium railgun range back, and Lancer dreadnoughts got better resist profiles.
- Rampant Drone Fabricator sites became permanent in C1–C6 wormholes in July 2026, with the wave cap raised to 100.
Behind the scenes, EVE began its migration to Python 3 on August 25, 2026. It's meant to be invisible to players.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Flying a ship you can't replace. If losing it would make you quit, don't undock it.
- Undocking with a full cargo of loot in an unfitted hauler. Fit tank (or use a blockade runner once you can).
- Training every skill to V. Level IV usually gives most of the benefit for far less time.
- Accepting contracts without reading them. Check item type, quantity, and location; scams rely on skim-reading.
- Staying solo forever. Most of EVE's best content needs a group.
- Ignoring D-scan and Local. Most deaths in low and null are visible coming.
- Buying from the first market order. Compare regions; Jita prices are usually lower.
Advanced Tips
- Jump clones let you keep an expensive implant set in one place and a cheap clone for PvP.
- Fit simulation: use the in-game fitting tool to test before buying. Check capacitor stability and CPU/powergrid before undocking.
- Market orders: buy orders are cheaper than instant buying; margin trading in hubs is a skill (Accounting, Broker Relations) and patience game.
- Probe scanning: learn to use the formation presets and narrow down signatures at shorter scan ranges; exploration income scales with how fast you scan.
- Watch the Community Beat and Major Update notes. EVE's balance and risk calculations shift every few months.
- Follow the Council of Stellar Management (CSM), the elected player council that feeds back to developers. Cradle of War's changes were shaped partly by CSM, Factional Warfare Parliament, and Wormhole UN feedback, so their minutes are a good early warning of what's coming.
FAQ
Is EVE Online free to play? Yes, as an Alpha clone. Omega is optional and unlocks all ships and full-speed training.
How long does it take to be "useful"? A focused new pilot can be useful in a small fleet within days (tackle frigates are always needed). Specialized roles take weeks to months.
Can I pay for my subscription with in-game money? Yes, via PLEX bought from the market with ISK.
What happens when I die? You lose your ship and some of its modules drop as loot. Your pod may also be destroyed, sending you to your medical clone and losing any implants.
Can I play EVE casually? Yes. Skills train offline, and exploration, missions, and industry fit short sessions.
Is the Alliance Tournament still running? Yes; the 2026 preliminaries have finished and finals were scheduled for late October per the September 25 Community Beat.
