A spoiler-light guide to KEIZO's side-scrolling action RPG: how combat, growth and equipment fit together, how to pick a playstyle, what to do when a boss walls you, and how to approach the post-game Postscript and the Gaiden DLC.
Researched September 2026 — current as of the English V1.0.9 update (December 2024) and the French localization added February 10, 2026. Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.
Quick Start
- Pick a difficulty you'll enjoy, not the one you think you "should" play. There are six difficulty options. The story is long; a comfortable difficulty keeps it fun, and you can still find challenge in the post-game.
- Grind a little, often. ASTLIBRA is a classic JRPG at heart. If a boss is crushing you, a short round of farming for levels, Force and gear is intended, not a failure.
- Collect Force. Force is a separate growth resource from experience. Enemies drop it; spending it raises your character's power. Pick it up every time.
- Upgrade and master equipment. Forging improves gear, and mastering equipment opens more options. Check the forge whenever you reach a new town.
- Talk to Karon. Your talking bird companion isn't just flavor: story elements in ASTLIBRA are often made into game mechanics, and Karon is central to several.
- Use Possession Skills. Build stamina by fighting, then spend it on powerful Possession Skills. They're how you melt bosses.
- Try weird builds. A warrior with bows and throwing knives, or a mage who smashes with a staff and casts at the same time, are both valid. The game supports mixing.
- Don't stop at the ending. After the final chapter, the Postscript adds extra story, new adventures and a new system.
What Kind of Game Is This?
ASTLIBRA Revision is a side-scrolling action RPG with a long, twisting story about time and fate. The protagonist and Karon, a talking raven, travel across multiple chapters; the hero acquires the Libra, a set of scales said to be able to change the past, which gives the game its name and is central to the story. It was developed by a solo developer (KEIZO) over 14 years, then revised for over a year for this release.

Combat Fundamentals
Basic flow
- Attack to deal damage and build stamina.
- Avoid enemy attacks. Watch for tells; big enemies telegraph heavy hits.
- Spend stamina on Possession Skills when an opening appears, especially on bosses.
- Heal between waves with your items. Don't wait until you're nearly dead.
Crowd control
Many areas throw large numbers of enemies at you. Keep moving, use attacks with wide arcs or ranged options, and fight near a screen edge so enemies approach from one side.
Boss fights
- Learn one attack at a time. On a first attempt, focus on survival and watch the pattern.
- Keep stamina ready for the boss's vulnerable windows.
- Check your gear before retrying. A single upgrade or a better-matched weapon type can change a fight.
- Farm if needed. The game expects occasional grinding, especially on higher difficulties.
Pre-boss checklist
- Spend all your Force.
- Upgrade or forge your best weapon and armor at the last town.
- Restock healing items to the limit you're comfortable with.
- Set your skills to match the boss: ranged options for bosses that are dangerous up close, heavy melee for slow bosses.
- Walk in with a full stamina plan: know when you'll use your Possession Skills.
- If you lose three or four times in a row, go farm for a while instead of forcing it.
Character Growth
Levels
Experience from enemies raises your level and base stats. This happens naturally as you play.
Force
Force is collected from enemies and invested to grow the character. It's one of the main ways to become stronger beyond simple levelling:
- Collect Force in every fight; it adds up fast in dense areas.
- Invest it regularly instead of hoarding. Growth is only useful once it's spent.
- If you're stuck, a Force-farming session in a familiar area is usually the quickest fix.
Equipment
- Always pick up the most trustworthy equipment. New areas usually have better gear than what you're wearing.
- Forge to improve weapons and armor.
- Master equipment to unlock more tactical options. Rotating gear you haven't mastered yet can be worth it even when the numbers are slightly lower.
Choosing a Playstyle
ASTLIBRA's weapon types and skills are flexible enough that "class" is a choice you make with gear and skills, not a fixed role.
Playstyle | How it plays | Good for
Melee warrior | Heavy weapons, close-range combos | Players who like aggressive, simple combat
Ranged fighter | Bows and throwing knives | Keeping bosses at distance, kiting groups
Staff mage | Staff melee plus magic | Players who want mixed ranged and melee damage
Hybrid | Mix a melee weapon with ranged options | Flexible; adapt to each area
Tips:
- Match your build to the boss. A boss that punishes melee may be easier with ranged options, and vice versa.
- Don't be afraid to respec your approach by changing equipment and skill loadouts between areas.
- Test new skills on regular enemies before relying on them against a boss.
Progression Advice
- Explore every chapter fully. Hidden items and gear improve your odds later.
- Keep a stock of healing items. Top up whenever you pass a shop.
- Revisit earlier areas when you get stronger for easier farming.
- Read the story. The plot twists are a big part of the appeal, and some mechanics are tied to story events.
Difficulty Guide
With six options, pick based on how you want to spend your time:
- Lower difficulties: Story-first. Minimal grinding; bosses are forgiving.
- Middle difficulties: The intended balance for most players. Expect occasional farming for tough bosses.
- Higher difficulties: Demanding. Expect to learn boss patterns in detail and to build carefully.
You can still find plenty of challenge in the Postscript, so there's no shame in a lower difficulty for the main story.
The Postscript
After you "beat" the game, the Postscript adds:
- Extra story that continues after the final chapter.
- New adventure areas.
- A fresh system that pushes the potential of skills, equipment and your build creativity.
Treat the Postscript as a new game layer: re-evaluate your gear and skill choices, since the new system can change what's strongest.
ASTLIBRA Gaiden: The Cave of Phantom Mist
Detail | Gaiden
Released | February 13, 2024 (Steam DLC); October 17, 2024 (Switch, standalone)
Protagonist | A new heroine: the baker's reclusive daughter, pulled into an adventure when guild members vanish and her sister falls ill
Structure | Randomly generated dungeons in a roguelike-style loop, with its own growth methods and new magic attacks
Length | 20+ hours per the store page
Requirement | On Steam you need ASTLIBRA Revision installed; on Switch it doesn't need the main game
Recognition | Won "Best DLC of the Year (Independent Game)" at the UCG Game Awards 2024
How to approach it:
- Treat it as its own game. It's a different character with her own growth, so your main-game build doesn't carry over; expect to learn a new kit.
- Roguelike rhythm: randomly generated floors mean you can't memorise layouts. Push while you're strong, and retreat and regroup rather than gambling a good run.
- Play order: it's a side story, so play it after the main game or as a break from it. The Complete Edition bundle on Steam includes both.
- It has been available in Spanish since May 2024, and the store now lists French too.
Languages and Technical Notes
- Supported languages include Simplified and Traditional Chinese, Japanese, English, Korean, Spanish and, since February 10, 2026, French.
- Version 1.1.7 (October 2024) added Steam Deck resolution support for 2K and 4K.
- The English V1.0.9 update (December 2024) fixed spacing between text sections.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Hoarding Force. Spend it; unspent Force doesn't help you.
- Refusing to grind. A few minutes of farming is part of the design.
- Sticking with old gear. Upgrade or swap equipment when you reach a new area.
- Ignoring Possession Skills. They're your biggest damage and the answer to many bosses.
- Picking the hardest difficulty on a first run and burning out on the long story.
- Skipping dialogue with Karon. Some mechanics are tied to story moments.
- Stopping at the ending credits. The Postscript is a big chunk of the content.
Advanced Tips
- Save stamina for boss openings. Unloading Possession Skills at the wrong moment wastes them.
- Rotate equipment for mastery. Mastering more gear opens more options in the long run.
- Farm in dense areas. More enemies per screen means faster experience and Force.
- Adapt per boss. Switch between melee and ranged loadouts based on the boss's pattern.
- In the Postscript, rethink everything. The new system rewards experimenting with skill and equipment combinations you may have ignored.
FAQ
How long is ASTLIBRA Revision? It's a long game with multiple chapters and a substantial Postscript. Expect a long campaign, especially if you do side content.
