This guide covers X-Plane 11 on Steam: whether it's still worth buying next to X-Plane 12, first-time setup, flying your first circuit, navigation and the FMS, add-ons and scenery load order, and the performance settings that matter.

Researched September 2026 — current as of X-Plane 11's final 11.5x builds (Vulkan/Metal since 11.50); the successor X-Plane 12 is at 12.4.4 (September 2026). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

X-Plane 11 vs X-Plane 12 in 2026

  • X-Plane 11 launched on Steam on 30 March 2017 and got its big rendering change in 11.50, which moved it to Vulkan (Windows/Linux) and Metal (macOS). Laminar Research's active development has since moved to its successor, so XP11 is effectively a finished product.
  • X-Plane 12 came out in December 2022. It added seasons, better volumetric clouds and more realistic weather and precipitation. Wikipedia lists it at 12.4.4 (10 September 2026).
  • XP11 is still sold on Steam (app 269950), with Very Positive reviews, and a big catalogue of XP11 add-on DLC (airports, scenery, tools) is still there.

Buy XP11 if your PC is older (its requirements are much lower), if you want specific XP11-only add-ons, or if it's on sale cheap. Buy XP12 if you want current weather, current support and new aircraft. Add-ons don't always move between versions, so check each one.

Quick Start

  • Calibrate your controls first. Go to Settings > Joystick, move every axis, and set the null zones. A badly calibrated stick causes most "the plane won't fly straight" complaints.
  • Do the Flight School. The built-in tutorials teach takeoff, landing, traffic patterns and navigation. They're short and worth it.
  • Start in the Cessna 172SP. It's forgiving, and the skills carry over to every other plane.
  • Use the 3D cockpit. Every default aircraft has a working 3D cockpit, and you can click the switches with the mouse.
  • Learn trim. Trim takes the pressure off the controls. Stable flight is 80% trim.
  • Set weather and time in Flight Configuration before you fly. Start in daylight with calm winds.
  • Pause and replay freely. Use Replay to see where a landing went wrong.
  • Install scenery carefully. Put it in Custom Scenery and keep scenery_packs.ini in the right order (details below).

First-Time Setup

Controls

Action | Default key (verify in Settings > Keyboard)

Flaps up / down one notch | 1 / 2

Landing gear toggle | G

Toggle regular brakes | B

Throttle down / up | F1 / F2

Pause | P

X-Plane's keyboard settings have a search box. Type "view", "trim" or "brakes" to find and rebind any command. Map at least trim up/down, brakes, flaps, gear and view reset to your joystick buttons.

Graphics and Performance

  • Rendering: On 11.50 and later, XP11 uses Vulkan/Metal. Performance is smoother than the old OpenGL builds, but you need current GPU drivers.
  • Big FPS levers: world objects (autogen density), reflection detail, shadow quality and anti-aliasing. Reflection detail is the classic FPS killer, so keep it low.
  • VRAM: Texture quality should fit your GPU's VRAM. Stutters with high-detail airports usually mean VRAM is full.
  • Target: A steady frame rate beats a high peak. Aim for smooth over pretty, especially near big airports.

Flight Configuration

The main menu opens the Flight Configuration screen. Pick the aircraft, the livery, the airport and runway (or a ramp start), the weather (real-world or custom) and the time of day. You can also start on final approach to practise landings.

Default Aircraft Highlights

XP11 comes with a mix of general aviation, airliners, gliders, helicopters and oddities. All of them are IFR-ready, and some favourites are:

Aircraft | Why fly it

Cessna 172SP | The trainer. Learn the basics here

Beechcraft Baron 58 | Twin-engine piston and engine-out practice

Beechcraft King Air C90B | Turboprop, a step toward airliners

Cirrus Vision SF50 | A single-engine personal jet

Boeing 737-800 | Airliner with FMS, the backbone of sim airline flying

Boeing 747-400 / McDonnell Douglas MD-82 | Heavier airliners

Schleicher ASK 21 | Glider for thermal and ridge practice

Sikorsky S-76 | Helicopter. Much harder, so try it once you're comfortable

Space Shuttle | Novelty glide-to-landing challenge

The XP11 manual's full stock list also includes the McDonnell Douglas F-4, Columbia 400, Stinson L-5 Sentinel, Lockheed C-130, KC-10, B-52G, SR-71 and X-15, among others. Check the Flight Configuration aircraft grid to see what your install has.

The free community Zibo mod of the default 737-800 is hugely popular with XP11 users who want deeper airliner systems. Install it as a separate aircraft folder.

Your First Circuit (Cessna 172)

  • Before takeoff: Flaps up or at the first notch, trim set for takeoff, and brakes on while you run up the engine.
  • Takeoff roll: Brakes off, full throttle, right rudder to stay on the centreline. Rotate gently at rotation speed (check the aircraft's POH values or the in-sim checklist).
  • Climb: Pitch for a steady climb speed and trim out the pressure.
  • Crosswind and downwind: Level off at pattern altitude, reduce power, trim for level flight.
  • Base leg: Reduce power, add a notch of flaps, begin the descent.
  • Final: Line up with the centreline, add more flaps, and control speed with pitch and descent rate with power.
  • Flare: Just above the runway, smoothly pull back to raise the nose and let it settle onto the main wheels.
  • Replay it and repeat until it's consistent.

Navigation and IFR

  • VFR: Use the map (Flight > Map) to see nearby airports and navaids. Follow roads and rivers, and use the VOR needles for practice.
  • GPS: The default GA aircraft have GPS units for direct-to and flight plan work.
  • FMS (airliners): Enter the departure, the SID, waypoints or airways, the STAR and the approach. Then fly with the autopilot in LNAV/VNAV-style modes. The default FMS is simpler than payware add-ons but good for learning.
  • ATC: XP11 has built-in ATC you can request clearances from. It's basic, but good for practising radio calls. For realistic ATC, fly on VATSIM using the X-Plane-compatible xPilot client.
  • Navdata: The built-in navigation data dates from the XP11 era. For current procedures, get an updated AIRAC cycle from a navdata provider such as Navigraph (subscription).
  • Flight planning: Tools like SimBrief make realistic plans, fuel figures and routes that you can import into many add-ons and tools.

Scenery and Add-ons

Folder Basics

  • Aircraft: Put each aircraft folder inside X-Plane 11/Aircraft/.
  • Scenery: Put each package inside X-Plane 11/Custom Scenery/.
  • Plugins: Global plugins go in X-Plane 11/Resources/plugins/.

scenery_packs.ini Load Order

Custom Scenery/scenery_packs.ini sets the loading order. Packages at the top override the ones below. A safe order from top to bottom:

  • Custom airports (payware and freeware)
  • Global Airports (the default gateway airports)
  • Library packages
  • Overlays (roads, autogen, objects)
  • Orthophoto scenery (such as Ortho4XP tiles)
  • Mesh packages

If a custom airport doesn't appear, or looks broken or floating, it's almost always the load order or a missing library.

Useful Add-ons (by type)

Type | Examples | Notes

Airports | Payware airports sold on Steam as XP11 DLC (for example Stuttgart, KRDU, SBGR, KAST) | Check that they're for XP11 specifically

Photo scenery | Ortho4XP (free tool), Maps2XPlane-based packs | Big downloads and big quality gain

Ground services | SAM and its ground-service extensions | Jetways, followme vehicles, ground handling

Camera | Camera add-ons such as ProCam | Custom views and cinematics

Scripting | FlyWithLua | Many small community quality-of-life scripts

Airport building | WorldEditor (WED) | Laminar's free tool. Community airports go to the Airport Scenery Gateway

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Flying without calibrating. Null zones and a centred stick matter.
  • Maxing reflection and object settings. Your frame rate will crash near cities.
  • Mixing XP11 and XP12 add-ons. Many XP12 aircraft and scenery don't work in XP11, and the other way round.
  • Dumping scenery into Custom Scenery with no ordering. Always check scenery_packs.ini.
  • Chasing airliners before the basics. Learn pitch/power, trim and landings in the 172 first.
  • Leaving the brakes on for takeoff. It happens to everyone. Check the brake indicator.

Advanced Tips

  • Save a situation (File menu) at a tricky moment, like 5 nm out on final, and reload it to retry instantly.
  • Weather practice: Set crosswinds and gusts to train rudder and wing-low landings.
  • Failures: X-Plane lets you set up failures for engines, instruments and systems as part of your flight setup, which is great for emergency practice.
  • Plane Maker: XP11 includes Laminar's Plane Maker, so you can study or tweak flight models. X-Plane's physics calculate the forces on every surface (blade element theory), which is why modified designs fly "realistically".
  • Multi-monitor: XP11 supports extra windows and monitors for instruments or wide views.
  • VR: XP11 has built-in VR support. Keep the settings conservative for smooth frame times.

FAQ

Is X-Plane 11 still supported? It's still sold and works, but Laminar's active development has moved to X-Plane 12. Treat XP11 as a finished product.

Can I move my XP11 add-ons to XP12? Some work, and many need XP12-specific versions. Check with each developer.

Do I need a joystick? Strongly recommended. Mouse and keyboard flying is possible but frustrating, especially landings.

Why is my custom airport not showing? Wrong scenery_packs.ini order or a missing library. Put custom airports above Global Airports.

What's the best first aircraft? The Cessna 172SP. Then the Baron or King Air, then the 737-800.

Why does X-Plane stutter near big airports? VRAM is full, or object and reflection settings are too high. Lower textures and reflections first.

Is the Steam version different from Laminar's direct version? They're the same simulator. Steam handles updates and the add-on DLC through your Steam library.
