Biome-by-biome progression from your first campfire to the Deep North, with boss summons, key materials, food and building rules, and what changed in the 1.0 release.
Researched September 2026 — current as of Valheim 1.0 (Deep North), released 9 September 2026. Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.
Quick Start
- Eat three different foods. You have three food slots. Food, not armor, is your health and stamina pool. Always fight fed.
- Get the Rested buff. Sit near a fire under a roof to become Rested; it boosts stamina regeneration and skill XP. Better comfort items (beds, chairs, banners, a hearth) lengthen it.
- Beat bosses in order. Each boss drops the item that unlocks the next tier of materials. Skipping ahead mostly gets you killed.
- Place a bed and a workbench early. The bed sets your spawn point; the workbench unlocks building and repairs.
- Portals cannot carry metal. Ores, ingots and some materials must travel by boat or on foot (a world modifier can change this).
- Dying drops your gear in a tombstone. Go back carefully, ideally after eating, to recover it; the "Corpse Run" buff helps.
- Block and parry. A well-timed block (parry) staggers most enemies. Shields and dodge-rolling are core skills, not optional.
- Build near a boss altar only after you are ready. Summoning is deliberate; you choose when to fight.
- Use world modifiers if you want. Combat difficulty, resource rates, portal rules and raids can be tuned when creating a world.

Biome by Biome
Meadows
- Threats: Greylings, Necks, boars, the occasional troll wandering in at night later.
- Gather: wood, stone, flint, raspberries, mushrooms, deer hides, boar meat and leather scraps.
- Build: workbench, bed, campfire, chopping block; craft a flint axe, club or spear and a wooden shield.
- Tame boars with mushrooms, raspberries or carrots for easy meat and leather later.
Black Forest
- Threats: Greydwarf brutes and shamans, skeletons in Burial Chambers, trolls.
- Gather: copper and tin (need the Antler pickaxe), core wood, blueberries, carrots from seeds.
- Craft: smelter and charcoal kiln, Bronze (copper + tin), bronze weapons, bronze armor, karve boat.
- Find: Ancient seeds from greydwarf nests (Elder summon), Surtling cores in Burial Chambers.
Swamp
- Threats: Draugr, Blobs (poison), Leeches in water, Wraiths at night.
- Gather: scrap iron in Sunken Crypts (Swamp key), turnip seeds, entrails, guck, Withered bones.
- Craft: iron weapons and armor, Longship upgrades, poison resistance mead (very important).
- Bonemass tip: use blunt weapons (maces), bring poison resistance and the Elder's power.
Mountains
- Threats: wolves, drakes, Stone Golems, cold (freezing).
- Gather: silver (use the Wishbone to find buried veins), obsidian, wolf pelts, dragon eggs.
- Craft: Frost resistance mead or wolf armor chest/cloak; silver weapons, Fenris set later.
- Tame wolves with raw meat for a strong base defense.
Plains
- Threats: Fulings (goblins), Deathsquitos, Lox, Growths.
- Gather: barley and flax (with the Cultivator), black metal scraps from Fuling villages, Lox pelts.
- Craft: Blackmetal weapons and Padded armor, windmill and spinning wheel, Lox cape.
- Tip: a tamed Lox is a strong defender; Deathsquitos punish low health, so wear good armor and carry a bow.
Mistlands
- Threats: Seekers, Gjall, Ticks, Dvergr (neutral until provoked), fog.
- Gather: Black cores, Yggdrasil wood, Soft tissue, and loot from Dvergr structures.
- Craft: Black forge, Galdr table, magic weapons (eitr-based staves), Carapace armor, Wisplight for vision.
- Tip: build ground-level paths or use the Feather cape to glide off heights; the fog hides enemies.
Ashlands
- Threats: Charred warriors, Morgen, Asksvin, Fallen Valkyries, lava and heat.
- Gather: flametal from ore processed in the Blast furnace, Asksvin hides, Grausten stone.
- Build: Drakkar boat (fireproof ship for Ashlands shores), siege tools for fortresses.
- Tip: bring fire resistance mead and ranged options; fortresses need catapults or battering rams.
Deep North (new in 1.0)
The Deep North is the final biome, a frozen coastline in the far north reached after the Ashlands.
- Threats: harsh cold and deep snow; 1.0 adds more than ten new creatures, including Gammeltrolls on the surface and Elakings and Eyeless Ones in the Winding Tunnels. Breaking the Malicious Ice triggers a Jotun Invasion.
- Wildlife: Seals (their pelts are a crafting material).
- Key resource: Bloodgold, smelted from Petrified Tissue in a Blast furnace. Petrified Tissue comes from mining petrified Gammeltrolls (found partly buried in the ground) or from killing a Gammeltroll; mining them needs Ember Charges, crafted from Seal pelts and Embers.
- Locations: Abandoned Homesteads (a good foothold; barrels and wardrobes hold seeds, food, or equipment moulds, and the Winding Tunnels entrance is at the back of the biggest structure), Winding Tunnels (Frostcores and weapon moulds), Mörkhalla (opened with an Intricate Key; holds the vegvisir to the Aesir Passage and the Malicious Ice), and Ancient Altars near Homesteads, where offering Memorial Coals grants Frostfire or Thunderblood Essence for empowering weapons.
- Boss path: break the Malicious Ice at the bottom of Mörkhalla to trigger a Jotun Invasion and obtain Malicious Blood, then offer it at the altar to fight Kall Fimbulbringer, encased in ice in The Prison beyond the Aesir Passage. Check the altar for the exact offering amount.
- Gear to expect: the Protector and Caller armor sets, Nord weapons, and Spirit Caller / Lightning Strike magic weapons.
Prep: strongest Ashlands gear, frost resistance, top-tier food and meads, a Drakkar or Longship with room for loot, and a secured forward base with portal.
Food Guide
- Pair one health food, one stamina food, and one balanced or eitr food for most fights. Mages swap for eitr foods.
- Cook in batches and store it; food does not rot in chests, and each eaten food's buff simply wears down over time.
- Tier up food every biome: Meadows (boar meat, raspberries) to Black Forest (queens jam, deer stew) to Swamp (turnip stew, sausages) to Plains (bread, lox meat pie) and beyond. 1.0 added more than 20 new foods, including Deep North recipes.
Building Rules
- Structural integrity: blue (grounded) to green, yellow, red, then collapse. Stone needs ground contact; wood does not span far.
- Cover wood with roof pieces (thatch or wood shingle, 26 or 45 degree) to stop rain damage; exposed wood slowly loses health in the rain.
- Fires need ventilation or you will choke on smoke.
- Comfort matters: more comfort equals longer Rested.
- Defense: stakewalls and ditches stop raids; dig the ground down around your base (using the pickaxe) so enemies cannot reach walls easily.
- Raids depend on which bosses you have defeated and only happen when you are at or near your base.
- 1.0 added more than 80 new building pieces.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Fighting with one food. Your health pool is tiny without three foods.
- Sailing across open ocean without upgrades. Serpents will sink a Karve.
- Carrying ore into a portal. It will not let you through; plan boat routes.
- Running into Mountains without frost resistance. Freezing drains health.
- Fighting Bonemass with swords. Blunt damage wins.
- Ignoring parrying. It is the difference between trivial and deadly fights.
- Exploring the Deep North in an existing, fully explored world. New terrain generally only generates in unexplored areas; on old worlds, head far north into unexplored regions or start a fresh world.
Advanced Tips
- Skill decay on death: dying loses a portion of skill progress; the "No Skill Drain" buff after death prevents stacking losses.
- Stamina management: you regenerate faster when not blocking or running; Rested boosts regen.
- Pickaxe as a tool, not a weapon. Leveling pickaxe speeds mining a lot in later biomes.
- Carts and ships: transport metals over land with carts on roads you level with the hoe.
- Tame animals to build farms: boars, wolves, Lox (and more in later biomes) provide food and defense.
- 1.0 extras: upgradeable pockets for more carry options, achievements, and all hair and beard styles available from the start.
- Crossplay: PC and Xbox players have been able to play together since the Xbox launch; check the official 1.0 FAQ for the current list of supported platforms.
FAQ
When was Valheim 1.0 released? 9 September 2026, leaving Early Access with the Deep North biome.
Do I need a new world for the Deep North? As with earlier biome updates (Mistlands, Ashlands), new terrain generally only generates in areas you have not explored yet, so heavily explored northern regions may keep their old terrain. The official 1.0 FAQ covers world saves and mods; starting a fresh world is the safest way to see the full Deep North.
Who is the final boss? Kall Fimbulbringer, encased in ice in The Prison beyond the Aesir Passage. You fight him by offering Malicious Blood, obtained by breaking the Malicious Ice in Mörkhalla (which triggers a Jotun Invasion).
What is Bloodgold? The Deep North metal, smelted from Petrified Tissue in a Blast furnace.
Can I play Valheim with friends on console? PC and Xbox support crossplay. Platform support can change with releases, so check the official Valheim 1.0 FAQ for the current console list.
What is the best order to fight the bosses? Eikthyr, The Elder, Bonemass, Moder, Yagluth, The Queen, Fader, Kall Fimbulbringer.
