A practical primer for Arma 3, the open-world military sandbox. It covers controls, infantry fundamentals, vehicles, the Eden editor and Zeus, the mods and modes people actually play, and how to join a unit.

Researched September 2026, current as of Game Update 2.22 (SPOTREP #00120) and its follow-up hotfix (SPOTREP #00121). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Arma 3 is still getting official updates more than a decade after launch. Game Update 2.22 (August 11, 2026) brought MH-80 Ghost Hawks, new languages, and platform support; it also synced the experimental Mac port to the same version as Windows. Creator DLCs like Western Sahara and Expeditionary Forces keep getting their own patches too. Bohemia's newer game on the Enfusion engine is Arma Reforger, but Arma 3 still has the larger mod and mission library.

Quick Start

  • Play the Field Manual and the Bootcamp campaign first. Bootcamp teaches the basic controls in context. The Field Manual (from the main menu) is your reference.
  • Check your keybinds. Arma uses a lot of keys, and the defaults are dense. Rebind anything awkward before your first multiplayer session.
  • Get prone, stay slow. One or two rifle hits can drop you. Move from cover to cover, and don't sprint across open ground.
  • Zero your scope (Page Up/Page Down) for long-range shots. The current zeroing shows in the top-right weapon info.
  • Use the map (M) constantly. Most combat happens at 200–800 m, and navigation is half the game.
  • The action menu is the scroll wheel. Opening doors, getting into vehicles, healing, and picking up items all happen through it. Middle-click or your Action key confirms.
  • Manage stamina and weight. Heavy gear drains stamina fast. Check your load in the inventory (I).
  • Join a milsim unit or a well-run public server for the best experience. Pub gameplay without communication falls apart quickly.
  • Learn the Eden Editor. Building your own training scenario is the fastest way to practice anything.

Core Controls (Default)

These are common defaults. Check Options, then Controls, because presets can differ.

Action | Key

Move | W A S D

Sprint (hold) | Shift

Crouch / Prone | X / Z

Adjust stance (fine) | Ctrl + W/A/S/D

Lean left / right | Q / E

Step over / vault | V

Free look | Alt (hold)

Optics / hold breath | Right mouse (tap/hold)

Zeroing up / down | Page Up / Page Down

Fire mode | F

Reload | R

Throw grenade | G

Nightvision | N

Flashlight / laser | L

Map | M

Inventory | I

Action menu | Scroll wheel, confirm with middle mouse

Voice channel cycle | . and , (period/comma)

Push-to-talk | Caps Lock

Tip: Arma uses weapon resting (on walls or windowsills) and bipods. Deploying a bipod or resting your weapon greatly reduces sway.

Infantry Fundamentals

Movement and cover

  • Bounding: one fireteam covers while another moves, then they swap. Even in pubs, moving with a buddy keeps both of you alive longer.
  • Use terrain. Reverse slopes, ditches, and walls stop rounds far better than bushes. Bushes hide you but don't stop bullets.
  • Don't skyline yourself on ridges. Crest them prone or offset.

Shooting

  • Ballistics matter. Bullet drop and travel time increase with range. Set zero to the target's range and lead moving targets.
  • Sway: it goes up with fatigue, injury, and standing. Crouch or go prone, rest your weapon, and hold breath for precise shots.
  • Suppression: incoming fire increases your sway. Return fire to suppress enemies in turn.

Medical (vanilla)

  • First Aid Kits heal you up to a limit in the field. Medikits and a medic (Medic role) can heal fully.
  • Getting shot in the legs or arms affects movement and aim. Treat it quickly.
  • Most milsim groups run ACE3 medical, which is much more detailed (bleeding, tourniquets, blood, pain). See the mods section.

Communication

  • Voice channels: Global, Side, Command, Group, Vehicle, Direct. Use Direct for nearby chatter and Group for your squad.
  • Most organized groups use radio mods (TFAR or ACRE2) for realistic radio behavior.

Vehicles

Vehicle type | Notes

Cars and trucks | Fast transport. Easy to kill with launchers and MG fire

APCs/IFVs | Troop transport plus firepower. Crew roles: driver, gunner, commander

Tanks (Tanks DLC improved them) | Deadly, but vulnerable to AT and to being isolated. Keep infantry nearby

Helicopters | Transport and CAS. Learn the flight model in the editor first (advanced flight model is optional)

Jets (Jets DLC) | Carriers, sensors, and targeting overhauls. Radar and data link matter

Crew tips:

  • In armor, the commander spots and the gunner shoots. Coordinate on Vehicle channel.
  • Use the sensor panels (added in the Tanks/Jets updates) for radar and IR targets.
  • Crashing a helicopter full of players is the fastest way to be banned from a server. Practice solo first.

Official Content and DLC

Main expansions and platform DLC:

DLC | Adds

Apex | Tanoa map, campaign, new weapons and vehicles

Contact | Livonia map, an alien-contact campaign, the "Spectrum Device"

Tanks | Heavy armor and a tank mini-campaign

Jets | Jets, a carrier, sensor overhaul

Marksmen | Marksman rifles, deployable bipods, weapon resting

Helicopters | Heavy transports, sling loading, advanced flight model

Laws of War | Humanitarian and demining content, plus a story campaign about the aftermath of war

Karts | Go-karts (a joke DLC that's actually fun)

Art of War | Art gallery charity content

Creator DLC (third-party content published by Bohemia; release dates from arma3.com):

Creator DLC | Developer | Released

Global Mobilization: Cold War Germany | Vertexmacht | April 2019

S.O.G. Prairie Fire (Vietnam) | Savage Game Design | May 2021

ČSLA Iron Curtain (Cold War Czechoslovakia) | ČSLA Studio | June 2021

Western Sahara | Rotators Collective | November 2021

Spearhead 1944 (WWII) | Heavy Ordnance Works | July 2023

Reaction Forces | Rotators Collective | March 2024

Expeditionary Forces | Tiny Gecko Studios | November 2024

Western Sahara (update 1.1.9) and Expeditionary Forces (update 1.2.2) both got patches in September 2026.

The base game's "The East Wind" campaign spans the islands of Stratis and Altis. It's a good way to learn the game before multiplayer. The base game also ships official multiplayer scenarios: Combat Patrol, Escape, and Warlords.

Multiplayer modes

  • King of the Hill (KOTH): a big PvP server mode with persistent XP and unlocks. The easiest way to find action fast.
  • Antistasi (and variants like Antistasi Plus / Community): co-op guerrilla campaign. Build up resistance on a map over many sessions.
  • Liberation: co-op campaign to liberate the map sector by sector, with logistics and building.
  • Exile / Altis Life-style servers: survival and role-play communities.
  • Zeus missions: a Game Master controls the enemy live. Many units run weekly Zeus ops.

Staple mods (Steam Workshop, managed with the Arma 3 Launcher)

Mod | What it does

CBA_A3 | A library that most other mods depend on

ACE3 | Medical, ballistics, interaction menu, logistics. The milsim standard

TFAR / ACRE2 | Realistic radio (with TeamSpeak for TFAR)

RHS (AFRF, USAF, GREF, SAF) | Realistic modern weapons and vehicles

CUP | Classic Arma 2 content and maps ported to Arma 3

Enhanced Movement | Climbing and extra movement

JSRS / Blastcore-style sound and effects | Better sound and visual effects

Load mods through the Arma 3 Launcher and use presets for each server or unit. Mismatched mods are the most common reason you can't join a server.

Eden Editor and Zeus

  • Eden Editor (main menu): place units, set waypoints, and hit Play. Great for practicing aiming, driving, flying, or AT drills.
  • Zeus: the live mission control. In Eden, place a Game Master module and assign it to yourself to spawn units and run scenarios on the fly.
  • Workshop scenarios: there are thousands of single-player and co-op scenarios for when you don't have a group.

Joining a Unit (Milsim)

  • Look for units on Reddit, Discord communities, and Arma unit-listing sites. Check their timezone, commitment level, and modpack.
  • Expect an orientation or basic training (radio procedure, ACE medical, formations).
  • Most units play weekly with a fixed modpack. Download it before your first op, since packs can run tens of gigabytes.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Running in the open. You'll get shot from 500 m by someone you never saw.
  • Not setting zero. Your shots at 400 m fall short if your scope is zeroed for 100 m.
  • Carrying too much. Fatigue ruins aim and stops you sprinting.
  • Flying with a full helicopter before practicing solo. Crashes kill everyone on board.
  • Joining modded servers without the right modpack. Check the server's required mods first.
  • Teamkilling by misidentification. Check your map markers and the tags your server uses before shooting.

Advanced Tips

  • Use the rangefinder or a laser designator to get exact range, then zero or adjust holdover.
  • Weight changes handling. Heavier rifles and LMGs sway more and take longer to steady. Match your weapon to your role and ranges.
  • Use the IR laser with night vision. It lets you aim without looking down the scope at night.
  • Plan routes on the map with markers before stepping off. Good units plan more than they shoot.
  • Try the Advanced Flight Model once you're comfortable. It adds torque, rotor physics, and autorotation.
  • Watch performance: Arma 3 is CPU-bound. View distance and object view distance matter more than most graphics settings. On busy servers, performance is limited by the server's FPS.

FAQ

Is Arma 3 still being updated in 2026? Yes. Game Update 2.22 (with a hotfix after it) is the latest official build as of this writing. Creator DLCs also get their own updates.

Should I buy Arma 3 or Arma Reforger? Arma 3 has the bigger mod, mission, and unit ecosystem. Reforger is newer (on the Enfusion engine) and runs on consoles. Many players own both.

Is there a cheap way to try all the DLC? Bohemia sells an Arma 3 Pass on Steam, a time-limited pass that Bohemia pitches as a way to "try out everything Arma 3 has to offer" before buying. Arma 3 and its DLC also go on deep discount during Bohemia's regular Steam sales.

Do I need DLC to play with friends? Not usually. Missing DLC content is often playable in a limited form on servers. Check server requirements for Creator DLC maps.

What's the best mode for beginners? The Bootcamp campaign, then a KOTH or Antistasi server, then a beginner-friendly milsim unit.

Why does Arma run so badly on my PC? It's heavily CPU-bound. Lower view and object distance, and check the server's FPS (low server FPS makes AI and vehicles stutter).

How do I install mods? Subscribe on the Steam Workshop, then enable them in the Arma 3 Launcher. Save presets for each server or unit.
