How to win consistently in the original Slay the Spire: deckbuilding fundamentals, map pathing, all four characters and their main archetypes, relics, bosses, the Act 4 keys, and climbing Ascension.

Researched September 2026 — current as of Slay the Spire v2.3.4 (the final patch line for the original game). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Which Spire? This guide covers the original Slay the Spire (2019). Mega Crit's sequel, Slay the Spire 2, launched in Early Access in March 2026 and is where new patches and content now land (the monthly "Neowsletter" posts are about StS2; as of September 2026 Mega Crit is working on an alternate Act 2, a new character and experimental modes). The first game is complete and stable. Most of the principles below carry over to the sequel, but its cards, characters and bosses are different.

Quick Start

  • A small deck is a strong deck. Every card you add dilutes your best ones. Skipping a card reward is often the right choice.
  • Act 1 needs damage. Grab strong attacks early. Most Act 1 deaths come from not killing things fast enough, not from lacking defense.
  • Fight elites when you can. Elites give relics, and relics win runs. Path through 1–2 Act 1 elites when your deck can handle them.
  • Upgrade (Smith) at rest sites unless your HP is low. Upgrades matter a lot.
  • Remove Strikes and Defends at shops (the card removal service) and events. That's the cheapest deck improvement in the game.
  • Plan for the boss. The Act boss is shown on the map from the start. Draft and path with it in mind.
  • Read enemy intents. The icon over each enemy tells you what it will do next turn. Block exactly what you need and put the rest into damage.
  • Potions are free power. Use them in hard elite and boss fights instead of dying with a full belt.
  • Unlock all characters, then chase the Heart. Winning Act 3 with the Ironclad, Silent and Defect unlocks the Act 4 keys.

The Basics

  • Energy: You get 3 energy per turn by default. Cards cost energy. Boss relics can raise this to 4.
  • Block goes away at the start of your next turn (unless you have Barricade, Calipers or a similar effect).
  • Card types: Attacks, Skills and Powers (permanent for the combat), plus Status and Curse cards you don't want.
  • Key buffs/debuffs: Strength (+damage per hit), Dexterity (+block per card), Vulnerable (target takes 50% more attack damage), Weak (deals 25% less attack damage), Frail (gain 25% less block).
  • Map nodes: Monster, Elite (flaming skull), Rest site, Merchant ($), Treasure, and ? (Unknown: an event, fight, shop or treasure).
  • Boss relics: After each boss you pick one of three. Many give +1 energy with a drawback.

Characters and Archetypes

Character | Starter relic | Identity

The Ironclad | Burning Blood (heal after combat) | Strength, Exhaust, self-damage, big block

The Silent | Ring of the Snake (draw extra on turn 1) | Poison, Shivs, Discard, card draw

The Defect | Cracked Core (channel Lightning at start) | Orbs (Lightning, Frost, Dark, Plasma), Focus

The Watcher | Pure Water (Miracle each combat) | Stances (Wrath/Calm/Divinity), Scry, burst

You start with the Ironclad. The Silent, the Defect and then the Watcher unlock as you play runs.

The Ironclad

  • Strength: Inflame, Spot Weakness, Demon Form, Limit Break, paired with multi-hit or scaling attacks such as Heavy Blade, Sword Boomerang, Twin Strike, Whirlwind.
  • Exhaust: Corruption + Feel No Pain + Dark Embrace is the famous engine. Add Second Wind, Burning Pact, Fiend Fire.
  • Block/Body Slam: Barricade, Entrench, Body Slam, Impervious, Flame Barrier.
  • Early all-stars: Shrug It Off, Pommel Strike, Carnage, Hemokinesis, Offering.

The Silent

  • Poison: Noxious Fumes, Deadly Poison, Bouncing Flask, Catalyst, Corpse Explosion. Weak early, dominant against bosses.
  • Shivs: Blade Dance, Cloak and Dagger, Accuracy, After Image, Infinite Blades. Relics like Kunai, Shuriken and Ornamental Fan scale it.
  • Discard/Draw: Acrobatics, Prepared, Tactician, Reflex, Calculated Gamble, Tools of the Trade.
  • Must-haves: Footwork (Dexterity), Backflip, Leg Sweep, Piercing Wail, Wraith Form (rare).

The Defect

  • Frost/Focus: Glacier, Coolheaded, Defragment, Capacitor, Loop. Stacked Frost orbs turn your defense into a passive wall.
  • Lightning: Ball Lightning, Electrodynamics, Tempest, Storm, Static Discharge.
  • Claw: Claw + All for One + zero-cost cards (Hologram, Beam Cell, Turbo).
  • Power picks: Echo Form, Biased Cognition (huge Focus, with a drawback), Seek, Buffer.

The Watcher

  • Stance dancing: Enter Wrath (double damage dealt and taken) to attack, then exit to Calm (gain energy on exit) or Neutral before enemies attack. Key cards: Eruption, Vigilance, Tantrum, Inner Peace, Fear No Evil, Empty Fist/Body/Mind.
  • Scaling engines: Rushdown (draw when entering Wrath), Mental Fortress (block on stance change), Talk to the Hand, Like Water.
  • Big finishers: Ragnarok, Brilliance, Blasphemy (risky, but it deals massive burst).
  • Scry: Third Eye, Cut Through Fate, Foresight, Nirvana, Weave.
  • The Watcher is widely considered the strongest character. Just never end a turn in Wrath when enemies are about to hit hard.

Pathing and Map Strategy

  • Act 1: Aim for about 2 elites if your deck has front-loaded damage. Hit a shop only if you have 150+ gold or a removal is worth it.
  • Before bosses: Try to have a rest site right before the boss. It's always there, so path so you arrive at it healthy enough to Smith instead of Rest.
  • ? nodes are good when you're weak (they're less likely to be fights). Elites are good when you're strong.
  • Act 2 is the most dangerous act. Its hallway fights (e.g. Snecko, Chosen, Byrds, and the groups) punish decks without block or AoE.

Bosses and Elites

Act | Bosses | Elites

1 (Exordium) | The Guardian, Hexaghost, Slime Boss | Gremlin Nob, Lagavulin, 3 Sentries

2 (The City) | The Champ, The Collector, Bronze Automaton | Gremlin Leader, Book of Stabbing, Slavers (Taskmaster)

3 (The Beyond) | Awakened One, Time Eater, Donu and Deca | Giant Head, Nemesis, Reptomancer

4 (The Ending) | Corrupt Heart | Spire Shield and Spire Spear

Boss tips

  • Gremlin Nob: Gains Strength whenever you play a Skill. Attack him instead of using skills.
  • The Guardian: Changes to Defensive Mode after taking enough damage. Stop attacking once it's in Sharp Hide.
  • Hexaghost: Its Inferno hits hard late in the fight. Kill it fast or bank block for the big turns.
  • Slime Boss: Splits at half HP. Burst it down to just above the split to control the pieces.
  • The Champ: Enrages at half HP and removes its debuffs. Save burst for after it gets its Strength.
  • Bronze Automaton: The Hyper Beam turn is huge, so block heavily that turn. Killing the Bronze Orbs early gets back any card they Stasis.
  • Awakened One: Gains Strength whenever you play a Power. Play your Powers early in phase 1, or save them for phase 2.
  • Time Eater: Ends your turn after every 12 cards. Play fewer, more impactful cards.
  • Donu and Deca: Focus one down instead of splitting damage. Donu's Circle of Power gives both of them Strength, while Deca shuffles Dazed into your deck and shields both. Bring AoE or strong block for the long fight.
  • Corrupt Heart: Beat Of Death deals damage every time you play a card, and Invincible caps the damage it takes each turn. You need a deck that scales and doesn't rely on spamming cheap cards.

Relics Worth Knowing

  • Build-arounds: Dead Branch (Exhaust decks), Kunai/Shuriken/Ornamental Fan (Shivs, multi-card turns), Pen Nib, Snecko Eye (randomizes costs, great with expensive cards), Runic Pyramid (keep your hand).
  • Energy boss relics and their drawbacks:

Relic | Drawback

Sozu | Can't obtain potions

Ectoplasm | Can't gain gold

Coffee Dripper | Can't Rest at rest sites

Fusion Hammer | Can't Smith at rest sites

Runic Dome | Can't see enemy intents

Cursed Key | Gain a curse when opening non-boss chests

Philosopher's Stone | All enemies start with Strength

Mark of Pain | Adds 2 Wounds to your draw pile each combat

Busted Crown | Fewer card choices in rewards

Velvet Choker | Can play at most 6 cards per turn

Energy is almost always worth it. Pick the drawback that your deck doesn't care about.

Act 4 and the Heart (the Keys)

After you've won with the Ironclad, the Silent and the Defect, three keys appear. Collect all three in one run to unlock Act 4:

  • Ruby Key: Choose Recall at a rest site (this costs you that rest site's heal or upgrade).
  • Emerald Key: Defeat a burning (super) elite, marked with flames on the map.
  • Sapphire Key: Take it from a treasure chest instead of the relic.

Tip: Get the Emerald Key when your deck is strong (burning elites are buffed). Take the Sapphire Key when the chest relic is weak. Recall for the Ruby when your HP is comfortable.

Ascension

Winning a run unlocks the next Ascension level for that character (up to 20). Each level stacks on top of the previous ones:

Level | Effect

1 | More elites

2–4 | Normal enemies / elites / bosses deal more damage

5 | Heal less after bosses (75%)

6 | Start damaged

7–9 | Normal enemies / elites / bosses have more HP and block

10 | Start with the curse Ascender's Bane

11 | One fewer potion slot

12 | Upgraded cards appear less often

13 | Bosses drop less gold

14 | Lower max HP

15 | Unfavorable events

16 | Shops cost more

17–19 | Normal enemies / elites / bosses use tougher movesets

20 | Double boss at the end of Act 3

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Taking every card. A bloated deck is inconsistent. Skip rewards that don't fix a real problem.
  • Picking only defense in Act 1. You'll run out of HP to chip damage because fights last too long.
  • Resting too much. If you're above roughly 60–70% HP with a manageable next stretch, Smith.
  • Ignoring AoE. Hallway groups (Gremlin Gang, Slavers, Act 3 groups) kill decks with no multi-target damage.
  • Hoarding potions. Use them to win elite fights that give relics.
  • Playing Powers into Awakened One or Skills into Gremlin Nob without thinking.
  • Forgetting the Ruby Key. You have to Recall at a rest site. It's easy to Smith on autopilot.

Advanced Tips

  • Front-load, then scale. Act 1 wants damage now. Acts 2–3 want scaling (Strength, Poison, Focus, Powers) and block efficiency.
  • Count lethal on enemy intents. Block only the difference, and turn extra energy into damage.
  • Card removal priority: Curses, then Strikes, then Defends. On Watcher/Silent, sometimes keep a Defend or two.
  • Infinite combos exist (e.g. very thin decks with draw and zero-cost cards, or Watcher's Rushdown loops). Thin decks plus draw make them possible.
  • Neow's bonus: The big-risk options (lose max HP, gain a rare, or swap your starter relic for a random boss relic) are often stronger than the safe ones once you know the game.
  • Daily Climb and Custom mode are good for practice with odd modifiers.
  • Mods: The Steam Workshop and ModTheSpire host huge mods, including the fan-favorite Downfall (play as the bosses), which is getting an official board game expansion.

FAQ

How do I unlock the Silent, Defect and Watcher? Play runs. Characters unlock in order (Silent, then Defect, then Watcher) as you progress with the previous character.

How do I fight the Heart? Win with the Ironclad, Silent and Defect to unlock the keys, then collect the Ruby, Emerald and Sapphire Keys in one run and beat the Act 3 boss.

Who is the best character? The Watcher has the highest power ceiling. The Ironclad is the most forgiving for learning.

Should I buy Slay the Spire 2 instead? StS2 is in Early Access (since March 2026) with ongoing updates. The original is complete, polished and cheaper. Both are worth playing, and the skills transfer.

Is Ascension 20 worth it? It's the ultimate challenge. For a smoother climb, pick one character (Ironclad or Watcher) and push them first.

Does Slay the Spire still get updates? The original game's last patches were the v2.3 line. New development is focused on Slay the Spire 2.
