How to survive the mad Sultan's weekly cards in Sultan's Game: what the four card types demand, how attributes and rituals work, money and follower management, difficulty choice, and the planning habits that turn early deaths into long, story-rich runs.
Researched September 2026 — current as of Patch 1.0.19950 (August 13, 2026). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs. Light spoilers for early events are included; late-game endings are only mentioned by name.
Quick Start
- Every week the Sultan hands you a card. Break it within the deadline or you die. The deadline is 7 days on the lower difficulties and 5 days on the hardest. Failing gives the "Is that how you entertain your Sultan?" defeat ending.
- Card tier sets the difficulty. Stone, Bronze, Silver, and Gold cards need increasingly serious deeds, and matching checks at levels 1 to 4.
- Money comes first. A steady gold income makes Extravagance cards trivial and funds everything else. Many guides recommend the Merchant Family background for its extra starting gold.
- Build a "break queue". Some events do not expire. Keep them unresolved until you need them to break a card, especially for Silver and Gold.
- Do not break cards early (except Conquest). The wiki's beginner guide says to wait until late in the week for most cards, because new opportunities keep appearing. Conquest is the exception: its rituals take at least 2 days.
- Pick your difficulty for your patience level. Maggie's difficulty gives unlimited rewinds. Magician's gives none.
- Death is part of it. The game has 50+ endings, and knowledge carries across lifetimes. Your first few runs are for learning.
- Save Gold Dice for checks you cannot afford to fail.
The Premise in One Paragraph
You are a lowly minister serving a Sultan who has been bewitched by a sorceress. Each week you draw one of four Sultan Cards: Carnality, Extravagance, Conquest, or Bloodshed. You have a limited number of days to "break" it by committing the matching act. Around this core loop you manage allies, wealth, secrets, and influence at court, while ancient gods watch from beyond and offer forbidden power across multiple lifetimes.
Sultan Cards
Type | Theme | Main check | Typical ways to break it
Bloodshed | Taking a life | Combat | Duels (including at the Grand Game), court conflicts with the Vizier Abdul, and as a last resort sacrificing followers ("Cruel Sacrifice")
Carnality | Pleasures of the flesh | Sociability | "Carnality at Home" with a consenting partner such as your wife Maggie, the House of Delights, or court encounters
Extravagance | Reckless spending | Sociability | Paying gold into events such as "Expanding the Estate", renovations, or the "Golden Bird" event (30 gold)
Conquest | Dangerous ventures | Combat | Hunting beasts ("Fierce Lion", "Wounded Rhino") or leading troops into battle
Card tiers
Tier | Flavor text | Check level
Stone | "rough as stone" | 1
Bronze | "hard as bronze" | 2
Silver | "smooth as silver" | 3
Gold | "cold as gold" | 4
You start by drawing one card. Some options let you voluntarily draw more ("go all in"), which gives you more cards to break later. Only do this when your break queue is well stocked.
Attributes
Characters, including you and your followers, have six attributes:
Attribute | Used for
Sociability | Social checks, Carnality and Extravagance events, running businesses
Charisma | Persuasion, influence, winning people over
Combat | Duels, hunts, Bloodshed and Conquest
Physique | Endurance, labor, survival checks
Wisdom | Scholarship, estate management, and a prerequisite for Magic
Magic | Occult rituals and supernatural threats
Raise them by reading books (permanent attribute increases), wearing equipment, and holding feasts. Magic books usually require a certain Wisdom first.
How a Week Plays Out
- Read the card and its deadline.
- Scan the board for rituals and events that can break it at the right tier.
- Assign characters to rituals. Each ritual checks attributes, and the success chance is shown before you commit.
- Run economic rituals in parallel, so gold, intelligence, and support keep flowing.
- Break the card on the best day (usually late, except Conquest).
- Pay your lifestyle upkeep. Magician's difficulty adds extra maintenance costs.
Difficulty Settings
Difficulty | Success rate baseline | Rewinds | Card exchanges | Starting Gold Dice | Deadline
Maggie's | 60% | Unlimited | 3 per week | 1 | 7 days
Hassan's | 50% | 10 at start | 1 per week | 2 | 7 days
Magician's | 33% | None at start | 1 per week | 1 | 5 days, plus maintenance costs
Recommendation: Play Maggie's first to learn the event web, then move to Hassan's for a real challenge. Rewinds let you undo bad results, so on Maggie's you can explore every branch.
Money, Followers, and Influence
Gold
- Starting background: Merchant Family gives extra gold. Money snowballs, and gold solves Extravagance cards directly.
- Managing the Estate gives steady daily coins when staffed with capable followers. Followers with good Wisdom and Sociability do best.
- Other income: "Hunting Game" and "Selling Labor" style events, plus Grand Game intelligence rituals.
Followers
- You may start with three slaves or one Noble Follower. Nobles are stronger in rituals and can generate coin or build support. Slaves give you more bodies.
- Most named characters have storylines that unfold as you get to know them. Storylines can raise a character's Tier and unlock unique opportunities and treasures.
- Character groups: Your Household (your wife Maggie and others), The Court (the Sultan, the Vizier Abdul, the Sultan's favorite Zazie, the political opposition Nawfal), The Sultan's Champions, The House of Delights, and The People.
Support and Opposition
Nobles have an Opposition score against you. Build Support (for example through the "Bookstore Business" ritual) until it beats their Opposition by at least 1. That stops them interfering with your plans at court.
Renown and Infamy
Your reputation stats matter for high-tier options. For example, the Gold-tier "Purifying Fire" route needs 20+ Renown, and the Gold Conquest option "Even You" needs 20+ Infamy. Decide early which way your run is leaning.
The Break Queue: Surviving Silver and Gold
The community's key strategy: do not use permanent, non-expiring events on low-tier cards. Keep them in reserve.
- Stone and Bronze are easy. Events like "News in the Bathhouse", "House Occupied by Vagrants", and "Battle at the Wolves Den" come up often.
- Silver needs semi-random timed events like "Vanity, Vanity" and "The Sultan's Prank", or queueable ones like the "Famous Hamar Brothers" and the House of Delights.
- Gold options are few and need preparation:
- Bloodshed: court duels with Abdul, or questline paths
- Carnality: an upgraded Maggie, Zazie's gifts (30 gold plus equipment), or Arzuna's tier progression
- Conquest: "Even You" (20+ Infamy), questline completions, or "Your Game" in Nabhani's questline
- Extravagance: the "Golden Bird" event and other big-spend events
- The general Gold route "Purifying Fire" needs 20+ Renown
Plan two weeks ahead. When you draw a Silver card, ask where a Gold card would come from if you drew one next.
Rewinds, Gold Dice, and Card Exchanges
- Rewinds undo outcomes. On Hassan's you only have 10 to start, so save them for run-ending failures.
- Gold Dice improve critical checks. Spend them on Gold-tier breaks or storyline-defining rolls.
- Card exchanges let you swap a drawn card, three per week on Maggie's and one per week otherwise. Use them to dodge a Gold card you cannot break.
Collection and Meta Progression
- Fate's Ledger and 1001 Nights are the game's long-term collection and story-tracking systems. Filling them reveals more of the world's secrets across lifetimes.
- Books are both stat items and story hooks. The "Book Hunt" can randomly give crossover books. The August 2026 patch added Helix Waltz crossover content, which you reach through the book "Helix Waltz".
- Endings range from dying a loyal sycophant to becoming a dragon slayer, killing a god, or bringing about the apocalypse. There are 50+ in total.
- After Stories extend some endings, and recent patches keep adjusting their triggers.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Spending your break queue on Stone cards. You will have nothing left when Gold arrives.
- Neglecting income. A broke minister cannot answer Extravagance or fund feasts and gear.
- Letting Opposition grow unchecked. Court enemies derail rituals.
- Breaking Conquest on the last day. Its rituals take 2+ days.
- Sacrificing key followers early. "Cruel Sacrifice" works, but it throws away storylines and tiers.
- Blindly drawing extra cards. "Go all in" is only good when you have the answers ready.
- Wasting rewinds on minor rolls on Hassan's difficulty.
Advanced Tips
- Specialize followers. Make a Combat duelist, a Sociability face, and a Wisdom manager, then send each to their best rituals.
- Chase storylines deliberately. Tier-ups (like Arzuna's) open Gold-tier solutions.
- Balance Renown and Infamy on purpose. Each unlocks different Gold routes.
- Gather Intelligence (for example from bathhouse visits). Intelligence cards unlock rituals and secrets you would otherwise miss.
- Use failed runs as scouting. Knowing which events appear, and when, is the real long-term progression.
- Stay updated. Patches frequently fix event triggers, for example the "Iron Head" event, Samir's storyline, and After Story conditions. If something seems bugged, check that you are on the latest build. The version number is shown in-game.
FAQ
How long do I have to break a Sultan Card? 7 days on Maggie's and Hassan's difficulty, and 5 days on Magician's.
What happens if I fail? You are executed. That triggers the "Is that how you entertain your Sultan?" ending, and you start a new life.
Which difficulty should I choose? Maggie's for your first run (unlimited rewinds, 60% base success rate). Hassan's for a proper challenge. Magician's for veterans.
How do I break Gold cards? Prepare early: a Renown route ("Purifying Fire" at 20+), an Infamy route ("Even You" at 20+), character tier-ups (Maggie, Arzuna, Zazie's gifts), questline events like "Your Game", or large gold spends like "Golden Bird".
How many endings are there? More than 50, according to the developers.
Is the game still being updated? Yes. Double Cross and 2P Games released patch 1.0.19950 on August 13, 2026, following the Helix Waltz crossover patch on August 7.
