How to win more games of SMG Studio's official digital RISK: the rules the app uses, how settings like card bonuses, blizzards and portals change strategy, opening and mid-game play for FFA and 1v1, and how ranked seasons work.
Researched September 2026 — current as of Season 31 (started August 27, 2026; ends October 8) and the v3.2x update line (v3.23 Pirate Map Pack 2 in April; v3.24 "Core" scheduled for August), with v4.0 "Battle Cards" planned for Oct/Nov 2026. Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.
Quick Start
- It's free to play. Everything that matters for winning is free; purchases are mostly cosmetic (dice, avatars, maps packs, etc.).
- Learn Classic first. The Classic map has 42 territories and six continents — master the fundamentals there before the 120+ custom maps.
- Don't overextend early. Your first few turns should make a card and protect your stack — not paint the map.
- Always earn a card each turn. You get one card per turn if you capture at least one territory. Missing cards costs you long-term.
- Understand the card setting. Fixed, Progressive and No-cards games play very differently (see below).
- Border count matters more than territory count. Fewer borders = fewer places you can be attacked.
- Diplomacy is half the game in FFA. The store literally sells it as a feature — use chat/emotes and let other players fight each other.
- Watch the ranked season calendar. Recent seasons have run roughly six to nine weeks (Season 30: June 11–August 11, 2026; Season 31: August 27–October 8, 2026) and each starts with a soft reset.
Core Rules (as used in the app)
Reinforcements
- Each turn: territories owned ÷ 3 (rounded down), minimum 3.
- Plus continent bonuses for fully owned continents.
- Plus card trade-ins when you have a set.
Classic continent bonuses
Continent | Territories | Bonus
Asia | 12 | +7
North America | 9 | +5
Europe | 7 | +5
Africa | 6 | +3
South America | 4 | +2
Australia | 4 | +2
Combat
- Attacker rolls up to 3 dice (needs one more troop than dice used); defender rolls up to 2.
- Highest dice are compared pairwise; ties go to the defender.
- The app offers dice options (e.g. true random vs balanced/blitz variants depending on mode) — check the lobby settings.
Cards
Three card types (infantry, cavalry, artillery) plus wilds. Trade-in sets give troops.
Card mode | How it works | Strategic effect
Progressive | Each trade-in anywhere in the game is worth more than the last | Late game becomes a race to eliminate players for their cards
Fixed | Each set is worth a fixed amount by type | Slower, more positional; continent bonuses matter more
No cards | No card trades | Pure map control; bonuses and border management dominate
Eliminating a player gives you their cards — in progressive games this is the main way to snowball.
Settings That Change Strategy
Setting | What it does | Strategy tip
Blizzards | Some territories are impassable | Creates natural chokepoints; bonuses become easier to defend
Portals | Some territories connect to distant ones | Borders are not what they look like — check portal links before committing
Fog of War | You only see territories adjacent to yours | Scout before attacking; bluff your strength
Capitals / other modes | Alternate win conditions | Protect your own objectives first
Teams (2v2) | Shared victory | Coordinate reinforcements and avoid splitting forces
Opening Strategy (FFA)
- Consolidate. Stack reinforcements on one or two territories rather than spreading thin.
- Pick a realistic bonus. On Classic, Australia and South America are easiest to hold (few entry points). North America is strong but harder to hold early.
- Take a card every turn, ideally with minimal losses — attack a weak adjacent territory.
- Avoid being the biggest threat early. Other players will gang up on the leader.
- Leave buffers. Letting weaker players occupy territory between you and a strong opponent can protect you.
Classic map openings
- Australia start: Stack on Indonesia, the only entry point (it borders Siam). Taking Siam too just moves your border into Asia, where it's exposed to India and China — only push when you can hold it.
- South America start: Hold Venezuela and Brazil; expand into North Africa or Central America when strong.
- North America start: Consolidate before taking the full continent (it has three entry points: Alaska, Greenland, Central America).
Classic continent entry points
Continent | Entry territories you must hold | Borders to defend
Australia | Indonesia (connects to Siam) | 1
South America | Venezuela, Brazil | 2
Africa | North Africa, Egypt, East Africa | 3
North America | Alaska, Greenland, Central America | 3
Europe | Iceland, Ukraine, Southern Europe, Western Europe | 4
Asia | Middle East, Afghanistan, Ural, Siam, Kamchatka | 5
The table explains the classic wisdom: bonus per border is best in Australia and South America, worst in Europe and Asia. Custom maps follow the same logic — always divide the bonus by the number of borders you'd have to defend.
Attack odds rules of thumb
- Attacking with 3 dice against 2 is favourable for the attacker on average; attacking into 2 dice with only 1 or 2 dice is not.
- Large stacks attacking small ones win reliably; stack-vs-stack fights of similar size are coin flips that mostly help the third player.
- In blitz-style dice modes, results are smoothed, so plans are more predictable — lean on math more. In true-random dice, leave extra margin.
Mid-Game
- Count threats and troop totals every turn. The in-game stats show troops/territories per player.
- Break bonuses of rivals when cheap — especially if they're pulling ahead.
- Keep your stack mobile. A stack that can strike multiple directions forces others to be cautious.
- Plan card turns. In progressive games, time your trade-in so you can eliminate a weakened player and take their cards.
- Watch "kill" opportunities. A player with few territories and many cards is a juicy target.
Endgame
- Progressive: Look for chain eliminations. Each elimination gives you cards and troops, allowing another.
- Fixed: Hold bonuses, force others to attack you, and strike when your reinforcement lead is clear.
- 1v1: Pure efficiency. Avoid wasting troops and keep your border short.
1v1 Tips
- Neutrals matter. 1v1 often includes neutral territories; use them as buffers.
- Tempo: Taking a card every turn and not overextending wins most 1v1s.
- Bonus math: Compare your total income vs your opponent's each turn — whoever gains income faster usually wins.
Ranked Seasons
Seasons end with a soft reset. According to SMG's Season 31 announcement:
Rank Class | Points threshold
Grandmaster | 26k
Master | 16k
Expert | 11k
Intermediate | 6k
Beginner | 1k
Novice | 0
- If you completed a qualifying game in the previous season, you drop to the bottom of your current Rank Class.
- For each season you skipped, you drop one additional Rank Class.
- Season 31 started August 27, 2026 and ends October 8, 2026.
Maps & Content (2026)
- 120+ maps: from ~20-territory quick maps to 90+ territory epics.
- Pirate Map Pack 2 (v3.23, April 2026): Cursed Hand Caves, Port Royal (15 continents, 105 territories), Tortuga (14 continents, 96 territories), Stinkpot Cove (11 continents, 90 territories).
- Sandbox maps: Community-made maps shared via codes in official bulletins.
What's Next (Roadmap)
- v3.24 "Core" (scheduled for August 2026 in the July roadmap): Rebuilds networking, reconnection, game state and turn timing — fewer dropped games and more reliable reconnects/bot-outs.
- v4.0 "Battle Cards" (planned Oct/Nov 2026): A major update, including a redesigned Game Over sequence.
SMG also retired its earlier server-authoritative "Network Overhaul" approach after a late-2025 closed beta showed input delay and regional latency issues.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Spreading troops thin. Every territory with 1 troop is a free card for someone else.
- Taking a big continent too early. You become the target.
- Not taking a card. Over a game, missing card turns is a huge disadvantage.
- Ignoring portals/blizzards. Misreading the map loses games.
- Attacking with bad odds. Use more dice and bigger stacks.
- Trusting alliances blindly. In FFA, betrayal is part of the game.
Advanced Tips
- Bluff with stack placement. Sometimes placing troops to look threatening prevents attacks.
- Kingmaking awareness. Avoid moves that give a rival an easy elimination and cards.
- Border pruning. Give up far-flung territories to shorten borders if needed.
- Time trade-ins carefully in progressive games to maximize eliminations.
- Play quicker maps to learn. Small maps give faster feedback on fundamentals.
- Mind the turn timer. Online games are timed, and repeatedly timing out gets you replaced by a bot ("bot-out"). Decide your placement before your turn arrives by watching others' moves.
- Fortify smartly. Your end-of-turn fortify move is limited, so pull troops off interior territories toward the borders that actually matter.
- Read the lobby settings before the first placement. Card mode, fog, blizzards and portals should decide your opening, not the other way round.
- Study creators and tournaments. SMG's monthly community bulletins highlight community tournaments and YouTube/Twitch creators — watching high-level games is the fastest way to learn current ranked habits.
