A guide to ARK: The Survival of the Fittest (TSOTF), the dinosaur-army battle royale spin-off of ARK: Survival Evolved. It covers the game's status in 2026, how a match plays out, Dino Points and taming, bosses, commander mode, and winning strategies.
Researched September 2026 — current as of the December 2022 "prototype" relaunch and its January 2023 balance patches (no newer official Steam announcements). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.
Status check (September 2026): TSOTF has not been officially shut down, but it's effectively dormant.
- History: It started in August 2015 as a total-conversion mode inside ARK: Survival Evolved and later got its own Steam app (the store lists 29 August 2017; the ARK wiki gives August 30, 2017 for the standalone). According to the ARK wiki, active development stopped in September 2016. Studio Wildcard announced the hiatus on Steam on December 17, 2016, which also ended the Survivor League tournaments. A reworked "prototype" version launched on December 23, 2022, followed by Xbox on February 16, 2023.
- Since then: The last official Steam announcement is the January 2023 recap of changes since launch. The Steam store page now says TSOTF "is now bundled with ARK: Survival Evolved. Purchase ARK: Survival Evolved to play." It still describes the game as "only a prototype."
- Population: Steam Charts shows only a handful of concurrent players, far below the early-2023 relaunch numbers (check the link in Sources for today's figures). Expect long waits or no match at off-peak hours. Organize games with friends or community Discords.
Quick Start
- Get it through ARK: Survival Evolved. TSOTF is now bundled with ASE on Steam. Own ASE and you have access.
- The goal: Be the last tribe standing out of up to 60 players. Modes include Free for All (solo), Duos, and 4-player tribes.
- No crafting and no inventory screen. You get eight inventory slots. Armor from supply drops equips itself and breaks when its durability hits zero.
- Dino Points (DP) are everything. Kill creatures and survivors to earn DP, then spend it on taming downed creatures, upgrading them, healing them, and summoning bosses.
- Taming means knocking a creature to 0 health, then spending DP to claim it. Only survivors can tame, not possessed dinos.
- The ring shrinks every three minutes. Standing outside the barrier damages both you and your dinos. Dinos die outside if their health runs out.
- You aren't out until your whole tribe is. A tribe only loses when all its survivors and tamed dinos are dead or knocked down. After you die, you can possess one of your dinos and keep fighting.
- Commander mode is the game's twist. You can switch to an RTS-style bird's-eye camera to command your army, while alive or after death.
Match Flow
Phase | What Happens | Priority
Sky lobby | Survivors gather in a TEK-themed lobby and group into tribes | Agree on a landing spot
Drop | A giant Quetzal flies across the island and auto-ejects everyone. You glide down on a temporary flyer (a Sinomacrops or Dimorphodon, per the ARK wiki) that disappears when you land. | Land away from the crowd unless you're confident
Early game | Loot, and knock out and tame small or medium creatures with DP | Build DP fast. Tame something mobile.
Mid game | Supply drops appear and the ring tightens every 3 minutes | Upgrade key dinos and grab high-tier drops
Boss window | Terminals let you summon a boss for 600 DP (each boss once per match) | Summon when you can defend the terminal
Endgame | Small final circle and full dino-army clashes | Commander mode, target priority, and holding high ground
Loadout and Supply Drops
Every survivor starts with one Blood Pack and a Parachute. You get more blood packs by killing other survivors. Parachutes were added as a lootable item in the January 2023 patch.
Supply drops are the only source of items (there's no crafting), and they're color-coded by tier. Rarer colors hold better weapons and armor:
Drop Color | Rarity
Green | Most common, basic weapons, armor and resources
Blue | Better quality
Purple | Stronger gear
Red | Rarest and best drops
Expect ARK weapons, armor and ammo from the drops; C4 and fire/flame weapons are confirmed in the game (both were rebalanced in the launch patches). With only eight slots, carry a ranged weapon, an explosive or panic tool, healing, and ammo. Don't hoard.
Dinos: Taming, Tiers, and Healing
- Taming: Knock a wild creature down to zero health, then spend DP to claim it. The cost depends on the creature.
- Stealing: Knocked-down tamed dinos can be claimed or reclaimed by other survivors. Protect your downed dinos, and steal enemy ones when you can.
- Tiers: Every dino starts at Tier 0 (level-1 stats) and can be upgraded to Tier 3 (about level 20) with DP. Upgrading a few strong creatures usually beats a big swarm of Tier 0s.
- Healing: You can spend DP to heal dinos over time, but it's pricey and has a cooldown. Avoid fights that need healing mid-battle.
- Balance history: The launch patches changed the Thylacoleo, Rhino, Triceratops, Carcharodontosaurus, and Dragon, as well as C4 and fire/flame weapons. The current meta hasn't moved since those January 2023 patches.
Army Composition
Role | What to Look For | Why
Frontline | Tanky herbivores and big carnivores (Triceratops, Rhino, Carcharodontosaurus-class) | Soak damage and hold the circle
Flankers | Fast predators (Thylacoleo-type ambushers, raptors) | Pick off survivors and archers
Utility | Small, cheap creatures | Scout, bait, and body-block. Even tiny creatures matter in the final circle.
Boss | Broodmother Lysrix, Dragon, or Megapithecus | Game-changing if you can defend the summon
Bosses
Three bosses can be summoned once per match at marked terminals (which spawn in the same spots as supply crates) for 600 points (the ARK wiki calls the currency "Dino Tokens" here and "Dino Points" elsewhere; it's the same pool): Broodmother Lysrix, the Dragon, and the Megapithecus.
- Timing: Summon when your tribe controls the terminal area and the ring won't force you out immediately.
- Denial: Watch the terminals. Contesting an enemy summon, or wiping them while they save up DP, can decide the match.
- Protect it: A boss is a huge DP investment. Don't send it alone into a crowd of enemy dinos.
Commander Mode and Possession
- Commander mode puts your camera into an RTS view. From there you can issue orders to your tribe's army and coordinate with teammates.
- Possession lets you directly control one of your tribe's tamed dinos without the risk of mounting it. It's the main way to stay in the fight after your survivor dies.
- Use both. Command the army from above while it's grouped, and possess your strongest dino for key fights, like knocking down an enemy boss or defending a terminal.
Winning Strategies
- Land smart. Contested drops end many runs early. A quiet landing with plenty of creatures to tame builds a stronger mid game.
- DP snowball. Knocking out and taming creatures is also how you earn DP. Chain easy wild kills early.
- Quality over quantity. A couple of Tier 3 frontliners plus support beats ten Tier 0s.
- Play the ring. Move early. Getting caught outside while dinos take barrier damage is how armies die.
- Target survivors in the endgame. A tribe without survivors can't tame or steal creatures, though it can still possess its dinos. Picking off survivors cripples an army's growth.
- Steal downed enemy dinos. It's the biggest swing in any fight.
Your First Five Minutes
- Pick a landing zone before the Quetzal leaves. Tribe up in the sky lobby and agree on one area so you land together.
- Look for easy wild creatures first. Small and medium dinos are quick to knock down, so they're the fastest way to start earning points and building an army.
- Tame one mobile creature early. Something you can move quickly with makes it far easier to reach drops and outrun the first ring.
- Check the ring and the match timer (on the HUD since the January 2023 patch) before committing to a long fight.
- Grab the first drop you can safely reach. With no crafting, drops are your only upgrade path for weapons and armor.
- Keep your survivor alive. Only living survivors can tame or reclaim dinos, so an early death limits your whole tribe's growth even though you can keep fighting through possession.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Assuming it's a full survival game. There's no crafting or base-building here.
- Fighting a wild creature at the ring's edge. You'll take barrier damage while it takes normal damage.
- Spreading DP across every dino. Upgrade your core army.
- Leaving downed dinos behind. Enemies can claim them.
- Forgetting the eight-slot limit. Drop low-tier gear for red-drop items.
- Queuing solo at off-peak hours. With this population, organize matches with others.
Advanced Tips
- Use keybinds. Keybind support arrived in the January 2023 patch. Bind commander mode and possession to easy keys.
- The match timer on the HUD (also added in January 2023) helps you plan when to move for the final circle.
- C4 and flame weapons were rebalanced after launch but are still great at breaking tightly grouped enemy dinos.
- Tiny creatures in the final circle: The developers highlighted endgames decided by small creatures under control. Don't underestimate cheap units once the circle is tiny.
- Convert to tokens carefully. A confirmation prompt was added to prevent accidental conversions. Read it before you click.
