Everything a new or returning player needs for Team Fortress 2: the nine classes, game modes, key unlocks, Medic and Engineer fundamentals, settings, economy basics, and what the 2026 updates added.
Researched September 2026 — current as of the Summer 2026 update (July 7, 2026) and its follow-up hotfixes through mid-July. Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.
Quick Start
- Pick a class that fits the moment, not your favorite. TF2 is a team game first. If your team has no Medic, playing Medic will win more games than a fourth Sniper.
- Stay near your Medic and your team. Most new-player deaths come from wandering alone into a Spy, a sentry, or a flank.
- Watch the objective, not the kill feed. Payload carts, control points, and the intelligence decide rounds. Standing on the point or pushing the cart counts.
- Call for Medic with E when hurt, and grab health kits and ammo packs; resupply cabinets in spawn refill everything instantly.
- Airblast, spy-check, and listen. Spies are everywhere in casual. Bump into teammates who behave oddly, and Pyros should puff flames at corners.
- Unlocks are sidegrades, not upgrades. Stock weapons are strong. Get alternatives from random drops, achievements, crafting, or trading, but you never need them to compete.
- Turn on hit sounds and damage numbers in Advanced Options. Knowing when and how much you hit is huge for learning.
- Free accounts are limited. Free-to-play accounts have restrictions (smaller backpack, no trading, and chat limits). Any purchase in the Mann Co. Store upgrades you to Premium permanently.
What's New in 2026
- Summer 2026 update (July 7, 2026): six new community maps (Dryfield, Camp Saxton, Shorelight, Redwood, Premuda, and Mojave), a Summer 2026 Cosmetic Case with 24 community items, a Summer 2026 War Paint Case with 10 War Paints, four new taunts in the Mann Co. Store (The Circuit Breaker, Buffoon's Bivouac, Faux-calization, Friendly Fire), and 12 new Unusual effects (7 hat, 5 taunt). The summer event ran July 8 to September 15, 2026.
- Follow-up patches (July 8–16): fixes to koth_dryfield, cp_premuda, pl_redwood (zipline and optimization), and koth_dusker, plus cosmetic and Unusual fixes. One Unusual effect was renamed to "Polar Prism."
- No weapon balance changes landed in 2026 so far; the updates were content, bug fixes, security, and stability (including a March 2026 fix for faked system messages and memory leaks).

Casual matchmaking is 12v12. Valve's Competitive mode is 6v6; community leagues play 6s (6v6) and Highlander (one of each class, 9v9).
Core Mechanics
- Random crits: stock weapons have a chance to crit, influenced by recent damage. Community servers and competitive formats often disable them.
- Overheal: Medics can heal you above max HP (up to 150 percent); it decays over time.
- Afterburn and bleed: Pyro fire keeps burning until it runs out or you extinguish it: water, a health kit, a friendly Pyro's airblast, Mad Milk or Jarate, or about a full second of continuous healing from a Medic, Dispenser, or Payload cart.
- Rocket and sticky jumping: Soldiers and Demomen trade health for mobility. Jump plus crouch (crouch-jump) before firing rockets at your feet for maximum height.
- Backstabs kill instantly from behind. Headshots from the Sniper Rifle and Huntsman crit.
- ÜberCharge: the Medi Gun builds charge while healing (faster when healing hurt teammates). Stock Über grants invulnerability; each Medi Gun unlock offers a different charge effect.
Class Fundamentals
Medic
- Heal priority: your pocket (Soldier/Demo), then whoever is taking fire. Tap-heal overhealed players for quick Über build.
- Don't hover in the open. Hide behind your patient and corners. Use the Crusader's Crossbow for long-range heals.
- Call your Über. Pop it when a push starts or to save yourself and your patient, not after you're already dead. If the enemy Medic pops, back off until it ends.
- Pick your Medi Gun: Stock for pushing sentries, Kritzkrieg for burst damage with a Soldier/Demo/Heavy, Quick-Fix for mobility (follows rocket jumps), Vaccinator for countering a specific damage type (advanced).
Engineer
- Build in order: sentry, dispenser, teleporter entrance and exit. Hit buildings with the wrench to upgrade (Level 3 sentry adds rockets).
- Place sentries behind corners so attackers must walk into range, not where a Sniper or Demo can hit them from afar.
- Collect metal from ammo packs and dropped weapons; the dispenser generates metal too.
- The Wrangler lets you aim the sentry (and shields it) — essential against Demomen spamming from range. The Rescue Ranger can repair from range and teleport buildings.
- The Gunslinger swaps your sentry for the fast-building Combat Mini-Sentry, great on offense.
Spy
- Disguise as a class the enemy team actually has, and walk like it. Don't run straight toward enemies.
- Sap sentries and stab the Engineer, or trade a backstab on the Medic — that often wins the fight.
- The Dead Ringer fakes your death; Cloak and Dagger lets you wait invisibly while stationary.
Soldier and Demoman
- Soldier: aim rockets at feet and floors for splash, not at bodies in the air (unless you are practicing airshots). The Buff Banner turns a push into mini-crits for your whole group.
- Demoman: stickybombs are the best tool for destroying sentry nests and holding points. Set traps on the point, detonate when multiple enemies stand on it.
Heavy and Pyro
- Heavy: stay close to cover and your Medic; you are slow and a Sniper magnet. Drop the Sandvich (Mouse2) for teammates in a pinch.
- Pyro: airblast reflects rockets, grenades, and arrows, extinguishes teammates, and pushes Übered enemies off points. Ambush from corners rather than chasing.
Sniper and Scout
- Sniper: body shots with charged damage still hurt; aim at head height and pre-aim chokepoints. The Razorback blocks one backstab; Jarate reveals Spies and makes targets take mini-crits.
- Scout: use your double jump to dodge, harass the enemy Medic and Sniper, and cap points (you count as two cappers).
Items, Crafting, and Economy
- Drops: you earn random item drops while playing on official and many community servers, capped weekly.
- Crafting basics: two duplicate weapons (or two weapons for the same class) smelt into Scrap Metal; three Scrap make one Reclaimed Metal; three Reclaimed make one Refined Metal. Refined, keys, and Unusuals are the core trading currencies.
- Mann Co. Supply Crate Keys open cases like the Summer 2026 Cosmetic Case; the contents are cosmetic only.
- Premium vs free: free accounts cannot initiate trades and have a smaller backpack; spending money once lifts these limits.
Mann vs. Machine Quick Tips
- Spend credits on cash collection and primary damage/firing speed early. Medics benefit from shield and heal-rate upgrades.
- A Scout has an extra-large cash pickup radius and gets health boosts from collected cash (credits are shared, not bonus); someone should always grab the cash before it disappears.
- Target the Tank with high-DPS classes and focus giant robots with crits or Kritzkrieg.
- Mann Up mode uses Tour of Duty tickets and can award rare items; Boot Camp is free.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Stacking Snipers and Spies on a team with no Medic or frontline.
- Chasing kills away from the objective. Especially on Payload: if nobody is on the cart, it isn't moving.
- Walking in front of your own Engineer's sentry line of fire when a Spy could be behind you — spy-check teammates who block or skip calling for Medic.
- Using Über too late. A Medic who dies with full charge lost the fight for the team.
- Ignoring health packs because a Medic "should" heal you. Medics can't be everywhere.
- Building sentries in open sightlines where any Soldier or Demo can destroy them from outside range.
- Rocket jumping into the enemy team alone without a plan or a Medic.
Advanced Tips
- Track Über advantage. When your Medic has Über and theirs doesn't, push. When theirs just popped, retreat and stall.
- Learn spawn times and "forward spawn" points. After capturing a point, defenders' spawn often moves back, giving you a push window.
- Market Gardener: Soldiers get crits with it while rocket jumping — practice on jump maps before using it in matches.
- Stickybomb and rocket jump maps (community jump servers) and tr_walkway (bots for aim practice) are the fastest ways to build mechanics.
- Stock vs unlock by matchup: Direct Hit versus fliers and sentries at range; Degreaser for fast weapon switching combos (Flare Gun or Axtinguisher); Vaccinator only when you can read the enemy composition.
- Competitive: 6s centers on Scouts, Soldiers, Demo, and Medic; Highlander requires one of each class so every role's fundamentals matter.
- Crouch-jump everywhere as a Soldier/Demo, and strafe unpredictably against Snipers.
