How to still play Dread Hunger after the official shutdown, plus a full refresher on surviving the Arctic as an explorer and winning as a thrall.

Service status (verified September 2026): Dread Hunger's official servers closed on January 1, 2024, and the game was removed from sale on December 1, 2023. Owners keep it in their Steam library and can still play on community-hosted servers (the developers' shutdown FAQ promised to release the server files so the community could host). The final patch (January 10, 2024) unlocked max rank, prestige and experience for everyone and added tools for hosting and joining servers by IP. There are no further official updates.

Researched September 2026 — current as of the final patch of January 10, 2024 (community servers only). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Quick Start

  • You need a community server or your own host. Official matchmaking is gone. Join a server through Connect to IP, a saved named server, or a friend's lobby with a dedicated server attached.
  • Everything cosmetic and progression-based is unlocked. Since the January 2024 patch every player has max rank, max prestige and max experience, so there's nothing left to grind.
  • Find a community. Most games now run through the official Discord and community groups organising scheduled lobbies. Eight players is the standard lobby size.
  • As an explorer: stay warm, stay fed, stay together. Cold, hunger and isolation kill more explorers than thralls do.
  • As a thrall: blend in first, strike later. Your spells charge over time. Help the crew early so nobody suspects you.
  • The ship is the win condition. Explorers need coal to keep the boiler running and nitroglycerin to clear the ice route ahead. Thralls win by stopping them.
  • Watch the food. Poisoned food and stews are a thrall's favourite trick. Cook it yourself or eat with someone you trust.
  • Night is deadly. It becomes cold immediately as the sun sets. Plan fires and shelter before dark.

How to Play in 2026

Joining a game

  • Open Connect to IP from the main menu. You can save frequently used servers as named servers in the Game settings menu and pick them from a dropdown later.
  • IP addresses are hidden by default in the Connect to IP menu; you can toggle them to show.
  • Hosts can advertise their server region, which helps you find low-ping lobbies.

Hosting

  • When creating a lobby, the host can create a dedicated server at the same time. Custom game settings are passed through automatically.
  • For persistent public servers, use the community-hosting server files the developers committed to releasing at shutdown; the community Discord and Steam discussions are where current download links and setup guides are kept.
  • Match replays: players can try to download the match replay from the game server. If it succeeds, the replay plays when returning to the lobby.

Finding players

  • The official Discord (discord.gg/dreadhunger) and the game's subreddit have historically been where scheduled community lobbies are organised.
  • Regional communities often run nights at set times; joining one is the most reliable way to get a full lobby.

The Basics

Dread Hunger is an 8-player social deduction survival game. Most players are explorers trying to sail a 19th-century ship through the Arctic to the end of the route. A small number are secretly thralls, working for dark powers to make sure the expedition fails.

Explorer win

Get the ship to the final destination. That means keeping the boiler fed with coal, navigating around icebergs, clearing blocked passages with nitroglycerin, and keeping enough of the crew alive.

Thrall win

Stop the ship. Kill the explorers, sabotage the ship, blow up the boiler, or let the cold and a massive blizzard finish them off.

Survival stats

Threat | What to do

Cold | Build fires, stay inside the ship or shelters at night, wear warm clothing. It gets cold as soon as the sun sets.

Hunger | Hunt, cook, and share food. Butchered bodies can be eaten in desperate times.

Wildlife | Wolves and polar bears roam. Travel in groups; polar bears are especially dangerous and tougher than wolves.

Whiteouts | Sudden visibility drops. Stick close to landmarks and allies.

The blizzard | A massive storm looms over the expedition. You can't wait forever; keep the ship moving.

Roles

Each player spawns as one of eight crew roles: Captain, Chaplain, Cook, Doctor, Engineer, Hunter, Marine and Navigator. Each role has its own perk and starting kit, and a thrall can be any role, so a role is never proof of innocence. Read your role's description in the lobby and lean into it: the Cook should run food, the Doctor should keep medical supplies, the Engineer should mind the ship, the Hunter should bring back meat, and so on. A player who ignores their role's job for no reason is worth watching.

How a match flows

Phase | Explorers | Thralls

Opening | Grab supplies, weapons and coal; get the boiler going | Act helpful, learn who is where, start charging spells

First night | Retreat to the ship or build fires; cook and share food | Look for isolated players and unguarded food

Mid-game | Push the ship forward, clear obstacles with nitro, hunt for food | Sabotage, poison and lure animals while suspicion is split

Late game | Protect the ship and each other; race the blizzard | Go loud if needed: fight, blow the boiler, stall the ship

The blizzard puts a clock on everything. Explorers who waste time gathering far from the ship often lose to the cold, not the thralls.

Explorer Guide

Early game priorities

  • Gather coal and supplies for the boiler. The ship's progress depends on it.
  • Set up food. Cook in groups. Don't let one person control all the food.
  • Arm yourself. Melee weapons, firearms and tools are scattered around the map and in crates.
  • Stay in pairs or trios. Lone explorers are easy prey for thralls and wildlife alike.

Reading the thralls

  • Watch who is always alone. Thralls need time out of sight to use spells and plant sabotage.
  • Track who handles food. Poison in stew is classic thrall play. Tea and antidotes cure poison and each stack to 3 per slot (since patch 1.2.0).
  • Notice suspicious damage. A sudden wolf or bear attack when only one person was nearby is worth discussing.
  • Keep an eye on the boiler and powder kegs. Over-pressured boilers blow; powder kegs and traps are common sabotage tools.

Useful items

  • Tea and antidotes: cure poison; carry some at all times.
  • Pickaxe: needed to climb ice walls and useful for resource gathering.
  • Nitroglycerin: clears obstacles on the ship's route; also a dangerous weapon. Handle with care.
  • Saber: a solid melee weapon (durability and damage were increased in 1.2.0).
  • Coal: fuel for the boiler. Blubber is not a fuel source (changed in hotfix 1.12).

Downed allies

When an explorer is downed they can be revived, or finished. If the last explorer is downed and disconnected, the match ends when they're thrown into the water. Always protect downed teammates; a thrall will often try to finish them.

Thrall Guide

Thralls have access to dark magic spells that charge over time. Totems speed up charging; the base tier-one charge time with no totems is 3 minutes (hotfix 1.12).

Known thrall spells

Spell | What it does

Doppelgänger | Take on another player's appearance to sow confusion

Cannibal | Has a strong attack on a long cooldown (the attack cooldown was increased by 60 seconds in hotfix 1.12)

Spirit walk | Leave your body to move unseen as a spirit

Other spells exist and players pick a loadout before the match. Experiment in private lobbies to find combinations you like.

Thrall playbook

  • Blend in. Gather, cook, help the crew. Suspicion builds fast if you disappear early.
  • Poison selectively. Poisoning everyone at once reveals you. Poison food that a suspected rival will eat, or during chaos.
  • Lure animals. Drawing wolves or a polar bear onto a lone explorer is lethal and deniable.
  • Sabotage at the right time. Sabotaging the ship when the crew is out gathering is more effective than during peak activity.
  • Coordinate with your partner. Two thralls working together can control the ship and split the crew.
  • Finish downed players. A downed explorer can be revived; a finished one can't.

Maps

The game shipped with multiple maps. Community lobbies rotate through them.

Map | Notes

The Approach | The classic map; good for new players

The Expanse | Reworked in update 1.2 (October 2022) with new art, a new nitro path, cave systems and landmarks including the Whaling Docks, the Lighthouse and the Chapel

The Summit | Mountainous map with verticality

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Wandering alone as an explorer. It's the fastest way to die and makes you look suspicious.
  • Eating unverified food. If you didn't watch it being cooked, carry an antidote.
  • Ignoring the boiler. A stalled ship means the blizzard catches up.
  • Blowing your cover early as a thrall. A dead-giveaway kill in the first minutes gets you shot.
  • Carrying nitroglycerin carelessly. One stray hit and it's your problem.
  • Assuming the servers are official. They're community-run now. Respect server rules or you'll be kicked.

Advanced Tips

  • Use voice. Proximity chat and discussion are core to finding thralls. The microphone icon animates when you speak.
  • Scout with nitro routes in mind. Knowing where the ship needs to go helps you prioritise which obstacles to clear.
  • As a thrall, build an alibi. Make sure you're seen helping the crew shortly before and after anything goes wrong.
  • Manage durability. Weapon durability stats are shown in the compendium; bring backups for fights.
  • Doppelgänger timing: use it when the crew is split so confused players can't compare notes.
  • Hosts: set custom settings when creating the lobby; they're passed to the dedicated server automatically.
