How Strive's systems actually work in 2026 (Roman Cancels, Burst, Counter Blitz, Wall Break and Positive Bonus), which characters are easiest to start with, how ranked is structured, and a practice plan that gets you out of the "mashing and losing" phase.

Researched September 2026 — current as of Ver. 2.03 (battle version 5.03, released September 24, 2026) and Blazing Pass Duel 3: Steal the Spotlight. Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Quick Start

  • Learn numpad notation. Guides and Dustloop write inputs as numbers on a keypad: 5 is neutral, 6 is forward, 2 is down, 4 is back. So 2K is crouching Kick, 236S is quarter-circle forward plus Slash.
  • Five buttons: P (Punch), K (Kick), S (Slash), H (Heavy Slash) and D (Dust). P and K are fast and short; S and H are slow and strong; D is the Dust attack and part of several system mechanics.
  • Block first, attack second. Hold back to block. Crouch-block (hold down-back) stops lows but not overheads like 5D; stand-block stops overheads but not lows.
  • Tension (the meter) powers everything. Moving forward and attacking builds it; running away drains it. Spend it on Roman Cancels and Overdrives (supers).
  • The Burst gauge is your emergency button. Psych Burst knocks the opponent away during their combo. Don't waste it on the first hit of every combo.
  • Wall Break is a big deal. Combos into the corner eventually break the wall, send the fight to a new stage area, and give the attacker Positive Bonus.
  • Pick a character and stay with them for a while. Beginner-friendly picks: Ky, Sol, May, Giovanna, Ramlethal.
  • Do the Tutorial and Mission mode early. They teach the systems directly, and short Mission drills build habits faster than random matches.
  • Ranked climbs are about defense. Most early losses come from pressing buttons when it's not your turn.
  • Check the Command List in training mode for your character's exact inputs; the system inputs changed in Ver. 2.00 and 2.03.

Good first characters

Character | Style | Why they're newcomer-friendly

Ky Kiske | All-rounder | Stun Edge projectile, Vapor Thrust invincible reversal, straightforward combos. Teaches every fundamental.

Sol Badguy | Aggressive all-rounder | Volcanic Viper reversal, Gun Flame, high damage from simple strings.

May | Rushdown with charge moves | Mr. Dolphin moves are simple to use and great at closing distance.

Giovanna | Fast rushdown | Very fast movement, simple pressure, no complicated resources.

Ramlethal Valentine | Footsies and pressure | Long-range normals that teach spacing.

Potemkin | Grappler | Big, slow, huge damage from Potemkin Buster; teaches patience.

Characters like Zato-1, Happy Chaos, Jack-O', Asuka R♯ and Robo-Ky (with his own gauge system) have extra resources to manage and are better second characters.

Core Systems

Movement and defense

  • Dashing: double-tap forward to run; air dashes are universal. Backdash has brief invincibility at the start.
  • Faultless Defense (FD): hold block plus two attack buttons. It consumes Tension, prevents chip damage, stops R.I.S.C. from rising and pushes the attacker away. Use it to escape pressure. As of Ver. 2.00, FD shows its blocking pose even with no Tension but gives no benefits without meter.
  • Instant Block (IB): block within a very small window just before the hit. The character flashes white, pushback is removed, and you gain extra Tension. Good IBs make tight punishes possible.
  • R.I.S.C. gauge: fills while you block. When it's high, the next hit you take is a counter hit with huge damage. Getting hit or using a Psych Burst resets it.
  • Throws: 4D or 6D up close. They're fast and cause a hard knockdown. Command throws (like Potemkin Buster) can't be broken.

Roman Cancels (RC)

Roman Cancels let you cancel an action by spending Tension. There are four types, determined by what you're doing when you activate:

Type | When | Cost | What it's for

Red RC | While your attack connects | 50% | Extends combos and makes risky moves safe

Purple RC | During recovery when the attack didn't connect | 50% | Resets pressure; Ver. 2.00 added 60 frames of reduced damage and Tension gain if the opponent isn't being hit

Blue RC | From neutral or movement | 50% | Slows the opponent; used for movement and mixups

Yellow RC | While blocking | 25% | Knocks the attacker back to escape pressure

All RCs apply a temporary Tension gain penalty, so spending meter slows how quickly you get it back. As of Ver. 2.00, throws and backdashes can't be Roman Cancelled on whiff.

Burst gauge: Psych Burst, Deflect Shield and Counter Blitz

The Burst gauge sits under your health bar and fills over time and when you take damage.

  • Psych Burst (full gauge, D+S or D+H since Ver. 2.00): a Gold Burst used in neutral fills your Tension if it hits; a Blue Burst used while getting hit or blocking pushes the opponent away with a screen-wide shockwave. Blue Burst is very punishable if baited.
  • Deflect Shield (50%): deflects all blockable attacks for a short window with massive pushback. It's how you escape a mixup mid-blockstring. As of Ver. 2.03 the input is simply D+P or D+K (Ver. 2.00 required holding back as well).
  • Counter Blitz (50%, added in Ver. 2.00): usable during counter hit slowdown to perform a unique follow-up attack. If it ends near the corner, it Wall Breaks. Ver. 2.03 extended the activation window to the end of recovery on counter hits, cut its startup from 10 to 4 frames, and made it 0 on block instead of -10.
  • Wild Assault was removed in Ver. 2.00. Older guides that recommend it are out of date.

Counter hits

Hitting an opponent during their attack startup or recovery causes a counter hit. Mid and large counter hits give bonus hitstun, slowdown, and extra reward. Large counter hits are where many characters get their best damage, and they open up Counter Blitz.

Wall Break and Positive Bonus

Combos in the corner fill the wall. When it breaks (via an Overdrive or a Dust finish), the match moves to a new area, both players reset to neutral, and the attacker gets Positive Bonus: automatic Tension gain and extra Burst regeneration for several seconds. The defender recovers at a disadvantage, so breaking the wall is usually worth it unless you'd rather keep a corner mixup going.

Dust attacks

  • 5D: an overhead; must be stand-blocked. Fully charged, it launches for a Homing Jump combo.
  • 2D: a sweep that knocks down; must be crouch-blocked.

Modes and Progression

  • Tutorial and Mission: system and character drills. Start here.
  • Training: record the dummy, practice punishes and combos.
  • Arcade and Story: single player. Short Story chapters are added over time (Ver. 2.03 added "Nothing Special Happening Anyway").
  • Online: Ranked, casual and lobbies.
  • Blazing Pass: a free reward track with a paid Plus tier ($5.99 per Duel). Duel 3: Steal the Spotlight runs September 24 to December 3, 2026 (16:00 JST), with rewards claimable until December 9. Plus rights don't carry over between Duels. Rewards include Haunted colors, badges, Digital Figure items and W$ (the in-game currency).
  • Fishing and Digital Figures: spend W$ fishing for cosmetics and collectibles. Ver. 2.03 added Robo-Ky Digital Figure content to fishing.

Ranked

Ranked uses tiered ranks up through Platinum, Diamond and Vanquisher. As of Ver. 2.00:

  • Vanquisher has sub-levels based on your rating (DR): Ignis (1600-1699), Virtus (1700-1799) and Vindex (1800+).
  • Imperius is a title for the top 100 players, shown with a numerical rank.
  • Season resets no longer put everyone back to DR 1500; your new starting rating is adjusted from your final rating last season.

Ver. 2.03 extended the win streak bonus to Platinum and Diamond, increased the time before you can be matched with the same opponent (25 to 60 seconds), and shortened ranked server connection time.

Ver. 2.03 (Battle Version 5.03) Highlights

  • Buffed: Sol (Sidewinder Ignited clean hit range), Testament (Stain launch height), Baiken (Kick Start My Heart startup 10F to 7F), I-No (Sultry Performance ground hit stagger), A.B.A (Jealous Rage recovery), Unika (A.C.T.G. Blast-Off launch height).
  • Nerfed: May (Mr. Dolphin knockback), Axl (crouching P recovery 14F to 21F, Winter Mantis hitbox), Potemkin (a forward Heavy Slash recovery and F.D.B.), Millia (Kapel recovery 9F to 12F), Zato-1 (Eddie gauge recovery), Leo (Zweites Kaltes Gestöber knockback), Jam (Choukyaku Kouryuumon reach).
  • Universal: Counter Blitz changes and Deflect Shield input simplification described above; multi-hit invincible moves adjusted for more consistent follow-ups.

Tier lists shift after every battle version; Dustloop keeps a community tier list page if you want the current opinion.

A Practice Plan for New Players

  • Week 1: one character, three tools. Learn one poke (a long normal like 2S or 5K), one anti-air (often 6P, a universal upper-body invincible anti-air) and one reversal or strong special.
  • One bread-and-butter combo. Find a simple combo from 2K or 5K that ends in a knockdown. Use it until it's automatic.
  • Record the dummy doing an overhead and a low. Practice reacting and blocking correctly.
  • Learn two punishes. Find what your fastest attack is and what you can punish after the opponent's blocked Volcanic Viper or similar reversals.
  • Then add meter. Learn one Red RC combo extension and when to Yellow RC out of pressure.
  • Replay your losses. Look for the moment you pressed a button that got counter hit.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Mashing on defense. Most characters' fastest buttons still lose to frame traps; block and look for a gap.
  • Bursting the first hit of every combo. Wait until the opponent has spent resources or is about to take big damage, and watch for bait setups.
  • Never using Faultless Defense. It's the easiest way to get out of long blockstrings, and it spends meter that's otherwise sitting idle.
  • Running away. Retreating drains your Tension and can trigger a Negative Penalty. Strive rewards moving forward.
  • Always jumping in. Everyone has an anti-air; jumping from full screen gets you 6P'd.
  • Only learning combos. Neutral, defense and punishment win more games at low and mid ranks.
  • Following old guides about Wild Assault. It no longer exists as of Ver. 2.00.

Advanced Tips

  • Frame data matters. Dustloop lists startup, on-block advantage and invincibility for every move. Learn which of your moves are safe on block and which of your opponent's aren't.
  • Purple RC pressure got weaker in Ver. 2.00. The proration added when the opponent isn't being hit reduces damage from RC mixups, so value corner carry and Wall Break setups more.
  • Choose when to break the wall. Breaking gives Positive Bonus and a stage transition; keeping them in the corner keeps your mixup. Top players decide based on health and meter.
  • Burst management is a mind game. If your opponent has Burst, consider cashing out with a safe combo; if they don't, go for maximum damage.
  • Use Deflect Shield against high/low mixups now that it's D+P or D+K; it's easier to activate than before.
  • Counter Blitz is now faster and safer after Ver. 2.03. Practice converting counter hits into it in training.
  • Watch replays of top players of your character; the in-game replay browser and YouTube are full of them.
