A full guide to Flying Wild Hog's 2013 reboot of Shadow Warrior: how the katana, guns and Ki powers fit together, how to spend money, Karma and Ki crystals, how to handle every enemy type, and how to chase secrets and the harder difficulties.
Researched September 2026 — current as of the final PC release (no further patches announced; the series continued with Shadow Warrior 2 in 2016 and Shadow Warrior 3 in 2022). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.
About This Game
- What it is: A single-player, linear first-person action game starring Lo Wang, a corporate enforcer for Orochi Zilla sent to buy a legendary blade, the three-part Nobitsura Kage. Things go wrong, a demonic invasion follows, and Wang teams up with an exiled demon named Hoji against his own employer.
- Released: September 26, 2013 on Windows (Devolver Digital), then PS4 and Xbox One in October 2014 and Linux/macOS on April 27, 2015.
- Which "Shadow Warrior" is this? This guide covers the 2013 reboot (Steam app 233130). It is different from the 1997 3D Realms original (sold separately as Shadow Warrior Classic) and from the looter-shooter Shadow Warrior 2 (2016) and the linear Shadow Warrior 3 (2022). Devolver sells all three modern games as the Shadow Warrior Trilogy bundle.
- No multiplayer: Campaign only.
- Reception: Metacritic 73 (PC), 70 (PS4), 74 (Xbox One). Critics loved the swordplay and pace; the common criticism was repetitive boss fights.
Quick Start
- The katana is your best weapon for most of the game. It does not use ammo, it is fast, and it scales with Karma skills. Guns are for range, crowds and specific threats.
- Pick up money everywhere. Cash upgrades your guns: better damage, faster fire, and alternate fire modes.
- Karma comes from killing with style. Headshots, dismemberments and combos earn more; spend Karma on new katana moves and bonuses.
- Hunt for Ki crystals. They are hidden collectibles that unlock supernatural powers (shown as tattoos on Wang).
- Heal early, not late. Health packs and the healing power are your lifeline; do not wait until one hit from death.
- Explore every side room. Secrets hold money, crystals and fortune cookies, and there are many hidden areas.
- Use the environment. Explosive objects, traps and hazards kill fast and have their own achievements.
- Start on Normal. Casual is a good option if you just want the story; Hard and Insane expect you to use every tool.
- Target priority beats raw DPS. Shamans, Mother demons and Warlords change how every fight plays; kill them first.
The Three Upgrade Currencies
Currency | How you get it | What it buys
Money | Found in the world and in secrets | Weapon upgrades: laser sights, better barrels, new fire modes and alt-fires
Karma | Earned in combat for style and efficiency | New katana moves and passive bonuses from the skill trees
Ki crystals | Hidden collectibles | Supernatural Ki powers and upgrades to them
Spending order that works:
- Early Karma into a core katana special attack and survivability.
- Early money into your most-used gun (usually the shotgun or SMG).
- Ki crystals into healing and defensive powers first, then offensive ones.
Combat: Katana
- Basic swings cut and dismember. You can decapitate or slice enemies apart, which also earns Karma.
- Special attacks come from the Karma skill tree. They are performed by combining movement-key inputs with an attack, so read each skill's input in the menu when you unlock it and practice it on weak enemies.
- Katana first on fodder, guns on elites: swarms of lesser demons are ideal katana fodder; heavy demons are safer with guns and explosives.
- Keep moving. Strafing while swinging avoids most melee retaliation. The game rewards aggression, but not standing still.
- Achievement note: Specialist asks for 100 kills with katana special attacks.
Combat: Guns
The arsenal includes revolvers/pistols, submachine guns (dual-wieldable), a shotgun that can be upgraded into a multi-barrel beast, a crossbow (ordinary bolts plus remote-detonated sticky bombs), and a laser-guided rocket launcher. Every gun has several upgrades including alternate firing options.
Weapon | Best use | Upgrade priority
Pistol/revolver | Headshots at mid range early on | Damage and fire rate
SMG | Sustained fire, dual-wielded for crowd control | Magazine and dual wield
Shotgun | Close-range burst, staggering big demons | Extra barrels and damage
Crossbow | Precision; sticky bombs for groups and armored foes | Explosive options
Rocket launcher | Bosses and heavies | Guidance and damage
Demon Head and Demon Heart: Some enemies drop body parts you can use as weapons; the achievements Headache (50 kills with a demon head) and Heart Attack (50 kills with a demon heart) confirm both. Use them when they drop; they are powerful and free.
Ki Powers
Ki crystals unlock supernatural powers, shown as tattoos on Wang's body, covering shockwave attacks, healing and damage boosts, and ways to stun or manipulate enemies (the store page describes powers that "protect yourself and paralyze your enemies"). As with katana specials, each power has an input combination; bind them comfortably and practice.
Priority: Healing first. It saves you when health packs are scarce, which on Hard and Insane is often.
Enemy Guide
The game's achievement list confirms these enemy types. Learn their jobs, because priority matters more than damage.
Enemy | Why it matters | How to handle it
Shaman | Supports other demons | Kill first; ranged weapons or a quick dash with the katana.
Warlord | Heavy, elite demon | Keep distance, use rockets, sticky bombs and shotgun bursts.
Berserker | Aggressive charger | Sidestep and counter; do not trade blows head-on.
Mother demon | Explodes if not killed in time | Kill before it detonates (the Defused achievement is 100 of these).
Crawling demons | Fast ground swarmers | Katana sweeps and shotguns.
Enraged demons | More dangerous state of lesser demons | Burst them down before they reach you.
Burning enemies | Set alight by fire hazards or attacks | Finish them quickly; they still hurt on contact.
Environmental kills: Explosive barrels, electrical hazards and water traps all kill enemies, and there are achievements for environmental kills (Firestarter, Agent of Mayhem, Demolition Man), electrocution (Raiden) and trap kills (Aviator).
Bosses
Boss fights in the reboot are big, scripted encounters that usually require spotting weak points or following a specific pattern rather than just dumping damage. General approach:
- Watch the first cycle. Most bosses telegraph a pattern that reveals when they are vulnerable.
- Clear adds first. Smaller demons during boss fights often kill you more than the boss does.
- Bring explosives. Rockets and sticky bombs save time on large targets.
- Keep healing up. Do not go into a vulnerable window at low health.
Secrets and Collectibles
- Secrets: Many side areas are hidden behind breakable walls, vents and out-of-the-way paths. Achievements track 5 secrets (Digger), 25 (Treasure Raider) and all of them (Mr. Jones).
- Ki crystals: Often hidden in secrets; missing them means fewer powers.
- Fortune cookies: Scattered around and full of jokes; grab them as you go (the hidden Cookie Monster achievement is widely believed to be linked, but its description is not public).
- Destructibles: Pots and props break for money and fun; there are achievements for breaking 50, 250 and 1,000 items.
Difficulty Levels
Difficulty | Notes
Casual | Story-focused; enemies are forgiving.
Normal | The intended balance.
Hard | Enemies hit harder and elites appear more; upgrades matter.
Insane | You need full use of Ki powers, katana specials and target priority.
Heroic | The top challenge, tied to the No Ordinary Wang achievement. Treat it as a separate, prepared run.
Many achievements have tiers per difficulty (for example Shadow Warrior Tier 1–4 for completing on Casual through Insane).
Achievement Planning (92 total)
The Steam list has 92 achievements. Most are cumulative, so the trick is knowing which ones need deliberate effort.
Group | Examples | Plan
Difficulty completions | Shadow Warrior (Tier 1–4), No Ordinary Wang (Heroic) | Each tier names a specific difficulty; check a current community guide on whether a harder clear also awards lower tiers before planning four runs. Heroic is its own run.
Elite kills per difficulty | Anarchist (Warlord), Spell Breaker (Shaman), Nervine (Berserker) | These pop on your first kill of each elite, so they come naturally on each difficulty you play.
Speed kills | Enraged (5 in 10 s), Furious (10 in 15 s), Berserk (15 in 20 s) | Big katana sweeps into dense crowds, or explosives in tight rooms.
One-shot multi-kills | Bloodbath (3), Slaughterhouse (6), Hell On Earth (10) | Rockets and sticky bombs into packs; for ten, wait for the densest crowd you can find.
Weapon-specific | Detonator (75 sticky bomb kills), Nailed (pin 50 with bolts), Headache, Heart Attack | Use the crossbow and demon parts whenever they fit; do not save them.
Status kills | Toasted (burn 100), Merciful (kill 50 burning), Sleepyhead (kill 50 stunned), Tranquillizer (50 enraged demons) | Pair a stun power with a follow-up; use fire hazards and fire-based attacks for the burn kills.
Progression | Senpai (10 skills), Sensei (all skills), One Man Army (all weapon upgrades), The Power! (all power upgrades) | Require thorough exploration for money and Ki crystals.
Secrets | Digger (5), Treasure Raider (25), Mr. Jones (all) | Mr. Jones is the missable one; use a chapter-by-chapter secret list on a replay.
Hidden | Cookie Monster, Alice In Shadowland, Matador, Horse Whisperer, Head Hunter | Descriptions are hidden on Steam; check a community guide if you want them.
Achievement Whore unlocks when you have everything else.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Ignoring the katana. Players who treat it as a backup waste ammo and miss Karma.
- Spreading money across every gun. Max one or two favorites first.
- Skipping exploration. Secrets hold a big share of money and Ki crystals.
- Fighting in the open against elites. Use corners and hazards to split them from the pack.
- Forgetting to heal. Bank a healing option before each arena.
- Letting Mother demons live. They punish hesitation.
Advanced Tips
- Chain kills for achievements and Karma. There are tiered achievements for killing 5, 10 and 15 enemies within short time windows on each difficulty.
- Multi-kills with one shot (3, 6 and 10 enemies) are easiest with the rocket launcher, explosive crossbow bolts and explosive props in tight rooms.
- Pin enemies with crossbow bolts for the Nailed achievement; it happens naturally when you shoot enemies near walls.
- Save explosives for Warlords and bosses rather than trash mobs.
- Use stuns to set up katana specials on dangerous enemies.
Running It Today
- Steam version is the easiest; it runs well on modern PCs.
- Controllers work, but mouse and keyboard is better for special-move inputs and headshots.
- If you enjoyed it, Shadow Warrior 2 adds co-op and loot, while Shadow Warrior 3 returns to a linear, faster style.
