Text version of this guide
This guide covers BattleBlock Theater's story-mode structure, gems and yarn, weapons and blocks, co-op technique, Insane mode, the eight Arena games, achievements, and what changed in the 2026 Quality of Life Remaster.
Researched September 2026 — current as of Hotfix 2.1.1 (11 June 2026), after the Quality of Life Remaster (1 April 2026) and Patch 2.1 "Quality of DEATH" (20 May 2026). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.
What's New: The 2026 Remaster in Brief
The Behemoth rebuilt the game from scratch as a free update for all existing owners on 1 April 2026. The main points:
- Visuals and audio: Art without a fixed resolution (sharp at high resolutions), redesigned menus with mouse scrolling, higher audio bitrate, and better level previews.
- Online: Join codes work in online sessions, and Steam Rich Presence was added. Patch 2.1 fixed a long list of desyncs.
- Controllers: Wider support, including Xbox One and Series, PS4 and PS5, and Switch Pro controllers.
- Custom Heads can now use decal images with elements that aren't colorized.
- Story changes: Hidden gems were remixed so Solo and Co-op differ more, levels were rebalanced, co-op sections were redesigned so both players are needed, secret level locations were reworked, and A++ time thresholds were recalibrated per difficulty.
- Leaderboards were reset, except the Global Ranking. You have to open the game and post a score for your old scores to repopulate.
- Patch 2.1 "Quality of DEATH" brought back Legacy behavior (grenade and teleporter interaction, judo throws, Frog Bomb handling, and more) and deliberately restored speedrun tech: Boulder tech, Tar-block slide canceling, crouching to survive Acid Bubbles, air-spike jump cancels, mashing up Treadmills, double jumps after Lava-block air slam bounces, and mid-air Forceball wall jumps.
- Hotfix 2.1.1 brought back dropping tech, and it now works online as well as offline.
- Smaller fixes: Hotfix 1 (2 April 2026) fixed Custom Head decals ignoring player color, Steam Deck/Mac/Linux players getting stuck leaving a Gift Shop, and a co-op chapter-door countdown that could persist. Hotfix 2 (8 April 2026) fixed a crash when moving in and out of the Help & Options menus.
- Just for fun: The credits now show a "Cats Harmed" count for your save.
Quick Start
- Story mode is "co-optional". Play solo or with a second player (couch or online). Co-op has its own versions of levels, and since the remaster some sections really need both players.
- Gems are the main currency. Collect them in levels to open the exit and to spend in the Gift Shop freeing prisoners, which unlocks new character heads.
- Yarn buys weapons. Collect yarn and trade it with the cat guards at the Gift Shop for new weapons.
- Every chapter ends in a timed Finale. Beating it unlocks that chapter's Encore bonus levels.
- Speed and gems decide your grade. Levels are graded from C up to A++, and top grades pay bonus gems.
- Equip two weapons and swap between them. Pick tools that solve problems, not just kill things.
- Insane mode means no checkpoints. Save it until you know the levels.
- Look for secrets. Golden Hats and hidden areas are scattered around. "Secret Hat Hunter" asks for 10 Golden Hats.
Story Mode Structure
- Chapters: The theater's story is split into chapters, each with a run of levels and a Finale. "Hats Off" needs a letter grade in all eight finales.
- Levels: Each has gems, sometimes yarn, and secrets. Collect enough gems and the exit opens. Collect more to bank currency.
- Finales: Timed levels where you grab as many gems as possible before the timer runs out.
- Encores: Harder bonus levels that unlock after a chapter's finale. "Take A Bow" is your first and "Crowd Pleaser" is all of them.
- Difficulties: Normal (checkpoints) and Insane (no checkpoints, "one life to live"). Both have Solo and Co-op versions, and achievements exist for each.
- Narration: The narrator is a major part of the game's humor, and the story explains Hatty Hattington's cursed hat and the cats' theater.
Grades
Grade | What it takes
C to A | Finish with increasing speed and collection
A++ | Fast clear with full collection. Thresholds were rebalanced per difficulty in the 2026 remaster
"Virtuoso" asks for A++ in 10 levels. Go for it on short early levels you've already learned.
Gift Shop: Prisoners, Heads, and Weapons
Currency | Spend on | Why
Gems | Freeing prisoners (new heads) | "Jail Breaker" at 50 freed, "Freedom Hero" at all of them, "Social Butterfly" for all of one head shape
Yarn | Weapons from the cat guards | "Black Marketeer" (first), "Armed and Dangerous" (all weapons)
You can also trade with other players ("First Time Trader"), and the remaster improved gem and yarn stacking in the Steam inventory. There's a large pool of prisoners to rescue (the store page advertises 300), so expect to grind gems if you want them all.
Weapons
You hold two weapons and swap between them. Weapons you'll meet include the following (Grenades, Frog Bombs, Acid Bubbles, and Forceball are named directly in the 2026 patch notes; check the Gift Shop for the full current list):
Weapon | Use
Grenades | Area damage. Also interact with Teleporters
Frog Bombs | A bouncing explosive you can jump on and throw
Dart Gun | Poison darts
Acid Bubbles | Trap or kill enemies. Crouching protects you from your own
Paper Airplane | A ranged projectile
Forceball | Knockback, and advanced wall-jump tech
Vacuum | Pulls enemies and objects
The store blurb also mentions options to explode, freeze, poison, or "digest a baby". Collect everything for "Weapons Master" (use each weapon) and "Armed and Dangerous" (own them all).
Solo tip: Pick movement and utility (Forceball, for example) along with one damage option. Co-op tip: Split roles so one player has crowd control and the other has utility.
Blocks and Hazards
Levels are built from interactive blocks. These are the ones that matter most:
Block / hazard | Behavior
Tar | Sticky. Changes your jumps and has slide tech
Ice | Slippery. Fan blocks push harder on ice since the remaster
Fan | Pushes you along its direction
Lava | Deadly on contact, but air-slam bounces enable tech
Boulder | Rolling hazard. Since the remaster, touching the bottom no longer kills you
Lift | Moving platform. No longer crushes crouching players
Teleporter | Links areas. Blocked by Trigger Blocks until they're activated
Treadmill / conveyor | Moves you and objects
Secret Block | Hides secrets
Water | Drowning hazard (and co-op trolling material)
Enemies include Cat Guards (which path better around water since the remaster) and Raccoon Monsters.
Movement and Melee
- Jump, double jump, and wall interactions are the core. Most secrets need clean wall jumps.
- Melee attacks: punches, air slams, slide tackles, judo throws (partner-throwing in co-op), and air spikes. "Melee Master" asks you to use every melee move.
- Co-op throws: Throw your partner to reach high ledges. Many co-op gems rely on this.
- Co-op stacking and holding: Stand on each other and carry each other.
Arena Mode
Up to four players in 2v2 matches across eight modes:
Mode | Summary
Soul Snatcher | Collect and bank souls from defeated opponents
Muckle | Straight-up brawl scoring
Challenge | Race through a level faster than the other team (entity logic now runs locally for fairness)
King of the Hill | Hold the zone
Color the World | Paint blocks your color. Basic blocks can be colored since the remaster
Grab the Gold | Collect and hold gold
Ball Game | Get the ball into the goal. Now uses torque physics
Capture the Horse | Steal and hold the horse
"All Around Joe" needs a win in every mode and "The Professional" needs 100 wins. Arena AI was improved in the remaster, so bots are a way to practice.
Level Editor and Featured Playlists
- Build levels with more than 20 block types. Editor input responsiveness improved in the remaster.
- Share and play community levels. "Theater Manager" means hosting a game of user-created levels, and "Theater Critic" means finishing 10 levels in a Featured Story playlist.
Achievement Roadmap
- First playthrough (Normal, solo or co-op): Cast Member, Nail File Cake, Black Marketeer, Seasoned Performer (first four finales), Take A Bow, Deadly Performer (100 kills).
- Cleanup on Normal: Solo Star and Coop Star (a letter grade in every non-Encore level in each mode), Hats Off, Crowd Pleaser, Secret Hat Hunter, Virtuoso.
- Gift Shop grind: Jail Breaker, Social Butterfly, Freedom Hero, Armed and Dangerous, Weapons Master, First Time Trader.
- Arena and editor: All Around Joe, The Professional, Theater Manager, Theater Critic.
- Insane: Insane Solo Star and Insane Coop Star. Learn every level first.
- Social: Chicken Toucher means playing online with The Behemoth or someone who already has the achievement. It spreads, so play with people who have it.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Rushing Insane before learning the levels. No checkpoints means one mistake costs the whole level.
- Spending yarn randomly. Buy weapons that fix problems you're actually having.
- Ignoring co-op-exclusive routes. Since 2026, co-op levels are built around teamwork. Communicate throws and holds.
- Expecting old leaderboard scores to persist on their own. Open the game and post a score for them to come back.
- Assuming old tech still works (or doesn't). Patch 2.1 and Hotfix 2.1.1 brought several tricks back on purpose. Check what's current if something feels different.
Advanced Tips
- Speedrun tech is back (Patch 2.1 and Hotfix 2.1.1): Boulder tech, tar-slide canceling, air-spike jump cancels, treadmill mashing, lava air-slam double jumps, mid-air Forceball wall jumps, and dropping.
- Grade farming: Replay short early levels you've mastered for A++ bonus gems.
- Finale routing: Plan a loop through gem clusters before the timer starts.
- Co-op trolling is a feature: Drowning and throwing your friend are part of the fun. Agree on house rules for grade runs.
- Custom heads: Use the new decal support to give your performer a personal look.
