A spoiler-light walkthrough outline, boss strategies, the Duke's economy (upgrades, cooking, treasures), collectibles, difficulty advice, Mercenaries, and the Winters' Expansion.
Researched September 2026 — current as of the Gold Edition / Winters' Expansion content (October 2022), the final major update. Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.
Series context: Resident Evil Village (2021) is the direct sequel to Resident Evil 7 and continues Ethan Winters' story. Capcom's next mainline game, Resident Evil Requiem, launched on February 27, 2026, and a remake titled Resident Evil Veronica is announced for 2027. Village is still the natural next step after RE7.
Quick Start
- Explore the village every time you return. The central village hub opens up as you progress. Revisit for treasures, animals, and locked areas.
- The Duke is your best friend. He sells ammo, upgrades, and recipes, buys treasures, and cooks dishes for permanent stat boosts.
- Block. Holding block drastically reduces damage from melee enemies. Blocking and then pushing away gives space.
- Don't sell treasures you can combine. Some treasures are worth far more when combined with a gem or piece.
- Hunt animals. Chickens, pigs, goats, and fish give ingredients for cooking. Dishes permanently raise health, block, or speed.
- Upgrade one main weapon heavily. Spreading Lei across every gun leaves all of them mediocre.
- Shoot the goats of warding. Twenty goat statues are hidden in the game. Destroying them counts toward an achievement.
- Save at typewriters often, especially on higher difficulties.
Difficulties
Difficulty | Notes
Casual | Generous ammo; enemies are forgiving
Standard | Intended experience for most players
Hardcore | Tougher enemies, less ammo; good for series veterans
Village of Shadows | Unlocked after beating the game; enemy placements change and damage is much higher
Core Systems
Lei and the Duke
- Lei is the currency. You find it on enemies, in crates, and by selling treasures.
- The Duke appears at various points in each area. He sells ammo, healing, crafting recipes, weapons, and weapon upgrades.
- Selling treasures is the main money source. Combining certain treasures (e.g., adding gems to a setting) raises their value.
- Cooking. Hunt animals for meat and catch fish. Bring the right ingredients to the Duke to cook dishes that give permanent bonuses, such as more max health, stronger blocking, or faster movement. Hunting is optional but very worth it on higher difficulties.
Crafting
- Collect crafting materials like chemical fluid, herbs, gunpowder, and metal scraps.
- Recipes (some bought from the Duke) let you make healing items, ammo, and explosives.
- On higher difficulties, crafting is a key resource buffer.
Inventory
Your inventory is a briefcase grid, as in Resident Evil 4. Upgrade it at the Duke for more space. Arrange items to fit.
Combat
- Lycans (werewolf-like enemies) are fast and attack in groups. Block and push away; shoot legs to stagger.
- Blocking reduces damage and works against most melee. A timed push creates space.
- Headshots are efficient against most enemies.
- Knife attacks conserve ammo on weak enemies and objects.
- Mines, pipe bombs, and explosive weapons handle groups.
Weapons
Type | Weapons | Notes
Handguns | LEMI, M1911, V61 Custom, USM-AI | The LEMI is your starter; several upgrade paths
Shotguns | M1897, W870, SYG-12 | Close-range power, essential for Lycans
Magnums | M1851 Wolfsbane | Heavy damage for bosses
Rifles | F2 Rifle (sniper), plus an automatic rifle later on | The F2 is your long-range option; check the Duke's stock late in the game for more
Explosives | GM 79 (grenade launcher), mines, pipe bombs | Crowd control
Bonus | Rocket Pistol, Handcannon (Extra Content Shop) | Unlockable after completion
Upgrade priority: a shotgun (M1897 or W870), then a handgun, then the Wolfsbane for boss fights. Most weapons have an "exclusive upgrade" for a large final boost.
Walkthrough Outline (spoiler-light)
- The Village — Ethan arrives. Early encounters with Lycans and a big siege sequence. Learn to block.
- Castle Dimitrescu — Lady Alcina Dimitrescu and her daughters Bela, Cassandra, and Daniela. The daughters are vulnerable to cold; open windows to expose them.
- House Beneviento — Donna Beneviento and her doll Angie. A weaponless psychological horror section.
- The Reservoir — Salvatore Moreau and his monstrous transformation.
- Heisenberg's Factory — Karl Heisenberg's machines and soldats. Heavy action.
- Finale — Mother Miranda and the endgame.
Between major areas, return to the village to explore newly opened areas, fight optional mini-bosses, and cash in treasures.
Boss Tips
- The Dimitrescu daughters. Break a window to let cold air in; they become vulnerable. Then shoot.
- Lady Dimitrescu. Her final form is fought on the roof. Keep moving and use your strongest weapons; the fight rewards high-damage upgrades.
- Moreau. Aim for his weak spots when they're exposed. Keep your distance from his lunges.
- Heisenberg. The final fight is very different; mechanics are explained in-game.
- Mother Miranda. Multiple phases. Stock up on healing and ammo beforehand; use your strongest weapon.
Collectibles and Missables
- Goats of Warding — 20 hidden goat statues across the game. Destroying one unlocks "Cynic"; destroying all of them unlocks "Heretic."
- Treasures — some are one-of-a-kind in areas you can't return to. Grab them before moving on.
- Files — story documents; nothing gameplay-critical but good lore.
- Recipes — some cooked dishes require meat from specific animals. Hunt before leaving the village.
- Weapons — some are only available in specific windows. If the Duke offers something, it may not stay.
Extra Content Shop
Completing the game and challenges earns CP (challenge points) you spend on:
- Infinite ammo for weapons.
- Bonus weapons such as the Rocket Pistol and Handcannon.
- Concept art, figures, and models.
Tip: infinite ammo on your favorite weapon makes higher-difficulty playthroughs far more fun.
The Mercenaries
- Unlocked after beating the story.
- Arcade stages: clear enemies within a time limit.
- Orbs grant temporary bonuses; pick the ones that fit your weapons.
- Ranks are based on score. Chain kills to keep your combo alive, and pick up time bonuses to extend the run. High ranks count toward challenges and CP; the "Legendary Cowboy" achievement needs at least an S rank on every stage, and "Combo King" needs a 30-kill combo.
- Buy upgrades between areas. Each stage is split into areas with a Duke stop between them; spend on the weapon you're using most.
- Pick orbs to match your loadout. If you rely on a shotgun, shotgun damage orbs beat general ones.
- Additional Orders (Winters' Expansion) adds playable Chris Redfield, Lady Dimitrescu, and Karl Heisenberg with new stages.
Winters' Expansion / Gold Edition
Released October 28, 2022. Includes:
- Shadows of Rose — a third-person story set years after the main game, playing as Rose, Ethan's daughter.
- Third-person mode for the main campaign.
- Mercenaries: Additional Orders — new characters and stages.
If you're buying fresh, the Gold Edition bundles everything.
PC Notes
- Settings. The RE Engine scales well. If you get stutter, lower texture quality before other settings; VRAM is usually the bottleneck.
- Ray tracing and FidelityFX options are available on PC; turn off ray tracing first if performance dips.
- FOV. Village offers a field-of-view slider, which helps if first-person makes you queasy.
- Mouse and keyboard. Block is bound to a key by default; move it somewhere comfortable, since you'll use it constantly against Lycans.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Selling treasures before combining them. You'll lose a lot of value.
- Ignoring hunting. Permanent health and block upgrades matter on Hardcore and Village of Shadows.
- Upgrading everything evenly. Focus on one or two main weapons.
- Not blocking. Lycans overwhelm players who only shoot.
- Hoarding ammo until the end. Use it; the Duke sells more.
Advanced Tips
- Speedrun-friendly unlocks. Completing the game unlocks bonuses; use infinite ammo for challenge runs.
- Village of Shadows. Enemy placement changes. Prioritize defense upgrades from cooking.
- Exclusive upgrades give the biggest jumps. Plan your Lei toward them.
- Crafting mines handles tricky groups efficiently.
- Explore every area fully before moving on. Many areas lock after the story advances.
