A practical guide to MCC on PC: what order to play the six campaigns in, difficulty and skull advice, multiplayer and Exchange progression, mods and the anti-cheat launch option, and fixes for common PC problems.
Researched September 2026 — current as of the February 2025 Easy Anti-Cheat maintenance patch and the February 2026 Exchange update. Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.
Quick Start
- You own six games in one launcher: Halo: Reach, Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, Halo 2: Anniversary, Halo 3, Halo 3: ODST (campaign + Firefight) and Halo 4 - 67 campaign missions in total.
- Each game installs separately. In Steam, the individual titles appear as DLC under the game's Properties, so you can tick only the ones you want and you don't need all of them on disk at once.
- Play in release order or chronological order - both are fine. Chronological starts with Reach; release order starts with CE. See the table below.
- Start on Heroic if you've played shooters before. Normal is easy for PC players; Legendary is the "real" challenge but punishing on first contact, especially in CE and Halo 2.
- Co-op is online and up to four players for every campaign, with drop-in lobbies through the MCC menu.
- Anti-cheat and mods are mutually exclusive. Launch with the "MCC Anti-Cheat Disabled (Mods and Limited Services)" option to use Steam Workshop mods; online matchmaking requires anti-cheat on.
- The Exchange no longer rotates most items. Since the February 2026 update, almost all Exchange cosmetics are permanently available for Spartan Points; only a few bundles rotate quarterly.
- Toggle Anniversary graphics any time in CE and Halo 2 to swap between remastered and original visuals (check Settings, Controls for the key binding).
- Set your FOV and turn off mouse acceleration in each game's settings - MCC stores some settings per game.
The Six Campaigns
Game | Missions | Setting | Notes
Halo: Reach | 10 (+ intro) | Planet Reach, before CE | Noble Team prequel; loadout-based armor abilities
Halo: CE Anniversary | 10 | Installation 04 | Anniversary graphics toggle; the Pistol is the strongest weapon
Halo 2: Anniversary | 15 | Earth, Delta Halo, High Charity | Alternates Master Chief and the Arbiter; new cinematics
Halo 3 | 9 + Epilogue | Earth, the Ark | Equipment items (Bubble Shield, Regenerator, etc.)
Halo 3: ODST | 10 missions + hub (Mombasa Streets) | New Mombasa | Play as the Rookie and squad; open-world hub at night
Halo 4 | 8 + Prologue/Epilogue | Requiem | Prometheans, loadouts; start of the Reclaimer saga
Suggested play orders
Order | Sequence | Why
Release | CE, 2, 3, ODST, Reach, 4 | See how the series evolved; twists land as intended
Chronological | Reach, CE, 2, ODST, 3, 4 | Story order; Reach leads directly into CE's opening
Quick "best of" | CE, 2, 3 | The original trilogy - the core Master Chief story
ODST runs parallel to Halo 2's Earth missions, so it slots between 2 and 3 in chronological order.
Difficulty and Skulls
Difficulty | What changes
Easy | Enemies weak and passive
Normal | Standard balance, good for a story run
Heroic | Enemies smarter, tougher, more aggressive - the intended experience for many fans
Legendary | Enemies hit hard and your shields drop quickly; requires cover and planning
Skulls are modifiers you can toggle in the campaign lobby: some make the game harder (Iron, Famine, Catch, Black Eye, Tough Luck, Thunderstorm), others are cosmetic or silly (Grunt Birthday Party, IWHBYD). Some achievements require collecting skulls in the levels themselves or finishing missions with specific skulls enabled.
Legendary tips:
- Use the Plasma Pistol overcharge to strip Elite shields in one shot, then finish with a headshot (the "noob combo").
- Stay near cover and peek; your shields regenerate if you stop taking damage.
- Don't fight Hunters head-on. Circle them and shoot the exposed orange flesh on their backs.
- Halo 2's Legendary is famously harsh - especially the Jackal snipers in Outskirts and Metropolis. Use the Battle Rifle and move deliberately.
- Save grenades for Grunt groups and Brute packs. Sticking a plasma grenade on a Brute leader breaks the squad.
Game-by-Game Tips
Halo: Reach
- Armor abilities (Sprint, Jet Pack, Armor Lock, Active Camo, Hologram, Drop Shield, Evade) replace equipment. Sprint and Jet Pack are the safest defaults; Armor Lock is a get-out-of-jail button.
- The DMR is your best all-round weapon; the Needle Rifle is a strong Covenant equivalent.
- Firefight is included - great for co-op sessions and challenges.
Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary
- The M6D Pistol is a three-shot kill on many enemies and zooms - it's the best weapon in the campaign.
- The Library and Two Betrayals are the endurance tests; stockpile ammo and grenades before entering.
- CE doesn't support Forge in MCC.
Halo 2: Anniversary
- Dual wielding returns: SMG + Plasma Rifle is a classic combo for shields then health.
- The Battle Rifle is king; the Carbine is its Covenant equivalent.
- Halo 2 Anniversary's remastered multiplayer maps are part of MCC's playlists.
Halo 3
- Equipment (Bubble Shield, Regenerator, Power Drainer, Trip Mine, Radar Jammer) - use them; they're consumable but easy to forget.
- Scarab fights on The Storm and The Covenant are easiest with vehicles and a sniper for the leg joints.
- Forge and Theater work in Halo 3's MCC multiplayer.
Halo 3: ODST
- You're weaker than a Spartan: health bar plus stamina, no shields.
- Use VISR mode at night to highlight enemies and items.
- The Silenced SMG and Automag pistol are your best tools; avoid long fights with Brute Chieftains.
- Firefight here is one of the best co-op modes in the collection.
Halo 4
- Promethean Knights teleport and deploy Watchers; Watchers shield their allies, catch and throw back grenades, and can revive fallen Knights - kill Watchers first.
- The Light Rifle and DMR carry you through most encounters.
Multiplayer
- More than 120 maps across the six games, with playlists for classic Slayer, Big Team Battle, objective modes and game-specific rotations.
- Forge is available in Reach, Halo 2: Anniversary, Halo 3 and Halo 4 (not CE Anniversary or ODST).
- Custom games browser on PC makes it easy to find community games and modes (Infection, Grifball, etc.).
- Ranked playlists: check the MCC menu for the current rotation. Population is smaller than in the collection's peak years, so expect slower queues at off-peak times.
Progression and the Exchange
- Playing matches and campaign earns XP and Spartan Points.
- Spend Spartan Points in the Exchange for helmets, armor, weapon skins, nameplates and more.
- February 2026 update: almost all Exchange content is now available permanently, including previously vaulted items like the Avalanche Sniper Rifle (a Season 4 reward) and several Halo 4 weapon skins.
- A few bundles still rotate on a quarterly schedule (per the February 2026 post):
- Q1 (Jan-Mar): ORION set
- Q2 (Apr-Jun): Grunt Plush back accessory, OGX Magnum skin, X-Pack back accessory
- Q3 (Jul-Sep): Mirage/SPI set
- Q4 (Oct-Dec): OGX Shotgun and Rocket Launcher skins, Taygetus Dory back accessory
- As of late September 2026, the Mirage/SPI set is about to rotate out and the Q4 items will arrive in October.
Mods and the Steam Workshop
- MCC has official mod tools and Steam Workshop support. Popular community releases are highlighted in Halo Waypoint's "Mod Minute" series (recent picks: The Prophets' Hand for Reach, Warthog Rally for CE Anniversary, Zuka 'Zamamee Campaign for CE).
- How to play a mod: subscribe in the Workshop, launch MCC with "MCC Anti-Cheat Disabled (Mods and Limited Services)", then pick the mod in the campaign or custom-game lobby.
- With anti-cheat disabled you can't use matchmaking, but you keep campaign, custom games and modded content.
- The Digsite team also released restored cut content for Halo 2 in 2024 (including the E3 2003 "Earth City" demo) via the Workshop.
PC Settings and Fixes
- Frame rate: MCC supports high frame rates and ultrawide; set your cap per game in video settings.
- FOV: set it in each game's settings - defaults can be narrow for PC.
- Mouse: disable mouse acceleration and set sensitivity per game; each engine feels slightly different.
- Easy Anti-Cheat errors: verify files via Steam, restart, and update. On Steam Deck, the February 2025 known-issues list mentions Easy Anti-Cheat errors in CE campaign missions with anti-cheat on; the official workaround is launching with anti-cheat disabled for campaign.
- Uninstall unused games by unticking them in the DLC section of Steam's Properties to save space; you can reinstall any of the six later.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Starting Legendary blind. CE and Halo 2 Legendary can put new players off the series.
- Ignoring the Plasma Pistol. The overcharge shot is the answer to Elite shields and vehicles.
- Installing every game at once. Install only what you're about to play.
- Trying to use mods with anti-cheat on. Mods need the anti-cheat-disabled launch option.
- Leaving FOV at default. A too-narrow FOV feels bad at a desk.
- Skipping ODST because it's "short". Its night hub and Firefight are highlights of the collection.
Advanced Tips
- Legendary co-op makes the harder missions manageable and is great for achievement hunting.
- LASO (Legendary All Skulls On) runs are the ultimate challenge; attempt them only after you know each level well.
- Theater mode (Reach, Halo 3, Halo 4) lets you review deaths and create clips.
- Melee lunge + shots is still the fastest kill in close range across most MCC titles.
- In Halo 2 multiplayer, the BR is the default workhorse - learn its burst timing.
- Custom game browser: filter for game modes and region to find full lobbies.
FAQ
What's the best order to play MCC? Release order (CE, 2, 3, ODST, Reach, 4) for the original experience; chronological (Reach first) for story order.
How long is the full collection? Six campaigns add up to 67 missions. Expect dozens of hours for a Normal/Heroic run of everything, and much more for Legendary and achievements.
Is multiplayer still active in 2026? Yes, but populations vary by playlist and region. Custom games and community lobbies remain active.
How do I get old seasonal armor? Log in and check the Exchange: since the February 2026 update almost everything is available permanently, with only a few quarterly bundles rotating.
Can I play split-screen on PC? No. PC supports online co-op and multiplayer only.
What about Halo: Campaign Evolved? It's a separate Unreal Engine 5 remake of the original Halo CE campaign by Halo Studios, not part of MCC. It launched on July 28, 2026 on PC, Xbox Series X/S and PS5, adds three new prequel missions, and supports four-player online co-op - but has no competitive multiplayer, so MCC is still where you play CE's multiplayer.
Why can't I matchmake after playing mods? You're still in the anti-cheat-disabled mode. Restart MCC with the standard launch option.
