A practical guide to For Honor's Art of Battle combat system, heroes, game modes, Dominion strategy, Steel and progression, and ranked play, updated for Year 10 Season 3.

Researched September 2026 — current as of Year 10 Season 3 "Blood Hunt" (launched September 10, 2026, with Ranked Dominion). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Quick Start

  • Do the tutorial and training first. The official Skill Challenge Series (Basic Training, Light Spam, Feinting, Max Punishes, Rotating, Revenge and Ganking, Mix-Ups, Know Your Enemy, The Final Challenge) is the best free learning path Ubisoft offers.
  • Pick one hero and stick with them. 39 heroes is a lot. Learn one well before branching out. Warden, Kensei, and Raider are good first picks.
  • Block before you attack. Most beginners lose by attacking into parries. Watch the enemy's attack indicator and match its direction.
  • Learn to parry heavies. Parrying (a heavy attack in the same direction as the incoming attack, timed late) is the biggest early skill jump.
  • Watch your stamina. Running out leaves you slow and open to guard breaks and throws.
  • Use the environment. Ledges, spikes, and walls give instant kills or big damage. Always know where they are.
  • In Dominion, play the objective. Captures and zone holds win games, not kill counts.
  • Don't fight 1vX in the open. Retreat to a teammate or a ledge-free area and build Revenge.
  • Spend Steel on heroes, not cosmetics, at first. Unlocking the heroes you like matters more than outfits.
  • Ranked Dominion is new. As of Y10S3 you can climb from Bronze to Grand Master in Dominion as well as Duel.

Core Combat: The Art of Battle

Guard and directions

When you lock on to an enemy you enter guard mode. Your guard sits in one of three directions: left, right, or top. You block by matching the direction of the incoming attack. You attack from one of those same directions.

Every attack has an indicator that shows its direction. Learn to read it early:

Attack type | What it means | How to deal with it

Light | Fast, low damage | Block or parry. Some heroes' lights are very fast.

Heavy | Slow, high damage, feintable | Block, parry, or dodge

Unblockable (orange) | Can't be blocked | Parry, dodge, or interrupt

Guard break | Grab | Counter guard break (press guard break as it lands)

Bash | Shoulder charge, kick, etc. | Dodge

Key defensive tools

  • Parry — a heavy attack in the incoming attack's direction, timed just before it lands. Parrying opens the enemy to a guaranteed punish (often a guard break or a light).
  • Counter guard break (CGB) — press guard break as the enemy's guard break lands.
  • Dodge — every hero has dodges, with different timings. Some dodges lead into attacks.
  • Deflect — assassins and some other heroes can deflect with a dodge in the attack's direction for a punish.
  • Superior Block — some moves block and attack at the same time.

Key offensive tools

  • Feints — start a heavy and cancel it. Many heroes can feint into a guard break. Feints punish players who parry early.
  • Mix-ups — force a 50/50: for example, heavy vs. feint-to-guard-break. The Skill Challenge "Mix-Ups" episode is worth watching.
  • Chains — sequences of attacks that flow into each other. Each hero's move list (in the hero menu) shows them.
  • Throws — after a guard break, throw enemies into walls, off ledges, or into spikes.

Stamina

Everything costs stamina: attacks, feints, dodges, and some blocks. When you run out, you move slowly, can't dodge well, and are easy to knock down. Keep some stamina in reserve and punish enemies who run out.

Hyper armor and uninterruptible

Some attacks have hyper armor: they can't be interrupted by light attacks during part of the swing. Trading a light into a hyper-armored heavy loses you damage. Learn which of your opponent's moves have it.

Revenge

When you're outnumbered, blocking, parrying, and taking hits fill your Revenge meter. When full, you can activate Revenge for a short time: activating it knocks down nearby enemies and gives you extra protection so you can survive the gank and fight back. Exact Revenge values have been rebalanced over the years, so check the current patch notes if you want numbers. Use it when you're about to be ganked, not when you're 1v1.

Heroes

As of September 2026 the official site lists 39 heroes across five factions:

Faction | Heroes

Knights | Warden, Conqueror, Peacekeeper, Lawbringer, Centurion, Gladiator, Black Prior, Warmonger, Gryphon

Vikings | Raider, Warlord, Berserker, Valkyrie, Highlander, Shaman, Jormungandr, Varangian Guard

Samurai | Kensei, Orochi, Shugoki, Nobushi, Shinobi, Aramusha, Hitokiri, Kyoshin, Sohei, Arakure

Wu Lin | Tiandi, Nuxia, Jiang Jun, Shaolin, Zhanhu, Juren

Outlanders | Pirate, Medjay, Afeera, Ocelotl, Khatun, Virtuosa

Classes

Heroes are split into four classes:

Class | Strengths | Examples

Vanguard | Balanced, good all-rounders | Warden, Kensei, Raider, Tiandi

Assassin | Fast, evasive, strong 1v1, low health | Peacekeeper, Orochi, Berserker, Nuxia, Shinobi, Shaman, Gladiator, Arakure

Heavy | High health, slow, strong defense | Conqueror, Lawbringer, Shugoki, Warlord, Jiang Jun, Black Prior, Jormungandr

Hybrid | Mix of traits and unusual kits | Valkyrie, Nobushi, Highlander, Shaolin, Centurion

Good heroes for beginners

  • Warden — simple kit, strong shoulder bash mix-up, good in every mode.
  • Kensei — clear, readable offense and good reach.
  • Raider — big throws and ledge kills, great in team modes.
  • Conqueror — forgiving defense and a strong guard. Good for learning to block.
  • Lawbringer — heavy with strong punishes and throws, good for learning to react.

Newest hero: Arakure (July 2026)

Arakure joined on July 23, 2026. She's a Samurai Assassin using tonfas, described as a "Strike Meter and target swap specialist": a scrappy brawler who fights dirty. New heroes launch for purchase first and become available for Steel a little later. Arakure became available for Steel in early August 2026.

Unlocking heroes

  • Heroes are unlocked with Steel, the in-game currency.
  • Hero Fests give a week where a specific hero is unlocked for everyone, with double XP and new executions. That's a free way to try a hero before buying.
  • You earn Steel from matches, daily and weekly orders, and contracts.

Game Modes

Mode | Format | What it's about

Dominion | 4v4 | Capture zones, hold the minion lane, reach breaking point

Breach | 4v4 | Attackers push a battering ram, defenders protect a lord

Brawl | 2v2 | Team elimination

Duel | 1v1 | Best-of-five rounds

Elimination | 4v4 | Elimination rounds with 1v1 openers

Skirmish, Tribute | 4v4 | Point-based and objective variants

Arcade | Solo/co-op PvE | Challenges against bots

Ranked | Duel and, from Y10S3, Dominion | Competitive ladder, Bronze to Grand Master

Events also rotate in. Metal Trials (a PvE wave mode) ran as a throwback event from August 13 to September 3, 2026, awarding Black Armor sets.

Dominion Strategy

Dominion is the flagship mode and now ranked.

How it works

  • Three zones: A, B (the middle minion lane), and C.
  • Holding zones and killing minions earns points. At 1,000 points the enemy team is breaking: they can't respawn (only teammate revives bring them back) until they push their opponents back under 1,000 by retaking zones. Wipe a breaking team to win.
  • Each player also has Renown, earned from kills, captures, and assists. Renown unlocks Feats (tiers 1 to 4) such as healing, traps, bombs, and powerful late-game abilities.

Rules of thumb

  • Don't give up the zones on your side. Start by taking your near point and holding it.
  • Send someone to B. Minions give steady points and Renown.
  • Rotate to help. When a teammate is outnumbered, go help. When you're outnumbered, back off toward a teammate.
  • Avoid ganking into Revenge. Ganking is strong, but give the ganked player's Revenge meter a moment and don't all swing at once.
  • Watch ledges. Many Dominion maps have edges and spikes near zones. Stay away from them in fights.
  • Use feats at the right time. Save bombs and big feats for teamfights and captures.

Ranked Dominion (Y10S3)

Year 10 Season 3 added Dominion to Ranked alongside Duel with a renewed competitive system, ranks from Bronze to Grand Master. Check the in-game Ranked tab for current entry requirements and season length.

Duel and 1v1 Fundamentals

  • Don't attack first. Let your opponent show their habits. React, then punish.
  • Punish correctly. After a parry or blocked unblockable, use your hero's best guaranteed damage (the Skill Challenge "Max Punishes" covers this).
  • Change your patterns. If you always guard break after a parry, opponents will counter it.
  • Mix feints with real attacks. Players who parry early will fall for feints. Players who don't react will eat your heavies.
  • Use the whole stage. Stay away from ledges, and push opponents toward them.

Gear, Steel, and Seasons

Gear

Gear comes in pieces (for example, helm, chest, arms, weapon parts). In most PvP modes gear stats are normalized, so gear is mostly cosmetic. Open scavenger crates and dismantle unwanted gear for salvage.

Steel

  • Earn Steel from playing, daily and weekly orders, and contracts.
  • Spend it on heroes first, then executions and emotes.
  • Champion Status is a premium, time-limited status (bonus rewards and perks) that comes with some bundles and can also be bought.

Year 10 Season 3: Blood Hunt

  • Launched September 10, 2026. The story follows the Keeper of Chains, who hunts in Guljin's service through a dark forest in Ashfeld.
  • New Conqueror hero skin: The Keeper of Chains (paid; includes scavenger crates and 7 days of Champion Status).
  • Y10S3 Battle Pass plus the Y6S3 Legacy Pass, with up to 200 tiers of rewards between them.
  • Ranked Dominion launch.
  • A Warrior's Den livestream for the Season 3 TU1 was announced on September 24, 2026.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Mashing lights. Fast heroes can win this way at low levels, but you'll be parried constantly later.
  • Parrying too early. Wait for the indicator to flash. Early parries get feinted.
  • Running out of stamina. Leave a little in reserve.
  • Fighting near ledges. One guard break and you're gone.
  • Chasing kills in Dominion. Zones and minions win games.
  • Ganking without thinking. Revenge can turn a 3v1 into a triple knockdown.
  • Switching heroes every match. You won't learn matchups.

Advanced Tips

  • Learn your hero's frame data basics. Know which lights are fast, which heavies have hyper armor, and what's guaranteed after a parry.
  • Read the "Know Your Enemy" idea. Knowing the other hero's threats (their unblockables, their mix-ups) is half of winning.
  • Use target swap in team fights. Many heroes can attack someone other than their locked target. Arakure is built around it.
  • Cancel into guard break. Feinting heavies into guard breaks is a core mix-up for most heroes.
  • Save Revenge for ganks. Activating it with multiple enemies around knocks everyone down and gives you time.
  • Watch the minimap. Knowing where enemies are helps you rotate and avoid ganks.
  • Record and review your matches. Most mistakes repeat.
