Everything you need to host good lobbies, score well in every mode, unlock characters now that the shop is gone, and use the new social and Artbook features in Draw & Guess.

Researched September 2026 — current as of the August 13, 2026 update (post "Progression, Social, and Artbooks" era, Ink removed). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Quick Start

  • Pick the mode for your group size. Stage is the classic "one draws, everyone guesses" mode (2-16 players). Whisper is the telephone-style chain (4-16). Robot lets you play alone or in a group against the AI guesser GU-355 (1-16). Battle Royale is the big public mode (10-63 players). Lounge is a no-pressure hangout canvas (1-16).
  • Speed is points in Stage. The faster a word is guessed, the more points everyone involved earns. Draw the single most recognisable feature first, not the background.
  • Whisper is not about winning. The fun is the replay at the end, where everyone votes on whether the chain kept the original prompt. Draw clearly, guess honestly, and let the chaos happen on its own.
  • Characters are now earned, not bought. Since the May 11, 2026 update, cosmetic microtransactions are gone. Every character is unlocked through challenges, some of them secret. Check a character's close-up view to see its unlock condition and unlock track.
  • Level up characters you play. Each character has an unlock track that rewards Artbooks, extra Artbook pages, skins, and a character-themed badge.
  • Use modifiers to refresh stale lobbies. Pixel Art, Invisible Lines, and Gravity change how drawing works; the timer can be shortened for speed rounds or lengthened for drawing marathons.
  • Custom wordlists make or break a lobby. Build one around your friend group's shared interests or subscribe to community lists through the built-in wordlist browser.
  • Holiday events still give free skins. Event quests (for example, the Summer Party skins that returned in August 2026 and the Lunar New Year skins earlier in the year) are free to earn during the event window.

What Changed in 2026 (Read This If You Are Returning)

Draw & Guess has had a big year. Here is the timeline from the official announcements:

Date | Change

Feb 17, 2026 | 2026 Roadmap posted; community vote on removing Ink (the premium currency added in the 2024 revamp)

Mar 2, 2026 | Lunar New Year extended; new unlockable LNY skin for Marina; undo/redo/clear locked once the drawer's timer runs out

Mar 24, 2026 | Vote result: 79% chose to remove Ink. Price for new buyers announced to rise to 4.99 USD / 4.99 GBP / 25 RMB with the next update

May 11, 2026 | "Progression, Social, and Artbooks" update: shop removed, characters unlocked by challenges, unlock tracks, profiles, Artbooks, Gallery, friends and DMs

Jun 10, 2026 | Artbook Viewer loads faster and gains keyboard navigation

Jul 15, 2026 | Fix for Metissa's unlock condition only tracking on the match host

Aug 5, 2026 | Summer Party event returns; lobby Emote system; new Creator program content including a new Azrael skin and Creator badges; badges equippable in profile and lobby; dev trust level replaced by an Acureus Team badge

Aug 13, 2026 | Gallery shelf scrolling fix, better "no lobbies found" guidance, fix for Steam achievements not granting when you already owned the character

If you had Ink: players who had acquired 350+ Ink received the exclusive Ink Master Wanderer skin, with more colour variants (and a Legacy Ink Badge) at higher totals. The old shop stayed temporarily open for three months after May 11 for players holding 350+ Ink; Ink can no longer be purchased. The shop has been replaced by a new Collection page. Exact tiers from the official post: 350-850 Ink = Ink Master Wanderer (Bronze); 851-1500 = Bronze + Silver variants and the Legacy Ink Badge; 1500+ = Bronze, Silver, and Blue variants plus the badge.

Game Modes in Depth

Stage (2-16 players)

The classic mode. One player draws a word, the rest type guesses. Faster correct guesses earn more points.

Drawing tips for Stage:

  • Silhouette first. A giraffe is a long neck and spots. Draw those in the first three seconds, then add detail only if nobody gets it.
  • Use context objects. For "firefighter", a hose and flames reads faster than a person in a hat.
  • Split compound words. Draw each half separately with a plus sign between them ("sun" + "flower").
  • Use arrows and circles. Circling the important part of a drawing is legal and effective.
  • Do not write letters or numbers that spell the word. Most groups treat it as cheating, and it ruins the game.

Guessing tips for Stage:

  • Guess early and often. Speed is what scores, and your guesses in chat show the drawer what you are thinking so they can adjust.
  • Think in categories. If it looks like an animal on a farm, cycle through the obvious farm animals quickly.
  • Watch the word length hint if your lobby shows one, and match your guesses to it.
  • Plural and spelling matter. If "cat" is not accepted, try "cats" or the more specific term.

Whisper (4-16 players)

A telephone chain. Players either pick a prompt from the options or type their own, pass it on, and then alternate between drawing the previous guess and guessing the previous drawing. At the end, everyone watches the replay and votes on whether the chain kept the original prompt.

  • Typed prompts are the best part. A specific, slightly absurd prompt ("a cat running a lemonade stand") creates better chains than a single noun.
  • When drawing, draw what the text says, not what you think the original prompt was. The drift is the joke.
  • When guessing, be literal. Describe what you actually see in the drawing.
  • Longer timers help Whisper because you have more to draw per step than in Stage.

Robot (1-16 players)

A drawing-only mode where the AI friend GU-355 guesses your prompt. The developers note this is not generative AI. The closer GU-355's guess matches your word, the more points you get.

  • Draw the most standard version of the object. Robot rewards textbook drawings, not creative ones. A cup is a cup shape with a handle, seen from the side.
  • Clean, bold lines beat shading. Keep the object centred and large on the canvas.
  • Avoid extra scenery. Background clutter can pull the guess toward the wrong object.
  • Robot is the best solo practice mode for learning which simple shapes read clearly.

Battle Royale (10-63 players)

The large-lobby version of Robot. A giant virus-ridden robot ejects players from spaceships while everyone tries to clear the virus. Survive to the end for a chance to unlock something special.

  • The Robot tips apply here, with extra time pressure. Iconic silhouettes, bold strokes, no backgrounds.
  • Do not overdraw. Adding more lines after the object is clear can confuse the guesser.
  • Play it repeatedly. Some unlocks and rewards are tied to how far you make it, so consistency matters more than one lucky run.

Lounge (1-16 players)

No rounds, no scoring. Just a lobby where you hang out and draw together. Good for:

  • Warming up before a Stage session
  • Collaborative pictures with friends
  • Showing new players the tools without the pressure of a timer
  • Drawing pieces you plan to put into an Artbook

Settings and Modifiers

Hosts can change how drawing works and how long rounds last:

Setting | What it does | When to use it

Pixel Art | Drawing snaps to a coarse pixel grid | Retro nights; makes detail hard, so silhouettes matter even more

Invisible Lines | You cannot see what you are drawing as you draw it | Chaotic party rounds; great in Whisper

Gravity | Your strokes are affected by gravity | Pure comedy; expect nothing to be recognisable

Timer | Short speed rounds or long drawing marathons | Short for Stage with experienced groups, long for Whisper or art-focused lobbies

Custom wordlists | Replace or add to the default prompts | Inside jokes, themed nights, language practice

Host tips:

  • Start a new group on default settings, then add one modifier at a time.
  • For mixed skill groups, a longer timer levels the playing field.
  • Themed wordlists (a single game, show, or topic) are the most reliable way to keep a regular group engaged.
  • The Aug 13 update fixed user word input when Twitch is connected, so streamers can again let chat submit words.

Wordlists

You can create and share your own wordlists, and the built-in wordlist browser lets you find and subscribe to community lists.

Writing a good wordlist:

  • Concrete nouns and simple actions are the most drawable ("umbrella", "juggling").
  • Avoid abstract words ("justice", "nostalgia") unless you want a hard mode.
  • Mix difficulty. Roughly a majority easy words keeps rounds flowing; a few harder ones reward good drawers.
  • Keep spelling unambiguous. Avoid words with common alternative spellings unless your group agrees on one.
  • Theme lists by audience. A list of in-jokes for friends plays very differently from a list for public lobbies.

Characters, Unlock Tracks, and Badges

Since May 11, 2026, all characters are unlocked by completing in-game challenges. Some conditions are shown; others are hidden and meant to be discovered by the community.

How to see what to do: open a character's close-up view. It shows the unlock condition (if it is not secret) and the character's unlock track, and each character now has its own splash art.

Unlock tracks: play with a character to level it up. Rewards along the track include:

  • Artbooks and additional Artbook pages
  • Character skins
  • A character-themed badge

Badges can be equipped directly on your profile and in the lobby (added August 5, 2026). Special badges include Creator badges from the Creator program and the Acureus Team badge, which identifies official developers.

Characters and skins confirmed in official posts include Theo (with the Night Lynx skin), Tomoko (the Snake Spirit Tomoko skin is permanently unobtainable, per the 2026 roadmap), Marina (LNY skin), Metissa, Azrael (Creator program skin), Scarlet, AL4N, Zoe, and the Wanderer (Ink Master skin for former Ink owners). Exact unlock conditions vary and some are hidden, so check the in-game close-up rather than trusting old lists.

Troubleshooting unlocks:

  • Before July 15, 2026, Metissa's unlock condition only tracked on the match host. That is fixed, but if a condition still does not trigger, try the challenge in a lobby you host.
  • The Aug 13 update fixed Steam achievements not being granted if you already owned the character. Launch the game after updating to let achievements sync.
  • Profile: add a bio, a favourite artwork, and your badges.
  • Artbooks: mini portfolios you publish publicly, with up to 9 images per page. Extra pages come from character unlock tracks.
  • Gallery: a global browsing space for published Artbooks, with filtering. The developers have said it is set up to support official and player-run art competitions.
  • Publishing rules: the Aug 5 update added a section on user-generated content to the publish rules for profile and Artbook images. Read them before publishing; do not upload art you did not make.

Artbook tips:

  • Curate. Nine strong images beat nine random ones.
  • Group pages by theme (Robot practice, Whisper disasters, friend portraits).
  • Use Lounge to make polished pieces without a timer.

Social Features

The May 2026 update added:

  • A friends system with direct messages
  • Custom statuses
  • A recent player list (handy for re-adding people from a good public lobby)
  • A block list

In August 2026, a lobby Emote system was added, letting your character express emotions while hanging out between rounds.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Drawing backgrounds first. In Stage and Robot, every second spent on grass and sky is lost points.
  • Writing the word or its letters. It ends the round early and annoys the lobby.
  • Using Invisible Lines or Gravity with brand-new players. Let people learn the normal tools first.
  • Overly hard wordlists in public lobbies. People leave when nothing is guessable.
  • Ignoring the unlock track. You earn progress by playing, so pick a character whose track rewards you want.
  • Giving up on a hidden unlock after one try. Some conditions are deliberately secret; community Discord discussion is the best way to crowdsource them.
  • Assuming Ink still exists. It cannot be bought any more; the old shop is gone and replaced by the Collection page.

Advanced Tips

  • Build a personal symbol vocabulary. Arrows for motion, a crossed-out circle for "not", a speech bubble for sounds. Consistent symbols speed up every Stage round with regular friends.
  • Draw the category first, then specialise. For "golden retriever", draw a clear dog, wait for "dog", then add details that push toward the breed.
  • In Whisper, use the replay vote strategically. If a chain drifted in a genuinely funny way, the vote is where the group decides whether it "kept" the prompt, so argue your case.
  • For Robot and Battle Royale, practise canonical views. Side view for vehicles and animals, front view for faces and buildings, top view for things like pizza.
  • Speed-round training: set a very short timer in a private Stage lobby with a friend and drill the default wordlist. Your first-stroke choices will improve quickly.
  • Streamers: connect Twitch so chat can submit words, and use a custom wordlist as a fallback.
  • Reconnects: multiple 2026 patches improved reconnection. If you drop, rejoin from the main menu quickly rather than restarting the game.

FAQ

Is Draw & Guess free to play? No. It is a paid game on Steam. In March 2026 the developers announced the price for new buyers would rise to 4.99 USD / 4.99 GBP / 25 RMB with the next update; existing owners are unaffected. Check the store for the current regional price.

Can I still buy characters or Ink? No. Following the community vote, cosmetic microtransactions were removed on May 11, 2026. All characters are unlocked by in-game challenges and unlock tracks, and seasonal skins are earned free during events.

How many players can play? Stage, Whisper, Robot, and Lounge support up to 16 players. Battle Royale supports large public lobbies of 10-63 players. Robot and Lounge can be played solo.

How do I unlock a specific character? Open that character's close-up view in the Collection page to see its condition and unlock track. Some conditions are hidden on purpose.

My achievement did not unlock even though I own the character. Why? This was a known bug fixed on August 13, 2026. Update the game and launch it once.

Does the Robot mode use generative AI? The developers state that GU-355 is not generative AI; it matches your drawing against the prompt and scores the match.

What is coming next? The 2026 roadmap promises a brand-new game mode, free for all players, later in 2026. It had not been released as of the August 13 update.
