Everything you need to get comfortable in VRChat on Steam: setup, controls, menus, instances, safety settings, Trust Ranks, avatars and cross-platform compatibility, creating your own content, and the newest client features.
Researched September 2026 — current as of VRChat Release 2026.3.2 (build 1901, September 1, 2026). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.
Quick Start
- VRChat is free on Steam (App 438100) and works in VR or on desktop with mouse and keyboard. You don't need a headset to start.
- Make a VRChat account rather than only logging in with Steam. Content uploading and some features require a VRChat account.
- Set your Safety Shield level first. "Normal" is a good default; switch to "Maximum" if you are ever overwhelmed or getting crashed by avatars.
- Learn the Quick Menu and Action Menu. Almost everything (muting, blocking, emotes, changing avatars, safety) lives there.
- Choose an avatar from public avatar worlds or the built-in avatar list. Prefer ones with a good Performance Rank so others can see you.
- Pick instance types deliberately. Public instances are open to everyone; Friends+ or Invite instances are calmer.
- Mute and block freely. They are private tools: people are not notified.
- Your Trust Rank rises by genuinely playing — exploring, making friends, and creating. AFK farming does not help.
- Keep your mic etiquette clean: don't blast audio, and respect personal space.
What Is New in 2026
Release | Date | Highlights
2026.1.1 | January 27 | World favorites for VRC+ subscribers doubled from 400 to 800
2026.2.3 | June 22 | Companion updates, customizable UI background, world-creator prop ability toggles, steady cam improvements
2026.3.1 | August 12 (build 1885) | In-client bug reporting (Canny), SDF stickers and emojis for crisp rendering, camera black-and-white and "Dog Vision" filters, redesigned Friends/Groups user cells, improved VRCObjectSync reliability, prop abilities controls for instance creators
2026.3.2 | September 1 (build 1901) | Try-before-you-buy accessory editor, throw your camera to close it (can be disabled), updated Action/Radial Menu with UI theme colors, long-press to Reset Avatar, personal mirror presets, no more brief T-pose when humanoid avatars load
Platforms
Platform | Notes
PC VR (SteamVR, Meta Link, Valve Index, Vive, etc.) | Full experience, all PC avatars and worlds
PC desktop | Mouse and keyboard or gamepad; limited avatar gestures
Standalone headsets (Meta Quest, Pico, Vive XR Elite) | Native Android version; cross-play with PC
Phones | Mobile app on Android; check the official site for current mobile availability
Cross-platform content: Android-based versions (Quest, mobile) can only load worlds and avatars that were built for Android and meet its performance limits. PC users see PC versions. Since 2024, VRChat can automatically generate fallback avatars so Quest/mobile players see something reasonable instead of a blank or generic model.
Desktop Controls (defaults)
Action | Key
Move | WASD
Run | Shift
Jump | Space
Crouch / Prone | C / Z
Quick Menu (Main Menu opens from it) | Esc
Action Menu | R
Toggle / push-to-talk microphone | V
Grab / use | Left mouse (E also interacts)
Drop held item | Right mouse
Hide/show HUD | Ctrl + H
Cycle nameplates | Ctrl + N
Controls can be viewed and changed in the settings; VR controls depend on your controller type and are shown in the in-game control guide.
Menus and Interface
- Quick Menu: the hub for your mic, camera, safety shield, muting and blocking people, and quick settings. Select a player to see their profile and moderation options.
- Main Menu: worlds, avatars, social (friends, groups), settings, and your profile.
- Action Menu / Radial Menu: emotes, expressions, avatar toggles (outfits, props), and quick actions. As of 2026.3.2, "Reset Avatar" needs a long-press to avoid accidents.
- Camera: in-game photos and a stream/steady cam; 2026.3.1 added color filters and 2026.3.2 lets you toss the camera to close it.
- Personal mirror: spawnable from menus; 2026.3.2 adds presets so you can save setups.
Instances (where you are)
Every world can have many separate copies ("instances"). The type controls who can join:
Instance | Who can join
Public | Anyone
Friends+ | Your friends and friends of anyone inside
Friends | Only the creator's friends
Invite+ | Invited players, and anyone inside can invite
Invite | Only people the creator invites
Group instances | Members of a VRChat Group (public, plus, or members-only variants)
Beginner tip: Public instances of popular hangout worlds are lively but can be chaotic. Friends+ instances are the easiest way to find calmer groups through people you have met.
Safety and Moderation
Safety Shield levels
Level | Use when
Maximum | You are new or overwhelmed; most features only show for friends
Normal | Everyday default
Custom | You want per–Trust Rank control over voice, avatars, audio, animations, shaders, particles, and more
None | Not recommended — disables most protections and leaves you exposed to crash attempts
Personal tools
- Mute: silences someone for you only; they are not notified.
- Block: you can't see or hear them and they can't see or hear you. VRChat doesn't send them a notification.
- Show/Hide Avatar: force someone's avatar visible or hidden, regardless of your shield.
- Report: use the in-client report tools for harassment, and for bugs use the new in-client bug reporting (2026.3.1).
Trust Ranks
From lowest to highest: Visitor → New User → User → Known User → Trusted User.
- New User can upload avatars and worlds (with a VRChat account), but worlds stay private at this rank.
- User can publish worlds to Community Labs.
- Ranks rise through time spent actively playing, making friends, and creating content. A VRC+ subscription gives a one-time boost. AFK idling, low-effort uploads, and mass friending do not help.
- Many players use Safety Shield rules keyed to Trust Rank, so ranking up means more people will see your avatar and hear your audio by default.
Avatars
Performance Ranks
Avatars are rated Excellent, Good, Medium, Poor, or Very Poor based on polygons, materials, bones, lights, particles, and so on. Many players hide Very Poor avatars, and Android/Quest has stricter limits, so a heavy avatar may appear as a fallback or impostor to many people.
Finding avatars
- Avatar worlds: community worlds with "pedestals" where you clone public avatars.
- Built-in and marketplace options: VRChat includes default avatars and has a creator marketplace where you can buy content with VRChat Credits.
- Accessories: as of 2026.3.2, you can preview every customization option in the editor before purchasing.
- Favorites: save avatars and worlds to favorites; VRC+ subscribers get more slots.
Upload your own
- Reach New User rank with a VRChat account.
- Install the VRChat Creator Companion (VCC), which sets up the correct Unity version and the VRChat SDK.
- Import your model, set up the avatar descriptor (view position, visemes, eye tracking), then build and upload from the SDK panel.
- Build an Android version as well if you want Quest and mobile players to see it properly.
Worlds
- Browse by category in the Worlds menu or through friends.
- Community Labs holds newly published worlds that haven't been promoted to general discovery yet.
- World creators use Udon (VRChat's scripting system) and UdonSharp for games, clubs, and interactive spaces.
- As of 2026.3.1, VRCObjectSync is more reliable, so synced objects in world games should behave more consistently.
VRChat+ (VRC+)
An optional subscription that supports the game. Benefits include expanded favorites (800 world favorites since 2026.1.1), custom profile images and emojis/stickers, a one-time Trust boost, and other cosmetic extras. It does not affect gameplay. Check the in-app store for current pricing in your region.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Using "None" safety. It exposes you to crasher avatars and loud audio.
- Wearing a Very Poor avatar everywhere. Many people will see you as a fallback or blocked silhouette.
- Never making a VRChat account. Steam-only logins block uploading and slow your progress.
- Joining only Public instances and then concluding VRChat is chaotic. Try Friends+ or community Group events.
- Leaving your mic open with background noise; use push-to-talk or toggle mute.
- Ignoring comfort settings in VR. Snap turning, vignette, and seated mode help avoid motion sickness.
- Clearing your cache blindly when things break; it forces redownloads. Use it as a last step.
Advanced Tips
- Custom shield rules: hide avatars, audio, and particles for Visitors and New Users, but allow them for Known and Trusted Users and friends. This is a good balance for public worlds.
- OSC and eye/face tracking: VRChat supports OSC, used by apps for face tracking, heart-rate displays, and avatar parameter control.
- Full-body tracking (trackers, including inside-out options) gives much more expressive movement; calibrate in the menu while in T-pose.
- Groups: join community Groups to find events, receive announcements, and access group-only instances.
- Performance: limit avatar downloads by size in settings, and lower mirror resolution in crowded worlds to keep frame rate up.
- Photos and video: the camera's steady cam (improved in 2026.2.3), color filters, and stream camera mode are the built-in tools for recording and streaming content.
FAQ
Is VRChat free? Yes. VRChat is free on Steam and other platforms. VRC+ and marketplace purchases are optional.
Can I play VRChat without VR? Yes. Desktop mode works with mouse and keyboard or a gamepad, though some avatar gestures are limited.
How do I rank up my Trust Rank? Play actively: explore worlds, make friends, and create content. There is no published formula, and AFK time or mass friending doesn't help.
Why can't my Quest friends see my avatar? The avatar has no Android version or exceeds Android performance limits. Upload an Android build, or pick an avatar that supports cross-platform.
What's in the latest VRChat update? Release 2026.3.2 (September 1, 2026) added the accessory try-on editor, camera throwing, Radial/Action Menu improvements, long-press Reset Avatar, and personal mirror presets.
How do I stop someone harassing me? Block them from the Quick Menu (they can't see you, and you can't see them), switch to Maximum Safety if needed, and report them. Moving to a Friends+ or Invite instance also helps.
How do I upload an avatar? Get to New User rank with a VRChat account, install the VRChat Creator Companion, set up your avatar in Unity with the SDK, and upload.
