A full guide to the original Resident Evil 4 on Steam (the 2014 Ultimate HD release): controls and combat, the Merchant economy, which weapons to buy and upgrade, a chapter-by-chapter outline, bosses, unlockables, and how to make it look and run its best on a modern PC.
Researched September 2026 — current as of Steam version 1.0.6 (the final official patch, April 2014). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.
Which RE4? This guide covers the classic 2005 game, Steam app 254700. The 2023 remake is a separate purchase with different weapons, bosses, and systems.
Quick Start
- Aim for the head or knees, then kick. Shooting a Ganado in the head or leg staggers it; a prompt appears to melee (roundhouse or suplex) for heavy crowd damage without spending ammo.
- You cannot move and shoot. Leon plants his feet to aim. Create distance first, then fire.
- Sell treasure, not ammo. Treasures exist to be sold to the Merchant. Combine gems into treasures with slots (for example, the Elegant Mask and gems) for much higher prices.
- Buy body armor when the Merchant stocks a damage-reducing vest; it pays for itself on harder difficulties.
- Upgrade, don't hoard. A few well-upgraded guns beat carrying everything. The Red9 and Striker are popular backbones.
- Shoot Blue Medallions. A note from the Merchant in Chapter 1 asks you to shoot the 15 blue medallions around the farm and cemetery; do it and he gives you the Punisher pistol for free. Once you leave that area it's gone.
- Use the knife on crates and downed enemies. Ready the knife (hold its button, then slash) to break boxes and finish crawling enemies without spending ammo.
- Tetris your attaché case. Rotating items packs far more into the case; buy case upgrades from the Merchant as soon as you can afford them.
- Protect Ashley. Tell her to wait in safe spots or hide in dumpsters during big fights; if she is carried off or killed, it's game over.
Controls and Settings (PC)
- Aiming Mode: version 1.0.2 added Classic and Modern mouse aiming. Modern feels like a normal PC shooter; Classic mimics the original's calibrated feel. Most keyboard/mouse players pick Modern.
- Controller: full controller support; the game was designed around a pad and QTEs feel natural on one.
- QTE key: the X+C dual-key QTE prompt on keyboard can be remapped by editing usr_input.ini (Documents, My Games, Capcom, RE4) since patch 1.0.6.
- Frame rate: runs at 60 FPS; patch 1.0.2 recalibrated breakable objects, cutscene set pieces, and even an egg-laying exploit that ran at double speed at 60 FPS.
- Color filter: the graphics menu includes four color filters; the fourth (added in 1.0.6) reduces the warm tint.
- Laser color: patch 1.0.6 lets you set the laser sight color with the laserR/laserG/laserB/laserA values in config.ini (same folder). If the values are missing, open the graphics settings once, return to the main menu, and close the game to generate them.
- Anisotropy: also saved in config.ini (0, 2, 4, 8, or 16); lower it only if you're at or below minimum spec.
Core Combat
Enemy types
Enemy | Where | How to handle
Ganados (villagers) | Village | Head/knee shots, then melee; knock them into groups
Zealots (Los Illuminados monks) | Castle | Shielded variants need shotguns or grenades
Soldiers and J.J. (Gatling) | Island | Explosives, shotguns, flash grenades
Plagas (head parasites) | Everywhere | Flash grenades kill exposed Plagas instantly
Chainsaw Ganados/Dr. Salvador | Village | Shotgun at close range, keep moving; a hit can kill instantly
Garradors | Castle | Blind; walk slowly, shoot the exposed Plaga on the back
Regeneradors / Iron Maidens | Island | The Infrared Scope on a rifle reveals the parasites to shoot
Key tricks
- Flash grenades instantly kill exposed Plagas that burst from heads. Save some for the castle and island.
- Incendiary grenades are excellent against groups and Plagas.
- Shotgun crowd control: the Riot Gun and Striker handle crowds in narrow corridors.
- Grabs and QTEs: when an enemy grabs you, mash the prompted keys to break free; other QTEs (boulders, Krauser's knife fight) require pressing the shown keys quickly.
- Dynamic difficulty: the game quietly adjusts enemy aggression and damage based on how well you're doing. If you die a lot, it gets a bit easier.
The Merchant
The Merchant ("What're ya buyin'?") appears at blue torches throughout the game. He sells weapons, upgrades, first aid sprays, body armor, attaché case upgrades, and treasure maps. He also buys treasures and weapons.
Weapon recommendations
Slot | Recommendation | Why
Handgun | Red9 (with stock) or Blacktail; Punisher early | Red9 hits hardest; Blacktail is fast; Punisher pierces multiple enemies
Shotgun | Riot Gun or Striker | Riot Gun has spread and power; Striker has a big magazine
Rifle | Semi-Auto Rifle | Faster follow-up shots; add a scope
Magnum | Broken Butterfly or Killer7 | Boss damage; ammo is scarce
Machine gun | TMP | Useful vs regenerators and fast enemies with a stock
Special | Rocket Launcher | Buy one for difficult bosses if cash allows
Exclusive upgrades: after upgrading most stats, each weapon offers one exclusive upgrade (for example, a big damage or capacity boost). Aim to max one handgun and one shotgun.
Money tips:
- Keep treasures that combine (masks, crowns) until you have the gems.
- Sell unused weapons when upgrading; the Merchant pays back part of the upgrade cost.
- Buy treasure maps in each area; they mark valuables on your map.
Chapter Outline
Resident Evil 4 has five chapters split into sub-chapters, across three main areas. Chapter boundaries below are approximate; the area changes are what matter for planning. Krauser appears twice: a QTE knife-fight cutscene, and later a full boss fight on the island.
Chapter | Area | Highlights
1-1 to 1-3 | Village | Village siege, Dr. Salvador, farm, Del Lago lake boss
2-1 to 2-3 | Village / church | El Gigante, finding Ashley, Bitores Mendez
3-1 to late Chapter 4 | Castle | Salazar's castle, Garradors, armored knights, a short Ashley solo section, Verdugo, and the Salazar boss
End of Chapter 4 to 5-4 | Island | Military base, Regenerators, U-3, the Krauser boss fight, Saddler finale
Boss tips
Boss | Tip
Del Lago | Harpoon it from the boat; steer to avoid ropes and debris
El Gigante | Shoot until the Plaga emerges from its back, then climb up and slash it
Bitores Mendez | Shotgun and Magnum; target the upper body in the second phase from high ground
Verdugo | Use liquid nitrogen tanks to freeze it, then unload; or outlast the elevator timer
Ramon Salazar | Shoot the tentacles to expose Salazar in the creature's head, then unload into him; dodge the swipe attacks
U-3 | Keep moving; shoot the weak spots when it emerges
Jack Krauser | Knife fight QTE first; later a Magnum or Rocket Launcher shortens the fight
Osmund Saddler | Shoot the eyes on its legs, then climb or knife the core; Ada provides a special rocket
Unlockables and Extra Modes
Unlock | How
Professional difficulty | Clear the game on Normal
Separate Ways (Ada) | Clear the main game
Assignment Ada | Clear the main game
The Mercenaries | Clear the main game
Matilda (handgun) | Clear the main game; appears in the Merchant's shop
Infinite Rocket Launcher | Clear the game; buy from the Merchant
Handcannon | Earn 5-star ranks in every Mercenaries stage with every character
Chicago Typewriter | Clear Separate Ways; buy from the Merchant
P.R.L. 412 | Clear the game on Professional
Costumes | New costumes after clearing the game (including Leon's gangster outfit and Ashley's armor)
The Mercenaries is a score-attack mode with Leon, Ada, Krauser, HUNK, and Wesker across several maps. Kill chains extend the timer. It is the main source of replay value for many fans.
Collectibles and Missables
- Blue Medallions: 15 at the farm and cemetery in Chapter 1. It's the only medallion hunt in the original game (the repeatable Merchant requests are a 2023 remake feature); complete it early for the free Punisher.
- Treasures: many are missable once you leave an area; treasure maps help.
- Save at typewriters often, especially before bosses.
Mods and PC Fixes
- re4_tweaks is a community fix pack that addresses many PC-specific bugs and adds options (including FOV and frame fixes).
- RE4 HD Project is a massive fan remaster of textures, models, lighting, and effects, built for this Steam PC release. Version 1.1, released on 26 July 2022, is considered final; it bundles re4_tweaks and its installer checks for newer re4_tweaks versions. The download is about 34 GB and needs roughly 38 GB of disk space.
- Windows support: Capcom removed Windows XP, Vista, and 7 from the officially supported OS list in April 2022.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Hoarding treasures you could combine, then selling them cheap.
- Buying every gun. Money is limited; focus upgrades.
- Wasting magnum ammo on regular enemies.
- Forgetting flash grenades against Plagas.
- Letting Ashley roam during fights.
- Skipping the Merchant's body armor.
- Ignoring the knife for crates and downed enemies.
Advanced Tips
- Crowd suplex: a stagger followed by melee knocks down nearby enemies too.
- Crouch-dodges: some attacks prompt a dodge button; watch for the on-screen prompt.
- Shoot dynamite held by enemies to blow up groups.
- Regenerators: equip the Infrared Scope on a rifle to reveal the parasites; kill each one to finish them.
- Professional mode: enemies hit much harder and dynamic difficulty is locked high. Upgrade the Riot Gun or Striker and keep a Rocket Launcher for Krauser and Saddler.
- Speedrun trick: most bosses can be shortened dramatically with a Rocket Launcher.
