This guide covers Rocket League from your first match to ranked play: controls and settings, the core mechanics to practice, rotation and positioning, ranks and playlists, what's new in Season 24, and how the item economy works.
Researched September 2026 — current as of Season 24 (v2.76, launched September 23, 2026, and expected to run until around late December 2026). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.
Quick Start
- Rocket League is free to play. Progression, ranked, and most modes are free. The Rocket Pass Premium and Item Shop are the paid parts, and they're cosmetic only.
- Hitboxes matter, not the car's look. Every car uses one of six hitboxes: Octane, Dominus, Plank, Breakout, Hybrid, Merc. Pick one, and stick with it while you learn. The Octane and Fennec (Octane hitbox) are the most popular.
- Turn up the camera settings. Most players raise the camera distance and field of view, and use ball cam most of the time. Settings are listed below.
- Learn to jump and flip before anything else. Most early goals come from clean contact, not fancy mechanics.
- Don't chase the ball. Rotation (taking turns attacking and defending) wins more games than mechanics in low and mid ranks.
- Collect small boost pads. Grabbing big boosts pulls you out of position. Small pads keep you in the play.
- Play Free Play and Training Packs. Ten minutes of Free Play before each session builds car control faster than matches alone.
- Use the Season 24 Free Look camera if you play on keyboard and mouse. It's new this season and comes with new keyboard and mouse control defaults.
- Mute toxic players and ignore quick chat spam. Tilt costs more games than any mechanic.
Controls
Default bindings (you can remap everything):
Action | Controller (Xbox) | Controller (PlayStation)
Throttle | RT | R2
Reverse / brake | LT | L2
Jump | A | Cross
Boost | B | Circle
Powerslide | X | Square
Ball cam toggle | Y | Triangle
Air roll | X (held in the air) | Square (held in the air)
Common rebinds used by many players:
- Boost on RB (R1) so you can boost and jump at the same time more easily.
- Powerslide and Air Roll on LB (L1) or a separate Air Roll Left/Right.
- Directional air roll (Air Roll Left and Air Roll Right) on separate buttons for advanced aerial control.
Keyboard and mouse
Season 24 added a Free Look camera with updated default mouse and keyboard controls, plus an optional center dot reticle to support the new camera movement. Controller players can enable Free Look too. If you already play on keyboard and mouse, check your binds after the update.
Camera and Video Settings
Most players use settings in these ranges. Tune them to taste.
Setting | Common range
Field of View | 110 (max)
Distance | 260 to 280
Height | 90 to 110
Angle | -3 to -5
Stiffness | 0.40 to 0.50
Swivel Speed | 4 to 6
Transition Speed | 1.0 to 1.5
Camera Shake | Off
For video settings, play at the highest steady frame rate your system allows. Turn off motion blur and heavy effects to keep things clear.
Core Mechanics to Practice
Learn them in about this order:
- Powerslide turns: tighter turns and quick recoveries.
- Front flip and diagonal flip: fastest way to hit the ball hard and to speed up without boost.
- Half-flip: flip backward, then cancel the flip and air roll to face forward. It's the fastest way to turn around.
- Speed flip: a diagonal flip with a flip cancel, used for the fastest kickoffs.
- Aerials: jump, tilt back, boost, and control your car to meet the ball in the air.
- Fast aerials: jump, boost, and do a second jump quickly to reach high balls faster.
- Wave dash: land with a flip for a burst of speed.
- Dribbling and flicks: carry the ball on your car's roof and flick it past defenders.
- Air dribbles, ceiling shots, and flip resets: high-rank mechanics. Save them for later.
Training tip: Use custom Training Packs (search by code in the Training menu) for specific shots, saves, or aerials. Rotate between a few packs each session.
Kickoffs
- The speed flip kickoff is the fastest option once you learn it.
- In 2v2 and 3v3, the player on the left side (from the diagonal spawn) usually goes for the ball when two players are on diagonals.
- The second player grabs corner boost or cheats up (moves slightly forward for a follow-up).
- The third player (in 3v3) grabs back boost and stays ready.
Rotation and Positioning
Rotation is how a team takes turns so someone is always attacking and someone is always covering.
- Rotate back post. When you go back to defend, drive toward the far post from the ball, not straight into your net.
- Don't double commit. If a teammate is going for the ball, stay back or position for a follow-up.
- First man, second man, third man (3v3):
- First man challenges the ball.
- Second man is ready to follow up or grab a pass.
- Third man stays back as the last defender and collects boost.
- In 2v2, it's first man and second man. The second man is also the last defender, so play safer.
- Shadow defense: when retreating, drive in front of the attacker but between them and your net. Wait for them to make a mistake instead of diving in.
Playlists and Ranks
Competitive playlists:
- Duel (1v1)
- Doubles (2v2)
- Standard (3v3)
- Extra Modes (ranked): Hoops, Rumble, Dropshot, Snow Day
- Tournaments: scheduled competitive brackets with rewards
Rank order: Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond, Champion, Grand Champion, and Supersonic Legend. Each rank below Supersonic Legend has three tiers and divisions within them.
Season 24 ranked additions:
- Finishing in the Top 100 of any Soccar ranked leaderboard (1v1, 2v2, or 3v3) earns an exclusive Title based on your placement, awarded at the end of the season.
Seasonal rewards are earned by winning matches at or above a rank during the season. Check the in-game Competitive tab for the current requirements.

Season 24 Rocket Pass includes new cars plus wheels, boosts, and decals. Check each car's hitbox in the garage before you switch; the reported line-up is the Volkswagen Golf GTI Edition 50, Dominus GT 76, and Pareto 5S (confirm names and hitboxes in-game).
Events this season include Run It Up (from launch, with 14 challenges and the Nova Collection), Bullet Ball (from launch), the Persona 5 crossover (from September 25), and a Rocket Rivalry event.
Item Economy
- Rocket Pass: free tiers plus a Premium track bought with Credits. Premium tiers include cars and cosmetic rewards.
- Item Shop: rotates daily and weekly cosmetics for Credits.
- Credits are the premium currency, bought with real money.
- Blueprints are gone; the Item Shop is the main way to buy specific items. Trading between players was removed in December 2023, so you can't trade items with other players.
- Black Market Trade-Ins (Season 24) are a new way to turn duplicate Black Market items into a different one.
Everything you can buy is cosmetic. Hitboxes don't change with paid cars, so paying doesn't give an advantage.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Ball chasing. If you and a teammate go for the same ball, you've both left the net.
- Boost starving. Using all your boost on the way to the ball means you have nothing left for the play. Collect small pads.
- Going for every 50/50. Sometimes waiting and shadowing is better than challenging.
- Rotating ball side. Rotating in front of the play blocks your teammates and leaves the far post open.
- Spending all your time on fancy mechanics. At low and mid ranks, clean hits and good rotation matter more.
- Blaming teammates. It costs focus and rarely changes anything.
Advanced Tips
- Learn to read your opponents' boost and pressure them when they're low.
- Use demos to clear defenders or stop rotations, especially in 3v3. Don't chase demos so hard that you leave the play.
- Practice recoveries. Landing on your wheels and getting back into play fast is a huge skill gap.
- Take small breaks between ranked matches to avoid tilt.
- Review your replays to see where you were out of position.
- Use the in-game Training Packs for specific skills like shadow defense, saves, and air rolls.
- Try Honor Duels after regular matches to get extra 1v1 reps against players at your level.
