Everything a new or returning Siege player needs to climb: fundamentals, operator picks for the current season, attacking and defending plans, ranked, settings, and the mistakes that lose rounds.

Researched September 2026 — current as of Year 11 Season 3 (Operation Split Fire, launched September 1, 2026). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Quick Start

  • Siege is an information game first and a shooting game second. Winning teams drone, watch cameras, and call out. Losing teams run in blind.
  • Always drone before you push on attack. Your drone is your most valuable prep-phase tool; spend the whole prep phase scouting the site and hiding the drone somewhere useful.
  • Reinforce the right walls on defense. Unreinforced walls are free entry points for attackers. Ask your team where the site is and reinforce the walls and hatches that touch it.
  • Learn three maps deeply before learning all of them. Know the bomb sites, the hatches, the breakable walls, and the camera locations on each.
  • Pick simple operators first. Ash, Sledge, Thermite and Thatcher on attack; Rook, Mute, Kapkan, Smoke and Jäger on defense teach you the core jobs.
  • Lean (Q/E by default on PC) to reduce your hitbox when peeking corners. Crouch-peeking and changing your angle beats standing in doorways.
  • Every death is information for the enemy. Don't trade yourself for nothing in the first 30 seconds of a round.
  • Headshots kill regardless of armor for almost every weapon. Keep your crosshair at head height, always.
  • Play Quick Match and Unranked to learn, then Ranked once you know the maps. Low-clearance-level players get some new-player assists in Quick Match; check the season notes for the current details.
  • Turn on voice or at least use pings. A "one on stairs" ping wins more rounds than a perfect flick.

How a Round Works

Phase | What happens | Your job

Operator ban | Each side bans operators (Ranked/Unranked) | Ban what counters your team or what you hate facing

Operator pick | Pick your operator and loadout | Fill a role your team is missing

Preparation (drone phase) | Attackers drone; defenders reinforce and place gadgets | Attack: find the site and the defenders. Defense: build the site and kill drones

Action phase | Attackers breach and push; defenders hold | Trade kills, protect utility, plant or deny the defuser

Post-plant | Defuser planted; defenders must stop it | Attack: play off the defuser. Defense: deny it with utility or retake

Game modes in the rotation: Bomb is the ranked/competitive mode (attackers plant a defuser on one of two sites). Quick Match rotates Bomb, Secure Area and Hostage. Limited-time events come and go: in Y11S3, 3v3 Arcade ran September 8–21 and the Wasteland Circuit drone-racing event runs September 23–October 13, 2026.

Siege X: What Changed From Classic Siege

Siege X relaunched the game in 2025 with free access for the base experience. Key systemic changes you will notice:

  • More environmental destruction and interaction: fire extinguishers and gas pipes react to damage, and rappel ropes can be cut.
  • Reworked audio, making it easier to place footsteps by floor and direction.
  • Reputation system that tracks behavior; toxic or team-killing players are penalized, and good reputation is now a requirement for some modes (see Legend Division below).
  • Free access: new players can try the game without buying it. Ranked has extra access requirements (clearance level and ownership), so check the in-game Ranked tab for the current rules.

Operator Roles

Every team needs a few jobs covered. You don't need all of them every round, but missing hard breach or anti-gadget usually means losing.

Attack roles

Role | What it does | Core picks

Hard breach | Opens reinforced walls and hatches | Thermite, Hibana, Ace, Maverick

Anti-gadget / hard-breach support | Removes Mute jammers, Bandit/Kaid electrics, Jäger ADS | Thatcher, Twitch, Kali, IQ (detection)

Intel / droning | Finds defenders and roamers | Lion, Dokkaebi, Zero, Solid Snake, Jackal, Nomad (flank watch)

Entry / frag | Takes space and first kills | Ash, Zofia, Iana, Sledge

Support / plant | Smokes, flashes, planting | Capitão, Glaz, Ying, Blackbeard

Defense roles

Role | What it does | Core picks

Anchor | Holds the site all round | Rook, Doc, Smoke, Mira, Echo

Anti-breach | Stops hard breachers | Mute, Kaid, Bandit, Azami (building cover)

Anti-grenade / anti-projectile | Eats nades and projectiles | Jäger, Wamai

Roamer | Plays away from site to waste attacker time | Vigil, Caveira, Oryx, Denari, Fenrir

Trapper / intel | Denies entry or reveals pushes | Kapkan, Lesion, Melusi, Valkyrie, Maestro

Y11S3 meta snapshot

These are the operators community tier lists rank highest this season:

  • Attack: Ace (the most self-sufficient hard breacher since he doesn't care about electrics), Thatcher (EMPs stay valuable and he's a common ban), Maverick (torch ignores electronic denial), Lion (buffed with shorter scan warnings), Nomad, and Solid Snake (the Metal Gear collab attacker added in Y11S1 Operation Silent Hunt).
  • Defense: Azami, Kaid, Mute, Smoke, Jäger, Mira, Fenrir and Denari.
  • Nerfed this season: Dokkaebi's call signal now needs a constant connection, and she lost Impact EMPs for Breach Charges. The SMG-12 (on Vigil and Dokkaebi) took a big cut (damage 28 to 16, magazine 32 to 22).
  • Adjusted/buffed: Kali's CSRX 300 swapped its 5x/12x scopes for 3.5x/8x but gained reserve ammo (36 to 51); Kapkan's trap damage went up slightly (60 to 62); Echo's Sonic Burst refill dropped from 16 to 15 seconds; Lion's scan warning dropped from 1.5 to 1.4 seconds.

Tier lists shift with every mid-season patch; treat these as a starting point, not a rule.

New This Season: Noor and Villa

Noor (Defender, 2 speed / 2 health) carries the Horus Lance Launcher with five projectiles. A lance pierces a ballistic shield or a destructible surface and creates fire on the far side. That means floors, ceilings, soft walls and hatches all become lines of attack.

  • Loadout: Commando 9 or ALDA 5.56; 1911 TACOPS or Bailiff 410; Deployable Shield or Barbed Wire.
  • Best use: fire lances through the floor or wall the attackers are stacked behind, especially shield pushes and planters. It is area denial: the goal is to force them to move into your crosshair.
  • Access: early access via the Premium Battle Pass (1,200 R6 Credits). The standalone Renown price after early access hadn't been confirmed at time of writing.

Villa rework: the Living Room/Library site moved to the basement, the garage is now interior space with better flow and drone paths, and several visual areas were modernized. If you learned old Villa, relearn it before playing it in Ranked.

Attacking Plan

  • Prep phase: drive your drone into the building, find the objective, and identify defenders' operators (listen for Mute jammers, spot Maestro Evil Eyes). Hide the drone on a high shelf or behind objects near site.
  • Clear utility: kill cameras outside and on the way in. Every camera you shoot is less info for defense.
  • Take map control from the outside in. Secure a floor or a side of the building before you commit to site.
  • Hard breach in order: Thatcher/Twitch/Kali/Maverick clear or bypass the electrics; then Thermite/Hibana/Ace opens the wall. Breachers should not be the first to swing.
  • Watch flank: someone should hold the roamer path or use Nomad Airjabs / Gonne-6s where applicable.
  • Plant for time: don't wait until 0:20 on the clock. Plant in a spot your team can cross-fire, then play the defuser from angles, not on top of it.

Trade rule: push in pairs. If your teammate dies, you should be positioned to kill whoever killed them immediately.

Defending Plan

  • Reinforce the walls and hatches around site first, then the walls that give attackers easy vertical play.
  • Place utility where it counters the attackers you see: Mute jammers on the walls they'll hard breach, Jäger ADS covering throwable entry points, Kaid claws on reinforced walls.
  • Kill drones. Every drone you shoot in prep is a drone they can't use later.
  • Use rotation holes (melee or shotgun holes) so your team can move between rooms without dying on doorways.
  • Roamers: waste attacker time. Get a kill or two early, then get out before you're traded. Don't roam if you don't know the map.
  • Anchors: stay alive until late in the round and deny the plant. A single anchor alive with utility at 0:30 wins a lot of rounds.

Ranked

Siege uses the Ranked 2.0 structure: a hidden MMR drives who you're matched against, and you climb visible ranks with Rank Points.

Rank ladder: Copper, Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Emerald, Diamond, Champion.

  • Legend Division (new mid-Y11S3): a ranked playlist for top Champion players, opening mid-season. Expect extra entry requirements beyond rank (account and PC-security checks have been reported); confirm the final list in Ubisoft's announcement when it opens.
  • Map pool: Ranked uses a curated rotation (it includes staples like Bank, Border, Chalet, Clubhouse, Consulate, Kafe Dostoyevsky, Oregon, Villa and newer maps like Nighthaven Labs and Calypso Casino). Ubisoft adjusts it most seasons, so check the season notes.
  • Operator bans matter: agree on bans with your team before the timer runs out. Common attack bans: Azami, Mira, Kaid. Common defense bans: Thatcher, Ace, Nomad.

Settings That Matter

Setting | Recommendation

Field of view | High enough to see peripherals; many players use the upper range

Aim down sight sensitivity | Tune so your 1x/red dot feels the same as hip-fire

Ping / markers | Bind ping to an easy key and use it constantly

Brightness | Raise it until dark corners are readable; don't blow out windows

Graphics | Prioritize stable FPS over visuals; shadows and effects low is common

Audio | Use headphones; the Siege X audio rework rewards it heavily

Attachments: use a 1x–1.5x optic on most guns, a compensator or flash hider for vertical recoil control, and a vertical grip if available. Don't overthink it early.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Going in without droning. It's the number-one reason new players die first.
  • Standing still in a doorway. Doorways are pre-aimed. Walk past them, jiggle-peek, or make your own hole.
  • Reinforcing random walls. Reinforcements belong on site walls and key hatches, not a far-off hallway.
  • Leaving your gadgets in your pocket. Unused utility is wasted potential. Place it every round.
  • Roaming with no plan. Roaming because you're bored leaves your anchors 3v5.
  • Ignoring the timer. Attack loses by running out of time far more often than you'd think.
  • Chasing kills post-plant. Once the defuser is down, play time and angles.

Advanced Tips

  • Vertical play: open floors above the site (Sledge, Buck) and shoot defenders from above. As defender, destroy hatches and floors to create your own vertical angles.
  • Pre-fire common spots you know defenders hold, especially headglitches on maps you've learned.
  • Clear defensive utility before swinging: a single Thatcher EMP or Twitch drone can decide the round.
  • Mix up setups: if you always anchor the same corner, good teams will pre-fire it by round three.
  • Sound whoring: crouch-walk to reduce noise and listen for rappels, footsteps above you, and drones.
  • Use Noor's lances against shields and planters in the final seconds of a round to force movement.
  • Review your deaths in the replay and ask one question: "What information did I not have?"
