A full guide to Killing Floor 2's perks, weapons, zeds, bosses, dosh economy, and team play, from your first Normal match up to Hell on Earth.

Researched September 2026 — current as of game version 1150 (February 2024 hotfix; the last content update was the Autumn 2023 update). Tripwire now runs periodic 2XP weekends and sales (most recently Summer 2026). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Status note: Killing Floor 2 is still online and playable, with servers, the item store, and seasonal double-XP events. Tripwire's development focus moved to Killing Floor 3, which released on 24 July 2025. KF2's last major content update was the Autumn 2023 update (26 September 2023), followed by the Winter 2024 quality-of-life update (version 1149, 24 January 2024) and the 1150 hotfix (16 February 2024).

Quick Start

  • Pick a perk and level it. Perks gain XP from kills with that perk's weapons. Early on, Commando, Support, and Field Medic are the most forgiving.
  • Visit the trader between every wave. The arrow on your HUD points to the open trader pod; you have limited time.
  • Buy armor and ammo before new guns. Dying with a fancy gun and no armor is the number one new player loss.
  • Headshots matter. Decapitated zeds die or stop attacking; heads take extra damage for most weapons.
  • Never shoot a Fleshpound with weak weapons. Chip damage enrages it. Call it out and let the team focus it.
  • Stay with your team. Most wipes start when one player wanders off and gets surrounded.
  • Play the weekly Outbreak. It rotates weekly and gives a reward for completion.
  • Use the double-XP windows. Tripwire runs them during seasonal sales (for example, 25 June to 9 July 2026).

Perks

Each perk levels to 25, choosing one of two skills at levels 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25. At level 25 you can Prestige (reset for cosmetic rewards and small XP bonuses). Perk passive bonuses scale with level.

Perk | Role | Signature weapons

Berserker | Melee tank, damage resistance, parries | Zweihander, Pulverizer, Eviscerator, Battle Axe

Commando | All-rounder, spots cloaked Stalkers, extends Zed Time | AR-15, Bullpup, AK-12, SCAR-H, Stoner 63A

Support | Shotguns, welding, resupplying ammo, penetration | MB500, M4 Combat Shotgun, AA-12

Field Medic | Healing darts, team buffs | HMTech-101 pistol, 201 SMG, 301 shotgun, 401 assault rifle

Demolitionist | Explosives, stun large zeds | HX25, M79, RPG-7, C4, Seeker Six

Firebug | Fire and panic crowd control | Caulk n' Burn, Flamethrower, Microwave Gun, Dragonsbreath

Gunslinger | Pistols and revolvers, headshot chains | 1858 Revolver, Deagle, .500 Magnum, AF2011

Sharpshooter | Precision headshots, large zed killer | Winchester 1894, Crossbow, M14 EBR, Railgun, M99

SWAT | SMGs, armor, stumble crowds | MP7, MP5RAS, P90, Kriss

Survivalist | Generalist that uses any perk's weapons | Anything; best when filling gaps

Beginner perk tips

  • Commando: Fire in controlled bursts at heads. The Stalker spotting helps the whole team.
  • Support: Weld doors to funnel zeds, and toss ammo to teammates. Shotguns penetrate crowds.
  • Field Medic: Heal teammates with the dart (it's usually on the secondary fire of Medic weapons). Healing earns XP and dosh.
  • Berserker: Block and parry large zeds. You will be in the front; buy armor every wave.
  • Sharpshooter/Demolitionist: Your job is Scrakes and Fleshpounds. Save your ammo for them.

Difficulties and Game Lengths

Difficulty | What changes

Normal | Learning difficulty

Hard | More zed health and damage; mistakes cost you

Suicidal | Zeds faster and more aggressive; team play required

Hell on Earth | Highest; large zeds rage easily and mistakes are lethal

Game lengths are Short (4 waves), Medium (7 waves), and Long (10 waves), followed by a boss wave.

Game Modes

  • Survival: The core mode. Survive waves, then kill the boss.
  • Weekly Outbreak: A rotating ruleset (e.g., only headshots count, tiny zeds, boss rushes). Completing it grants the weekly reward.
  • Endless: Waves continue indefinitely with scaling difficulty and special outbreak waves.
  • Objective: Map-specific goals such as holding zones or escorting.
  • Versus Survival: 12-player PvP where teams alternate between humans and zeds.

The Zeds

Zed | Threat | How to handle

Clot / Alpha Clot / Cyst | Grabs and holds you | Kill fast, headshot

Slasher | Fast melee | Shoot while backing up

Crawler | Low, fast, often from vents | Look down; shotguns and fire

Stalker | Cloaked | Commando spots them; listen for giggling

Gorefast / Gorefiend | Charging blade arms | Headshots; Gorefiend blocks

Bloat | Vomits bile | Kill at range; bile damages and blinds

Siren | Scream destroys projectiles and damages | Priority target; kill before grenades are wasted

Husk | Fireballs and suicide blast | Shoot the gun arm or head

E.D.A.R. (Trapper, Blaster, Bomber) | Robotic ranged units | Target the head/weak point

Scrake | Chainsaw, rages at low health | Stun with explosives or big headshots, then burst

Quarter Pound | Mini Fleshpound | Treat like a Fleshpound, lower HP

Fleshpound | Enrages when damaged or when it hits | Burst it down all at once; call it out

Bosses

Boss | Key tips

Dr. Hans Volter | Shields himself and drains health when low; spread out and hit his head with burst damage

Patriarch | Cloaks to heal and fires rockets and minigun; watch for his tentacle grab

King Fleshpound | Rages and uses a chest beam; kite around cover and focus when he's charging

Abomination | Spawns Abomination Spawn and gains armor; kill spawn and shoot weak points

Matriarch | Armored robot with plasma cannon and lightning; strip armor pieces, then hit her exposed body

Economy: Dosh

  • Dosh is earned per kill and per wave survived, split across the team.
  • Buy order each trader visit: armor (to full), ammo, grenades, then an upgrade or new weapon.
  • Sell weapons you don't use for a portion of their value (not the full price).
  • Toss dosh to struggling teammates; bind the "Toss Dosh" key in settings if it's not already.
  • Weapons can be upgraded at the trader for extra damage, at an increasing cost and weight.
  • Weight capacity limits your loadout; each weapon lists its weight.

Positioning and Team Play

  • Hold a room with one or two entrances. Corners and welded doors limit how many zeds reach you at once.
  • Clear small zeds, then focus large ones. Assign Sharpshooter/Demo to Scrakes and Fleshpounds.
  • Don't wake Scrakes early. A Scrake at low health rages; only damage it when you can finish it.
  • Use Zed Time. When the game slows down, line up headshots; Commando skills extend it.
  • Heal others. Even non-Medics carry a Medic syringe; heal teammates to earn dosh and keep them alive.

Maps Worth Learning

Classic public favorites include Burning Paris, Outpost, Biotics Lab, Evacuation Point, Black Forest, Farmhouse, Prison, Nuked, and Hellmark Station. Learn one kiting route and one holding spot per map. The Autumn 2023 update added Castle Volter, a fortress that turns out to be Hans Volter's personal clone laboratory.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Skipping armor. Always refill before buying anything else.
  • Shooting Fleshpounds or Scrakes with small arms. You'll enrage them and wipe the team.
  • Running off alone. Solo players get cornered and eaten.
  • Hoarding dosh. Dosh is worthless if you die; buy your key weapon upgrade early.
  • Welding every door without checking the team plan. Welded doors can trap teammates.
  • Wasting grenades on Clots. Save them for Scrakes and Fleshpounds, and kill nearby Sirens first because their scream destroys projectiles.

Advanced Tips

  • Learn the "skip" skills per difficulty. At Hell on Earth, choose skills that help you stun or burst large zeds reliably.
  • Medic grenades and darts give teammates damage and speed buffs depending on skill choices.
  • Ranged big-zed killers should hang back and watch doors, not the swarm.
  • Stagger large zeds with Berserker heavy attacks, Demolitionist explosives, or Sharpshooter headshots to create safe windows.
  • Endless mode is the best place to practice large-zed control and high-difficulty positioning.
  • Double-XP events (usually two weeks around Steam seasonal sales) are the fastest way to level new perks; queue a Long game on Hard.

FAQ

Is Killing Floor 2 still being updated? It still receives maintenance, sales, and 2XP events, but no major content updates since the Autumn 2023 update. Killing Floor 3 launched on 24 July 2025.

Should I buy KF2 or KF3? KF2 is cheap on sale and has a huge back catalog of maps and weapons. KF3 is the actively developed sequel.

What's the best beginner perk? Commando or Support. Both are simple to play and useful to any team.

How do I level perks fast? Play on harder difficulties with a competent team, play during 2XP events, and complete the Weekly Outbreak.

Does KF2 have solo play? Yes. Solo scales the zed count down but you have to handle every large zed yourself.

What is Prestige? At perk level 25 you can reset a perk for cosmetic rewards and a small XP boost for re-levelling.
