How to get good at Super Meat Boy: movement technique, the chapter structure, Dark World and A+ grades, bandages and every Steam-version character unlock, warp zones, and a route to the Golden God achievement.
Researched September 2026 — current as of the Steam PC version (Team Meat's last official Steam posts in 2023 and 2024 were merchandise news, not game patches). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.
Quick Start
- Use a controller. Team Meat built the game around a gamepad. Keyboard works, but the analog feel of run and jump timing is much easier on a pad.
- Hold run almost all the time. Meat Boy's speed is what carries his jumps across gaps; the walk speed is only for fine positioning.
- Jump height depends on how long you hold jump. Tap for short hops, hold for full height. This is the single most important skill.
- Wall jumps are free. Touch a wall and press jump to kick off. Chaining wall jumps up a shaft is the core of most levels.
- Dying is instant and free. Levels restart immediately with no lives (except in retro warp zones). Expect hundreds of deaths per chapter; the replay at the end of each level shows all of them at once.
- Levels can be done in any order within a chapter. Beating enough of them unlocks the chapter boss.
- A+ unlocks the Dark World. Finish a level under its par time for an A+ and you unlock its much harder Dark World twin.
- Bandages unlock characters. Grab them for new playable characters, and note some bandages can only be reached by specific characters.
- Warp zones hide in some levels. Look for a swirling portal on odd-looking paths; they lead to retro 3-life stages and indie-game homages.
Movement and Controls
Action | What it does | Tip
Move | Left/right movement and air steering | D-pad gives cleaner inputs than a stick for some players
Jump | Hold for height, tap for short hops | Also performs wall jumps
Run | Hold to sprint | Keep it held by default
Pause | Menu, restart, exit to map | Rebind keys in the options if the defaults feel awkward
Check the in-game controls screen for your exact keyboard or gamepad bindings; many players move run to a shoulder button or trigger so they never have to think about it.
Technique checklist
- Run before jumping. A standing jump barely clears anything. Build speed on every runway.
- Short-hop control. Release jump early to cut your arc. Saws above you mean short hops.
- Air control. You can steer mid-air strongly. Pressing away from a wall after a wall jump gives distance; holding toward the wall gives height on a single wall.
- Single-wall climbing. Hold into the wall and keep jumping to climb a single surface; release direction briefly to gain distance when needed.
- Momentum carries. Letting go of run mid-air slows you, which can save you from overshooting a landing.
- Slide on walls. Holding into a wall slows your fall; use it to wait for saw timing.
- Crumble blocks crumble once. Keep moving.
Chapter Structure
# | Chapter | Theme | Notes
1 | The Forest | Tutorial ramp: saws, crumble blocks, wall jumps | Boss: Lil' Slugger
2 | The Hospital | Needle pits, crumbling blocks, tighter wall jumps | Boss: C.H.A.D.
3 | The Salt Factory | Salt, moving saws and missiles | Boss fight
4 | Hell | Lava, fire and punishing precision | Boss fight
5 | Rapture | The steepest difficulty ramp before the finale | Boss fight
6 | The End | Short final chapter | Boss: Dr. Fetus
7 | Cotton Alley | Post-game chapter played as Bandage Girl | Unlocked after beating the story
Bonus | The Kid's Xmas | Holiday chapter on the PC version | Has two dedicated achievements
Boss tips
- Lil' Slugger chases you through the level; do not stop, and learn the route.
- C.H.A.D. is a giant blood-and-guts creature; move constantly and keep to the path the level lays out.
- Chase bosses generally: these are memorization. Die, learn the next 5 seconds, repeat.
- Dr. Fetus is a multi-phase finale; learn each phase separately rather than trying to see the end on attempt one.
A+ Grades and the Dark World
Every level has a par time. Beat it for an A+, which unlocks that level's Dark World version: same layout concept, far nastier hazards. Dark World levels have their own bandages and are required for "The Real End" (beat the Dark World) and Golden God.
A+ tips:
- The par time usually assumes you take the obvious fast route and skip the bandage. Do bandage runs and A+ runs separately.
- Watch the ghost-style death replay at the end: it shows where you hesitate.
- Look for shortcuts over walls instead of through corridors.
Bandages and Characters
Bandages sit in hard-to-reach spots. The total you have collected unlocks characters. Confirmed Steam-version thresholds from the achievement list:
Character | From | Unlock
Head Crab | Half-Life | 10 bandages (Steam exclusive)
Josef, the Machinarium Robot | Machinarium | 30 bandages
Naija | Aquaria | 50 bandages
RunMan | RunMan: Race Around the World | 70 bandages
Captain Viridian | VVVVVV | 90 bandages
Mr. Minecraft | Minecraft | 100 bandages
Warp-zone characters are unlocked by clearing specific warp zones instead:
Character | From | Notes
CommanderVideo | BIT.TRIP series | Can float briefly in mid-air
Jill | Jill of the Jungle | "The Bootlicker" achievement
Ogmo | Jumper | Double jump
Flywrench | Flywrench | Flappy flight movement
The Kid | I Wanna Be the Guy | Double jump
Bandage Girl becomes playable through Cotton Alley. Character roster differs between platforms, so console guides may list characters the Steam version lacks.
Why characters matter: some bandages are only reachable with a specific character's ability (a double jump, floating, or flying). If a bandage seems impossible, switch characters.
Warp Zones
Warp zones are hidden portals inside certain levels.
- Retro warp zones use a pixel-art filter and give you three lives. Lose them all and you are kicked out.
- Character warp zones are homages to other indie games; beating them unlocks the corresponding guest character.
- Achievements: "Nostalgia" (one retro zone), "Living In the Past" (5), "Old School" (10), and "Retro Rampage" (all).
Golden God Route (100%)
Golden God ("100% the game") is held by only a few percent of Steam players. Suggested order:
- Beat the light world ("The End") to learn the mechanics and unlock Cotton Alley.
- Collect easy bandages as you go; they unlock the characters you need.
- Clear warp zones for the warp-zone characters and retro achievements.
- Push A+ times chapter by chapter to open the Dark World.
- Beat the Dark World ("The Real End") and grab Dark World bandages with the right characters.
- Save the deathless chapter achievements for last. "Wood Boy" (Forest without dying) through "Impossible Boy" (Cotton Alley Dark World without dying) are the hardest in the list. Practice each level until it is automatic, then do the chapter in one clean session.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Releasing run. Most "impossible" gaps are just run-less jumps.
- Holding jump too long near ceilings. Short hops are your friend under saws.
- Trying to A+ and bandage at the same time. Separate goals.
- Brute-forcing a bandage with the wrong character. Check if a double jump or float solves it.
- Playing tired. Precision platformers punish frustration; short sessions go further.
- Keyboard ghosting. Some keyboards drop simultaneous key presses (run plus jump plus direction). Use a controller if inputs feel eaten.
Advanced Tips
- Learn in chunks. Beat a level by mastering the first third, then the next, instead of racing to the end each attempt.
- Wall-jump rhythm. Consistent press timing on long wall-jump shafts beats reacting to each wall.
- Use the replay. The swarm of dead Meat Boys shows where you consistently die; that section is the one to drill.
- Speedrunners' route knowledge. Many levels have skips over walls; watching a speedrun of a chapter shows the intended A+ lines.
- Level editor and Super Meat World. The PC version got a level editor in 2011 (the store page promised it alongside the level portal) and the Super Meat World portal for community levels. Service availability for online level sharing has varied over the years, so treat it as a bonus.
FAQ

Should I play with a keyboard or controller? Controller. The game was designed for one, and keyboard ghosting can drop inputs.
How do I unlock the Dark World? Get an A+ (beat the par time) on a light world level to unlock its Dark World version.
How do I unlock Head Crab? Collect 10 bandages. It is a Steam-exclusive character.
What is Golden God? The 100% completion achievement: all levels, bandages, warp zones and characters.
Is there a sequel? Yes, Super Meat Boy Forever (2020), an auto-runner successor. The original remains the classic precision platformer.
Does Super Meat Boy work on Mac and Linux? Yes; the PC game was ported to macOS in 2011 and Linux in December 2011.
