A full companion for Final Fantasy IX on PC: how abilities, Trance and support gems work, what every party member is for, a disc-by-disc walkthrough outline, missables, side quests, ultimate weapons, achievements, the Steam boosters, and the mods that fix the port.

Researched September 2026 — current as of the Steam release's last update (August 2020). This is a classic single-player game; check the linked sources if something differs.

Quick Start

  • Equipment teaches abilities. Each weapon, armor and accessory lists abilities. Wear it and win battles to earn AP; once an ability is mastered, you keep it even after removing the gear.
  • Don't sell gear before you've mastered its abilities. This is the biggest beginner trap.
  • Support abilities cost Magic Stones. Each character has a limited pool that grows with level. Equip the passive abilities you actually need.
  • Trance fills when you take damage. When full, the character transforms and gets powerful commands (Zidane's Dyne, Vivi's Double Black, and so on). You can't trigger it on demand.
  • Steal from every boss. Many bosses carry gear you can't get anywhere else at that point, and some are missable. Zidane is your thief.
  • Party composition is often forced. The story splits and rejoins the party frequently. Level everyone reasonably and don't neglect anyone's abilities.
  • Synthesis shops combine two items into better gear. Check every new town's synthesist.
  • Use the Steam boosters if you want — high speed and no encounters make replays and grinding painless.
  • Watch Active Time Events (ATEs). They're optional cutscenes that add story and sometimes lead to items.

The Battle System

  • ATB (Active Time Battle): each character acts when their gauge fills. Set battle speed and Active/Wait mode in the config.
  • Rows: front row deals and takes full physical damage; back row takes less physical damage, and mages lose nothing by sitting there.
  • Trance: fills from taking damage and runs until the bar drains. A partly filled gauge carries between battles, but if a fight ends while a character is in Trance, it's gone — so Trance often "wastes" itself on random encounters right before a boss.
  • Status effects are a big deal. Stock Remedies and consider status-protection support abilities for tough bosses.
  • The four-character party limit means role coverage matters: a healer, a physical damage dealer, and magic or utility.

Party Members

Character | Role | Command/skill set | Key tips

Zidane | Thief | Steal, Skill (thief techniques), Dyne in Trance | Always in the party; learn steal-boosting support abilities early

Vivi | Black Mage | Black Magic; Double Black in Trance | Your main magic damage; Focus boosts spells

Garnet (Dagger) | White Mage/Summoner | White Magic, Summon | Summons Shiva, Ifrit, Ramuh, Atomos, Odin, Leviathan, Bahamut, Ark

Steiner | Knight | Sword Art; Sword Magic when Vivi is in the party | Heavy physical damage; the Vivi pairing is excellent

Freya | Dragoon | Jump, Dragon techniques | Jump dodges attacks; some Dragon skills scale with dragons killed

Quina | Blue Mage | Eat enemies to learn Blue Magic | Must eat enemies (low HP) to learn skills; lots are missable if you skip them

Eiko | White Mage/Summoner | White Magic, Summon | Summons Carbuncle, Fenrir, Phoenix, Madeen; best healer

Amarant | Monk | Flair, Throw | Throw uses items as damage; strong late-game

Suggested endgame party

A common strong setup: Zidane, Steiner, Vivi or Freya, Eiko. You'll see plenty of alternatives — Quina with a full Blue Magic kit is a legitimately strong wildcard.

Abilities, AP and Magic Stones

  • Action abilities (spells, skills) are usable as soon as you equip the item that teaches them, and permanent once mastered.
  • Support abilities (passives) must be equipped using Magic Stones.
  • AP is earned per battle; each ability needs a set amount of AP.

Support abilities worth prioritizing

  • Auto-Potion – uses a Potion automatically when hit. Great early; turn it off for bosses if it burns your better items.
  • Auto-Regen / Auto-Haste / Auto-Reflect / Auto-Life – huge late-game.
  • HP+ / MP+ abilities – easy survivability boosts.
  • Healer – turns a character's physical attacks into healing on the target, handy when your healer is down.
  • Level Up / Ability Up – speed up EXP or AP growth while grinding.
  • Killer abilities (e.g., Bird Killer, Bug Killer) – bonus damage versus certain enemy types.
  • Status immunities for boss fights that inflict Stop, Confuse, Venom and so on.

Stat growth note

Each piece of equipment has stat bonuses that affect how your stats grow on level-up. It's a small effect, but if you're aiming for an optimized late game, avoid massive early grinding in poor gear.

Disc-by-Disc Walkthrough Outline

This is an orientation map, not a room-by-room walkthrough.

Disc 1

  • Alexandria – Zidane's Tantalus troupe performs "I Want to Be Your Canary" and kidnaps Princess Garnet. Steiner and Vivi get swept up.
  • Evil Forest and Ice Cavern – first real dungeons.
  • Dali – village with a hidden secret beneath.
  • Lindblum – big city, Festival of the Hunt.
  • Gizamaluke's Grotto and Burmecia – the story darkens.

Disc 2

  • South Gate (Summit Station), Treno and Gargan Roo on Dagger and Steiner's side; Cleyra on Zidane's side; then back to Alexandria.
  • Pinnacle Rocks, Lindblum again.
  • Fossil Roo, Conde Petie, the Black Mage Village, Madain Sari, the Iifa Tree.

Disc 3

  • Alexandria, Treno and the path to the Outer Continent's secrets.
  • Oeilvert, Desert Palace, Esto Gaza, Mount Gulug, Ipsen's Castle.
  • The four elemental shrines (Fire, Wind, Water, Earth), where the party splits up to place the mirrors.
  • Terra, Bran Bal and Pandemonium.

Disc 4

  • Memoria and the final areas. The four Chaos guardians — Maliris (Fire), Tiamat (Wind), Kraken (Water) and Lich (Earth) — are fought inside Memoria, each with its own achievement.
  • Last chance for many side quests before the end. You can leave Memoria and return to the world map to finish optional content.

Missables and Time-Sensitive Content

Missable | Details

Excalibur II | Steiner's best sword. You must reach its spot in Memoria while the game clock is under 12 hours — practically a speedrun challenge.

Boss steals | Many bosses have unique steals, often only available in that fight. Steal until the bag is empty.

Blue Magic | Some enemies only appear in certain areas or discs. Eat them when you see them with Quina.

Friendly monsters | Special friendly enemies ask for specific items (often ore). Giving them all what they want earns the "Mister Nice Guy" achievement and good rewards.

Festival of the Hunt | Have Vivi finish with the top score for "A-Hunting We Will Go" — you play as Zidane, so hold back and let Vivi rack up kills. One-time event in Lindblum.

Nobles' encore | Perform well in the opening play for "A Round of Applause."

Cleyra evacuation | Guide all residents to safety for an achievement.

Early side quests | Some minigames and events (like jump rope and certain ATEs) are easier or only available at certain points.

Rule: Before leaving an area for good, check your steals, eat new enemies with Quina, and watch ATEs.

Major Side Quests

  • Chocobo Hot and Cold – dig for Chocographs and treasures with your chocobo. Raising the beak level unlocks more digging spots, eventually leading to new chocobo abilities and the hidden treasures on the world map ("Diggin' It"). It also leads to the superboss Ozma.
  • Tetra Master – the card game. Win matches, collect cards, and climb the ranks.
  • Stellazzio coins – find zodiac coins and bring them to Queen Stella in Treno for rewards (including "What's Your Sign?" for the Hammer).
  • Treno Auction House – buy rare items; "Auctioneer" requires 10 wins.
  • Frog catching – Quina catches frogs in the marsh; 99 frogs leads toward the Gastro Fork.
  • Jump rope in Alexandria – 100 and 1,000 jumps for achievements.
  • Ragtime Mouse – a quiz that appears in forests on the world map.
  • Mognet and Stiltzkin – deliver letters and buy Stiltzkin's bundles.
  • Nero Brothers' shuffle game and blackjack are minor extras tied to achievements.
  • Hades – the superboss who also runs a synthesis shop with top-tier gear.
  • The Eidolon Wall – uncovering its secret is tied to Eiko's story in Madain Sari.

Ultimate Weapons (Achievement Names)

Character | Weapon | Achievement

Zidane | Ultima Weapon | The Ultimate Dual Blade

Steiner | Excalibur II | The Ultimate Sword

Vivi | Mace of Zeus | The Ultimate Mace

Garnet | Tiger Racket | The Ultimate Racket

Garnet | Whale Whisker (rod) | The Ultimate Rod

Freya | Kain's Lance | Kain's Legacy

Quina | Gastro Fork | The Ultimate Fork

Eiko | Angel Flute | The Ultimate Flute

Amarant | Rune Claws | The Ultimate Claws

Also worth chasing: the full Genji armor set and the regular Excalibur for Steiner.

Boss Tips

  • Steal first, then fight. Especially early bosses.
  • Beatrix fights are scripted; you can't really win them, so focus on stealing and surviving.
  • Guardian bosses in Memoria (Maliris, Tiamat, Kraken, Lich) – bring elemental protection matching each one.
  • Superbosses: Ozma (Chocobo's Air Garden) and Hades (Memoria) are the toughest optional fights. Come in with status protection, Auto-Life and Auto-Haste.
  • Final bosses: stock Elixirs and Phoenix Downs; status immunity makes a huge difference.

Achievements

There are 85 Steam achievements. Highlights:

  • Summon every eidolon (Ramuh, Fenrir, Shiva, Ifrit, Bahamut, Atomos, Leviathan, Carbuncle, Phoenix, Odin, Madeen, Ark).
  • Defeat the four Guardians and Ozma.
  • All support abilities ("A Pillar of Support").
  • Level 99 with at least one character.
  • Tetra Master wins (1, 10, 100).
  • Four male party ("The B-Team") and Quina plus three women ("Femme Fatales?").
  • Dragon Lady – defeat the Behemoth in Treno's weapon shop using Dagger.
  • Movie Critic – view 79 ATEs. Watch every optional ATE when prompted.
  • Rank S Treasure Hunter – collect treasure across the game.
  • Enemy kill counts – 100, 1,000 and 10,000.

Steam Boosters

The PC version includes seven boosters you can toggle anytime:

Booster | What it does

High Speed | Speeds up the game

No Encounters | Turns off random battles

Battle Assistance | Keeps HP/MP and Trance topped up

Attack 9999 | Every attack deals 9,999 damage

Master Abilities | Masters all abilities

Level Max | Sets levels to 99

Max Gil | Maxes out your money

Use High Speed and No Encounters freely for replays or grinding. The bigger cheats trivialize the game — great for revisiting the story, not for a first run.

Mods and Fixes for Modern PCs

  • Memoria Engine – a community engine mod that adds widescreen, higher frame rates, bug fixes and many quality-of-life tweaks.
  • Moguri Mod – upscaled backgrounds and visual improvements.
  • Controller support is built in; check keybind settings if your pad isn't recognized.
  • The official August 2020 update adjusted the battle command window size and fixed BGM restarting after battles and Tetra Master.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Selling gear before mastering its abilities.
  • Forgetting to steal from bosses.
  • Ignoring Quina's Eat. Many Blue Magic spells are strong and missable.
  • Leaving Auto-Potion on for bosses and burning Hi-Potions or Elixirs.
  • Neglecting the Vivi/Steiner combo.
  • Over-grinding early in poor gear (stat growth follows equipment bonuses).
  • Rushing past ATEs. You lose story, items and an achievement.

Advanced Tips

  • Excalibur II run: it needs very fast play (under 12 hours at the relevant point). Most people do it on a second playthrough with No Encounters.
  • Chocobo early and often. Chocograph treasures are some of the best items in the game.
  • Eiko plus Auto-Life makes the hardest fights forgiving.
  • Freya's Dragon techniques get stronger based on dragons killed; hunt dragon-type enemies.
  • Zidane's Thievery grows stronger with successful steals — steal a lot.
  • Synthesis snowball: combine old gear into new gear at synthesis shops; it's often cheaper than buying.
  • Treasure hunter rank: open chests, dig, and complete side quests to reach S.
