A guide to the original 2008 Dead Space on PC: how dismemberment combat really works, which weapons and upgrades to invest in, a chapter outline with boss tips, New Game Plus, and fixes for the PC port's known problems.

Researched September 2026 — current as of the final PC release (Steam app 17470; no gameplay patches in years). The 2023 remake by Motive is a separate game. Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Quick Start

  • Never aim for the head. Necromorphs keep coming after a headshot. Cut off limbs instead (legs to slow them, arms to stop their attacks). This is the most important rule in the game.
  • The Plasma Cutter is good all game. Rotate it (alt-fire) to make horizontal or vertical cuts that line up with limbs. Plenty of players finish with it as their main gun.
  • Stomp everything. Stomping dead enemies and crates drops ammo, health, and credits. It also makes sure "dead" enemies are really dead.
  • Stasis before trouble. Stasis slows an enemy to a crawl. Use it on fast attackers, on Brutes, and to jam fast-moving doors and machinery.
  • Kinesis is a weapon. Pick up and throw objects, especially explosive canisters and the sharp limbs Slashers leave behind.
  • Your health is on your back. Isaac's RIG spine shows health, and the stasis bar sits on his shoulder blade. No HUD, so check it often.
  • Save at every save station. Dying drops you back at a checkpoint, but when you quit, only save stations keep your progress.
  • Spend Power Nodes on one or two weapons, not six. Fully upgrading the Plasma Cutter and one backup beats spreading nodes thin.
  • The game doesn't pause. Opening the inventory or the map (the locator line) happens in real time, so find somewhere safe first.

Core Systems

Health, Stasis, Air

System | How It Works | Tip

Health | Shown on Isaac's back. Refill with Small/Medium/Large Med Packs. | Upgrade the RIG's health nodes early. It's permanent survivability.

Stasis | Energy meter. Refill at wall-mounted stasis stations or with Stasis Packs. | Stations refill for free. Use them before you spend packs.

Air | Only drains in vacuum areas. Refill with Oxygen Tanks or air stations. | Upgrading air capacity makes vacuum sections much calmer.

Stores, Credits, Benches

  • Stores sell ammo, med packs, armor suits, and weapons (once you've found the schematic). You can also store spare items in the safe, and sell loot for credits.
  • Credits come from stomping crates, enemy drops, and selling items like semiconductors and other valuables.
  • Power Nodes upgrade things at workbenches, and they're rare. You find them in the world, and stores also sell them.
  • Node doors are locked rooms that cost one Power Node to open. They hold supplies, but spending a node on them usually isn't as good as using it on an upgrade. Early on, skip them unless you're swimming in nodes.

Zero-G and Vacuum

In zero gravity, aim at a surface and jump to fly there. Enemies can follow you onto walls and ceilings. In vacuum, sound is muffled and your air meter drops. Plan your route before you enter.

Weapons

Every weapon has an alternate fire mode. They're all built on "tools" found on a mining ship.

Weapon | Primary | Alt-Fire | Verdict

Plasma Cutter | Three-bolt line cut | Rotate the cut 90° | Best all-round weapon. Upgrade first.

Pulse Rifle | Automatic fire | 360° spray of fire around Isaac (the grenade alt-fire is from Dead Space 2) | Weak at dismemberment. Good for swarms and pests.

Ripper | Spinning saw held in front | Launch the blade | Amazing up close. Chews through limbs.

Line Gun | Wide horizontal line | Timed mine | Takes several legs off at once. Great for crowds.

Flamethrower | Fire stream | Fire canister | Situational. Doesn't work in vacuum.

Force Gun | Close-range blast | Gravity-well orb | Crowd control and knockback

Contact Beam | Charged beam | Ground shockwave | Huge damage. Good on bosses.

Upgrade path: Most runs go Plasma Cutter first (damage, then capacity, then reload), then a crowd tool like the Line Gun or Ripper, then RIG health and air. Stasis upgrades (duration, capacity) come after that. Weapon ammo is dropped based on the guns you carry, so carrying fewer weapons means more ammo for the ones you actually use.

Suits, Inventory and Upgrades

  • RIG suits come in numbered levels. You unlock each by finding its schematic, then buy it at a store. Every level adds armor and extra inventory slots, and switching is instant. Buying the next suit as soon as you can afford it is one of the best uses of credits.
  • Inventory space is the real limit early on. Sell valuables immediately, bank spare weapons and ammo in the store's safe, and don't pick up ammo for guns you've stopped using.
  • Workbench priorities beyond weapons: RIG health nodes first, then air (for vacuum chapters), then stasis duration and capacity.
  • Schematics are picked up in the world, often in side rooms and node-locked areas. Exploring each chapter fully before moving on is how you unlock the wider store catalog.

Stasis and Kinesis Tricks

  • Stasis jams fast-moving doors, fans and machinery so you can pass. Many environmental puzzles are just "stasis the moving part, then walk through".
  • Stasis refills for free at wall stations, so in puzzle rooms near a station you can spend it freely.
  • Kinesis pulls items and ammo from a distance. Use it to grab pickups across gaps or from behind hazards without walking into them.
  • Kinesis-thrown objects do real damage. Heavy objects and Slasher blades both work, and they cost no ammo.

Enemies (Necromorphs)

Enemy | What It Does | How to Kill It

Slasher | The basic bladed attacker | Cut both arm blades off, or legs to slow it

Leaper | Tail-driven lunger | Shoot the tail, then the arms

Lurker | Infant form with back tentacles | Shoot the three tentacles when they open

Pregnant | Swollen belly full of Swarmers | Don't shoot the belly. Take the limbs.

Swarmer | Tiny swarms | Pulse Rifle, Flamethrower, or stomp

Exploder | Carries an explosive sac | Shoot the sac, or pick it up with Kinesis and throw it

Infector | Turns corpses into Necromorphs | Kill it first. Stomp corpses so they can't be converted.

Brute | Armored tank | Stasis, get behind it, and shoot the soft spots on its limbs

Guardian | Fused into walls, spits pods | Cut the tentacles holding it, then the pods

Wheezer | Releases toxic gas | Kill it quickly to keep your air in toxic areas

Twitcher | Super-fast Slasher variant | Stasis first, always

Divider | Splits into smaller parts | Cut the head and limbs, then stomp the pieces

Drag Tentacle | Pulls Isaac away | Shoot the yellow sac on the tentacle

The Hunter | Regenerating stalker | Can't be killed normally. Dismember it and run. See boss tips.

Chapter Outline

The story has twelve chapters aboard the USG Ishimura and on the planet below. Engineer Isaac Clarke arrives with Kendra Daniels and security chief Zach Hammond. He's looking for his girlfriend Nicole Brennan, the ship's senior medical officer, and runs into the Marker, the mad scientist Dr. Challus Mercer, and Dr. Terrence Kyne along the way.

# | Chapter | Key Moments and Tips

1 | New Arrivals | Tutorial. Learn the Plasma Cutter's rotating fire and stomping.

2 | Intensive Care | Medical Deck. First Lurkers and zero-g sections.

3 | Course Correction | Engineering. Getting the ship's engines and fuel back online.

4 | Obliteration Imminent | Getting the anti-asteroid (ADS) cannons back online. Turret sequence.

5 | Lethal Devotion | Mercer releases the Hunter. Freezing it in the cryo room is the goal.

6 | Environmental Hazard | Hydroponics and toxic air. Leviathan boss.

7 | Into the Void | More vacuum and zero-g objectives. Air upgrades pay off here.

8 | Search and Rescue | Big multi-enemy fights. Stock up at the store before this.

9 | Dead on Arrival | The Marker plot starts coming together

10 | End of Days | The Hunter comes back for a final showdown

11 | Alternate Solutions | Transporting the Marker. The late-game difficulty spike.

12 | Dead Space | The planet surface and the final boss, the Hive Mind

Boss and Set-Piece Tips

  • The Hunter: It regenerates any lost limbs. Cut off its legs, then run. Use stasis generously. When the story gives you a way to freeze or destroy it, lure it into position, stasis it, and trigger the trap.
  • Leviathan (Hydroponics): Shoot the tentacles when they swing at you. When its mouth opens, fire at the yellow glowing sac. Use Kinesis to throw the explosive projectiles it spits back into its mouth. The Contact Beam or a fully upgraded Plasma Cutter makes it fast.
  • ADS cannon turret section: Aim ahead of the asteroids and focus on the big ones first. The turret overheats if you hold fire.
  • The Hive Mind: Shoot the yellow sacs on its tentacles when they rise. When it grabs Isaac, aim at the exposed spots on its chest. Bring stasis packs and plenty of ammo for your best gun.

Difficulty and New Game Plus

  • Difficulties: Easy, Medium, Hard, plus Impossible, which unlocks after you finish the game once.
  • New Game Plus carries over your weapons, upgrades, inventory, and credits. It adds bonus credits and power nodes, and unlocks an extra suit. It's the easy way to max everything.
  • Plasma Cutter-only run: On console, "One Gun" was an achievement for finishing with only the Plasma Cutter. The Steam version doesn't list Steam achievements, but the challenge is still fun and surprisingly comfortable if every node goes into the cutter.

Making It Run on a Modern PC

  • Mouse lag: The in-game V-Sync causes severe mouse input lag. Turn V-Sync off in-game and force it through your GPU driver (or use a frame limiter) instead. It's the most common fix for the PC version.
  • High frame rates: Uncapped frame rates can cause physics and animation glitches. Cap to a sensible value (60 is safe).
  • Controller: Xbox-style controllers work fine.
  • EA account: The Steam page says you need an internet connection, online authentication, and EA's EULA to play. If it won't launch, sign in through the EA app first.
  • Aspect ratio: Supports widescreen, but ultrawide needs community fixes.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Headshots. Every new player does it. Aim for limbs.
  • Selling your last med pack for credits. Always keep at least one medium and one large pack.
  • Carrying every weapon. Ammo drops get spread across guns you don't use.
  • Ignoring stomp. You leave behind ammo and credits, and "dead" Necromorphs get up again.
  • Wasting stasis on single Slashers. Save it for Brutes, Twitchers, groups, and the Hunter.
  • Opening the map mid-fight. It doesn't pause the game.

Advanced Tips

  • Line up cuts. A vertical Plasma Cutter shot can take off both legs of a walking Slasher. A horizontal shot can take off both arms of one that's raising them.
  • Kinesis ammo: Slasher arm blades make great free projectiles. On Impossible, it saves a lot of ammo.
  • Explosive canisters: Throw them with Kinesis or shoot them. Grouped enemies go down together.
  • Corners and doorways: Fight near doors. Necromorphs come from vents, so a dead end you've already checked is safer.
  • Economy: Sell semiconductors and other valuables right away. Buy the RIG suit upgrades (more armor and inventory) when you find their schematics.

FAQ

Is Dead Space (2008) still on Steam? Yes. The original is still sold as app 17470. The 2023 remake is a separate product.

Should I play the original or the remake? The remake reworks the story and level connections and adds modern visuals. The original is cheaper, shorter, and a classic. Both are worth playing.

How do I fix the mouse lag? Turn off V-Sync in-game and handle frame pacing in your GPU driver.

What is the best weapon? The Plasma Cutter, fully upgraded. For a second weapon, the Line Gun or the Ripper.

How do I unlock Impossible difficulty? Finish the game once.

Does the Steam version have achievements? The Steam store page doesn't list Steam Achievements (it does list Trading Cards). Achievement-style challenges like the Plasma Cutter-only run still work as self-imposed goals.

Does NG+ carry over my suit and nodes? Yes. Weapons, upgrades, inventory and credits carry over, and you get bonus credits and power nodes on top, which makes maxing a weapon or two easy.

How long is it? Around 10–15 hours depending on how thoroughly you explore.
