Valheim · Version 1.0 "Deep North" (patch 1.0.14) · Updated Sept 2026
Valheim left Early Access on September 9, 2026, with the Deep North biome and the eighth and final Forsaken, Kall Fimbulbringer. So the full route is now eight bosses across eight biomes, from Eikthyr in the Meadows to Kall at the top of the world. This guide goes through them in order: what to bring, how to find and summon each boss, what to watch for in the fight, and what the drop opens up next. Get the basics from the first section right and everything after it gets easier.
Boss overview
# | Boss | Biome | Summon | Key drop → unlock
1 | Eikthyr | Meadows | 2× Deer Trophy | Hard Antler → pickaxe (mining copper and tin)
2 | The Elder | Black Forest | 3× Ancient Seed | Swamp Key → opens Sunken Crypts (iron)
3 | Bonemass | Swamp | 10× Withered Bone | Wishbone → finds silver in the Mountains
4 | Moder | Mountains | 3× Dragon Egg | Dragon Tear → Artisan Table
5 | Yagluth | Plains | 5× Fuling Totem | Torn Spirit → Wisp Fountain (wisps for the Wisplight)
6 | The Queen | Mistlands | Sealbreaker opens the Infested Citadel (refights: 3× Seeker Soldier trophy) | Majestic Carapace → Artisan Press
7 | Fader | Ashlands | 3× Bell (each made from 3 Bell Fragments) | Kindled Ribs (formerly Fader Relic) → Eternal Pyre
8 | Kall Fimbulbringer | Deep North | 3× Malicious Blood at the Strange Bowl | Sacrificial Blood (ends the game) + Crown Jewel → Crown of Valheim
Every boss also drops a trophy. Hang it on the Sacrificial Stones in the starting area to unlock that boss's Forsaken Power: a 300-second buff you trigger with F (default key). After that it goes on a long cooldown, so save it for boss fights, long mining trips, and big building sessions.
Early game essentials
Food is your health bar
You have three food slots, and each one has to hold a different food. Your maximum health and stamina come almost entirely from what you've eaten. Fighting on an empty stomach is the most common way new players die. Eat before every trip. Pair a health-heavy food (cooked meat) with stamina-heavy ones (berries, mushrooms early on), and top up the slots as they run down instead of waiting for them to empty.
Rested and comfort
Sit or sleep near a fire under a roof and you get the Rested buff, which speeds up stamina and health regeneration. It lasts longer the more comfort your base has. Beds, chairs, banners, rugs, and hearths all add comfort, and the buff shows your current comfort level. Before any boss, stand in your best room until the timer is long.
Stamina
Sprinting, jumping, swinging, blocking, and dodging all use stamina, and running out mid-fight is what gets you killed. Good habits:
- Walk around your base instead of sprinting. Stamina only regenerates while you're not spending it.
- Keep one stamina food in your three slots, even in the late game.
- Eikthyr's Forsaken Power cuts run, jump, and swim stamina costs a lot. Use it for long treks.
Base building basics
- Build your first base near the Meadows edge of a Black Forest. You get easy wood and stone, with Black Forest resources nearby.
- A fire needs a vent (a gap in the roof) or smoke will choke you.
- A workbench near structures stops monsters spawning there. Upgrade it for better gear.
- Use portals as soon as you can. Ores and some items can't go through portals, though, so plan to move them by boat or cart.
1. Eikthyr — Meadows
Prepare: A Crude Bow with a stack of arrows, Leather armor, and cooked meat or honey plus berries. Eikthyr is a gentle introduction, so don't overthink it.
Summon: Hunt deer until you have two Deer Trophies. Then place them at Eikthyr's altar, which is marked on your map after you read the runestone near the start.
Fight: He has an antler swipe, a charged lightning beam, and a ground stomp that sends out lightning. Keep your distance, shoot, and move sideways when he winds up. His stomp has a short range, so don't stand right under him. He's immune to stagger, so you can't interrupt him.
Unlock: Hard Antler lets you craft the Antler Pickaxe, and with it you can mine copper and tin. Killing him also makes Greydwarves spawn at night and enables the "The forest is moving…" event, so upgrade your defenses.
2. The Elder — Black Forest
Prepare: Bronze gear from copper plus tin, which you make at the Smelter and Forge. The Smelter needs Surtling Cores, found in Burial Chambers. Wear Troll Leather or Bronze armor. Fire arrows are the key item here. Bring your best Black Forest foods, such as Queens Jam and cooked meat.
Summon: Collect three Ancient Seeds from Burial Chambers and ruins in the Black Forest. A Vegvisir (glowing runestone) in the Burial Chambers marks the altar on your map.
Fight: The Elder spawns hostile roots around the arena, shoots volleys of vines at range, and stomps up close. He takes double damage from fire and is immune to poison, so fire arrows from range are the standard approach. Kill or step away from the roots when they appear, and keep trees and pillars between you and the vine volleys when you need to catch your breath.
Unlock: The Swamp Key opens Sunken Crypts in the Swamp. Those are your source of iron, which comes from Muddy Scrap Piles.
3. Bonemass — Swamp
Prepare: Iron gear and a blunt weapon, such as the Iron Sledge or an Iron Mace. Bring Poison Resistance mead, which is essentially mandatory. Take Bronze or Iron armor, your best health foods, and healing meads.
Summon: Collect ten Withered Bones from Sunken Crypts. Vegvisirs inside the crypts reveal Bonemass's altar.
Fight: He releases a large poison cloud that you can't block, punches for blunt plus poison damage, and throws goop that spawns skeletons or blobs. He's weak to blunt and frost, resists slash, strongly resists fire and pierce, and is immune to poison. So leave the bow and bring a mace or sledge. Clear his adds quickly and back out of the cloud rather than trading hits inside it.
Unlock: The Wishbone pings buried silver veins and treasure, and silver is the Mountains progression metal.
4. Moder — Mountains
Prepare: Silver gear and frost protection: Wolf armor or Frost Resistance mead. Without it, the cold in the Mountains will wear you down. Bring a good bow with plenty of arrows (fire arrows help), plus stamina and health foods.
Summon: Place three Dragon Eggs at her altar in the Mountains. Each egg weighs 200 and can't go through portals. A Megingjord belt from Haldor, the trader, makes carrying them much easier. Build a small shelter with a portal right next to the altar before you summon.
Fight: She bites and claws on the ground. When she's airborne she fires an ice barrage and a tracking frost-breath beam. She's weak to fire and immune to frost. Shoot her while she hovers, dodge sideways through the breath, and use pillars or walls near the altar as cover.
Unlock: Dragon Tears build the Artisan Table, which unlocks key Plains-era crafting stations such as the Spinning Wheel and Windmill.
5. Yagluth — Plains
Prepare: Black Metal gear, made from Black Metal Scrap looted from Fuling villages. Wear Padded armor, which needs Linen from Flax plus Iron. Bring Plains foods and healing meads. Deathsquitos and Fulings hit hard here, so don't go in wearing Mountain-tier armor.
Summon: Take five Fuling Totems from Fuling villages. Stonehenge-style ruins in the Plains lead you to his altar.
Fight: He fires a long fire-and-lightning beam, calls down a meteor volley, and slams a nova that leaves blue fire on the ground. He resists pierce and fire and is immune to poison, but takes normal damage from blunt, slash, frost, lightning, and spirit. Frost arrows or a strong melee weapon both work. Strafe out of the beam and get off the burning ground quickly.
Unlock: Torn Spirit builds the Wisp Fountain, which draws wisps to your base at night. You'll use them to make the Wisplight, which clears the Mistlands fog around you. Without it that biome is close to impossible to navigate.
6. The Queen — Mistlands
Prepare: Wisplight equipped. Wear Carapace armor and use Carapace or Black Metal weapons, or Eitr-based magic if you want to try a mage build. Bring your best Plains and Mistlands foods. A Feather Cape makes the cliffs much less punishing.
Find and summon: Clear Infested Mines. They hold Vegvisirs pointing to the nearest Infested Citadel, plus the fragments you need to craft the Sealbreaker. The Sealbreaker opens the citadel, and on your first visit the Queen is already waiting inside. To refight her later, place three Seeker Soldier trophies on the hive seat.
Fight: She slaps, pierces, bites (the bite poisons you), rushes, spits projectiles that turn into creatures, and calls Seekers and Seeker Broods from the holes around the arena. She can also burrow and teleport. She resists pierce, so arrows are weaker than usual. Take her on in melee or with magic, and clear the brood fast before it builds up. Bring Poison Resistance mead if the bite keeps catching you.
Unlock: Majestic Carapace builds the Artisan Press. Her Forsaken Power boosts Eitr regeneration, which is great for mages.
7. Fader — Ashlands
Prepare: Flametal armor if you can manage it, a stack of Fire Resistance Barley Wine, healing meads, and your best foods. Pack frost, lightning, blunt, or slash weapons. Pierce is halved against him, and fire and spirit do nothing at all.
Find and summon: Charred Fortresses are the key. Their central towers can hold a Vegvisir that marks Fader's coliseum-like arena. Inside, destroy the Bell Altars to collect Bell Fragments. Three fragments make one Bell, and you need three Bells (nine fragments) placed around the arena to summon him.
Fight: Fader is a big dragon with a big move list:
- Fissure: rings of flame that do fire plus spirit damage. You can't block or parry them, so get out.
- Bite, claw and spin: heavy pierce damage up close, with the spin hitting all around him.
- Flamebreath: a long line of fire that leaves flames on the ground.
- Meteors: land in pools of green fire.
- Roar: summons Charred Warriors and Marksmen. Kill the Marksmen first.
- Wall of Fire: traps you in a ring of flame.
Keep your fire resistance up, keep moving, and don't let the adds build up.
Unlock: Kindled Ribs, called Fader Relic before 1.0, are now used to build the Eternal Pyre. His Forsaken Power gives fire resistance, faster adrenaline gain, and less stagger buildup.
8. Kall Fimbulbringer — Deep North
The Deep North stretches across the far north of the map. It has deep snow you'll need to clear with a shovel before you can build, and frozen water that can crack under you. It also adds new dungeons (Winding Tunnels and Mörkhalla) and new enemies, including Krigen and Hexen. Iron Gate recommended a fresh world for 1.0, but existing saves still work.
Prepare: Treat this as endgame content. Wear Ashlands-tier or better armor, plus the new Deep North sets once you can craft them. You'll need frost protection, your top three foods (weighted toward health, with one strong stamina food), and healing, stamina, and resistance meads. Important new materials include Bloodgold, Frostcore, and Liquid Frost, and you'll use the new Frost Foundry. Set up a forward outpost with a portal, workbench, bed, and chest.
The summoning chain is the longest in the game. You repeat it three times:
- Clear a Winding Tunnels dungeon to find an Intricate Key Mould.
- Craft an Intricate Key. The mould plus 5 Bloodgold go into the Black Forge, then you finish the key at the Frost Foundry.
- Use the key on a Mörkhalla gate, go all the way down, and break the malice ice at the bottom with a pickaxe. This starts a Jotun Invasion in one of your earlier biomes, marked on the map.
- Travel to the marker, defeat the invaders, and break the Black Ice Core to get one Malicious Blood.
With three Malicious Blood, go to the Aesir Passage and offer them at the Strange Bowl. That opens the way to The Prison, where Kall is held.
Fight: Kall resists pierce, fire, frost, and lightning, and he's completely immune to spirit. Bring blunt or slash: a top-tier sledge or greatsword. The fight has three phases:
- Chains: he fights with his chains, slamming, sweeping, whirling, and rushing. Hit him in short bursts, then back off to recover stamina.
- Aspects: he calls up Aspects of the earlier Forsaken, and you can't damage him until every one of them is dead. Focus on one at a time.
- Enraged: his chains now add fire and frost damage, and he gains a rain of spikes plus tendrils that root to the ground. Keep dodging, and burn down the tendrils when they trap you.
Tip: Place a portal near the Aesir Passage before you offer the blood. It's a long fight, and running back from home after a death is not something you want to do in the Deep North.
Unlock: Sacrificial Blood goes on the Sacrificial Stones in the Meadows to complete the game's ending. The Crown Jewel plus 5 Bloodgold at a level 4 Black Forge makes the Crown of Valheim, which adds armor and movement speed and cuts stamina use for attacks, running, swimming, and sneaking.
General boss tips
- Match your damage type to the boss. Fire for the Elder and Moder, blunt for Bonemass, and no spirit damage against Fader or Kall.
- Drink the matching resistance mead before summoning: poison for Bonemass, frost for Moder, fire for Fader.
- Build a small shelter near the altar with a bed or portal, a fire, and a chest of spare gear.
- Stack Rested, full food, and the previous boss's Forsaken Power before every attempt.
- In multiplayer, most bosses drop their unlock item per player, but check before splitting the loot.
For exact numbers (damage, health, resistances), the Valheim Wiki is kept up to date, and the official Valheim news page has the patch notes.
Quick checklist
- Three different foods eaten, Rested active, gear repaired.
- Right damage type and the matching resistance mead for this boss.
- Portal and small shelter next to the altar or arena.
- Summon items in hand: 2 Deer Trophies, 3 Ancient Seeds, 10 Withered Bones, 3 Dragon Eggs, 5 Fuling Totems, a Sealbreaker, 3 Bells, 3 Malicious Blood.
- Hang each trophy on the Sacrificial Stones and use Forsaken Powers when they matter.
- Collect the unlock drop and move to the next biome's gear tier before the next boss.
