A full guide to surviving Banoi in Dead Island Definitive Edition: choosing a character, how weapons, mods and skill trees work, act-by-act priorities, co-op, arenas and achievement tips.

Researched September 2026 — current as of the Definitive Edition's last patch (October 2016); the game is complete and no longer updated. Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

What the Definitive Edition Includes

  • The remastered 2011 campaign (improved graphics, models and lighting).
  • All previously released DLC, including the Bloodbath Arena mode and the Ryder White story add-on.
  • The October 2016 patch restored missing blueprints/mods (BBQ, Exploding Meat, Ripper), fixed collectible placement and improved co-op stability.
  • The side-scrolling spin-off Dead Island: Retro Revenge was released alongside the Definitive Edition in 2016 (sold separately on Steam), and Dead Island: Riptide Definitive Edition is the direct sequel.

Quick Start

  • Pick the character whose weapon type you like. Every character can use everything, but their skill trees boost one style.
  • Kick everything. Kicking knocks zombies down or back and costs little stamina. A knocked-down zombie is a free head stomp or head hit.
  • Watch the stamina bar. Swinging drains it; at zero you can barely fight. Short bursts, then back off.
  • Weapons break. Repair at workbenches before they hit zero; broken weapons hit terribly.
  • Money is your crafting resource. Repairs, upgrades and mods all cost cash. Loot every suitcase and sell junk.
  • Dying costs money. You respawn nearby, but you lose some cash. Don't panic-spend and then die.
  • Loot and enemies scale with your level. Keep picking up new weapons as you level; a great level-5 weapon falls off.
  • Do side quests in Act 1. They give XP, weapons, blueprints and money that make the rest of the game easier.
  • Play co-op if you can. Up to four players, drop-in, with shared quest progress — it's how the game was designed.

Choosing a Character

Character | Specialty | Playstyle

Xian Mei | Sharp weapons (knives, machetes, katanas) | Fast, dismemberment-heavy, great damage

Sam B | Blunt weapons (bats, hammers, clubs) | Tanky, knockdowns, easiest for beginners

Logan Carter | Throwing weapons | Built around thrown weapons, safer at range

Purna Jackson | Firearms | Weaker early (guns appear later), strong late game

For a first run: Sam B or Xian Mei. Melee is the core of Dead Island, and firearms are not available early. Purna shines in the second half and in co-op.

Skill Trees

Each character has three trees:

Tree | What it improves

Fury | The character's rage/special attack mode, filled by dealing damage

Combat | Weapon damage, stamina, character-specific weapon bonuses

Survival | Health, looting, money, crafting, lockpicking, utility

You get a skill point each level. General priorities:

  • Put early points into skills that improve your specialty weapons and stamina.
  • Survival skills that increase money found and reduce repair costs pay off all game.
  • Fury abilities are "oh no" buttons for crowds and special infected; unlock them early.
  • Look for the lockpicking skill line in Survival: many chests and rooms need it.

Combat Fundamentals

  • Aim for heads and limbs. Sharp weapons sever limbs (armless zombies can't grab; legless ones crawl). Blunt weapons break bones and knock down.
  • Stomp downed zombies — it's a guaranteed kill on most regulars.
  • Kick to create space, especially against groups and fast Infected.
  • Throw weapons at Suiciders and anything you shouldn't touch.
  • Use the environment: gas canisters explode, and vehicles are excellent for clearing roads.
  • Analog combat controls are an optional mode where you swing with mouse/stick direction. Not required, but there's an achievement for it in the arena.

Enemy types

Enemy | Threat | How to handle it

Walker | Slow, dangerous in groups | Kick, head strike, stomp

Infected | Fast runners that scream to call others | Kick when they lunge, then strike the head

Thug | Big, hits hard, knocks you down | Attack its arms/legs, dodge its swing, fight near the edge of its reach

Ram | Charging armored zombie in a straitjacket | Sidestep the charge, hit from behind

Suicider | Explodes near you | Kill from range: throw a weapon, shoot, or throw a grenade

Butcher | Fast, aggressive bone-blade zombie | Fight with your best weapon, use knockback, avoid fighting it in the open

Floater | Bloated, spits toxic bile | Close in fast; avoid bile pools

Drowned | Emerge from water | Keep away from shorelines when low on health

Human enemies | Armed bandits later on | Use cover, get guns of your own, close distance with melee

Weapons, Workbenches and Mods

  • Rarity: weapons come in color-coded tiers; the best named tier is Exceptional (there's an achievement for looting five).
  • Workbench actions: Repair (restore durability), Upgrade (raise stats, up to three times), and Modify (apply a mod from a blueprint).
  • Blueprints come from quests and exploration. Each mod needs specific parts (tape, batteries, nails, etc.) you loot.
  • Mods add elemental effects (fire, electricity, poison, bleeding) or explosive options. Electric and fire mods are standouts for crowd control. Mods named in the official patch notes include BBQ, Exploding Meat and Ripper.
  • Upgrade and mod the weapon you'll keep. Don't spend on something you'll replace in a level.
  • Durability tip: repair when a weapon's condition is low but not broken; broken weapons still work but do poor damage.

Healing

  • Medkits (small/large), food and drinks heal.
  • Large medkits are best saved for boss-style fights and emergencies.
  • Medkits don't restore past full health — don't waste a large one on a scratch (unless you want the joke achievement).

Act-by-Act Outline

Act I: Royal Palms Resort

  • You start in the resort after the outbreak. Hubs are safe zones with a workbench and trader.
  • Do the side quests: they introduce blueprints and give lots of early money and XP.
  • Learn to fight Infected and Thugs here; find a vehicle for faster travel along the beach.

Act II: Moresby

  • The city is denser and more dangerous; more human enemies and firearms.
  • Purna and gun-heavy builds start to come alive.
  • Explore rooftops and stores for supplies and collectibles.

Act III: The Jungle

  • Open, vehicle-friendly areas, villages and a research laboratory storyline.
  • Watch out for more special infected and human enemies.

Act IV: The Prison

  • Hard, tight fights with many humans and specials. Bring firearms, grenades and your best-modded melee weapon.
  • The story wraps up here (Act IV completion is an achievement).

Ryder White add-on

Included in the Definitive Edition. It plays as a separate story from Ryder White's perspective; do it after the main campaign.

Bloodbath Arena

A wave-based survival mode with four arenas. Good for XP, practice and achievements:

  • Death Incarnate: survive wave 30.
  • Morituri te salutant: survive 30 consecutive waves with a co-op partner.
  • Looking for trouble: survive 5 waves in each of the 4 arenas.
  • Gladiator school: survive 15 consecutive waves with each character.
  • Out of honey? Chew bees!: survive 5 waves with fists and legs only.

Achievement Tips

Achievement | Tip

How many days exactly? | Play at least 28 days after first launch — just launch the game again after four weeks

Gotta find'em all / Nearly there | 60 and 120 collectibles; sweep each area as you go

There and back again | Explore the whole island — uncover all map areas

Right 4 Life | Complete Act I with four different characters (co-op speeds this up a lot)

People Person | Play with 10 different co-op partners for 15 minutes each

Ah! Spoiled meat! | Kill a Butcher with an axe

Oh, no you don't | Kill a Ram using the tackle skill from your skill tree

First! | Kill a Suicider with a grenade

Complete a set | In one arena round, kill an Infected, Suicider, Ram, Butcher, Floater and Walker

School of hard knocks | Reach level 50

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Holding a weapon until it breaks. Repair early; broken gear feels awful.
  • Swinging at zero stamina. You'll get swarmed. Back off and kick.
  • Hoarding cash instead of upgrading your main weapon.
  • Spending on every weapon. Only mod what you keep.
  • Ignoring side quests in Act I, then feeling underpowered in Moresby.
  • Meleeing Suiciders. Always from range.
  • Fighting in open water when Drowned are around.

Advanced Tips

  • Electric mods stun groups — a modded machete or bat can carry you through Act II.
  • Throw your melee weapon at an Infected mid-charge, then pick it back up.
  • Vehicles handle road hordes safely and give the "Karma-geddon" achievement.
  • Co-op roles: mix specialties — a Sam B knocking zombies down while a Xian Mei dismembers them is far faster than four players of the same style.
  • Fury is for specials, not trash mobs: save it for Butchers, Thugs and packs.
  • Level up before Act IV with side quests; the prison is the hardest part of the campaign.

FAQ

Which character is best? Xian Mei for sharp-weapon damage, Sam B for survivability. Purna is best late and in co-op.

Is it better than the original Dead Island? It's the same game remastered, with all DLC included and later fixes.

Is there co-op? Yes, up to four players online, drop-in/drop-out.

How many collectibles are there? The achievements track 60 and 120 found; there are more than that on the island.

Where do I get guns? Later in the campaign, starting mainly in Act II. Ammo is limited — melee remains your main tool.

What order should I play the series? Dead Island Definitive Edition, then Riptide Definitive Edition, then Dead Island 2.
