A practical guide to Batman: Arkham Origins on PC: combat and predator fundamentals, the gadgets and upgrades worth taking, how to approach the eight assassins, side content and collectibles, and what still works now that online services are gone.
Researched September 2026 — current as of the final PC patch. Online services (multiplayer and related features) were retired on 4 December 2016; the single-player campaign and DLC still work offline.
Status at a Glance
Feature | Status (September 2026)
Story campaign | Fully playable offline
Cold, Cold Heart (story DLC) | Playable if owned
Initiation (DLC challenge) | Playable if owned
Multiplayer (Joker gang vs. Bane gang vs. Batman and Robin) | Shut down 4 December 2016
Further patches | WB Games Montréal announced in early 2014 that it was ending patch work to focus on DLC
Quick Start
- The story is set on Christmas Eve. Black Mask puts a $50 million bounty on Batman, drawing eight assassins to Gotham: Bane, Deadshot, Deathstroke, Copperhead, Firefly, Electrocutioner, Killer Croc, and Lady Shiva.
- Counter everything. Freeflow combat is rhythm-based: strike, and counter when the blue lightning icon appears above an enemy. Keep your combo alive to unlock takedowns.
- Disable the jamming towers early. Gotham's hijacked communication towers block Batwing fast travel; taking each one down opens fast travel for that district and reveals nearby Enigma collectibles.
- Use Detective Mode sparingly in fights, freely in exploration. It highlights enemies, points of interest, and interactive scenery, but it's easy to become reliant on it.
- Spend upgrade points on armor first. Armor and combat upgrades make the rest of the game smoother.
- Save often and keep backups. Arkham Origins launched with save-corrupting bugs, and some were never fully fixed. Keep a copy of your save folder.
- Crime scenes are optional-ish puzzles. They're mandatory in the main story but short; use the reconstruction to rewind and find clues.
- Side content matters. Most Wanted missions give unique upgrades; Crimes in Progress give XP.
- After the credits, New Game Plus and I Am the Night mode (a harder mode with one life) unlock for replay.
Core Mechanics
Freeflow Combat
Action | What it does
Strike | Standard attack; builds the combo meter
Counter | Responds to the blue lightning icon; essential
Cape Stun | Stuns an enemy (needed for shield and some armored enemies)
Evade / vault | Dodges over enemies or away from attacks
Beat Down | Rapid strikes on a stunned enemy
Special Combo Takedowns | Unlocked at combo milestones; instantly remove an enemy
Ground Takedown | Knocks out a downed enemy for good
New enemy types:
Enemy | How to deal with them
Martial Artists | They counter your counters; watch for the prompt and counter again
Armored Enforcers | Armor must be broken off before normal hits land; use Beat Downs or Shock Gloves
Shield enemies | Vault over them and hit from behind, or use the Shock Gloves
Stun baton enemies | Don't hit from the front; vault or use Shock Gloves
Venom-enhanced henchmen | Superhuman-strength heavies; stun then Beat Down
Knife and gun enemies | Deal with guns first; knives need a dodge
Shock Gloves: A late-game combat power-up. Once charged through combos, they let you ignore shields, stun batons, and armor. Save them for big mixed brawls.
Predator Encounters
- Grapnel to vantage points and gargoyles; stay above your enemies.
- Silent Takedowns (sneak up behind) and Inverted Takedowns (from gargoyles) are your main tools.
- Remote Claw can pull enemies into objects or string two of them together.
- Keep an eye on "jammers" and enemies with thermal goggles; they complicate predator rooms.
- Don't let two enemies see you take down a third: panic spreads, and they search the area.
Gadgets (common unlocks through the story)
Gadget | What it does
Batarang | Stuns enemies and hits switches
Remote Batarang | Guided batarang for distant switches
Batclaw | Pulls enemies and objects
Explosive Gel | Breaks weak walls and knocks out enemies
Remote Claw | Tethers two points to create a tightrope, or two enemies together
Glue Grenade | Sticks enemies in place; also blocks vents and machinery
Concussion Detonator | Area stun in combat
Disruptor | Disables guns and mines remotely
Cryptographic Sequencer | Hacks security panels
Shock Gloves | Supercharges combat
Upgrades and XP
- XP comes from combat (combo variety pays better), predator takedowns, side missions, and collectibles.
- Spend points across the upgrade paths (armor, combat, predator, and gadget upgrades). Armor and combat first; then gadget upgrades like quicker Batclaw and a better Remote Claw.
- The Dark Knight System gives challenges that grant extra unlocks when completed; check the menu for their requirements.
Story Progression
The main story follows Batman's hunt for Black Mask and the assassins during a single night. Rough flow:
- Blackgate Prison opening sequence, ending in the Killer Croc fight.
- Penguin's ship, the Final Offer — Electrocutioner and a duel with Deathstroke.
- Lacey Towers and the Black Mask trail, including crime scene reconstructions.
- Gotham Merchants Bank — the Joker is revealed as the man behind the "Black Mask" attacks.
- Hunt the remaining assassins — Firefly, Copperhead (Sionis Steel Mill), and repeated run-ins with Bane. Deadshot and Lady Shiva are Most Wanted side content.
- Gotham Royal Hotel, then the Blackgate finale and the last confrontations with Joker and Bane.
Assassin and Boss Tips
Boss | Tips
Killer Croc | Opening fight at Blackgate; dodge his charges and punish after he misses
Deathstroke | A counter-driven duel: watch his animation, press counter when prompted, avoid getting hit twice
Electrocutioner | Short encounter; a famous punchline fight
Firefly | Aerial fight on a bridge; use the Batclaw and glide to catch him
Copperhead | A hallucination-based fight; counter her clones and focus the real one
Bane | Two encounters: dodge his charges, stun him with Batarangs, then hit; the final fight uses Shock Gloves heavily
Lady Shiva | Part of the Most Wanted content; a combat challenge
Deadshot | Most Wanted; approach using predator tactics, stay out of his line of fire
Side Content
- Most Wanted missions: Target villains around Gotham, including Anarky, Deadshot, Lady Shiva, Mad Hatter, and the Enigma. Some unlock upgrades or special gadgets.
- Crimes in Progress: Random street fights that pay out XP.
- Enigma datapacks and extortion data: Collectibles scattered around the city. Disabling the jamming towers helps you locate them.
- Anarky's tags and bombs: Part of the Anarky side quest; track down bombs across districts.
- Crime scenes (Case Files): Optional investigations that reward XP and lore.
Cold, Cold Heart DLC
- Released April 2014. Set on New Year's Eve; tells Mr. Freeze's origin story.
- Batman uses the XE suit for thermal resistance and freeze-related combat.
- Standalone from the main campaign save; worth playing after the credits.
Initiation DLC
- Released December 2013. A challenge-focused add-on where Bruce Wayne trains under the ninjutsu master Kirigi before becoming Batman.
PC Tips
- The game is built on Unreal Engine 3 and runs comfortably on modern hardware.
- If you encounter crashes, try disabling PhysX or lowering it; Origins used PhysX effects for smoke and debris.
- Back up your saves before major story beats, given the known save-corruption issues from launch.
- Controllers are fully supported and most players find combat smoother on a gamepad.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Mashing Strike. It breaks combos. Rhythm and counters keep your flow.
- Ignoring enemy variety. Armored, shield, and Martial Artist enemies each need a specific answer.
- Standing on the ground in predator rooms. Stay high and pick targets one at a time.
- Skipping upgrades to armor. Late fights are much harder without them.
- Relying on a single save. The save bugs are real; keep backups.
- Skipping side content. It's where a lot of upgrades and lore live.
Advanced Tips
- Combo variety earns far more XP than repeating the same attack.
- Shock Gloves ignore enemy types that would otherwise stop your combo; use them for achievement combos.
- Remote Claw can yank armed enemies into each other or off ledges.
- Glide-kick into brawls to start combos at speed.
- New Game Plus brings tougher enemy mixes and removes the counter warning icons, so you must read enemy animations instead. It's the best training ground for I Am the Night.
- I Am the Night mode requires finishing the game without dying; practice on New Game Plus first.
- Fast travel smartly. Once a district's tower is down, the Batwing saves long glides between Most Wanted objectives; clear towers before hunting collectibles.
- Case Files reward patience. In crime scene reconstructions, scrub the timeline back and forth and scan each highlighted clue before moving on; if you're stuck, there's usually one more clue at a different point in the timeline.
