A practical guide to Pocketpair's everything-at-once survival sandbox: what to do in your first hours, how progression and eras work, how to set up farming and automation, how taming with Monster Prisms works, and how to approach dungeons and bosses in the current Early Access build.
Researched September 2026 — current as of patch v20260825.1206 (6th Anniversary Mini Update). Craftopia is still in Early Access with a 1.0 release announced for 2027; check the linked sources if something differs.
Status in 2026
- Craftopia entered Early Access on Steam on September 4, 2020.
- On September 4, 2026 (the 6th anniversary) Pocketpair announced that Craftopia will leave Early Access and release as Version 1.0 in 2027. The team says the focus is on polishing and fixing the existing experience rather than piling on new content.
- Version 1.0 will also launch on Xbox Series X/S and Xbox on PC alongside Steam; 1.0 will not be released on Xbox One because Pocketpair could not reach acceptable performance and stability there.
- An opt-in alpha-unstable beta branch (Steam, Properties, Betas) gets builds early. Back up your saves before trying it.
Quick Start
- Punch, then craft tools. Gather wood, stone, and fibers by hand, then make basic tools at a workbench. Tools speed every gathering task.
- Watch your hunger. Cook food as soon as you can; raw food is a poor long-term plan.
- Level up and spend skill points. There are 100+ skills. Early points into gathering, crafting, and one combat line pay off fastest.
- Build a small base near varied resources (trees, stone, water) before you worry about looks.
- Advance your era. Crafting stations unlock in tiers; later eras unlock far stronger gear, refineries, and machines.
- Carry Monster Prisms. Throwing one at a weakened creature can capture it — most monsters, not just animals, are tamable.
- Treasure chests and dungeons are your best early loot. When your detector starts beeping, a dungeon is nearby.
- Automate the boring stuff early. Once you can build auto-gathering machines and conveyors, the game opens up.
- Play with friends. Co-op makes bosses and building much faster.
How Progression Works
Craftopia layers several progression systems:
System | What it does | How you advance
Character level | Gives skill points | Combat, gathering, crafting, exploring
Skill tree | 100+ active and passive skills | Spend skill points
Eras / tech tiers | Unlock crafting stations and recipes | Craft and progress through the tiers
World Level | Scales content and unlocks higher-tier crafting | Progressing the world and bosses
Picture Book | Tracks items and monsters found | Discovering and defeating things
Equipment and enchantments | 250+ equipment items, 300+ enchantments | Crafting, loot, dungeons
Late-game tiers include the Age of Gods (added in a 2024 winter update alongside the Inferno Volcano region) and the Craftopia Era (added in the 2025 summer update). You do not need to rush them; each tier requires infrastructure from the one before.
Skill priorities
- Early: skills that improve gathering speed, inventory handling, and one weapon type you like.
- Mid: crafting and automation-related skills once you start building machines.
- Late: combat and magic skills for bosses; elemental attributes (fire, lightning, ice) were added to weapons in the 2025 Spring Update, so matching elements to monsters matters more than before.
Survival Basics
- Hunger is the core survival pressure. Cooked meat, fish, and crops keep you going.
- Night is dark and makes exploring riskier. Have a lit shelter and torches ready before your first nightfall.
- Death sends you back to your spawn point. Carry only what you need into risky areas early on.
- Storage: chests are cheap; sort resources as soon as you have more than one of each type.
First Days Checklist
- Gather wood, stone, and fibers.
- Craft basic tools (axe, pickaxe) and a simple weapon.
- Build a workbench and a campfire; cook food.
- Put down a small shelter with storage.
- Hunt easy animals for meat and hides.
- Open every treasure chest you can see.
- Spend skill points as soon as you level.
- Start a tiny farm plot so you have food later.
Farming
- 20+ crops can be grown.
- Start with a few plots by hand, then scale with agricultural machines once unlocked.
- Crop output feeds cooking, animal care, and some crafting chains.
- Orchards and fruit trees make good long-term food sources once your base is stable.
Automation and Factories
Automation is Craftopia's biggest late-game draw.
- Auto-gathering: almost every gathering activity (logs, stone, ore) can be automated with machines.
- Belt conveyors move items between machines, chests, and refineries.
- Sorting Pipes route items out of chests. As of the March 2026 patch, items are ejected in chest order regardless of exclusion settings, so recheck older sorting setups after updating.
- Refineries process raw materials into higher-tier materials. More advanced refineries unlock in later tiers.
- Supply Group Chest (added with the 5th anniversary update) helps share supplies across your base.
Design tips:
- Keep raw-material lines short and direct into storage.
- Put a buffer chest before every refinery so a jam does not stop the whole line.
- Build factories near the resources they consume.
- Label or color-code your chests.
Taming and Pets (Monster Prism)
- Throw a Monster Prism at a creature to capture it. Weakened targets are easier.
- Cows, deer, and most monsters can be tamed.
- Tamed animals can provide resources (breeding), fight alongside you, or serve as mounts depending on the creature.
- Capturing monsters also fills your Picture Book.
Exploring the World
Known named regions include:
Region | Notes
Brigandine Valley | Early-to-mid area; new caves unlocked in the 2025 Spring Update
Sherbert Iceberg | Cold region with caves
Unnefell Desert | Desert with caves and tougher monsters
Miasma Wetlands | Swamp region; home to the Wedge Tower
Owatatsu Islands | Island region
Inferno Volcano | Late region added in the 2024 winter update; includes the Ruin of the End dungeon and a village visited by the Merchant Smith
There is also an Empty Island world option (2025 summer update) that lets you build a custom island, bringing items over via inter-character cloud storage.
Vehicles
Craft hoverboards, motorbikes, helicopters, cars, biplanes, tanks, hot-air balloons and more. The 2024 summer update added vehicle customization with custom parts, and the 5th anniversary update added hoverboard rail riding. Once you can build a flying vehicle, map exploration gets dramatically faster.
Fishing and sailing
Fish along coastlines early, then build a ship to go further. Turtle shells from fishing make a shield, and big catches like whales are possible later.
Dungeons and Bosses
- Dungeons are randomized each time you enter, with a boss at the end.
- Bosses grant strong loot and progression unlocks.
- Named bosses include the Hydra, Anubis, the Dragon (with multiple difficulty levels in the Boss Challenge Dungeon), the Noble Frog, the Paladin, and the Messenger of God (in a cave in the Inferno Volcano region).
- The Boss Challenge Dungeon awards medals you can trade with the Medal Trader.
- The Ruin of the End is a repeatable grinding dungeon with a harder variant.
Boss prep checklist:
- Upgrade armor and weapons to your current tier.
- Bring stacks of healing food and potions.
- Match elemental damage to the boss where possible.
- Bring a friend or a strong tamed companion.
Seasonal Content
Pocketpair adds small anniversary and seasonal items. For the 6th anniversary (September 2026) Anubis carries something special, and colored Mono Lanterns, Mono Banners, and a Mono Street Light were added.
Update Timeline (2024-2026)
Useful for working out which systems exist in your save and which guides or videos are out of date:
Update | Patch | What it added
2024 Summer Update | v20240629.0410 | Vehicle customization system
2024 Winter Update | v20241219.1835 | The Age of Gods era and the Inferno Volcano biome
2025 Spring Update | v20250313.0451 | Fire, lightning and ice element attributes on weapons; new caves in Brigandine Valley
2025 Summer Update | v20250623.1820 | The Craftopia Era; the Empty Island world; Inter-character Cloud Storage
5th Anniversary Update | v20250908.1752 | Supply Group Chest; hoverboard rail riding (tested on alpha-unstable in August 2025)
March 2026 patch | v20260316.2048 | Sorting Pipe behavior change; fix for random treasure chests not spawning
6th Anniversary Mini Update | v20260825.1206 | Anniversary surprise from Anubis; six colored Mono Lanterns, Mono Banners and a Mono Street Light
Tip: if random treasure chests stopped appearing in an older save, that was a bug fixed in the March 2026 patch. Update before assuming your world is empty.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Hoarding skill points. Spend them; early gathering skills compound.
- Building a huge base too early. Build small, then move once you understand where resources are.
- Ignoring automation. Manual gathering does not scale into late tiers.
- Fighting bosses under-geared. Upgrade to your current tier first.
- Trying alpha-unstable without backups. It can break saves.
- Leaving tamed creatures unused. They are free help in combat and resource production.
Advanced Tips
- Plan conveyor layouts on paper (or at least in your head) before you place the first belt; rebuilding lines is tedious.
- Use buffer chests before refineries and after gathering machines.
- Scout with vehicles, not on foot, once you have them.
- Grind the Ruin of the End for materials when you hit the late game.
- Use elemental attributes to shortcut hard fights.
- Co-op division of labor: one player farms and automates, another explores and fights.
