This guide covers the game modes, how inventory and death work, zombies and PvP survival, reputation, currencies and the Season Pass, and the weekend events that run nearly every week.

Researched September 2026 — current as of Update 11.5 (19 August 2026) and Season Pass 22: Dynasty (running until 11 January 2027). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Quick Start

  • Choose the right mode first. Arcade is PvP-focused with plentiful loot. Survival is the old-school, loot-scarce zombie survival mode in the style of the original Infestation / The War Z. Battle Royale is last-player-standing. Competitive is 5-player group ranked play. New players should start in Arcade to learn gunfights without losing hard-earned gear.
  • You need a New Z account linked to Steam. The game uses its own Fredaikis Anti-Cheat, a kernel-level anti-cheat. It has to be running for you to play.
  • What you carry into a server is at risk. Items in your character's backpack can be lost when you die, and the stash (Global Inventory) in the menu is safe. Only bring what you're willing to lose.
  • Noise and gunfire attract zombies. Use melee on single zombies and save ammo for players and Super Zombies.
  • Watch your reputation. Killing other players, especially non-hostile ones, changes your standing. Double Reputation weekends in Arcade PvP are the fastest way to grind it.
  • Group up. Clans and groups fight over territory in the open-world modes. A solo player is prey on busy servers.
  • Check the Steam news every Friday. Weekend events (sniper-only BR, PvP map rotations, zombie leaderboards, Skinbox hunts) usually start Friday and end Sunday or Monday at 14:00 CEST.
  • Pick the closest region. Servers run in Europe, North America, South America, and Hong Kong. Ping matters a lot in close-range fights.

Game Modes

Mode | What it is | Who it's for

Arcade (listed as "Open World" on the Steam store) | Open-world, PvP-oriented. Loot is common, and there's a PvP Servers section with smaller close-combat maps. You can do missions, take territories, and fight clans. | Players who want action fast

Survival | Scavenge, craft, and survive on large maps. Loot is scarce, and zombies and players are both threats. | Classic Infestation / War Z fans

Battle Royale | Drop in, loot, last one alive wins. Special rule events rotate, such as Sniper Only (snipers, melee, and handguns). | Short sessions

Competitive | Group or solo in teams of 5, with a ranking system | Tryhards and clans

Maps you'll hear about

  • Colorado (and Colorado V2): the large classic open-world map. Community guides mark car and Super Zombie spawns here.
  • Caliwood: a large map that recent patches (Update 11.5) keep fixing for climbing and physics exploits.
  • PvP Servers maps in Arcade: Mirror Fields (regular rotation), Clearview (brought in for events), and Central, which used to be called Hospital. Central has run as an event map with a raised clan/group limit of 10, double reputation, and instant reload.

Inventory, Stash, and Death

  • Global Inventory (GI) is your menu stash, shared across characters and safe from death.
  • Backpack: what your character carries on the server. Plan to lose it when you die in Survival.
  • GI Lockers show up as Season Pass rewards and extra storage items. Grab them if your stash is full.
  • Before you log in: pick a kit that fits your mode. Bring a light, cheap kit to Survival until you know the map. Bring your best guns to Arcade.
  • Log out safely. Don't disconnect in the open. Find cover first.

Your First Survival Session

Survival is where most new players quit, because loot is scarce and death costs you everything you carried. A calm first session looks like this:

  • Spawn with a near-empty backpack. Treat the first life as a scouting run, not a looting run.
  • Move along edges, not through the middle. Tree lines, hedges, and building walls hide you from both zombies and scoped players. Roads and open fields are where you get sniped.
  • Loot small buildings first. Houses and sheds on the outskirts get checked less often than the big named towns and military spots, so you're less likely to meet a camper.
  • Prioritize in this order: a melee weapon, healing items, a backpack upgrade, then a firearm with matching ammo. A gun with no ammo is dead weight.
  • Pick up food and water as you go. They're light, and in the classic Infestation-style loop you don't want to be forced out of cover to go looking for them mid-run.
  • Stop when you're ahead. Once you've found something worth keeping, find cover and log out safely so it goes back with your character, rather than pushing one more town.
  • Die, learn, repeat. Note where you were killed and by what. After a few runs you'll know which spots are hot and which routes are quiet.

Solo vs. Group Play

Solo | Group

Best mode | Survival on quiet servers, Battle Royale | Arcade territories, Competitive (teams of 5)

Strength | Quiet, hard to spot, no loot splitting | Crossfire, revenge on campers, can hold territory

Weakness | Loses almost every even fight against a group | Loud, attracts attention and zombies

Tip | Avoid named towns at peak hours | Assign roles: scout/sniper, point, loot carrier

Events like Central Chaos (clan/group limit raised to 10) are built for big groups. If you're solo, those are weekends to play Survival or Battle Royale instead.

Zombies and Threats

  • Regular zombies come in several types, and some are much tougher than others. They're drawn to noise and sight.
  • Super Zombies and Alien Super Zombies are powerful elites (the Arcade versions dropped Skinboxes during the August 2026 Skinbox Hunt event). Fight them as a group, and keep moving so they can't land their hits.
  • Players are the biggest threat. Busy loot spots attract campers and snipers. Scout with binoculars or a scoped weapon before crossing open ground.
  • Zombie kills give experience and in-game currency, and there's the occasional leaderboard event. The September 2026 Zombie Leaderboard event rewarded the top 3 zombie killers in Arcade and Survival with subscription time.

Combat Tips

  • First-person vs third-person: The game supports both. Third person lets you peek around corners, so expect enemies to see you before you see them. Use cover that blocks both your body and your camera angle.
  • Loadouts: An assault rifle or SMG for mid range, a sniper for open maps, and a melee weapon for zombies. Handguns are backups, and during Sniper Only events they're your close-range option.
  • Healing: Carry bandages and medical supplies, and heal behind cover. Don't heal while being shot.
  • Barricades: Deployable barricades like the Wooden Shield Barricade make instant cover. Update 11.5 reverted recent changes to them, and a GOSU Wooden Shield Barricade was given as a Satan Cup reward.
  • Vehicles spawn on the larger maps. They're loud and fast. Use them to cross open ground, not to fight.

Reputation

Your reputation reflects how you treat other players, and it affects how others see you. Reputation-focused events, like Double Reputation on the Clearview and Central PvP weekends, let you climb much faster. Detailed thresholds have changed over the years, so check the in-game reputation screen rather than old tables.

Currencies, Premium, and Season Pass

Item | What it is

GC | Premium currency. It also comes from events. The September 2026 Stream Invasion gave 3,500 GC for 15 hours of streaming.

In-game money | Earned by playing (zombie kills, missions, selling). Used at in-game stores.

Subscription / premium time | Paid perks. It also shows up as a leaderboard and event reward.

Skinboxes | Cosmetic weapon-skin boxes. A new Skinbox was released in September 2026.

Season Pass 22: Dynasty | Live since 19–21 August 2026 and ends 11 January 2027. Rewards include the Dynasty skin set, skinboxes, GI Lockers, and gear.

F2P advice: Put your time into Season Pass progress and weekend events. They're the best free sources of skinboxes, storage, and currency. Don't spend GC on items you'll lose on death.

Trading

The game has trading lounges where players trade loot. Before trading:

  • Only trade with people you can verify, like clan mates or known traders.
  • Use the game's official trading tools. Anything outside them, like "you go first" deals or third-party sites, is a scam risk.
  • Check current prices in community channels before accepting an offer.

Weekly Event Pattern (Recent Examples)

Dates (2026) | Event

21–24 August | Central Chaos Weekend: Central PvP map, clan limit 10, double reputation, instant reload

28–31 August | Skinbox Hunt: Super and Alien Super Zombies in Arcade drop Skinboxes (not GC Skinboxes)

3–7 September | Stream Invasion: stream 15 hours in the Twitch category for 3,500 GC

11–14 September | Zombie Leaderboard: top 3 zombie killers in Arcade and Survival get rewards (ended 14 September 18:00 CEST)

18–21 September | Sniper Only in Battle Royale

25–28 September | Clearview PvP Weekend: Clearview replaces Mirror Fields, double reputation (ends 28 September 14:00 CEST)

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Taking your best gear into Survival on day one. Learn the map with a cheap kit.
  • Firing at every zombie. It brings more zombies and tells players where you are.
  • Looting high-traffic spots alone. That's where the campers are.
  • Ignoring event end times. Most end at 14:00 CEST on Sunday or Monday, but not all (the September Zombie Leaderboard closed at 18:00 CEST). Read each announcement.
  • Trading outside official tools. It's a scam risk.
  • Logging out in the open. Find cover first.

Advanced Tips

  • Learn one map deeply. Knowing loot routes, car spawns, and Super Zombie spawns on Colorado gives you a real edge.
  • Use events to grind. Double Reputation weekends and zombie leaderboards are the best returns on your time.
  • Clan up for Arcade territory fights. Coordinated groups win territories and control good loot.
  • Pre-plan escape routes from every loot building.
  • Report bugs through official support. The devs credit community reports in patch notes, and exploit fixes (like the Caliwood climbing spots) come from them.
