Everything a new or returning Hearthstone player needs: modes, deckbuilding, economy, Ranked and Battlegrounds fundamentals, and what is happening in the game right now ahead of the Reign of the Black Empire expansion.

Researched September 2026 — current as of Patch 36.6 / 36.6.1 (Year of the Scarab, pre–Reign of the Black Empire). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Quick Start

  • Play the modes you enjoy, not the one you "should." Standard, Wild, Twist, Arena, Battlegrounds, and Tavern Brawl all feed the same Rewards Track XP via quests, so there is no penalty for switching.
  • Do your daily and weekly quests. They are the main source of Rewards Track XP, which is where most free gold, packs, and cards come from. You can reroll one quest per day.
  • Don't craft early with your dust. Wait until you know which class and archetype you want; crafting a Legendary costs 1,600 dust and disenchanting gets only 400 back.
  • Copy a proven deck. Netdecking from sites like HSReplay or Vicious Syndicate is normal and is the fastest way to learn what "good" looks like. Deck codes paste straight into the collection screen.
  • Mulligan aggressively for your early curve. Keep 1- to 3-mana plays; throw back expensive cards unless your deck specifically needs them.
  • Count lethal every turn — yours and your opponent's. Most games are lost by not noticing a lethal, not by bad draws.
  • Grab this month's free stuff. As of Patch 36.6, logging in grants a free M.O.T.H.E.R. Legendary (one per account), and a Legendary Quest Chain (Sept 29 – Oct 20) awards Reign of the Black Empire packs.
  • Battlegrounds is free and doesn't need a collection. If you are new and card-poor, it is the fairest mode to jump into.

What Is Happening Right Now (Late September 2026)

Item | Dates | What it is

Patch 36.6 | Live Sept 15 | Countdown to the next expansion, Black Market, bug fixes (no card balance changes)

Black Market | Sept 15 – Oct 13 | Earn Bloodstones in Ranked, spend on packs, cards, and cosmetics at shifting prices

Battlegrounds 36.6.1 | Live Sept 22 | New minion type Aberrations; Naga temporarily rotated out

Legendary Quest Chain | Sept 29 – Oct 20 | Quest chain that rewards two free Reign packs

War of Old & New event | Oct 6 – 20 | Event quests with early Reign card rewards

Reign of the Black Empire | Oct 20, 2026 | 135-card expansion; the four Old Gods return as neutral Legendaries; new Assemble keyword

Monk class | March 2027 | 12th class, represented by Chen Stormstout (announced at BlizzCon 2026)

Black Market tips: Bloodstones stop being earnable on October 6, but you can keep spending (and haggle) until October 13. Bloodstones do not carry over to future Black Market events, so spend them all. The widely recommended priority is the Reign of the Black Empire packs first, cosmetics second.

Pre-purchase note: Blizzard is selling bundles covering the next three expansions; buying all three grants a "Way of the Monk" Coin as an early Monk teaser.

Game Modes

Mode | Collection needed? | Best for

Standard | Yes | The main competitive format, using only recent sets

Wild | Yes | Every card ever released; high power, fast games

Twist | Partly | A rotating format with special rules/card pools that changes each season

Arena | No (costs an entry) | Draft a deck from random choices; rewards scale with wins. Excellent for learning card evaluation

Battlegrounds | No | 8-player auto-battler; free to play, optional paid track

Tavern Brawl | Varies | Weekly rule-bending brawl; the first win of the week has historically given a pack

Casual | Yes | Test decks without rank pressure

Solo Adventures | No | Practice vs AI, class tutorials, and bonus content

Current Standard sets (Year of the Scarab)

Until Reign of the Black Empire launches on October 20, Standard contains:

  • Core set and the Event set
  • Into the Emerald Dream (March 2025)
  • The Lost City of Un'Goro (July 2025)
  • Across the Timeways (November 2025)
  • CATACLYSM (March 2026)
  • Escape from Violet Hold (July 2026)

Standard rotates once per year, when the first expansion of the new year releases (expected with the March 2027 expansion that also brings the Monk). When that happens, the Year of the Raptor sets (Emerald Dream, Un'Goro, Timeways) will move to Wild. Be careful spending dust on Year of the Raptor cards now unless you play Wild — they have roughly six months of Standard life left.

Core Mechanics

Turns and mana

  • You gain one empty Mana Crystal per turn, up to 10. The player going second gets The Coin, a 0-cost spell that gives one temporary mana.
  • Hand limit is 10; drawing an 11th card burns it. Board limit is 7 minions.
  • Running out of cards causes Fatigue: each draw from an empty deck deals increasing damage.

Keywords you will see constantly

Keyword | Meaning

Battlecry | Triggers when played from hand

Deathrattle | Triggers when the minion dies

Taunt | Enemies must attack this first

Divine Shield | Blocks the first instance of damage

Rush / Charge | Can attack minions / anything the turn it is played

Lifesteal | Damage dealt heals your hero

Discover | Choose one of three cards

Combo, Overload, Spell Damage, Poisonous, Reborn, Stealth | Class and utility mechanics you learn fast by hovering them

New Reign of the Black Empire mechanics (from Oct 20): Assemble, a keyword for building a custom minion, and an Old God mechanic tied to the four returning Old God Legendaries. Read the full card reveals before crafting.

The 11 classes (Monk joins in 2027)

Death Knight, Demon Hunter, Druid, Hunter, Mage, Paladin, Priest, Rogue, Shaman, Warlock, Warrior. Each has a unique Hero Power (2 mana) and class cards. Death Knight uses a Rune system (Blood, Frost, Unholy) that limits which class cards a deck can include.

Deck archetypes

Archetype | Plan | Typical tells

Aggro | Kill by turn 5–7 with cheap minions and burn | Lots of 1–2 drops, low curve

Midrange | Win the board, then out-value | Efficient 3–5 drops, strong swing turns

Control | Survive, remove everything, win late | Removal, healing, big late-game threats

Combo | Assemble specific cards for a big finishing turn | Card draw, stalling, a known "OTK" payoff

Tempo | Take board efficiently and keep pressure | Cheap stat-efficient minions plus cheap removal

Knowing which role you have in a given matchup ("who's the beatdown?") is the single most important strategic skill. Against aggro, even a greedy deck plays the control role.

Economy: Gold, Dust, and Packs

Resource | How you get it | What to spend it on

Gold | Rewards Track, quests, achievements | Packs (100 gold each), Arena entries, Battlegrounds or Tavern Brawl entries where applicable

Arcane Dust | Disenchanting cards, packs of duplicates, rewards | Crafting specific cards

Rewards Track XP | Daily/weekly quests, event quests | Levels on the Rewards Track (free and paid Tavern Pass tracks)

Event currencies (e.g. Bloodstones) | Limited-time events | Spend fully before the event ends

Crafting costs (normal cards)

Rarity | Craft | Disenchant

Common | 40 | 5

Rare | 100 | 20

Epic | 400 | 100

Legendary | 1,600 | 400

Golden versions cost more to craft and disenchant for more.

F2P spending rules of thumb

  • Buy packs of the newest expansion, not old ones. Duplicate protection means the first Legendaries you open in a set are always new.
  • Open expansion packs before crafting — you may open the card you were about to craft.
  • Craft Legendaries that fit several decks first (neutral or class cards that appear in multiple archetypes).
  • Disenchant cards that rotated and you won't play in Wild, but never disenchant a whole class you might return to.
  • Arena is a solid gold sink if you average several wins; if you consistently go 0–3, packs are better value.
  • Save 5,000–10,000 dust and 1,000+ gold before an expansion so you can build the day-one meta deck. With Reign on October 20, now is the time to stop spending.

Ranked

  • Leagues: Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond (each Rank 10 down to 1), then Legend, which shows a numbered leaderboard spot.
  • Win streaks and star bonus (based on your previous season's peak) speed up early climbing.
  • Rank floors protect you from dropping below certain ranks within a league.
  • A new season starts each month with a partial rank reset; your reward chest is based on your best rank.

Climbing tips

  • Play one deck for a long stretch. You learn matchups far faster than hopping between five decks.
  • Aggro/tempo decks climb faster per hour because games are short. Save the slow control decks for when you enjoy them.
  • Stop after two or three frustrating losses in a row. Tilt costs more stars than any bad matchup.
  • Use a deck tracker (Hearthstone Deck Tracker or Firestone) to track cards left in your deck and your matchup win rates.

Battlegrounds

An 8-player auto-battler: each turn you spend gold on minions in Bob's Tavern, then your board automatically fights another player's. Last player standing wins; top 4 gains rating.

Fundamentals

  • Gold increases each turn up to 10. Buying a minion costs 3, rerolling costs 1, selling returns 1.
  • Tavern Tier: leveling up your tavern unlocks stronger minions. Upgrading gets cheaper each turn you wait.
  • Triples: three copies of the same minion merge into a golden version and reward a Discover from one tier above your current tavern.
  • Minion types rotate: each lobby uses a subset of types, so read which ones are active at the start.
  • Heroes have unique Hero Powers. Pick one whose power works with what you want to do; many strong heroes are simply "economy" heroes that give you extra resources.

Aberrations (new in 36.6.1, from Sept 22)

  • A discard-synergy type. Each time a friendly Aberration dies, it advances your Deity progress.
  • After three deaths, your randomly chosen Deity enters combat: C'Thun splits its stats among your other minions, while Y'Shaarj has a Deathrattle that re-summons your first two Aberrations that died that combat.
  • Aberrations are guaranteed in every lobby for the first two weeks; Naga are rotated out while they are in.
  • Build around minions that die repeatedly (Reborn, Deathrattle summons, sacrifice effects) rather than raw stats.

General Battlegrounds tips

  • Level on curve early unless your hero rewards staying low. A common baseline is Tier 2 on turn 2 or 3, then leveling efficiently when the upgrade is discounted.
  • Commit to a type by the midgame. Half-built boards lose to focused ones.
  • Health is a resource. Losing a few fights early to level faster is fine; losing lots of health late is not.
  • Scout the leaderboard: know who you fight next and what they are building.
  • Board positioning: put Taunt and Divine Shield units where they absorb attacks; place Deathrattle and "when this attacks" minions deliberately.

Arena Tips

  • Draft for tempo and curve: a balanced curve of 2-, 3-, and 4-drops beats a pile of powerful 7-drops.
  • Removal is king. Take good removal spells highly.
  • Play for board every turn; Arena opponents rarely have the tools to recover from losing the board early.
  • Check an Arena tier list for the current card pool; card values change every expansion.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Crafting too early or crafting cards about to rotate in March 2027.
  • Buying old packs instead of the newest expansion's packs.
  • Trading every turn. Sometimes going face is correct; ask whether the minion threatens you before trading.
  • Overextending into board clears. Against classes with area-of-effect removal, commit only what you need to win the board.
  • Playing on autopilot. Pause to count lethal, count your opponent's possible burn, and consider what they could topdeck.
  • Ignoring card draw. Running out of cards against control is how midrange decks lose.
  • Forgetting event deadlines. Bloodstones stop being earnable on October 6; unspent Bloodstones vanish after October 13.

Advanced Tips

  • Plan two turns ahead. Map out your mana for the next turns so you don't strand cards (e.g. playing a 3-drop now so you can play a 2+2 next turn).
  • Play around the right things. Play around a card only when it would lose you the game, and when doing so costs you little. Over-playing around everything loses tempo.
  • Track what your opponent has not played. A control player holding cards on an empty board often has a board clear.
  • Mulligan by matchup. Keep your removal against aggro; keep your card draw and engines against control.
  • Resource sequencing: use Hero Power when you have spare mana; spend The Coin when it lets you hit a key early play or a big swing turn, not just to dump cards.
  • Expansion launch week is the best time to be flexible. The meta is unsolved for several days, and stat sites like Vicious Syndicate (Data Reaper Report) and HSReplay update quickly — follow their early data before crafting.
  • Battlegrounds economy: in the midgame, a 1-gold reroll that finds a key synergy piece is often better than buying a mediocre minion.

FAQ

When does Reign of the Black Empire come out? October 20, 2026. It adds 135 cards, brings back C'Thun, Yogg-Saron, N'Zoth, and Y'Shaarj as neutral Legendary minions, and introduces the Assemble keyword.

When is the Monk class coming? March 2027, according to Blizzard's BlizzCon 2026 announcement. Chen Stormstout is the class's representative.

What is the Black Market and how do I get Bloodstones? A limited-time shop running September 15 – October 13, 2026. You earn Bloodstones by playing Ranked (until October 6) and spend them on packs, cards, and cosmetics whose prices shift during the event.

Is Hearthstone still free to play in 2026? Yes. The Rewards Track, quests, events, and free Legendaries (like the M.O.T.H.E.R. login gift this patch) let F2P players build competitive decks, especially if they focus on one or two classes.

What should I craft first as a new player? Nothing expensive until you pick a deck. Then craft the core cards of one strong, budget-friendly deck, favoring cards in the newest sets (they stay in Standard longest).

Which sets rotate in 2027? When the first 2027 expansion arrives, Into the Emerald Dream, The Lost City of Un'Goro, and Across the Timeways should leave Standard for Wild, following the normal annual rotation.

What are the new Battlegrounds Aberrations? A discard-synergy minion type added September 22, 2026. Their deaths advance a Deity meter that awakens either C'Thun or Y'Shaarj. Naga are temporarily out of rotation while Aberrations are in.

What is the best deck right now? The meta is shifting fast before a new expansion. Check the latest Vicious Syndicate Data Reaper report or HSReplay for live win rates rather than relying on a static list.
