What's new and how to play well in FC 27's first weeks: the gameplay changes that matter, new controls, Ultimate Team's rebuilt systems, The Grounds, Career Mode's new transfer market, and PC settings.
Researched September 2026 — current as of the FC 27 launch update (worldwide release September 25, 2026). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.
Quick Start
- Defend manually. FC 27 reduces AI auto-tackling and AI interception reach in Competitive gameplay, while buffing manual jockey speed and stand-tackle range. If you relied on AI defenders in FC 26, you'll concede more until you adapt.
- Aim your through balls. Through passes now follow your directional input strictly, and dinked passes are fully manual (you aim and set power).
- Learn Triggered Curved Runs. L1+R1 (LB+RB) bends a teammate's run around defenders. L1+R1+X (LB+RB+A) passes and sends the passer on a curved run.
- Attack corners yourself. During the new pre-delivery window you control movement in the box; hold R1/RB to use the new Avoidance mechanic.
- In FUT, max PlayStyles+ is three. Down from five. Attributes matter more.
- SBCs work differently. Streamlined SBCs let you submit items toward a target score over multiple submissions instead of building full squads.
- Play Squad Battles and Rivals for Champions. Champions Qualification Points (CQP) come from both, and the Division 6 requirement is gone.
- Career transfers take time now. Deals move through enquiry, negotiation and completion stages across days, so start early in the window.

Gameplay Changes That Matter
Defending
Change | What it means
AI auto-tackles reduced | Defenders hold position and support until you take control
Manual defending buffed | Faster jockey, longer stand-tackle range
Teammate contain adjusted | AI teammates mark from further away; you must switch to press
AI interception reach reduced | Lazy passes are less likely to be cut out by the AI, and your AI won't bail you out either
Practical tips:
- Switch to the defender nearest the passing lane, not the ball.
- Jockey (L2/LT) to show the attacker wide, then stand tackle when the ball leaves their foot.
- Use teammate contain in short bursts only.
Passing
- Through passes follow your stick direction exactly. Aim into space ahead of the runner.
- Dinked passes are fully manual: aim and power both matter.
- Ground passing remains the safest option; attribute quality matters more than PlayStyles.
Dribbling
Off-balance dribbling (PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Switch 2 only): elite dribblers with high Balance, Agility and Dribbling can keep control through stumble animations after contact. Low-rated dribblers lose the ball more.
Attacking Movement
Mechanic | Input (PS / Xbox) | Use
Triggered Curved Run | L1+R1 / LB+RB | Bend a teammate's run around a defender
Pass and Follow Run | L1+R1+X / LB+RB+A | Pass and send the passer on a curved run into space
Manually triggered runs now stop after a limited distance, so re-trigger them. The AI also makes smarter curved runs on its own and avoids crowded areas (Attacking Spatial Awareness).
Corners and Set Pieces
- Pre-delivery window: the camera moves to the box and you control a player's movement before the ball is delivered.
- Avoidance (hold R1/RB): become more evasive and move through crowded areas without getting blocked. Defenders can use it too.
- No auto-positioning: attackers don't drift to perfect spots; time your movement.
- Crossing reworked: deliveries land in space rather than on a player; aim and power shape the ball heavily.
- Headers: clean contact needs precision, but good contact is more accurate than in FC 26.
PlayStyles Rebalance
Ten PlayStyles were adjusted: Finesse Shot, Technical Dribbler, Intercept, Rapid, Quick Step, Pinged Pass, Tiki Taka, Jockey, Precision Header and Low Driven. The common direction is a smaller gap between having the PlayStyle and the underlying attributes.
PlayStyle | Change
Finesse Shot | Attributes play a larger role
Technical Dribbler | Smaller gap between base and +
Intercept | Players with high Interceptions do better even without it
Rapid / Quick Step | Smaller speed boosts; Acceleration matters more
Pinged Pass / Tiki Taka | Trap (first-touch) error reduction removed; Tiki Taka also lost its animation speed boost
Jockey | Higher sprint acceleration for players without it; smaller PlayStyle exit boost
Precision Header | Accuracy gap rebalanced
Low Driven | Shot speed boost removed; accuracy boost kept
Takeaway: a card with great stats but fewer PlayStyles is a better buy than it was in FC 26.
Football Ultimate Team (FUT)
Core Changes
- PlayStyles+ capped at three per item (was five).
- Smaller, steadier upgrades through the season; your players stay in your squad longer.
- Campaign squads are smaller and more focused, and there are around five fewer weeks featuring them.
- Roles++ unlocked on all special/Campaign items.
- Rarity rework: the Common/Rare split is gone; packs are named by size (Mini, Small, Large, Jumbo, Giant). Quick Sell values were realigned.
- Holographic items: Regular (87 OVR and below) and Pristine (88+ OVR).
- Chemistry: ICON nation contribution reduced from +2 to +1; Heroes and Hall of FUT league contribution reduced from +2 to +1.
- ICONs: base ICONs start at 88 OVR.
- Hall of FUT: a new item tier celebrating FUT legacy players.
New Systems
Feature | How it works | Why it matters
Streamlined SBCs | Pick eligible club items; each contributes score by rating/rarity. Submit in parts; some SBCs allow duplicates and have flexible or no OVR minimums | Much less fodder juggling; dump duplicates here
Gallery | Records items that pass through your club into themed Sets (Nations, Leagues, Clubs, Campaigns) with grades, even after you sell or submit them | Earns cosmetics, Gallery Tokens and Hall of FUT items
Evolution Pathways | Branching upgrade choices; preview the whole Evolution chain before committing | Plan the attributes and PlayStyles your squad actually needs
PlayStyles Lab | Customize PlayStyles on eligible items | Fix a key player's missing PlayStyle
Campaign Hub | One screen for current Objectives, SBCs, Evolutions and Gallery Sets | Easier to track what's live
Modes and Rewards
Mode | FC 27 changes
Division Rivals | Rewards scale more with Division; Bounties return more often; all pack rewards tradeable; earns CQP
Champions | 15-match Finals; qualify with CQP from Rivals and Squad Battles; Division 6 requirement removed
Squad Battles | Now a PvE progression path: CQP, more post-match coins, Season Points
Live Events | Online and Single Player Live Events rotate seasonally with themed squads and house rules; single-player events from Semi-Pro to Legendary
Post-match rewards | End-of-match rewards are now a major part of the economy (more coins per match and Season Points), instead of concentrating rewards in weekly payouts
FUT Starter Plan
- Do the starter objectives and Squad Battles first for coins and early packs.
- Play Rivals to set your division; better division means better rewards.
- Earn CQP from Rivals and Squad Battles, then play Champions.
- Feed duplicates and untradeables into Streamlined SBCs; everything you own adds to the Gallery anyway.
- Spend on players with strong attributes in your formation's roles, not on PlayStyle+ counts alone.
The Grounds
A new social football space on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Switch 2. A central Terrace hub connects three districts: Montclair, Zeiza and Parkside (inspired by Paris, Buenos Aires and Britain).
- Archetypes and Amps: your player is built from an Archetype plus Amps. Standard Amps let you test boosts temporarily; player-themed Signature Amps combine attributes, PlayStyles and Signature Perks. Amps refresh regularly.
- Resetting a build is free. Experiment.
- Modes: 5v5 Rush matches, minigames and seasonal events rotate through the hub; check the Terrace for what is live this week.
Career Mode
Transfer Market Overhaul
- Staged negotiations: enquiry, negotiation and completion phases that take time.
- Valuations use TransferRoom's Expected Transfer Value (xTV) system.
- New clauses: installments, bonuses, buyback options, first refusal and sell-on clauses; player exchanges and loan-back deals.
- New 2D negotiation interface.
Other Career Changes
Feature | What it does
Dynamic OVR | Ratings move with form, morale and Match Fitness
Match Fitness | New indicator combining energy and injury status
Scouting | Reports in four stages: Tactical Fit, Future, Financial Assessment, Status
Growth Profiles | Six development trajectories
Liga MX | Added with Apertura/Clausura format
Manager Live | Starter Challenges plus Creator Challenges you can build and share with other players
Player Career | Performance-based Rivalries with AI competitors; a Practice Arena reachable from the Central Hub
ICONs | Playable ICONs rotate in by season; check the Career hub for who is currently unlocked
Career tips:
- Start transfer talks early in the window; deals can run out of time.
- Use loan-backs and sell-on clauses to buy young talent cheaply without killing your budget.
- Keep players happy and fit; Dynamic OVR means a benched star literally gets worse.
PC Notes
- Faster startup and new graphics presets: Performance, Balanced, High, Ultra.
- A VRAM usage indicator in graphics settings.
- Redesigned keyboard controls (WASD / arrow keys).
- Steam Friends integration through EA Connect.
- A controller is still recommended for competitive FUT.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Waiting for the AI to tackle. It won't in FC 27. Take control.
- Lazy through balls. They go exactly where you point.
- Buying cards for PlayStyle+ counts. The cap is three and attributes matter more.
- Ignoring Squad Battles. They now give CQP for Champions and Season Points.
- Treating SBCs like FC 26. Submit partial progress and dump duplicates.
- Starting transfers on deadline day. Staged negotiations need time.
Advanced Tips
- Manual jockey plus stand tackle is the strongest defensive combo with the increased tackle range.
- Chain curved runs. Trigger, pass, re-trigger; runs stop after a limited distance.
- Corner routine: use Avoidance to lose your marker, then aim the cross into the space you're running to.
- Plan Evolution chains with the preview so you don't lock a player into the wrong upgrade.
- Gallery sets reward variety. Cycling different items through your club builds sets even if you sell them.
- Career: watch Match Fitness before big games and rotate aggressively.
