A spoiler-light guide to ATLUS's fantasy JRPG: how the calendar, Royal Virtues, Followers, Archetypes, and Press Turn combat fit together, which Archetypes to aim for, and how to avoid the time-management traps that cost players their best endings and bonds.

Researched September 2026 — current as of the PC release (Steam, last patched October 2025 with a Unity security update; no content changes). Check the linked sources if something differs.

Quick Start

  • The calendar is the game. Each story arc has a hard deadline. Miss it and it's a game over. Plan dungeons early in each arc, then spend the remaining days on bonds and virtues.
  • Clear dungeons in as few days as possible. Every day you save goes to Followers and Royal Virtues, which unlock Archetypes and perks.
  • Use field combat to stun, then start a Squad battle. Hitting enemies in real time before a turn-based fight gives you the advantage. Weak enemies can be killed outright in the field.
  • Check Fae Sight. It color-codes enemies by how dangerous they are relative to your level. Don't swing at a red enemy in the field.
  • Exploit weaknesses to save Press Turns. Weakness hits and criticals use only half a Press Turn. Misses and "null" results waste turns.
  • Follower bonds unlock Archetypes. Each Follower is tied to an Archetype lineage, and raising their Bond Rank unlocks the advanced versions.
  • Inherit skills. Once a character has several Archetypes, they can carry skills from one into another. This is how you build strong characters.
  • Use the Retry command if a fight goes wrong. It rewinds to before the battle.
  • The demo carries over. The free demo's save data transfers to the full game.

Core Systems

Time: days, deadlines, and the Gauntlet Runner

  • Days are split into daytime and evening. Most activities use up a time slot.
  • Travel takes days too. The Gauntlet Runner, your mobile base, carries you between towns and dungeons, and some activities can be done on board while you travel.
  • Each arc ends on a fixed date. The game warns you as it gets close, but don't cut it close.

Efficient loop for each arc:

  • Read the new objective and buy gear.
  • Travel.
  • Clear the dungeon in one or two visits.
  • Spend the rest of the time on Followers, virtues, side quests, and farming.

Royal Virtues

There are five virtues: Courage, Wisdom, Tolerance, Eloquence, and Imagination. They rise through activities such as reading, eating, specific jobs, and side quests. They gate:

  • Starting or advancing some Followers' bonds
  • Dialogue options
  • Some activities and perks

Tip: raise any virtue that is gating a Follower first. Otherwise, prioritize activities that also advance something else, such as a bond or a quest reward.

Followers and Bonds

Followers are the people you bond with. Every Follower grants perks as their rank rises, including shop discounts, bonus EXP, faster cooking, and field utility. Each one is also tied to an Archetype lineage.

Follower | Archetype lineage | How they join

Gallica | Mage | Automatically (6/6)

Strohl | Warrior | After defeating Captain Klinger at the Nord Mines

Hulkenberg | Knight | After clearing the Catacombs the first time and returning to the Honeybee Inn

More | Seeker | Sleep at camp after beating Homo Gorleo at the Northern Border Front

Maria | Healer | Automatically (6/10)

Catherina | Brawler | Automatically (6/12)

Brigitta | Merchant | Complete the side quest "A Bullish Embargo"

Alonzo | Faker | Talk to him in Thoroughfare Square, Martira

Heismay | Thief | Automatically (7/4)

Bardon | Commander | Complete "Apprehend the Real Kidnapper"

Neuras | Gunner | Complete "Providing a Spark"

Junah | Masked Dancer | Complete "Save the Mourning Snakes"

Eupha | Summoner | Complete "The Trial of Malnova"

Basilio | Berserker | Talk to him while traveling in the Gauntlet Runner

Dates are in-game dates (month/day). None of these Followers are missable in the sense of being locked out forever, but you can run out of calendar days to max them. Start every bond as soon as it opens.

Archetypes (the job system)

Archetypes are the game's classes. Only characters who have awakened to Archetypes can equip them. You change them at Akademeia, and once More's bond reaches rank 2 (via his More's Magic Igniter ability) you can open the Archetype Tree from the main menu.

  • Each lineage has Basic, then Adept, then Elite tiers, and many have a Royal tier. There are 46 Archetypes in total: 14 Basic, 9 Adept, 16 Elite, and 7 Royal.
  • Advanced tiers unlock through that lineage's Follower Bond Rank (Adept around rank 3, Elite around ranks 6 to 8, Royal at rank 8), plus character level or story progress.
  • MAG is the currency you spend to unlock Archetypes. You earn it from battles.
  • Inheritance: a character with two or more Archetypes can inherit skills from their other Archetypes into the one they have equipped. The number of inherit slots is limited, so pick carefully.
  • Prince is a protagonist-exclusive Royal Archetype that you get late in the story.

Lineage | Advanced forms

Seeker | Magic Seeker, Soul Hacker

Mage | Wizard, Elemental Master, Warlock

Warrior | Swordmaster, Samurai, Royal Warrior

Knight | Magic Knight, Paladin, Dark Knight, Royal Knight

Thief | Assassin, Ninja, Royal Thief

Masked Dancer | Persona Master, Royal Masked Dancer

Summoner | Devil Summoner, Royal Summoner

Berserker | Destroyer, Royal Berserker

Healer | Cleric, Savior

Gunner | Sniper, Dragoon

Brawler | Pugilist, Martial Artist

Faker | Trickster

Merchant | Tycoon

Commander | General, Warlord

Combat: field plus Press Turns

  • Field combat: attack enemies in real time to damage and stun them. Weak enemies die without a battle. Stunned stronger enemies give you an advantaged start when you switch to Squad combat.
  • Squad combat: turn-based and built on Press Turns.
  • Weakness hits and critical hits cost half a Press Turn, which effectively gives you extra actions.
  • Misses, and attacks the enemy nulls or blocks, cost you extra turns.
  • Rows: place party members in the Front or Back row. Back-row members take less damage, and some boss attacks target a specific row.
  • Synthesis: combined attacks between two or more party members using Archetypes from specific pairings. They're powerful but use up more of your turn. Seeker is valued largely for its strong Synthesis options.

Archetype Recommendations

Common community rankings (for example, Game8's tier list) put Seeker, Warrior, and Masked Dancer at the top, with Mage, Gunner, Brawler, Faker, and Commander close behind.

Character | Strong early picks | Why

Protagonist | Seeker, Mage, Warrior | Seeker for Synthesis and wind coverage, Mage for early elemental coverage, Warrior for physical damage

Strohl | Warrior line | Natural damage dealer that advances toward Swordmaster and Samurai

Hulkenberg | Knight line, or Healer | Tank role, or a light-element healer in the right dungeons

Heismay | Thief line | Speed, stealth, and utility

General build rules:

  • Keep at least two elemental types covered across your party, so you can hit most weaknesses.
  • Have one reliable healer. Healer/Cleric works, or inherited healing skills.
  • Carry buff and debuff skills through inheritance. Stacked attack buffs plus enemy defense debuffs matter a lot in boss fights.
  • Merchant has a useful field trick: it earns money when you defeat stunned enemies.

Dungeon and Boss Tips

  • Clear each dungeon in one trip if you can. Stock up on healing and MP-restoring items first. Leaving and coming back costs days.
  • Use Fae Sight before you engage. It tells you whether an enemy is safe to field-kill.
  • Bosses: each arc ends with a major human or "Homo" boss fight (for example Homo Gorleo at the Northern Border Front), building to the confrontation with Louis. Before each one:
  • Check for weaknesses by using a cheap skill of each element.
  • Buff before you go all in.
  • Watch for row-targeting attacks and switch rows if needed.
  • Don't fight at a level deficit. If Fae Sight shows red everywhere, grind a bit (field-killing weak enemies is quick) or change Archetypes to gain coverage.

Missables and Time Traps

  • Deadline game overs: the game has hard deadlines. Save in multiple slots.
  • Bond time: maxing every Follower requires steady attention from the first month. Start bonds immediately and don't let high-rank bonds sit idle for weeks.
  • Side quests with conditions: some Followers (Brigitta, Bardon, Neuras, Junah, Eupha) are tied to side quests. Don't sit on those quests.
  • Point of no return: the final stretch locks you in. The game warns you, and you should finish outstanding bonds and quests before you go past it.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Spending too many days in dungeons. Two long visits can cost a whole bond rank or two.
  • Ignoring Royal Virtues until they block a Follower or a dialogue option.
  • Leaving everyone on Basic Archetypes. Unlock Adept and Elite forms as soon as bonds allow. The jump in power is big.
  • Forgetting inheritance. A Warrior with an inherited heal or buff is far more useful than a pure attacker.
  • Missing into blocked elements. A null or repel can throw away your whole turn. Scan enemies first.
  • Skipping Retry. There's no penalty for rewinding a bad fight.
  • Fighting in the wrong row setup during bosses with row-targeting attacks.

Advanced Tips

  • Press Turn math: chaining weaknesses and crits can give you close to double actions. Build parties that can hit a common weakness with several members.
  • Buff and debuff stacking is the key to late-game and optional bosses. Bring at least one buffer and one debuffer.
  • Synthesis timing: use Synthesis attacks when they'll hit a weakness or wipe a whole wave. Otherwise, single actions are often more turn-efficient.
  • Farm MAG efficiently by field-killing and quickly finishing weak groups instead of full Squad fights.
  • Use travel days on the Gauntlet Runner for activities that are only available on board, so no day is wasted.
  • New Game Plus carries progress forward, so a second run lets you finish the bonds and Archetypes you missed.

FAQ

How long is Metaphor: ReFantazio? Most first playthroughs take several dozen hours. Completionist runs that max every bond and Archetype run much longer.

Is there a game over if I miss a deadline? Yes. Missing a story deadline ends the game, so keep multiple saves.

How do I change Archetypes? At Akademeia. After More's bond reaches rank 2, you can also change them from the main menu.

What's the best Archetype for the protagonist? Seeker is a top pick for its Synthesis options, but Mage and Warrior are great early. The protagonist gets the exclusive Prince Archetype late in the game.

Can I carry over my demo save? Yes. The official store page states that the demo's save data carries over to the full game.

Are there other versions? It's on PC, PS4/PS5, and Xbox Series X/S. In January 2026, a Guidebook Edition bundling a digital strategy guide was released. Wikipedia also lists a Nintendo Switch 2 version scheduled for November 12, 2026.
