Researched September 2026 — the Steam version (September 2019) has not received gameplay patches since launch. Spyro's next game, Spyro: A Realm Beyond, is announced for Spring 2027. Check the linked sources if something differs.
Quick Start
- Three games, one launcher. Spyro the Dragon, Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage! and Spyro: Year of the Dragon are all included. Progress in each is separate.
- Sparx is your health bar. Sparx the dragonfly changes color as you take hits (gold, then blue, then green, then gone). Feed him by flaming or charging small animals (butterflies heal him).
- Charge beats metal, flame beats most everything else. Armored enemies must be charged; enemies bigger than Spyro usually need a charge instead of flame.
- Glide is your best friend. Jump, then jump again at the peak to glide. In Spyro 2 and 3 you can also hover at the end of a glide for a little extra height.
- The Guidebook tracks everything. Pause and open it to see what's left in each level: gems, dragons/orbs/eggs, and skill points.
- Sparx points to gems. Leftover gems nearby? Sparx drifts toward them. In the later games you can buy upgrades that make him even more helpful.
- Choose modern or original controls in the options. Modern puts camera on the right stick and flame on the right trigger.
- Swap soundtracks anytime. You can switch between Stewart Copeland's originals and Stephan Vankov's new arrangements.
Controls and Moves
Move | What it does
Flame | Burns most enemies, opens basket chests and wakes some objects
Charge | Hold to run fast; rams metal-armored and big enemies, breaks some chests
Jump | Standard jump
Glide | Jump again at the height of a jump
Hover | Spyro 2 and 3: brief lift at the end of a glide
Roll | Quick side-to-side roll for dodging projectiles and lining up charges
Look | First-person look mode for scouting
Headbash | Spyro 2 and 3: jump and press the attack input in midair to smash down
Swim, Climb | Spyro 2 abilities bought from Moneybags
Tip: glide from the highest point you can reach — height is distance.
Spyro the Dragon
Totals: 80 dragons, 12 dragon eggs, 12,000 gems. Beat Gnasty Gnorc to finish the story; get 100% to unlock Gnasty's Loot.
Homeworld | Levels | Boss | Flight level
Artisans | Stone Hill, Dark Hollow, Town Square | Toasty | Sunny Flight
Peace Keepers | Dry Canyon, Cliff Town, Ice Cavern | Doctor Shemp | Night Flight
Magic Crafters | Alpine Ridge, High Caves, Wizard Peak | Blowhard | Crystal Flight
Beast Makers | Terrace Village, Misty Bog, Tree Tops | Metalhead | Wild Flight
Dream Weavers | Dark Passage, Lofty Castle, Haunted Towers | Jacques | Icy Flight
Gnasty's World | Gnorc Cove, Twilight Harbor | Gnasty Gnorc | —
Notes:
- Dragons are statues you free by walking into them. They save your progress and give hints.
- Dragon eggs are stolen by blue egg thieves who run away. Chase and flame/charge them; many hide in tricky side areas.
- Keys unlock locked chests in some levels.
- Balloonists in each homeworld fly you between worlds, but some require a set number of gems, dragons or eggs.
- Flight levels hide behind portals. "Hop, Skip, and Jump" is an achievement for finding Sunny Flight's hidden entrance.
- Skill points are new to Spyro 1 in Reignited — they're specific challenges per level. Check the Guidebook.
Boss tips
- Toasty: Easy — chase him down. An achievement asks you to beat him without getting hit.
- Doctor Shemp: Work through his level, then punish him between attacks. There's a strong chest in his level worth unlocking for an achievement.
- Blowhard: Dodge his attacks and close in when you can. There's an achievement for collecting 400 gems in his level.
- Metalhead: A bigger, tougher boss; watch his pattern before committing.
- Jacques: Elusive and fast — use the level's layout to reach him.
- Gnasty Gnorc: Mostly a chase — collect keys and corner him.
Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage!
Totals: 64 orbs, 10,000 gems, 14 talismans. You're in the land of Avalar, stopping Ripto. Moneybags sells you abilities and bridges for gems.
Homeworld | Levels | Boss
Summer Forest | Glimmer, Idol Springs, Colossus, Hurricos, Sunny Beach, Aquaria Towers, Ocean Speedway | Crush (Crush's Dungeon)
Autumn Plains | Skelos Badlands, Crystal Glacier, Breeze Harbor, Zephyr, Metro Speedway, Scorch, Shady Oasis, Magma Cone, Fracture Hills, Icy Speedway | Gulp (Gulp's Overlook)
Winter Tundra | Mystic Marsh, Cloud Temples, Canyon Speedway, Robotica Farms, Metropolis | Ripto (Ripto's Arena)
Post-game: Dragon Shores is the carnival-style post-game area; its biggest rewards are for players going for completion.
Notes:
- Talismans come from finishing a level's main quest; you need them to progress.
- Orbs come from side challenges and hidden spots. Some are on tricky minigames.
- Abilities: Moneybags teaches Swim, Climb and Headbash. Many orbs are unreachable until you have them, so plan to revisit earlier levels.
- Speedways are flight courses; you earn an orb for beating the main run, and more for the bonus challenges.
- Skill points are optional feats (the originals had these too). The Guidebook lists them.
Boss tips
- General rule: all three Spyro 2 bosses revolve around power-ups that appear in the arena. Grab them, fire, and keep moving between attacks.
- Crush: Dodge his club swings and punish after each attack.
- Gulp: Stay mobile; he fires back and gets more aggressive as he takes damage.
- Ripto: A multi-phase finale. Learn each phase's pattern before committing.
Spyro: Year of the Dragon
Totals: 150 dragon eggs, 20,000 gems. The Sorceress has stolen dragon eggs; you chase Bianca and the Rhynocs across the Forgotten Worlds.
Homeworld | Levels | Boss
Sunrise Spring | Sunny Villa, Cloud Spires, Molten Crater, Seashell Shore, Mushroom Speedway, Sheila's Alp, Crawdad Farm | Buzz (Buzz's Dungeon)
Midday Gardens | Icy Peak, Enchanted Towers, Spooky Swamp, Bamboo Terrace, Country Speedway, Sgt. Byrd's Base, Spider Town | Spike (Spike's Arena)
Evening Lake | Frozen Altars, Lost Fleet, Fireworks Factory, Charmed Ridge, Honey Speedway, Bentley's Outpost, Starfish Reef | Scorch (Scorch's Pit)
Midnight Mountain | Crystal Islands, Desert Ruins, Haunted Tomb, Dino Mines, Harbor Speedway, Agent 9's Lab, Bugbot Factory | The Sorceress (Sorceress's Lair)
The last level in each row (Crawdad Farm, Spider Town, Starfish Reef, Bugbot Factory) is that homeworld's Sparx level.
Post-game: the Super Bonus Round in Midnight Mountain is the ultimate completion challenge.
Notes:
- Playable friends: Sheila the kangaroo, Sgt. Byrd the penguin, Bentley the yeti and Agent 9 the monkey each have their own levels and sections in other worlds.
- Sparx levels are top-down shooter bonus stages unlocked in each homeworld; they reward Sparx upgrades.
- Moneybags blocks paths and sells you access to friends — pay him to unlock them.
- Skateboarding, boxing and more minigames give eggs. Some are the hardest eggs in the trilogy.
Boss tips
- Buzz: A Sheila fight — knock him into the lava.
- Spike: Watch his attack patterns and use what the arena gives you between his attacks.
- Scorch: A Sgt. Byrd fight; fly and attack from the air.
- The Sorceress: A multi-part finale. Stay mobile and learn each phase before going aggressive.
100% Tips (All Three Games)
- Use the Guidebook constantly. It shows exactly which dragons, orbs, eggs and skill points remain per level.
- Sparx levels in Spyro 3 reward Sparx abilities that make gem-hunting easier.
- Gem-hunting: gems left in a level show in the Guidebook as a count. Walk the full level edges, water, and high ledges.
- Revisit with new abilities in Spyro 2 (swim, climb, headbash).
- Egg thieves (Spyro 1) flee along set paths; learn their routes and corner them.
- Skill points unlock concept art and are tracked separately. Many are simple ("hit X targets" or "defeat a boss without getting hit").
- Unlockables: 100% rewards include new areas (Gnasty's Loot, Dragon Shores, the Super Bonus Round), plus extras in the Guidebook.
Achievements
There are 105 Steam achievements across the trilogy. Many are level-specific challenges (for example, lighting both bonfires in Dark Hollow, flaming every vulture in Cliff Town, gliding to the secret egg thief area in Town Square, or unlocking the strong chest in Doctor Shemp). The Guidebook's skill points overlap with many achievements, so cleaning up skill points gets most of them.
PC Version Tips
- Controller strongly recommended. The game plays best on a gamepad; keyboard works but feels stiff.
- Modern vs original control scheme: modern maps camera to the right stick and flame to the right trigger.
- Performance: the PC version supports modern resolutions. If you hit stutter, lower shadows and effects before resolution.
- Soundtrack toggle: switch between original and remastered soundtracks in audio options.
- Voice acting: Tom Kenny voices Spyro throughout, including the first game.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Flaming armored enemies. It won't work — charge them.
- Skipping the Guidebook. You'll waste hours hunting for things you already have.
- Spending all your gems early in Spyro 2 and 3. Moneybags' prices can block progress; keep some reserve.
- Ignoring Sparx. Keep him healthy — butterflies are extra hits.
- Rushing speedways. Learn each route; the bonus challenges often need precise flying.
- Getting stuck on a minigame. Leave hard eggs and orbs for later — your skills improve.
Advanced Tips
- Charge-jump for distance. Jumping out of a charge covers more ground, and gliding from it extends your reach.
- Cancel falls with a glide. Missed a jump? Glide again if you still have height.
- Use first-person look to spot gems, eggs and ledges.
- Superflame power-ups (in levels and boss arenas) make short work of tough enemies.
- Speedway routing: hit rings in order and cut corners by rolling and banking.
- Sparx in Year of the Dragon: clear his Sparx levels early — the abilities they unlock make gem hunting far easier.
