A spoiler-light guide to Ninja Theory's Hellblade: how combat and Focus work, how to read the rune and perspective puzzles, the route through Helheim, how to find all 44 lorestones, the "permadeath" rot mechanic, and PC settings for the Enhanced update.
Researched September 2026 — current as of the Enhanced PC update (November 16, 2021) and its December 7, 2021 patch. Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.
Quick Start
- There is no HUD. Health, danger and hints come from the voices (the Furies) and Druth's narration. Play with headphones; the binaural audio is the interface.
- The rot is a bluff. The game warns that if the rot on Senua's arm reaches her head, your save is deleted. It is a deliberate scare: the rot stops advancing before that ever happens. Play normally.
- Set difficulty to Auto or pick one. Options offer dynamically adjusted Auto, or manual Easy, Medium and Hard. Auto is the intended experience.
- Listen for "Behind you!" The Furies call out attacks from off-screen enemies. React to the warning, not the visuals.
- Rune puzzles are about perspective. Doors are sealed by runes; find the same shape formed by the environment when you line up the camera, then Focus on it.
- Lorestones are missable. There are 44, they are the only collectibles, and there is no chapter select to go back. Explore each area before moving on.
- Heavy attacks and melee break guards. Shield enemies block light attacks; use melee (a kick or shoulder charge) or a heavy attack to open them up.
- Focus is a lifesaver. Built up in combat, it slows time and lets Senua land hits quickly; save it for crowds and shadow enemies.
- Expect around 7 to 9 hours. It is a tight, linear, narrative game.
Settings Worth Changing (Enhanced PC)
The free Enhanced update in November 2021 added DirectX 12 and ray tracing, DLSS and FSR, full controller and keyboard remapping, subtitle customization and colorblind modes.
Setting | Recommendation
API | DX12 for ray tracing; DX11 is the fallback if you see stutter or crashes
Ray tracing preset | Low, Medium or High; ray-traced shadows are exclusive to High
Upscaling | DLSS (NVIDIA) or FSR (AMD/any GPU) to hold frame rate with ray tracing
Subtitles | On, Large, Solid background if the whispers get hard to follow
Audio output | Stereo with headphones; the binaural voices are the point
Run modifier | Toggle or Hold, whichever you prefer
Colorblind filters | Deuteranopia, Protanopia, Tritanopia with adjustable intensity
The December 2021 patch fixed ultrawide support, audio levels not applying, and DX12 stutter (by pre-generating shaders for both RT on and off). The whole game can be played on keyboard alone, with arrow keys replacing the mouse for camera.
A separate VR edition was released for HTC Vive and Oculus Rift in July 2018.
Combat
Senua has a small, precise moveset. Mastering four things wins every fight.
Action | Use
Light attack | Fast, weak; combo starter
Heavy attack | Slow, strong; breaks some guards
Melee (kick/shove) | Breaks a blocking enemy's guard and staggers
Block | Chip protection; timed right before a hit it becomes a parry that opens the enemy
Dodge | Invincible sidestep; your main defense against heavy attacks
Focus | Slows the world so you can land free hits; also dispels some shadow enemies
Core rules
- Parry, then punish. A well-timed block right before a hit staggers the attacker. Follow with a heavy attack.
- Dodge big swings, parry quick ones. Large axe and sword overheads are safer to dodge.
- Guard-breakers need melee. Shield-carriers and blocking enemies eat light attacks; kick, then combo.
- Keep enemies in view. Lock-on focuses on one target; the Furies warn you when someone is behind you. Rotate so the group is in front.
- Fall and recover. When Senua is knocked down, mash the prompt to get up before you are finished off.
- Focus in crowds. Use it when three or more enemies commit at once, or against enemies that phase in and out of shadow.
Puzzles
Rune doors
A sealed door shows one or more runes. Somewhere nearby the environment forms the same shape when viewed from the right spot: a broken beam, a shadow, the edge of a roof, a flag. Walk until the camera lines it up, and the rune glows and unlocks. Tips:
- The Furies whisper when you are close. Stop and pan slowly.
- Shadows count. Look at the ground as well as the architecture.
- Multi-rune doors want each shape in turn.
Perspective and illusion puzzles
In Valravn's domain, archways reshape the world: looking through them adds or removes bridges and walls. Focus through an arch to change the path, step through, then look back to see what changed.
Darkness and light
Several trials flip between two versions of the same area (for example burning and extinguished, or lit and pitch-dark). Look for the switch mechanism, then learn which route exists in which state.
The Route Through Helheim
Spoiler-light outline of the areas, in play order where it matters.
Stage | What to expect
The Road to Hel | Arrival, first rune doors, first fights ("The Fight Begins")
The gate and the two gods | The way into Helheim only opens once you have defeated both the fire giant Surtr and Valravn, the god of illusions
Surtr's trial | Fire trial; extinguish the flames to reveal paths, then the Surtr fight ("Extinguished")
Valravn's trial | Illusion puzzles built on perspective arches, then the Valravn fight ("Master of Illusion")
The bridge to Helheim | After both gods fall, Senua crosses the bridge and Hela beats her with one blow and shatters her sword. This is a scripted story turn, not a fight you can win
The great tree and its four trials | Druth's visions lead Senua to a great tree, where four trials test her body, spirit and mind. Clearing them earns the sword Gramr ("Gram Released")
The Sea of Corpses | A dark stretch where the Darkness presses in; follow the light
Garmr | The beast at the gates of Helheim ("Tamed the Beast")
Hela and the final battle | Hela summons a legion of undead warriors; a long wave battle ("The Final Battle") and the ending
Boss notes
- Surtr: a fire giant fight among flames. Dodge the big sweeps, strike during recovery, and handle adds before committing.
- Valravn: he teleports and blinks in and out of sight. Use Focus when he vanishes and punish after his lunges.
- Garmr: the beast guarding the gates of Helheim, fought after the Sea of Corpses and with Gramr in hand. Dodge its charges, pay attention to the lighting in the arena and the Furies' warnings, and punish it when it is exposed.
- Gramr's edge: once you have Gramr, its charged heavy attacks and more forgiving parries make every later fight easier. Lean on them.
- The final battle: it is a long, continuous wave fight rather than a normal boss. Keep fighting and managing space; the scene resolves on its own terms.
Sight-deprived sections
At least one stretch takes away most of your sight (the "Trust Your Senses" achievement hints at it). Walk slowly, listen to directional audio, and move toward light sources. Headphones make this much easier.
Lorestones (44 total)
Lorestones are glowing totems. Focus on one to hear Druth tell a Norse myth. Collecting all 44 unlocks the "Stories From the North" achievement and an extra story sequence. Steam shows only about 5% of players with it, the lowest of any Hellblade achievement.
Lorestones are spread unevenly across the areas, and a few areas have none. Rather than trusting a count from memory, follow a location guide such as TheGamer's (linked in Sources) area by area.
Rules of thumb:
- They are missable. Once you move past an area you usually cannot return, and there is no chapter select. Use a lorestone guide per area if you want 100%.
- They hide off the main path. Dead-end alleys, the far side of illusion arches, behind ruins, and near rune doors.
- Druth mutters when one is near. Slow down when you hear him.
Achievements
Hellblade has 14 Steam achievements. Judging by their unlock rates (roughly 29 to 44% for the story ones, 83% for the first fight, and 5.4% for the lorestones as of September 2026), 13 come naturally from finishing the story, and one ("Stories From the North") needs all 44 lorestones. That makes a full completion a one-playthrough job if you are careful, or a second run if you miss one.
Achievement | Tied to
The Fight Begins | First combat
Extinguished | Completing Surtr's trial
Master of Illusion | Completing Valravn's trial
Gram Released | Obtaining Gramr
Tamed the Beast | Defeating Garmr
The Final Battle | The last fight
Stories From the North | All 44 lorestones
Others (Escaped, Source of the Darkness, Different Perspectives, Cure For The Plague, Trust Your Senses, Warrior, Into the Mountain) | Story progress through the trials
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Fearing permadeath. It is a narrative device. Save deletion does not actually happen.
- Ignoring the Furies. Their warnings are the most reliable combat info you get.
- Mashing light attacks at blockers. Kick first.
- Rushing through areas. Lorestones are missable and the environments are the storytelling.
- Playing without headphones. You lose half the design and some audio cues.
- Assuming a stutter is your PC. Try DX11 or toggle ray tracing; the December 2021 patch helped but DX12 can still hitch on some systems.
Advanced Tips
- Counter-heavy rhythm: parry, heavy, dodge out. You rarely need more than that on Hard.
- Use corners. Backing into terrain limits how many enemies can surround you.
- Focus management: do not use it the second it is ready; save it for the moment a second or third enemy joins.
- Rune hunting: when stuck, stand near the door and turn slowly 360 degrees, then check the ground for shadow shapes.
- Illusion arches: if a path vanished, look through the arch from the other side.
FAQ
Does Hellblade really delete your save if you die too much? No. The rot spreads a few times and then stops. It never reaches Senua's head.
How long is Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice? Around 7 to 9 hours for a first playthrough; longer if you hunt every lorestone.
Are lorestones missable? Yes. Once you leave an area you generally cannot go back, and there is no chapter select.
Should I play Hellblade before Senua's Saga: Hellblade II? Yes. The sequel, released May 21, 2024, continues Senua's story directly and assumes you know the first game.
What is the Enhanced update? A free November 2021 PC update with ray tracing, DX12, DLSS and FSR, better materials and LOD, and accessibility options including full remapping and colorblind modes.
Is there a PS5 version? Yes. Hellblade came to PS5 on August 12, 2025. It is also on PS4 and PC (August 2017), Xbox One (April 2018), Switch (April 2019) and Xbox Series X/S (August 2021). Check the PlayStation Store for current upgrade terms if you own the PS4 version.
Is it scary? It is intense psychological horror with disturbing imagery and voices, developed with neuroscientists and people with lived experience of psychosis. Ninja Theory provides mental-health resources on its site.
