A practical guide to Big Blue Bubble's free-to-play monster-breeding music game on Steam: how breeding and islands work, how to earn coins and diamonds without spending money, what to prioritise early, and what's in the current Anniversary Month update.
Researched September 2026 — current as of Update 5.7.0 (September 2, 2026) and the new monsters released September 16, 2026. Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.
Quick Start
- Every monster is an instrument. Each island has its own song, and every monster adds a part. More monsters means a fuller song and more coin income.
- Breed, don't just buy. Buying basic monsters is fine at the start, but new species come from putting two monsters in the Breeding Structure. Combining monsters with different elements creates new species.
- Feed monsters to level them. Higher-level monsters produce more coins. Food is baked in Bakeries using coins.
- Collect coins often. Monsters store only so much. Checking in regularly beats long gaps.
- Save diamonds. Diamonds are the premium currency. Don't spend them speeding up timers; save them for things you can't get otherwise, like extra structures or important purchases.
- Upgrade your Castle. The Castle's level limits how many monsters an island can hold. Upgrading it is how you grow.
- Unlock more islands as you level. Each island has its own monster roster and song.
- Do the goals. Goals (achievements-style tasks) pay out XP, coins and diamonds.
- Join events. Seasonal and special events bring limited monsters and costumes; many are free to take part in.
- An internet connection is required. The game is online-only on Steam.
Currencies
Currency | How you get it | Best use
Coins | Monsters produce them over time | Buying monsters, decorations and structures, feeding
Food | Bakeries produce it from coins | Levelling monsters
Diamonds | Goals, levelling up, events, some monsters, real money | Structures and important purchases, not speed-ups
Starpower | Earned through play (see the in-game currency tooltip for sources) | An alternative way to buy Rare monsters and special items
Other island-specific currencies | Certain islands and events use their own currencies | Spend on that island's special content
Rule of thumb: coins and food are for growth, diamonds are for permanent upgrades.
Breeding
- Place two monsters in the Breeding Structure.
- Wait for the timer. The result appears in the Nursery as an egg.
- Hatch the egg, then place the monster on the island.
Notes:
- Different elements breed new species. Two monsters sharing no elements often give a new combined-element monster.
- Breeding can fail to give the monster you wanted. Results depend on the pair; sometimes you get one of the parents or a different compatible species. Keep trying.
- Breeding times tell you what you got. Each species has its own incubation time. Community wikis and the in-game hints list them.
- An extra Breeding Structure and Nursery speed things up a lot. They're among the best diamond purchases.
- Rare and Epic variants appear during limited windows. Keep an eye on in-game announcements.
Common, Rare and Epic
Most monsters come in three versions:
Version | How you get it | Tip
Common | Normal breeding or buying | The backbone of every island
Rare | Specific breeding combinations during their availability windows, or bought with Diamonds or Starpower | Breeding is free, just slower; check the combo before you spend premium currency
Epic | Unique breeding requirements that are harder to meet | Plan these once an island is well developed
Rares and Epics sing variations on the common monster's part, so they're as much about completing your collection and song as they are about income.
Ethereal Islets
Since version 4.7.0, Ethereal Islets let you sacrifice monsters into a Dish Harmonizer structure to produce new creatures. Only commit monsters you can breed again easily, and read what the Harmonizer needs before feeding it anything you'd miss.
Islands
The game has over 40 islands. The main natural islands form the core progression; special islands have unique rules.
Island type | What's special
Natural islands | The main progression; standard breeding and coin production
Special mechanic islands | Many use unique ways to acquire monsters, such as transferring or zapping monsters from other islands, or gathering special items
Composer Island | Build your own songs and share them
Event islands | Such as Paironormal Carnival and the new BBLI$ZARD ISLAND
Advice:
- Focus on one island at a time. Get its Castle upgraded and its basic monsters bred before spreading out.
- Special islands have prerequisites. Many require monsters bred elsewhere. Read the island's description before investing.
Your First Week: A Simple Plan
Day | Focus
1 | Finish the tutorial, buy the basic monsters for your first island, and start your first breeds
2 | Keep the Bakery running, feed your best coin earners, and collect coins every time you log in
3 | Upgrade the Castle as soon as you can afford it; more monster slots means a fuller song and more income
4 | Work through the Goals list for XP, coins and diamonds
5 | Save diamonds toward a second Breeding Structure or Nursery rather than speeding anything up
6 to 7 | Unlock your next island, and start filling it while the first keeps producing
Keep this rhythm going: collect, feed, breed, upgrade the Castle, unlock the next island.
Structures Worth Knowing
Structure | Why it matters
Castle | Sets the island's monster capacity; upgrade to grow
Breeding Structure | Where new monsters come from; a second one doubles your breeding speed
Nursery | Hatches eggs; an extra one stops breeds from backing up
Bakery | Turns coins into food for levelling monsters
Decorations | Many boost nearby monsters' coin output
Structure improvements were part of Update 5.7.0; check the in-game notes for the specifics on your islands.
Levelling Monsters and Your Account
- Monster level rises by feeding. Higher levels mean more coins and are sometimes required to transfer or use monsters elsewhere.
- Player level rises with XP from breeding, feeding, buying and completing goals. New islands, structures and decorations unlock as you level.
- Decorations increase coin output of nearby monsters on many islands. Place them next to your best earners.

F2P Tips: Progressing Without Spending
- Do daily log-ins and events. Events are where most free premium currency and limited monsters come from.
- Complete goals. They're a steady diamond source.
- Level up for diamonds. Levelling your account pays out rewards; breeding and feeding are the fastest XP.
- Don't speed up timers. Plan breeding around your schedule; start long breeds before bed or work.
- Upgrade Castles before buying lots of decorations. More monster slots means more income.
- Place monsters and decorations for coin boosts. Many decorations boost the monsters around them.
- Check the in-game market for deals only if a purchase gives permanent value (structures, key monsters), not temporary speed.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Spending diamonds on speed-ups. The biggest early trap. Save them.
- Breeding the same pair repeatedly without checking timers. The timer tells you what egg you've got.
- Overfilling islands with decorations. Space is limited; prioritise monster slots.
- Neglecting food production. Levelling monsters needs a lot of food.
- Jumping into special islands too early. Most need well-developed natural islands first.
- Missing event windows. Limited monsters and costumes may not return soon.
- Assuming it works offline. It requires an internet connection.
Advanced Tips
- Batch breeding: start breeds with long timers when you'll be away and quick ones when you're active.
- Use multiple Breeding Structures on the same island to chase specific monsters faster.
- Plan for Legendary and event monsters by saving currency ahead of Anniversary and seasonal events.
- Composer Island: use it to learn how each monster's part fits into songs, then share your creations.
- Costumes: the new Extract Costume feature (5.7.0) adds flexibility in managing costumes. Check it before spending on duplicates.
- Sticker Albums add goals to chase; complete them alongside regular play.
