A practical guide to RaceRoom Racing Experience in 2026: how the free-to-play store works, what to buy first, how to set up a wheel or pad, how Ranked Multiplayer and Time Attack work, and how to get faster and safer on track.

Researched September 2026 — current as of client version 0.9.8.25 (patch of September 11, 2026), after the Summer Update and the August 18, 2026 HUD and GT3 physics patch. Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Quick Start

  • RaceRoom is free to download. You get free cars and tracks, plus a Weekly Free Combo — a new free car-and-track pair every week, usable in all modes including multiplayer and Time Attack.
  • Test drive before you buy. Any car can be test-driven from its store page on any track you own. Use it before spending.
  • Content is bought with vRP (Virtual RacePoints), the in-game currency. Buy vRP, then buy individual cars, tracks, or packs.
  • Pick the right driving mode: Novice, Amateur, or Get Real. Novice and Amateur add assists; Get Real is full simulation.
  • Start in one class. GT3 appears in Ranked and Time Attack almost every week and is a safe first purchase; DTM 2026 is the class the official esports events currently use.
  • Race clean in Ranked. Ranked uses a pace rating and a safety/reputation score; crashing into people hurts you more than being slow.
  • Check the Ranked schedule weekly. Sprint, Feature, and Weekly races rotate every week (Week 39 of 2026 is live as of this writing).
  • Chase Time Attack leaderboards to learn tracks. Competitions rotate on a two-week cycle.

How the Store and vRP Work

Item | What it gets you | Tip

Free content | A starter set of cars and tracks | Enough to try physics and Ranked in free combos

Weekly Free Combo | A new free car + track each week | Great way to try a class before buying

Individual cars | One car | Test drive first

Tracks | One circuit (with layouts) | Buy tracks that appear in Ranked often

Car packs / class packs | A whole class | Better value if you'll race that class

Series/season bundles (e.g., DTM content) | Series-themed bundles | Good for DTM fans; check exact contents in the in-game store before buying

Buying order for a new player:

  • Stick to free content and the Weekly Free Combo for the first week.
  • Pick one class (GT3 is the safest bet) and buy a couple of cars from it.
  • Add tracks that show up in Ranked repeatedly.
  • Expand into DTM, touring cars, or prototypes once you know what you like.

2026 Updates You Should Know About

  • Summer Update (August 4, 2026): added four new GT3 cars and more content, plus a new HUD, a sequential stick shifter gearbox option, and the start of the GT3 aero/ride-height rework.
  • August 18, 2026 patch: reduced the new HUD's performance cost and added the most-requested HUD features; continued a GT3 rework of how pitch, ride height, drag, and aero balance interact, with individual passes on the Ford Mustang FR500 GT3, McLaren MP4-12C GT3, RUF GT3 and Mercedes SLS GT3. Cars that got recalculated chassis/aero feel different on entry and mid-corner — do a few laps before reusing old setups.
  • Free track upgrades: Norisring and Silverstone were brought to 2026 spec (Norisring got new road markings, higher-resolution tarmac textures and a new paddock building; Silverstone added the hotel cabins near Maggotts).
  • Sequential shifter fix (August 18): the stick shifter had been stricter than the real thing; with a manual clutch you now only need the clutch to pull away, not between shifts, and you no longer have to hold the brake or lift off the throttle to shift.
  • September 11, 2026 patch (0.9.8.25): new sounds recorded at the Sachsenring DTM test days for the Aston Martin Vantage AMR GT3 EVO DTM, Ford Mustang GT3 EVO DTM and Lamborghini Temerario GT3 DTM, plus new sounds for the BMW M3 GT2 (2012) and the Carlsson SLK 340 JUDD.

Driving Modes

Mode | Who it's for | What changes

Novice | Pad players and total beginners | Heavy assists, easier handling

Amateur | Learning players | Some assists, closer to real handling

Get Real | Wheel users and experienced players | Full simulation, no forced assists

Ranked and competitive events may restrict assists; check the server rules.

Controller, Wheel, and View Setup

  • Wheel: RaceRoom supports most wheels. Check steering rotation in both your wheel software and the in-game Controls so the on-screen wheel matches yours, calibrate pedals, then tune force feedback in Controls.
  • FFB: start with moderate strength and avoid clipping (the signal maxing out); reduce overall strength if the wheel goes numb in high-load corners.
  • Gamepad: use Novice or Amateur at first, increase steering deadzone slightly, and lower steering sensitivity for smooth inputs.
  • Keyboard: possible, but you'll be much faster on a pad or wheel.
  • Field of view: use the built-in FOV calculator with your screen size and distance for a realistic view. Wrong FOV makes judging speed and braking points harder.
  • VR and triple screens: both are supported natively, including true triple-screen projection.

Ranked Multiplayer

  • Structure: scheduled sessions, sprint races, feature races, weekly races, and endurance-style events.
  • Ratings: your Rating reflects pace/results; your Reputation reflects clean driving. Some servers require minimum values, so keeping Reputation high opens more races.
  • Weekly schedule: check the in-game Ranked Multiplayer menu for layouts, formats, and start times. Recent weeks featured DTM 2026 at Assen, Adria and Spa, Super Touring at Hungaroring, Formula 4 at Zhuhai, GT4 at MotorLand Aragon, GT3 and DTM 2026 at the Nordschleife, WTCC at Valerbanen, and multiclass LMDH plus GT3 at Indianapolis.
  • Race etiquette: don't dive-bomb, leave space on corner exits, and let faster classes through predictably in multiclass.

First Ranked race checklist

  • Practice the combo offline for 20 or more laps.
  • Run a consistent pace rather than a single hot lap.
  • Qualify cleanly.
  • Survive lap 1 — most incidents happen in the first corner.
  • Finish. Consistency climbs Rating faster than risky overtakes.

Time Attack and Competitions

  • Time Attack rotations arrive on a two-week cycle.
  • Global leaderboards and ghosts let you compare laps against the fastest drivers.
  • Official competitions are announced in the weekly "This Week in RaceRoom" Steam posts. The current one is the DTM Esports Community Cup 2026: four Thursday rounds in DTM 2026 cars (Spa GP September 10, Adria Full Circuit 2003 September 17, Assen GP September 24, and the finale at Estoril GP on October 1, 2026), each a 60-minute race with fixed setups and one mandatory four-tyre pit stop. Prizes include DTM tickets for the Hockenheim finale, merchandise, and vRP.
  • DTM Esports Championship 2026: the pro-level series finished in August with Tim Jarschel (Falken Simracing Team) crowned champion at the on-site Nürburgring final.
  • Beat the Pro events invite you to beat a real driver's lap time; the latest, at Sachsenring against DTM driver Jules Gounon, closed on September 9.
  • FIA Esports European Hill Climb Cup: online qualification in RaceRoom (free car and hill climb course, no purchase needed) closed September 7; the top eight go to an on-site final in Luxembourg on October 9 to 11, 2026.

Getting Faster: Driving Fundamentals

  • Brake in a straight line, then trail the brake gently into the corner.
  • Look ahead to the apex and exit, not at the car in front.
  • Smooth inputs: sudden steering or throttle upsets the car, especially on cold tyres.
  • Consistency first: 10 laps within a few tenths beats one fast lap and nine mistakes.
  • Use a ghost in Time Attack and compare braking points.
  • Tyre and fuel: in longer races, manage tyre temps and fuel; overdriving early leaves you slow later.
  • Setup: start with default setups; adjust brake bias and wing only after you're consistent.

Car Classes to Try

Class | Why try it

GT3 | Most popular, great for Ranked and Time Attack; currently being physics-reworked

DTM 2026 | Current DTM machinery; featured in 2026 esports and Ranked

GT4 | Slower and forgiving; ideal for learning racecraft

Touring cars (WTCC, WTCR, Super Touring) | Close racing, lots of contact-free battles if you're careful

Formula (F4, F3) | Precise and fast; learn braking points

Prototypes and Hypercars (LMDH) | High downforce, multiclass practice

Hill Climb | Special courses; recently used for FIA esports qualification

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Buying before test driving. Always test drive first.
  • Using old setups after the GT3 rework. Cars feel different now; rebuild setups.
  • Wrong FOV. It ruins braking judgement.
  • Racing aggressively in Ranked. Reputation matters more than one position.
  • Overspending on random cars. Focus on one class at a time.
  • Skipping the Weekly Free Combo. It's free practice with the week's featured content.

Advanced Tips

  • Trail braking is essential in GT3 and DTM; practice modulating brake release.
  • Brake bias adjustments help with lock-ups or understeer on entry.
  • Tyre warmup: give tyres a lap to come in before pushing.
  • Use telemetry (via third-party tools) to compare laps and find time.
  • In multiclass, stay predictable when faster cars approach; hold your line.
  • Watch esports replays to learn racing lines for current DTM tracks.
