How to still play DICE's 2010 classic in 2026: what happened to the official servers, how the community keeps multiplayer alive, and the class, map and destruction knowledge that still wins rounds.

Researched September 2026 — current as of the post-shutdown era (official servers offline since December 8, 2023). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Server Status: Read This First

  • Delisted: EA removed Bad Company 2 from digital storefronts on April 28, 2023, alongside the original Bad Company and Battlefield 1943. You cannot buy it on Steam any more; the Steam page (app 24960) remains for existing owners.
  • Official servers shut down: EA's online services for the game closed on December 8, 2023. Official matchmaking, server browser and stat tracking are gone.
  • Single-player still works. The campaign is fully playable offline if you own the game.
  • Community multiplayer: Project Rome. The Venice Unleashed community runs Project Rome, a community backend that lets owners of the PC version keep playing multiplayer on community-hosted servers. It is a free, donation-funded project; its old forum is read-only and the community now coordinates through its Discord (linked from the Venice Unleashed site). Follow their current instructions rather than old tutorials, because setup steps have changed over the years.
  • Consoles: Multiplayer on PS3 and Xbox 360 ended with the official shutdown.

Everything below about classes, maps and tactics applies to Project Rome servers, which run the same game.

Quick Start

  • Own it before it matters. If it is already in your Steam library, you can install and play the campaign; you cannot buy it new.
  • Use Project Rome for online. Official servers are gone; community servers are the only multiplayer.
  • Everything soft is destructible. Walls, roofs, fences and entire buildings come down. Cover is temporary; use explosives to make your own angles.
  • Rush is the signature mode. Attackers destroy M-COM stations in stages, defenders hold. Most classic BC2 moments happen here.
  • Pick your class for the job, not your K/D. Medics revive and resupply health, Assaults drop ammo, Engineers fix and kill vehicles, Recons spot and snipe.
  • Play with your squad. You can spawn on squadmates, and squad-only modes (Squad Rush, Squad Deathmatch) are built around four-player teams.
  • Each class levels separately. Unlocks come from playing that class, so stick with one for a while.
  • Spot everything. Spotting enemies marks them for your team; it is free and wins fights.
  • The campaign is a good warm-up. It teaches destruction, vehicles and the weapons feel before you face people.

The Four Classes

Each class has its own rank track and unlocks. Assault, Engineer, Medic and Recon are the only kits.

Class | Core job | Key tools | Typical weapons

Assault | Frontline infantry, ammo supply | Ammo box, underslung 40mm grenade launcher, smoke | Assault rifles

Engineer | Anti-vehicle, vehicle repair | Repair tool, rocket launchers, anti-tank mines | Carbines and SMGs

Medic | Keep the squad alive | Medkit, defibrillator | Light machine guns

Recon | Scouting and long-range | Motion sensors, mortar strike, C4 | Sniper rifles

Class tips

  • Assault: Your ammo box keeps the whole squad fighting. Drop it at every defensive position, especially near Engineers who burn through rockets.
  • Engineer: You are the only answer to tanks and helicopters in a hurry. Hide mines on vehicle routes, repair friendly armor from behind, and do not waste rockets on infantry behind thick walls.
  • Medic: Revives are the biggest team contribution in the game. Stay one step behind the push, throw medkits constantly, and use the LMG to suppress defenders at M-COMs.
  • Recon: Motion sensors and spotting matter more than sniping. The mortar strike is excellent against campers in buildings and entrenched defenders. C4 on a quad bike or on an M-COM wall is a classic play.

Specializations

Every loadout also has specialization slots (weapon and vehicle perks) such as extra ammo, extra grenades, faster sprint, stronger bullets and vehicle armor or ammo upgrades. They unlock as you rank up; pick what suits your role, for example extra explosives for Engineers or vehicle-focused perks if you live in tanks.

Game Modes

Mode | Players | How it works

Conquest | Up to 32 | Capture and hold flags to drain enemy tickets.

Rush | Up to 32 | Attackers destroy pairs of M-COM stations to push through stages with limited tickets; defenders hold.

Squad Rush | Two squads | Rush on a small scale, one squad attacking and one defending.

Squad Deathmatch | Four squads | Squads compete for kills, often with a vehicle on the map.

Onslaught | Co-op (consoles only) | Up to four players against AI waves; the PC version was cancelled.

Maps

Base game and the free VIP map packs include Panama Canal, Valparaiso, Laguna Presa, Arica Harbor, White Pass, Isla Inocentes, Atacama Desert, Port Valdez, Nelson Bay and Laguna Alta, plus remakes of Bad Company 1 maps (Oasis, Harvest Day, Cold War, Heavy Metal). Community servers choose their own rotations, so you will see some maps far more than others.

Map-reading rules that work everywhere

  • Rush defenders lose M-COMs to explosives through walls, not just to arming. If the M-COM is inside a building, the attackers can blow the building down on it. Defend from positions that can see the charges being planted from multiple angles.
  • Snow and desert maps are long-range. Recons and vehicles dominate; infantry should move with armor.
  • Harbor and town maps are close-quarters. Shotguns, LMGs and grenade launchers shine; destruction turns corridors into kill zones.

Rush Playbook

Rush is where most community servers spend their time, so it is worth having a plan for both sides.

Attacking

  • Smoke and push with the squad. Assault smoke covers the approach to an M-COM; a lone attacker in the open gets picked off.
  • Arm from the side nobody is watching. Defenders focus the front door; blow a hole in the side wall and arm from there.
  • Or skip arming entirely. If the M-COM sits in a destructible building, level the building with tanks, grenade launchers and C4. The objective is destroyed when the structure comes down on it.
  • Keep Medics close. A fast defib turns a failed push into a second attempt without spending tickets.
  • Engineers escort armor. Tanks are your demolition crew; keep them repaired and let them work.
  • Watch the ticket count. When tickets get low, stop trading kills and commit everyone to one M-COM.

Defending

  • Defend the approach, not the box. Stand where you can shoot attackers before they reach the M-COM.
  • Recons spot and sensor the routes. Motion sensors reveal flankers coming through walls.
  • Mine the vehicle lanes. Stopping the attacker tanks stops the demolition plan.
  • Disarm immediately. A planted charge can be disarmed; do not let it tick while you chase kills.
  • Fall back as a team. When a stage falls, regroup at the next pair of M-COMs instead of dying one by one in the old zone.

Vietnam Expansion

Released December 18, 2010 on PC (December 21 on consoles), Bad Company 2: Vietnam adds five maps, six vehicles, 15 weapons and period music. The maps are Vantage Point, Hill 137, Cao Son Temple, Phu Bai Valley, and Operation Hastings (originally gated behind a community milestone, then released early on consoles as a "new year's gift"). It is a separate DLC; whether it is available on a given community server depends on the host.

Vehicles and Destruction

  • 15 vehicles in base multiplayer, including tanks, the UH-60 transport helicopter, attack helicopters, quad bikes, patrol boats and the UAV drone.
  • Destruction 2.0 (Frostbite 1.5): Explosives take chunks out of cover, and enough damage brings whole buildings down, killing everyone inside. Tanks and grenade launchers are the fastest demolition tools.
  • Helicopter play: Transport helis are great for Rush flanks. Attack helis need a gunner and a pilot who stays at range from Engineers.
  • Quad bike plus C4 remains a cheap and effective anti-vehicle trick, and a well-known BC2 meme.

Campaign Overview (Spoiler-Light)

You play Preston Marlowe in B Company alongside Sergeant Samuel Redford, Sweetwater and Haggard, with helicopter pilot Flynn. After a 1944 prologue, the story crosses South America (including Bolivia and Chile) and Alaska while the squad chases Russian Colonel Arkady Kirilenko and an electromagnetic-pulse superweapon called Scalar.

  • Difficulty: Normal is forgiving; Hard is a real challenge because enemies flank and grenades are frequent.
  • Collectibles: Missions hide extra weapon pickups and destructible collectibles off the main path; check a mission-by-mission list if you are chasing 100 percent, because some are easy to miss in vehicle sections.
  • Use destruction in the campaign too. Collapse buildings with enemies inside rather than fighting room to room.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Buying the game on a reseller site expecting official multiplayer. Official servers are shut down; only community servers remain.
  • Following outdated server tutorials. Project Rome instructions evolve; use the current guidance from the community channels.
  • Hiding in a building on Rush defense. Attackers will drop it on you.
  • Engineers who never repair. A repaired tank is worth more than a new spawn.
  • Recons who never spot or use motion sensors. Kills are optional; information is not.
  • Ignoring your squad. Squad spawning is the fastest way back into a Rush push.

Advanced Tips

  • Pre-fire through destructible cover. Grenade launchers and explosives can open a sightline before you peek.
  • Mortar strikes on M-COM rooms. Recons can soften defended objectives without ever showing themselves.
  • Stack defibs and ammo. A Medic and an Assault together keep a squad fighting almost indefinitely.
  • Mine vehicle chokepoints. Tanks follow roads; Engineers can funnel them onto mines.
  • Control the high ground on snow maps. Recons and motion sensors on ridges make pushes predictable.

Running It on a Modern PC

  • Keep the Steam copy installed. Community multiplayer is aimed at existing PC owners.
  • Launch issues: Classic DirectX 9/10/11-era games sometimes need compatibility mode or running as administrator on Windows 10 and 11. Try those first if the launcher does nothing.
  • Frame rate: Frostbite 1.5 runs easily on modern hardware; if physics or menus behave strangely at very high refresh rates, cap the frame rate with your GPU driver.
