A practical survival guide for The Long Dark: how the needs and conditions work, what to do on your first days, which region to start in, how to handle wolves and bears, crafting and skill progression, and notes on WINTERMUTE now that the story is complete.

Researched September 2026 — current as of Survival v2.55 / Episode Five v2.54 / WINTERMUTE v2.24 (hotfix of 23 April 2026). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Where the Game Is Now

  • WINTERMUTE is finished. Episode Five: The Light at the End of All Things launched on 31 March 2026 as a free update, completing the five-episode story. You play as Mackenzie and Astrid, and the episode explains the aurora.
  • Survival and Story are separate apps. Since 2023 the game ships Survival and WINTERMUTE as separate executables. Old pre-2023 story saves only show up in the Episode 1–4 executable.
  • Tales from the Far Territory (paid DLC) arrived in six parts from 5 December 2022 (Forsaken Airfield, Signal Void, Frontier Comforts, Buried Echoes, Last Horizon); its final part, Broken Silence, came out on 2 December 2024.
  • What's next: Hinterland's August 2026 dev diary says post-Episode Five work is "all about Survival". Nothing concrete is dated yet.

Quick Start

  • Pick Pilgrim or Voyageur for your first run. Pilgrim has passive wildlife; Voyageur is the intended "learning" difficulty. Stalker is hard, Interloper and Misery are brutal.
  • Start in Mystery Lake. Camp Office, the Trapper's Homestead and the Dam give you shelter, loot and a forgiving layout.
  • Watch the status bars: Cold, Fatigue, Thirst, Hunger. When any bar empties, your Condition (health) drains. Condition is what kills you.
  • Water is easy, calories are not. Boil snow over a fire (melt → boil) for safe water. Food is the long-term problem, so learn to hunt early.
  • Every action costs calories and time. Searching, harvesting, crafting and walking all burn time. Plan trips in daylight.
  • Keep your weight down. Past your carry limit (30 kg base) you are encumbered: you move slower, tire faster and can't sprint. Low condition and exhaustion reduce what you can carry.
  • Always carry a light source and a way to start fire. Matches, a lighter or a Magnifying Lens plus tinder and fuel.
  • Sleep in shelter. Beds and bedrolls give warmth bonuses. Sleeping outside without shelter in a blizzard can kill you.
  • Use the map system: you draw your map with charcoal from a burnt-out fire. Map lookout spots from high ground.
  • Save = sleep or transition. Survival has permadeath and saves automatically when you sleep, pass time, or change region.

Needs and Conditions

Meter | What drains it | How to fix it

Cold (Warmth) | Low temperature, wind, wet clothes | Clothing, fires, shelter, hot drinks

Fatigue | Time awake, heavy loads, running | Sleep, coffee/tea for a short boost

Thirst | Time, exertion | Boiled water, tea, soda

Hunger / Calories | Every action | Meat, canned food, MREs, fish, peanut butter

Condition | Any meter at zero, injuries, afflictions | Rest, fix the cause

Common Afflictions

Affliction | Cause | Treatment

Hypothermia | Staying freezing for hours | Stay warm and rest for many hours; Hot drinks help

Frostbite | Exposure on body parts | Permanent condition loss; prevent it with good clothing

Food Poisoning | Spoiled food, raw meat | Antibiotics or Reishi tea, then rest

Dysentery | Unsafe water, dirty conditions | Antibiotics/Reishi tea plus lots of water and rest

Sprained Ankle / Wrist | Falls, steep slopes, struggles | Painkillers or Rose Hip tea for the pain, then rest to heal

Infection Risk | Fresh wound (animal attack, cuts) | Disinfect with Antiseptic or an Old Man's Beard Wound Dressing before it turns into Infection

Infection | Infection Risk left untreated | Antibiotics or Reishi tea, then rest

Blood Loss | Animal attack | Bandage or Old Man's Beard

Cabin Fever | Too much time indoors over many days | Spend more time outdoors and sleep outside (snow shelter or bedroll) until the risk clears

Intestinal Parasites | Too much bear or wolf meat | Take Reishi tea or antibiotics daily for several days

Plant cures: Reishi mushrooms (tea, antibiotics), Rose Hips (tea, painkillers), Old Man's Beard (wound dressings), and Cattails (food and tinder).

Difficulty Settings

Mode | Summary

Pilgrim | Wildlife won't attack. Learn the maps.

Voyageur | Balanced intro to the full game.

Stalker | Aggressive wildlife, scarcer loot.

Interloper | Very little loot, no guns in most places, extreme cold. You craft almost everything.

Misery | Harder than Interloper with extra debuffs.

Custom | Tune every setting yourself.

You can also enable Cheat Death in Survival, which lets you avoid permadeath at a cost (a lasting penalty to your run).

Regions

Survival has more than 12 major regions plus connecting transition zones. A starter-friendly list:

Region | Why go

Mystery Lake | Best start: Camp Office, Trapper's Homestead, Dam, many huts

Coastal Highway | Fishing huts, Quonset Garage, lots of houses

Pleasant Valley | Farmhouse and Community Hall; open and windy

Desolation Point | One of the forges (in the Hibernia Processing building)

Forlorn Muskeg | Big, flat marsh with thin ice; good for Cattails and fishing

Broken Railroad | The other classic forge (Maintenance Yard)

Mountain Town | Milton: many houses, Grey Mother's house

Timberwolf Mountain | Climb to the summit and find the plane cargo

Hushed River Valley | Remote and dangerous

Bleak Inlet | Cannery, big loot, many timberwolves

Ash Canyon | Climbing and a steep map; late-game region

Blackrock | Prison region with strong loot and timberwolves

Far Territory regions (DLC) | Forsaken Airfield, Far Range Branch Line, Transfer Pass, Zone of Contamination, Sundered Pass

Your First Days

Day 1

  • Look around for your spawn location and find the nearest building.
  • Loot everything: drawers, cabinets, bodies, cars. Take matches, food, water, clothing and tools.
  • Make a fire indoors if possible (stoves) and boil water. Store water in a Water Bottle or Mason jar.
  • Sleep in the building. Don't stumble around at night.

Days 2–5

  • Clothing: Swap to layered, dry clothes. Wool and fleece beat cotton. Harvest cloth from clothing you won't wear.
  • Tools: A Hatchet (firewood from limbs) and a Hunting Knife (carcasses) are huge; a Hacksaw harvests scrap metal. The Prybar opens locked containers.
  • Water supply: Stockpile a few litres at base.
  • Food plan: Snares for rabbits (found or crafted), fishing at ice-fishing huts, and scavenged food.

Days 5+

  • Hunting: A Hunting Rifle or bow lets you take deer. One deer carcass is many kilograms of meat. Carcass harvesting in the cold is slow, so bring a fire.
  • Curing: Guts and hides take days to cure indoors. Start curing early so you can make bows, snares and hide clothing later.

Wildlife

Animal | Behaviour | How to deal with it

Rabbits | Harmless | Throw stones or snare them

Deer | Flee | Rifle or bow; hit the chest

Wolves | Stalk and attack | Face them, aim, fire; a lit Flare or Torch scares them; drop meat to distract

Timberwolves | Packs in some regions | Face the pack leader, use flares, don't run

Bears | Charge from range | Rifle to the head or retreat to a building

Moose | Charge if close | Avoid; very dangerous

Cougar | Territorial ambush predator (free Survival addition, June 2024) | Stay out of its territory until you're equipped

The struggle: When a wolf attacks, you get a mini-game. Mash the attack input to fight it off. A Hatchet or Knife equipped helps.

Crafting and Skills

  • Workbench: Craft snares, bows, arrows, improvised tools and hide/gut clothing.
  • Forge: Make arrowheads, knives and hatchets from scrap metal. You need Coal and a Hammer. The classic forge locations are Desolation Point and Broken Railroad.
  • Skills (level 1 to 5) include Archery, Carcass Harvesting, Cooking, Fire Starting, Gunsmithing, Ice Fishing, Mending, Revolver, and Rifle. Higher levels mean faster work and fewer failures.
  • Research books raise skills if you read them for hours. They're a great use of bad-weather days.

Feats

Feats are permanent perks you unlock across saves by reaching milestones (for example, Book Smarts, Cold Fusion, Efficient Machine, Fire Master, Free Runner, Snow Walker, Expert Trapper, Straight to Heart, Blizzard Walker). You pick a limited number at the start of a new run.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Running everywhere. Sprinting burns calories and fatigue fast. Walk unless a wolf is on you.
  • Drinking unboiled water. Dysentery wrecks a run. Boil everything unless it comes sealed.
  • Hoarding everything. You'll hit the weight limit and burn calories. Store heavy items at a base.
  • Travelling in a blizzard. Visibility and warmth drop sharply. Wait it out indoors.
  • Eating too much wolf or bear meat. It can give you parasites.
  • Walking on thin ice. Cracking sounds mean go back. Falling through soaks your clothes.
  • Ignoring clothing repair. Worn clothes lose warmth. Mend them with cloth or leather.

Advanced Tips

  • Base in a spot with a stove and a bed. Camp Office (Mystery Lake), the Quonset Garage (Coastal Highway), and the Trapper's Homestead are classic bases.
  • Run a rotating food supply. Hunt deer, cook in batches, and store meat outside in the cold, where it spoils more slowly.
  • Cure hides early. Deer and wolf hides take days, but the clothing they make (Deerskin Pants, Wolfskin Coat, Bearskin Coat) is among the warmest in the game.
  • Craft a Snow Shelter in the wilderness: it's a warm place to sleep without walls.
  • Use Charcoal to map. Burnt-out fires leave charcoal; survey from high points to fill in the map.
  • Aurora nights: during an aurora, some electronics and doors come back on, and wildlife may behave differently. Stay alert.

WINTERMUTE Notes

  • Story mode has five episodes: Episodes One and Two (2017, remade as "Redux" in 2018), Three (Crossroads Elegy, October 2019), Four (Fury, Then Silence, 2021) and Five (The Light at the End of All Things, 2026).
  • Episode Five is free for anyone who owns THE LONG DARK. If you already own it, just update.
  • Story saves from before the 2023 split only appear in the Episode 1–4 executable. Episode Five known issue (April 2026): avoid loading checkpoint saves in the Suzuki Facility bunk room section.

FAQ

What difficulty should I start on? Voyageur. Pilgrim is great for learning maps, but the wildlife is passive, so it doesn't teach you combat.

What's the best starting region? Mystery Lake. It has several safe bases, a lot of loot, and easy connections to Coastal Highway and Forlorn Muskeg.

How do I avoid dying to wolves? Carry a Flare or Torch, face wolves instead of running, and keep your Hatchet or Knife equipped when walking in wolf territory.

How do I cure food poisoning? Take antibiotics or drink Reishi Tea, then rest.

Is Episode Five free? Yes. It released on 31 March 2026 as a free update to THE LONG DARK.

Do I need Tales from the Far Territory? No, but it adds the new regions and systems many players consider essential for long Survival runs.

Why can't I see my old story save? Saves made before the 2023 Survival/Story split only show up in the Episode 1–4 executable.
