Covers all five characters (Nero, Dante, Vergil, Lady and Trish), the difficulty ladder, Bloody Palace, boss tips, how to spend Proud Souls and Red Orbs, and a roadmap to every achievement.

Researched September 2026. Current as of Capcom's August 4, 2026 update (verified Windows 11 compatibility and bug fixes). Check the linked sources if something differs.

Quick Start

  • Skills refund at full value. Proud Souls buy skills between missions, and you can un-learn a skill to get all its Proud Souls back. Experiment freely.
  • Learn Nero's Exceed timing. Revving Red Queen fills the Exceed gauge (up to 3 levels). Timing the rev right after a swing lands boosted attacks without charging. This is Nero's core damage tool.
  • The Devil Bringer is your Swiss-army arm. Snatch pulls enemies to you (or you to them), and Buster does context-specific throws, including big damage on bosses.
  • Style rank means more orbs. Varied attacks and not getting hit raise your Stylish Rank (D up to SSS) and increase Red Orb drops.
  • Dante switches styles on the fly. Trickster, Swordmaster, Gunslinger and Royal Guard are all available in combat, and he unlocks Dark Slayer late in his story arc.
  • Buy health and Devil Trigger upgrades. Blue Orbs (and fragments) extend health and Purple Orbs extend the Devil Trigger gauge. They're the best Red Orb purchases.
  • Turn on Turbo Mode if you want the classic DMC3-like pace. It makes the game run about 20% faster, and Bloody Palace has a Turbo achievement.
  • Secret Missions are hidden in the main missions. Look for secret-mission markers in side rooms and odd corners. Clearing them all is an achievement and rewards Blue Orb fragments.

Characters

Character | Weapons and tools | Playstyle | Campaign

Nero | Red Queen (sword with Exceed), Blue Rose (revolver), Devil Bringer | Grab-and-punish. Exceed timing is the skill ceiling. | Main campaign: most missions, including the opening and the finale

Dante | Rebellion, Ebony and Ivory, Coyote-A, plus weapons he takes from bosses (Gilgamesh, Lucifer, Pandora) | Style-switching combo machine | Seven missions in the middle, taking over halfway through the game

Vergil (SE) | Yamato, Beowulf, Force Edge, Summoned Swords | Precise and technical. Rewards clean play. | Plays through the missions with his own moveset ("Clear the game with Vergil")

Lady (SE) | Kalina Ann (rocket launcher), a grappling wire, several guns | Long-range explosive damage | Shares a campaign with Trish ("Clear the game with Lady and Trish")

Trish (SE) | The demonic sword Sparda, which can fight on its own | Aggressive melee with a remote sword attack | Shares a campaign with Lady

Nero essentials

  • Exceed: rev (the Exceed button) to charge Red Queen. A perfectly timed rev during a combo grants Exceed instantly (MAX-Act on the first rev). Practice it on weak enemies.
  • Buster: each boss and many enemies have unique Buster throws. On bosses, Buster when they're stunned for huge damage.
  • Snatch: pull flyers and shielded enemies to you, or zip to large enemies to stay in the air.
  • Devil Trigger: Nero's Devil Trigger unlocks during the story and adds power to Red Queen and Buster.

Dante essentials

  • Trickster: dashes and teleports. Best for survival and learning bosses.
  • Swordmaster: extra devil arm moves. The biggest damage for most players.
  • Gunslinger: ranged pressure and extra gun moves.
  • Royal Guard: block and Release. High risk, but a perfect block negates damage and stores power.
  • Dark Slayer: gained later in Dante's arc. Unlike the other four, it has only one style level, and it grants some Vergil-like teleport moves.
  • Tip: set the style switches to easy-to-reach buttons and practice switching in the middle of combos.

Vergil essentials

  • He uses his classic DMC3 toolkit (Yamato, Beowulf, Force Edge, Summoned Swords) with DMC4 additions.
  • His Concentration mechanic rewards stylish, deliberate attacks and punishes mashing and running around aimlessly. Keep your pace deliberate.
  • He's a good choice after you've finished the main campaign and want a technical character with a very different feel.

Lady and Trish essentials

  • Lady: keep your distance. Kalina Ann and grenades do huge burst damage, and the grappling wire lets you reposition.
  • Trish: she can send the Sparda sword to attack enemies on its own. Keep it active for extra damage.

Difficulty Ladder

Mode | Notes

Human | Easiest. Achievements "Easy Does It" and "The Best of the Rest" (S ranks).

Devil Hunter | Normal. "Done and Done" and "A Cut Above" (S ranks).

Son of Sparda | Tougher enemy placement and behavior. "Hardly A Simple Task" and "A Stunning Feat".

Dante Must Die | Enemies Devil Trigger. Very aggressive. "All Bow Before You" and "Never Say Die".

Legendary Dark Knight (SE) | Huge crowds of enemies at once. "What Legends Are Made Of" and "I Am Legendary".

Heaven or Hell | You and enemies die in one hit. "Step into the Light".

Hell and Hell | You die in one hit, enemies have normal health. "Tonight, We Dine in Hell".

Harder modes unlock by clearing the previous ones. The easiest order for achievements: Devil Hunter, then Son of Sparda, then Dante Must Die, with Legendary Dark Knight and the one-hit modes last.

Bosses (and the SSS-rank achievements)

Every boss below has an achievement for an SSS ranking on Son of Sparda or higher, so they're worth practicing.

Boss | Tips | Achievement

Berial | A fire demon. Break its fire, then punish its legs and face when it goes down. Buster it when stunned. | Flame Out

Bael / Dagon | Frog-like demons that hide and lure you in. Hit the body, not the lures, and use Snatch to close gaps. | Leap Frog

Echidna | Serpent and plant hybrid. Dodge the charge and punish the opening. Buster during stuns. | Bad Seed

Angelo Credo | Shield and spear knight. Break the guard, then combo. Watch for spear throws. | One Winged Devil

Angelo Agnus | Summons flying enemies. Clear adds fast, then punish Agnus himself. | For Science!

Dante (fought as Nero) | A duel. Don't overcommit. Punish after his combos and Buster when he's vulnerable. | Down A Notch

The Savior | A giant construct. Destroy the weak points to expose the core. | False Prophet

Sanctus (the Order's leader) is the final boss and pilots The Savior during the finale. There's no dedicated boss achievement for him, but his fight counts toward your mission grade on ranked runs. Keep your distance from his projectile patterns, use Snatch to close in when he's exposed, and Buster him at every opening.

SSS ranks: your mission grade (D to SSS) depends on time, style points, orbs collected, and item use. Don't use items, keep your style rank high, and move fast.

Bloody Palace

A survival tower of stages with a timer. Each character has a "clear all Bloody Palace stages" achievement ("Bring It On!" Nero, "I Live For This" Dante, "Might Makes Right" Vergil, "Bazooka Babe" Lady, "Filled With Light" Trish, plus "House Of Pain" for all characters).

Other Bloody Palace achievements:

  • Ruthless Efficiency: clear within 2 hours.
  • King of the Palace: clear all stages with an S ranking.
  • Furiously Fast: clear in Turbo Mode.
  • Untouchable: defeat Dante in the Bloody Palace without taking damage.

Tips:

  • Time counts down, and killing enemies adds time. Play aggressively.
  • Max out your character's health and Devil Trigger upgrades before a full clear.
  • Use Devil Trigger for its healing on boss floors.

Spending Orbs and Proud Souls

Currency | Earned from | Spend on

Red Orbs | Enemies, breakables, hidden orb caches | Blue Orbs, Purple Orbs, Vital Stars, Devil Stars, Holy Water

Proud Souls | Mission results and style | Skills. Refundable at full value.

Blue Orb fragments | Secret Missions and hidden spots | Four fragments make one Blue Orb

Priorities:

  • Nero: Exceed and Buster upgrades, air mobility (Air Hike-type skills), then Devil Trigger skills.
  • Dante: the style you use most, levelled first. Trickster for safety, Swordmaster for damage.
  • Everyone: health (Blue Orbs) and DT (Purple Orbs) from the shop. Prices go up after each purchase, so buy steadily.

Achievement Roadmap

  • Clear the story on Devil Hunter as Nero/Dante. Pick up secret missions as you find them.
  • Clear Vergil's run ("Devil In A Blue Coat") and the Lady/Trish run ("Deadly Pair").
  • Farm Proud Souls for Skill Collector - Nero and Skill Collector - Dante.
  • Clear Son of Sparda and Dante Must Die. Do the boss SSS achievements on SoS.
  • Clear all Secret Missions ("Nothing Left Unsaid").
  • Legendary Dark Knight, Heaven or Hell, Hell and Hell.
  • Bloody Palace clears for every character, plus the 2-hour and Turbo runs.
  • Style achievements (Smokin' up to Smokin' Sick Style!!!) and kill counts (up to 10,000) come naturally.
  • A Throne of Glory: clear all game modes.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Mashing. Mashing kills your style rank and, for Vergil, his Concentration. Vary your attacks.
  • Hoarding Proud Souls. Refunds are free. Try skills and swap them.
  • Ignoring Royal Guard and Trickster. Defense and evasion are what carry you on higher difficulties.
  • Using items on ranked runs. Items tank your mission grade.
  • Skipping Secret Missions. They give Blue Orb fragments, which mean more health for the rest of the game.
  • Playing hard modes without health upgrades. Go back and farm orbs first.

Advanced Tips

  • Exceed cancel practice: in the Secret Missions or Bloody Palace, practice MAX-Act on every combo string until it's second nature.
  • Dante jump cancelling: jump off an enemy to reset aerial moves and stay in the air, the backbone of high-level Dante play.
  • Use Buster on bosses at every stun. It's often the fastest damage you'll get.
  • Turbo Mode for Bloody Palace. Faster animations mean faster clears once your timing is good.
  • Lady's positioning: stay at mid range with an escape route. The wire lets you disengage.
  • PC performance: the August 2026 update verified Windows 11 compatibility. If you had problems with older builds, reinstall and test again before trying fixes.
