A practical guide to Blasphemous: combat fundamentals, upgrades, the best prayers, beads and relics, a route through Cvstodia, boss tips, the three free DLCs, and what you need for the true ending.

Researched September 2026 — current as of the final PC build with all three free DLCs (The Stir of Dawn, Strife and Ruin, Wounds of Eventide) and the October 2025 Unity security patch. Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

What You're Playing

Blasphemous (The Game Kitchen, 2019) is a 2D soulslike metroidvania set in Cvstodia, a land cursed by The Miracle. You play The Penitent One, armed with the sword Mea Culpa. Three free DLC updates added New Game+, crossover content, boss rush, and a third ending that leads into Blasphemous II (2023).

Free update | Released | Adds

The Stir of Dawn | Aug 4, 2020 | New Game+ with Penitences, the Amanecidas boss fights, Jibrael's questline, Spanish dub

Strife and Ruin | Feb 18, 2021 | Bloodstained crossover (help Miriam escape), Boss Rush, challenge rooms, render mode options

Wounds of Eventide | Dec 9, 2021 | The largest update: new bosses, NPCs, quests, items, and Ending C, which sets up Blasphemous II

Everything is included on Steam at no extra cost. Update the game if you haven't. Team17 pushed a Unity security fix in October 2025.

Quick Start

  • Parry is your best defensive tool. A good parry opens most enemies to a riposte. Learn the timing early.
  • Dodge through attacks. The slide has invincibility frames, so use it through sweeps and projectiles.
  • Bile Flasks heal. Find more empty flasks, and collect Quicksilver to upgrade how much each sip heals.
  • Tears of Atonement are your currency. Spend them on sword skills at Mea Culpa altars and at shops. Don't sit on them.
  • Dying leaves a Guilt Fragment where you died. Guilt lowers your maximum Fervour until you recover the fragment (or pay Tears to have it absolved), so go back for it.
  • Prie Dieu altars are checkpoints. They refill flasks and respawn enemies.
  • Equip Rosary Beads. They're your passive stat and utility slots and the easiest power boost.
  • Talk to every NPC more than once. Many questlines are missable and progress between visits.
  • Pick up the Incorrupt Hand of the Fraternal Master relic in Albero. It points out hidden secrets and makes exploring much less frustrating.

Combat Fundamentals

  • Light combos are safe. Charged heavy attacks and the sword skills you buy at Mea Culpa altars add burst damage.
  • Executions trigger on staggered enemies. Execute whenever you see the prompt: it's safe damage, invincible, and restores Fervour.
  • Fervour (the blue bar) fuels Prayers. Build it by hitting enemies. The Crown of Gnawed Iron bead raises Fervour gain.
  • Parry and riposte beats most humanoid enemies and many boss attacks. Red-flash or unblockable moves have to be dodged.
  • Health (HP) upgrades come from Life Upgrades found around the map. Fervour upgrades come from specific altars and items.

Sword Hearts (Mea Culpa Hearts)

Sword Hearts are equippable hearts that change how Mea Culpa behaves, usually with a trade-off. You can only equip one at a time. Pick them up as you explore and swap them for specific bosses.

Prayers (Best Picks)

Prayers use Fervour. Here are some of the strongest and most useful, with where the Fextralife wiki places them:

Prayer | Effect | Where

Verdiales of the Forsaken Hamlet | Wave that travels along floors and walls | The Holy Line (your first prayer)

Tiento to your Thorned Hairs | Temporary invincibility | Albero (Cleofas's quest)

Debla of the Lights | Heavenly beam that also boosts strength | Lvdovico's quest

Taranto to My Sister | Three lightning bolts | Bridges of the Three Calvaries (boss drop)

Solea of Excommunication | Huge melee blow | Jondo (needs Three Gnarled Tongues equipped)

Seguiriya to your Eyes like Stars | Temporary attack speed boost | Mercy Dreams

Zarabanda of the Safe Haven | Projectile that destroys enemy projectiles | Viridiana's quest

Zambra to the Resplendent Crown | More Tears from kills (farming) | Desecrated Cistern (needs Nail Uprooted from Dirt)

Mirabras of the Return to Port | Teleport to a recently used Prie Dieu | Echoes of Salt

Campanillero to the Sons of the Aurora | Cherub summons that attack | Free all 38 Children of Moonlight

Aubade of the Nameless Guardian | Summons four warriors to fight with you | Defeat all Amanecidas

Prayers are boosted by the Drop of Coagulated Ink bead (more prayer power, found in the Library of the Negated Words).

Rosary Beads (Most Useful)

Bead | Effect | Where

Immaculate Bead | Enters Confessor Statue portals; needed for the true ending | Graveyard of the Peaks

Crown of Gnawed Iron | +50% Fervour gain from attacks | Brotherhood of the Silent Sorrow

Pelican Effigy | Invulnerable while drinking a Bile Flask | Jondo

Knot of Hair | More strength | Grievance Ascends

Silver Grape | Much better defense | Desecrated Cistern

Consecrated Amethyst | Strong magic resistance | Mother of Mothers

Frozen Olive | More defense at low health | Where Olive Trees Wither

Dove Skull | More defense | Albero

Reliquary of the Fervent Heart | Constant Fervour regeneration | New Game+ (Unwavering Faith Penitence reward)

Collect Knots of Rosary Rope to open more bead slots, up to 8.

Relics (Traversal)

You can equip three at a time. Swap them as areas demand.

Relic | Use | Where

Blood Perpetuated in Sand | Turns red motes into platforms | Brotherhood of the Silent Sorrow

Incorrupt Hand of the Fraternal Master | Reveals secrets | Albero

Shroud of Dreamt Sins | Read corpses' memories (lore, some quests) | Albero

Three Gnarled Tongues | Turns roots into bridges and climbable surfaces | Albero

Linen of Golden Thread | Survive bottomless pits | The Sleeping Canvases

Nail Uprooted from Dirt | Walk through mud and water without slowing | Mother of Mothers

Silvered Lung of Dolphos | Protection from toxic areas | Grievance Ascends

Route Through Cvstodia

Cvstodia is non-linear, but a smooth order that the Fextralife walkthrough follows is:

  • Brotherhood of the Silent Sorrow (tutorial, boss: Warden of the Silent Sorrow)
  • The Holy Line
  • Albero (hub village, key NPCs and relics)
  • Wasteland of the Buried Churches
  • Mercy Dreams (Ten Piedad)
  • Desecrated Cistern
  • Where Olive Trees Wither
  • Graveyard of the Peaks (Immaculate Bead)
  • Convent of Our Lady of the Charred Visage (Our Lady of the Charred Visage)
  • Mountains of the Endless Dusk
  • Jondo
  • Grievance Ascends (Tres Angustias)
  • The Bridges of the Three Calvaries (Esdras, of the Anointed Legion)
  • Patio of the Silent Steps
  • Mother of Mothers (Melquiades, the Exhumed Archbishop)

After that come the late-game areas (including the Library of the Negated Words, the Sleeping Canvases, and the Archcathedral Rooftops) leading to Crisanta of the Wrapped Agony and the final confrontation with His Holiness Escribar.

Boss Tips

Boss | Tip

Warden of the Silent Sorrow | Tutorial boss. Learn to dodge the slam and punish after

Ten Piedad | Stay near his legs, dodge the stomps, and back off when he charges the ground attack

Tres Angustias | Parry and block. Two sisters' spear beams can be parried. In phase two, hit during the shadow form, then dash away from the big vertical beam. Perpetua's Protection helps against lightning

Esdras | Aggressive melee. Parry his strikes and don't greed after his combos

Melquiades | Mostly projectiles. Keep moving and punish between volleys

Our Lady of the Charred Visage | Watch the fire patterns, stay mobile, and hit her when she's exposed

Crisanta | A true skill check. Parry-heavy, with a very punishing late phase

Escribar | Final boss of the base story. Bring max flasks and a defensive bead setup

DLC bosses such as Laudes, the First of the Amanecidas and the other Amanecidas (Bejeweled Arrow, Chiseled Steel, Golden Blades, Molten Thorn), Isidora, Voice of the Dead, Quirce, Returned by the Flames, and Exposito, Scion of Abjuration are the hardest fights in the game. Beating all the Amanecidas rewards the Aubade of the Nameless Guardian prayer.

Endings (spoiler-light)

  • Ending B: finish the game normally, without doing the true ending steps.
  • Ending A (true ending): find the Immaculate Bead, equip it and die three times to get the Weight of True Guilt, destroy all 7 Confessor Statues and complete their trials, then defeat His Holiness Escribar.
  • Ending C (Wounds of Eventide): builds on the late-game content added by that update and leads into Blasphemous II. Look up the exact steps after your first ending. They include several missable actions.

Keep a manual note of NPC questlines. Several of them (Viridiana, Cleofas, Lvdovico, and others) change or end depending on when you visit and what you've done.

New Game+ and Penitences

The Stir of Dawn added New Game+. You keep much of your gear, and you can pick a Penitence, an optional handicap with a reward. Completing Unwavering Faith, for example, rewards the Reliquary of the Fervent Heart bead. Only one Penitence can be active per run.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Missing NPC questlines. Talk to everyone repeatedly and come back after bosses.
  • Ignoring Bile Flask upgrades. Extra flasks and Quicksilver upgrades are the biggest survival boosts.
  • Leaving Guilt Fragments behind. Each one weakens your Fervour until recovered or absolved.
  • Hoarding Tears instead of buying sword skills early.
  • Healing mid-combo. Flasks have a long animation. The Pelican Effigy helps, but it's safer to heal after dodging away.
  • Skipping the Incorrupt Hand relic, then missing half the secrets.

Advanced Tips

  • Parry-riposte loops make most late-game humanoid enemies trivial.
  • Prayer builds: Debla of the Lights plus the Drop of Coagulated Ink and Crown of Gnawed Iron can carry many boss fights.
  • Tear farming: Zambra to the Resplendent Crown plus a quick enemy loop near a Prie Dieu.
  • Mirabras of the Return to Port saves huge amounts of backtracking between altars.
  • Boss Rush (Strife and Ruin) is great practice for tough fights without running back.
  • Render modes (Strife and Ruin) let you pick a presentation that feels better on your display.

FAQ

How long is Blasphemous? A main-story run is roughly 15 to 20 hours for most players. All DLC content and the true ending add much more.

How do I get the true ending? Immaculate Bead, then die three times to get the Weight of True Guilt, destroy all 7 Confessor Statues and clear their trials, then beat Escribar.

Is the DLC free? Yes. All three updates (The Stir of Dawn, Strife and Ruin, Wounds of Eventide) are free.

Should I play Blasphemous before Blasphemous II? Yes. Ending C of Wounds of Eventide leads directly into the sequel, and Blasphemous II got its own free expansion, The Third Sin, in June 2026.

Where do I heal? Bile Flasks (refilled at Prie Dieu). Upgrade the amount and number of flasks as you explore.

What's the hardest boss? Crisanta and the Amanecidas are the most common answers. Isidora and Exposito are also brutal.
