Everything you need to go from your first unranked games to climbing ranked in the 7.41 era: roles, laning, the map objectives that changed this year, itemization, and the habits that actually win games.
Researched September 2026 — current as of Gameplay Patch 7.41f (mid-September 2026). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.
Quick Start
- Facets are gone. Patch 7.41 (March 24, 2026) removed the Facet system entirely. Some Facet effects were folded into innate abilities, Aghanim's Scepter, Aghanim's Shard or talents; the rest were deleted. Old guides that tell you "pick Facet 2" are outdated.
- Pick a role and learn 3 heroes for it. Dota rewards depth. Beginner-friendly picks: Wraith King or Sniper (carry), Viper or Dragon Knight (mid), Axe or Bristleback (offlane), Lion, Witch Doctor or Ogre Magi (support).
- Last-hitting is your income. Only the killing blow on a creep gives gold. Practice in a Demo/Lobby for 10 minutes a day; aim for 40+ last hits by 10:00 as a core.
- Deny. You can attack your own creeps under 50% HP to steal gold and experience from the enemy. Right-click (or A-click) your own creep to deny.
- Buy a Town Portal Scroll and keep it. Teleporting to defend towers or join fights is the most important "item" in the game.
- Wards win games. Supports should always have Observer and Sentry Wards on cooldown; cores should buy a ward when a support can't.
- Watch the minimap every few seconds. Most deaths come from not noticing missing enemy heroes.
- Don't fight Roshan or Tormentors blind. They move with the day/night cycle now (see Map Objectives).
- Mute early, not late. Chat toxicity loses more games than bad drafts. The Scoreboard lets you mute voice/chat per player.
Roles and Positions
Dota uses five positions, numbered by farm priority (1 gets the most gold, 5 the least).
Position | Lane | Job | Example heroes
1 - Carry | Safe lane | Farm, scale, win late fights | Anti-Mage, Morphling, Medusa, Wraith King, Phantom Assassin
2 - Mid | Middle | Win the 1v1, rotate with runes, snowball | Invoker, Storm Spirit, Shadow Fiend, Leshrac, Viper
3 - Offlane | Offlane | Survive vs. the carry, create space, initiate | Axe, Centaur Warrunner, Primal Beast, Underlord, Night Stalker
4 - Soft support | Offlane/roam | Gank, stack camps, fight for runes | Bounty Hunter, Spirit Breaker, Tusk, Earth Spirit
5 - Hard support | Safe lane | Protect the carry, ward, pull, save teammates | Witch Doctor, Dazzle, Lion, Ancient Apparition, Crystal Maiden
The safe lane is bottom for Radiant and top for Dire. The offlane is the opposite.
Core Mechanics
Controls worth changing on day one
Setting | Recommendation | Why
Quickcast | Enable for most abilities | Faster reaction; you'll learn targeting quickly
Attack-move (A-click) | Bind and use it | Stops you from accidentally chasing wrong targets
Select Hero | Bind to F1 (default) | Recenters camera
Courier hotkeys | Bind "deliver items" | Couriers save you walking trips
Camera grip / Edge pan | Use both | Map awareness
Auto-attack | "Standard" or "Never" for supports | Prevents drawing tower/creep aggro
Right-click to force attack | Enable | Lets you deny allied creeps with a right-click instead of A-click
Gold and experience
- Reliable vs. unreliable gold: You lose unreliable gold on death. Spend before fights.
- Experience comes from nearby creep deaths, kills and Wisdom Shrines. Staying in lane range matters even if you're not last-hitting.
- Buyback costs gold and has a cooldown; late game, always keep buyback money on your carry.
- Stacking: Pull a neutral camp at the :53-:55 second mark so another set spawns. Supports stacking for the carry is one of the highest-value things you can do.
Runes
- Bounty Runes give gold to your whole team.
- Power Runes (Haste, Double Damage, Invisibility, Regeneration, Arcane, Illusion, Shield) spawn at the river on a timer; mids rotate with them.
- Water Runes in the early game refill health/mana for mids.
- Wisdom Shrines give a big experience boost. In 7.41 the payout changed to 200 base, then 300 more per subsequent shrine, and the capture countdown now reverses if the opposing team enters instead of pausing.
Map objectives (changed in 7.41)
Objective | What it gives | 7.41 notes
Roshan | Aegis of the Immortal, later Cheese, Aghanim's Blessing, Refresher Shard | Pit alternates by time: top pit during the day, bottom pit at night
Tormentor | Aghanim's Shard for the team | Now spawns on low ground near the Lotus Pools. Daytime: Radiant southeast corner; nighttime: Dire northwest corner
Lotus Pools | Healing Lotuses | Capture countdowns reverse when the enemy contests
Towers / Barracks | Map control, gold | Losing Barracks gives the enemy stronger creeps
Siege creeps also gained their first extra unit at 30:00 instead of 35:00 in 7.41, so pushing pressure starts a bit earlier.
Laning
- Creep equilibrium: Keep the wave near your tower by denying and not over-hitting. A wave pushed to the enemy tower exposes you to ganks.
- Harass when the enemy goes for a last hit. They can't dodge while committed to an attack.
- Pulling (pos 5): Pull the small or large camp into your lane creeps to reset the wave and deny XP. Learn your side's pull timings in a lobby.
- Offlane survival: Your goal is levels, not farm. Getting level 6 without dying is a win against a strong safe lane.
- Regen: Tango, Healing Salve, Clarity and Enchanted Mango are your lane lifeline. Supports should bring extra and share.
Itemization
How to think about items
- Survive the lane (regen, Magic Stick/Wand, boots).
- Solve your biggest problem (mana, mobility, magic damage, being disabled).
- Counter the enemy (Black King Bar vs. heavy disables, Monkey King Bar vs. evasion, Silver Edge vs. passives, Spirit Vessel vs. regen/heal, Force Staff/Glimmer Cape as save items).
7.41 item changes to know
- New shop items: Chasm Stone, Shawl, Splintmail, Wizard Hat, Consecrated Wraps, Crella's Crozier, Essence Distiller, Specialist's Array and Hydra's Breath.
- Removed: Cornucopia and Eternal Shroud.
- Reworks: Arcane Boots now builds from a Wizard Hat; Bloodstone uses Veil of Discord in its recipe; Bloodthorn and Drum of Endurance recipes changed.
- 7.41f adjusted costs on several core items and toned down lifesteal on Mask of Madness and Satanic. Check the in-game shop for exact current prices rather than older build guides.
Neutral items and enchantments
- Tier 1 neutral items are now available from 0:00 (was 5:00).
- Neutral items are crafted with Madstones dropped by neutrals, and you pick an enchantment on top. From 7.41 enchantments are no longer random; choices are based on your hero's primary attribute plus some universal options, with five choices at Tiers 2-5.
- 7.41 added a batch of new neutrals such as Forager's Kit, Stonefeather Satchel, Dagger of Ristul, Possessed Mask, Partisan's Brand, Spellslinger, Stormcrafter, Conjurer's Catalyst, Dandelion Amulet, Enchanter's Bauble, Prophet's Pendulum, Harmonizer and Witchbane. Whisper of the Dread was removed.
Current Meta Snapshot (7.41e/7.41f)
Treat this as a starting point; stat sites disagree week to week and pub win rates swing after every letter patch.
Role | Heroes flagged as strong by stat sites in Aug-Sept 2026
Carry | Morphling, Medusa, Anti-Mage, Shadow Fiend, Phantom Assassin
Mid | Invoker, Storm Spirit, Leshrac, Keeper of the Light
Offlane | Enigma, Primal Beast, Centaur Warrunner, Underlord, Night Stalker
Soft support | Bounty Hunter, Spirit Breaker
Hard support | Witch Doctor, Dazzle, Ancient Apparition, Treant Protector
Notes:
- 7.41f reportedly nerfed Treant Protector (lower base Intelligence, Leech Seed mana cost) and Shadow Fiend's per-soul Shadowraze damage, and buffed Anti-Mage and Ursa.
- Invoker stays popular at high MMR but is very hard to learn. If you want mid wins now, a simpler hero you've mastered beats a meta hero you haven't.
Drafting Basics
- Balance damage types. A team with only physical damage folds to Ghost Scepter and armor; all-magic teams fold to Black King Bar and Pipe of Insight.
- Have a way to start fights (Axe, Enigma, Centaur Warrunner, Primal Beast) and a way to stop them (stuns, silences, saves).
- Last-pick your mid or carry when you can; they are the most counterable.
- Don't pick two heroes that both need to farm the same space (e.g. two farming cores in the safe lane).
Mid and Late Game
- After laning, group around objectives. The team that takes towers after winning a fight gets further ahead; the team that farms after winning a fight lets the enemy recover.
- Push lanes before you do objectives so the enemy has to choose between defending and contesting.
- Smoke of Deceit makes your group invisible on the map; use it for ganks and to set up Roshan.
- High ground is dangerous without Aegis or a big item lead. Siege instead of diving if the enemy has defensive spells ready.
- Always know the buyback status of the enemy carry before committing to a throne push.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Following a Facet-based build. Anything written before March 2026 may reference Facets that no longer exist.
- Carries leaving the lane too early to fight. Get your core item first unless the fight is at your tower.
- Supports buying damage items instead of wards, Smoke and saves. Glimmer Cape and Force Staff win more fights than a Kaya.
- Dying with unspent unreliable gold. Buy a component before walking into danger.
- Chasing kills into the fog. You'll lose the chase and your life.
- Ignoring stacks. A carry who clears two stacked camps at minute 10 is a full item ahead.
- Forgetting that Roshan and Tormentor spots now depend on day/night. Check the clock before rotating.
- Fighting without Black King Bar vs. heavy stun lineups. One BKB often decides the game.
Advanced Tips
- Creep aggro: Right-clicking an enemy hero draws creep aggro; click back on a creep to reset it. Use this to pull the wave toward your tower.
- Tower aggro reset: If a tower targets you, right-click an enemy creep in range to make it switch.
- Cancel animations to bait last hits and harass without committing.
- Block the first creep wave by walking in front of it so it meets closer to your tower (7.41 also shifted the default meeting point toward the offlane early on, with temporary creep speed modifiers until 7:30).
- Time rune spawns and camp stacks with the in-game clock; set a habit of checking at :45.
- Keep a TP ready as the carry to join fights after farming a far lane.
- Farm patterns: Lane, then jungle camp, then next lane. Never stand in one place too long once the enemy has vision.
- Replay your losses. Watch 5 minutes around each of your deaths; most have the same cause.
Ranked Tips
- Ranked is gated behind account requirements (playtime and a linked phone number); the exact thresholds are shown in-game on the Play Dota screen.
- Queue for one or two roles you're good at; role queue exists and matters.
- Behavior Score affects your matchmaking. Avoid abandons, reports and griefing.
- Play in short sessions. Stop after two losses in a row; tilt costs more MMR than any meta shift.
- Early in a new letter patch, look up which heroes got buffed; they tend to overperform for a week or two.
FAQ
Are Facets coming back? No official plans as of 7.41f. The system was removed in 7.41 and its useful parts were moved into innate abilities, Scepter, Shard and talents.
What's the easiest role to learn? Position 5 support or offlane with a durable hero like Axe. You learn the map and fights without needing perfect farming.
How many last hits should I get? As a core, 40-50 by 10 minutes is decent for learners; high-level carries often hit 70-80+.
Where is Roshan right now? It depends on day/night: top pit during the day, bottom pit at night (since 7.41).
Where do Tormentors spawn? On low ground near the Lotus Pools. Daytime at the Radiant southeast corner; nighttime at the Dire northwest corner.
Is Invoker good for beginners? Not really. He's strong in 7.41f at high MMR, but his kit is the hardest in the game. Learn something simpler first.
Why can't I find Cornucopia or Eternal Shroud? Both were removed in 7.41.
