A practical guide to three-starring kitchens in Overcooked! 2: controls, the scoring system, recipe workflows, team roles for 1–4 chefs, solo tips, DLC content and how to fix common online and controller issues on PC.

Researched September 2026 — current as of the final Steam build (the October 2025 Unity security patch; the franchise celebrated its 10th anniversary in August 2026). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Quick Start

  • Serve orders in the order they appear. Tips multiply when you serve consecutive orders in sequence. Out-of-order serving still pays but breaks the tip streak.
  • Throw ingredients, not plates. Uncooked ingredients can be thrown to a teammate or straight into a pot/pan. Plates, pans and finished dishes can't be thrown — they have to be carried.
  • Assign roles. One player chops, one cooks and plates, one washes dishes. Chaos comes from everyone doing everything.
  • Wash dishes early. Dirty plates return after a short delay; a missing plate is the most common reason orders fail.
  • Keep a fire extinguisher nearby. Fires spread fast; put them out immediately.
  • Dash to cover gaps and catch timing windows. Dashing is faster but can knock ingredients or chefs off platforms.
  • Play solo with the chef-swap button. Solo players control two chefs and switch between them.
  • Replay early levels for stars. Stars unlock new levels on the overworld map.

Controls

Default controls (rebindable on PC):

Action | What it does

Move | Walk around the kitchen

Pick Up / Put Down | Grab and place items, ingredients and plates

Chop / Throw | Chop at a board; throw raw ingredients when holding them

Dash | Short burst of speed

Emote | Communicate with teammates

Swap Chef (solo) | Switch between your two chefs

Keyboard and gamepad controls are listed in Options → Controls. Keyboard players on the same PC can split the keyboard into two layouts for local co-op.

Scoring & Stars

  • Order value: Each order has a base value.
  • Tips: Serving orders in the order they appear increases your tip multiplier (up to x4). Serving out of order resets it.
  • Failed orders: Orders that expire subtract points.
  • Stars: Each level has 1–3 star thresholds. Stars unlock later levels and bonus content.
  • Score screen: The end screen breaks your score into delivered orders, tips and failed orders — check it to see what actually cost you the star.

Core Workflows

Sushi (World 1)

  • Chop fish (and cucumber where needed), cook rice, then assemble on seaweed.
  • Rule: Rice is the slowest step — keep it cooking constantly.

Burgers

  • Chop meat, cook it on the grill, chop lettuce/tomato, assemble with buns.
  • Rule: Keep meat cooking while chopping sides.

Pizzas

  • Build on dough (chopped tomato, cheese and other toppings as ordered), then bake in the oven.
  • Rule: Assemble the next pizza while the current one bakes.

Cakes & Desserts

  • Mix flour/egg/chocolate, bake, then plate.
  • Rule: Mixers and ovens are the bottleneck — don't leave them idle.

General tip: identify the slowest step in the recipe (cooking/baking/mixing) and keep it running constantly.

Team Roles

Players | Suggested roles

1 (solo) | Chef A preps and throws ingredients; Chef B cooks, plates and serves. Swap frequently.

2 | One prepper/chopper, one cook/plater. Share dishwashing.

3 | Prepper, cook, plater/dishwasher.

4 | Prepper, cook, plater, dishwasher/runner.

Key rule: The player nearest the pass (serving window) should plate and serve.

The Three-Star Routine (use on any level)

  • Watch the first 10 seconds. Before touching anything, find the ingredient crates, chopping boards, stoves/ovens, sink, plate return and the pass. Say out loud who owns which station.
  • Pre-stage the first order. The first ticket is already visible at the start; prep it while the kitchen is quiet.
  • Find the bottleneck station. Whatever takes longest (rice, ovens, mixers, fryers) must never sit idle. Assign one chef to babysit it.
  • Keep two clean plates at the pass. If plates run out, the whole kitchen stalls behind the sink.
  • Throw across gaps. In split kitchens, one chef throws raw ingredients to the other side — it's faster than walking round.
  • Protect the tip streak. If a later order is ready before an earlier one, it's often worth holding it for a few seconds rather than breaking the multiplier.
  • Anticipate the map event. Most levels change mid-round (tilting, splitting, moving). Finish or park risky actions before it happens.
  • Retry fast. If you're way behind the first star pace at the halfway mark, restart — the layout knowledge you gained is the real progress.

Local Co-op & Versus

  • Couch co-op: Mix gamepads and keyboard; the keyboard can host two players with split layouts. Steam Remote Play Together also works for inviting friends to a local session online.
  • Versus mode: Two teams share or mirror a kitchen and compete for score. Stealing time from the other team (by serving faster and grabbing shared ingredients) matters more than perfect tips.
  • Arcade mode: Randomly selected stages from themes you choose — great for practice (and for online matchmaking) without campaign pressure.
  • Mixed-skill groups: Give the newest player a single job (dishes or chopping) with a fixed spot. The experienced player plates and serves.

Level Mechanics

  • Moving kitchens: Platforms and counters shift; plan routes before the move.
  • Teleporters: Items and chefs can teleport between areas.
  • Throwing: Throw ingredients across gaps to save time.
  • Fire & hazards: Put out fires quickly; avoid falling off platforms.
  • Moving walkways, slippery surfaces, splitting kitchens and other dynamic hazards appear in later worlds and DLC.

Campaign & Overworld

  • The story campaign spans six worlds on the Onion Kingdom overworld map, with a final showdown against the Unbread. You travel it by land, sea and air, and kitchens range from sushi restaurants and a magic school to mines and alien planets.
  • Some levels move you between kitchens mid-round — for example, a level can start with salads in a hot-air balloon and end crash-landed in a sushi kitchen. Don't leave food cooking right before a transition.
  • Hidden Kevin levels are unlocked by finding secrets on the overworld map.
  • Stars unlock later levels, so replay earlier levels to get 3 stars.
  • Arcade and Versus modes are available for quick sessions and competitive play.

DLC & Free Updates

DLC/Update | What it adds

Surf 'n' Turf | Beach-themed levels and new recipes

Campfire Cook Off | Camping-themed levels and mechanics

Night of the Hangry Horde | Horde mode: feed the hungry horde attacking your kitchen before it breaks in

Carnival of Chaos | Carnival-themed levels and recipes

Too Many Cooks Pack | Extra chefs (cosmetic)

Season Pass | Bundles paid DLC at a discount — check the store page for exactly what it includes

Seasonal free updates | Holiday-themed levels, recipes and chefs

What to buy first: Surf 'n' Turf and Campfire Cook Off are the most "more of the same, but new tricks" packs; Night of the Hangry Horde is the most different (a horde-defence twist) and is best with a steady co-op group. The Too Many Cooks Pack is purely cosmetic. All of them go on sale often — the Steam franchise sale in September 2023 had Overcooked! 2 at 75% off.

The AYCE upgrade scheme

Team17 has twice offered Overcooked! 2 owners on Steam a 75% discount on Overcooked! All You Can Eat (December 2022, and again March 16–23, 2023). It was a limited-time offer; if you're thinking of upgrading, watch the Steam news page for it to return rather than paying full price.

Online Play & Crossplay

  • Online co-op supports up to 4 players.
  • Steam has default and crossplay branches (mentioned in Team17's 2023 patch notes). Everyone in the same lobby must be on the same branch.
  • If you can't connect, verify files and make sure everyone is on the same version/branch.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Everyone chopping at once. Leads to idle stoves and missing plates.
  • Ignoring dirty plates. Plates stack up; keep a dishwasher.
  • Serving out of order. Kills tip multipliers.
  • Throwing too early. Missing a throw wastes time.
  • Panic-dashing. It can knock ingredients or chefs off platforms.
  • Not planning for level shifts. Moving kitchens can strand players.

Advanced Tips

  • Pre-prep ingredients while waiting for orders.
  • Use throwing constantly. It's the biggest time saver in the game.
  • Stack plates and trays near the pass.
  • Communicate with emotes online.
  • Keep one player as "floater" to cover whatever is lagging.
  • For solo play: leave one chef at the cooking station and use the other to prep.

Troubleshooting (PC)

  • Controller not detected: Toggle Steam Input for the game. Team17 has released controller compatibility updates (and rolled back one OSX controller update in 2023).
  • Online connection issues: Make sure everyone is on the same branch and game version.
  • Security update: An October 2025 update fixed a Unity security vulnerability — update your game.

Overcooked! 2 vs Overcooked! All You Can Eat

All You Can Eat includes remastered (4K) Overcooked! 1 and 2 campaigns with their DLC, cross-platform multiplayer, Assist Mode accessibility settings, 22 AYCE-exclusive levels and 60+ chefs, plus free updates that only AYCE received (such as the World Food Festival). Overcooked! 2 is still a great standalone game and cheaper, but AYCE is the definitive edition. Note that saves don't carry across — AYCE is a separate game.

Solo Play, Done Properly

Solo is a different game: you control two chefs but only one moves at a time, so the skill is parking a chef somewhere useful before swapping.

  • Park chefs next to timed stations. Leave one chef beside the stove, oven or sink so that when you swap back, the next action is one button press away.
  • Chop with one, cook with the other. Chopping requires you to stay on the board, so do it on the chef you're currently controlling while the other waits by the cooker.
  • Throw between your own chefs. In split kitchens, throw ingredients from one chef toward the other, then swap and catch/plate.
  • Wash dishes in bursts. Queue plates at the sink and wash several in one go instead of one at a time between orders.
  • Accept lower tips. Solo three-star thresholds are reachable, but you'll often have to serve one order out of sequence to avoid a fail — a lost multiplier costs less than an expired order.
